Second in a series of social media tutorials for executives and the generally curious.

My main goal for this post is to somewhat de-mystify social media. It's such an opaque term. But to my way of thinking, social media just means any web based site or tool that allows users to contribute. So here are some basic things on the "been there, done that" check list.

Amazon Reviews. Amazon really pioneered the idea of letting readers tell other people their thoughts about a book or CD in the context of an e-commerce experience. However, until you've written one yourself, they simply aren't as real as they could be. And here is a really good reason to write a book review. If you'd like to get a bit of a public, professional toehold in a subject area that interests, you, there is no faster route than to create two or three Amazon book reviews in that area. The reason? Google ranks Amazon reviews very highly in their search results because they are original content by real people. So, here's what you do:

Pick one, two or more books that represent your interests well (professional or personal)

Make sure you are absolutely fine with being very publicly associated with those books

Write an Amazon review for each book (or other Amazon media product)

Consider using your real name, rather than create a screen name. Real name reviews are more highly ranked on Amazon and using your real name is the only way to get a true online association with the subject area.

For someone looking to establish a credible, professional online presence, an Amazon review can be one of the quickest and best ways to get started. This is particularly key advice for young grads and people returning to the work force, or people looking to make a job or career change. The first thing a hiring manager will do is Google your name, and you can really stand out with a thoughtful review about a professional subject. (Be careful though...I once wrote an Amazon review in which I complained about the difficult language in a South African novel. Later, I realized that wasn't a great advertisement for my literacy skills when I was moving back from Ireland and networking. But even today, when I have five pages of actual Google content about me, a couple of my Amazon reviews are still on the second page of Google results.)

Wikipedia. It feels like everyone knows about Wikipedia, but maybe not everyone knows that it can be the best place to start researching most any topic or organization. For instance, when I was doing business development in my last startup and needed to get up to speed efficiently on a lot of new companies, I always started with Wikpedia. After this first step, I moved to scouring the target company site and a Google search, and finally a Linked In search. But Wikipedia got me set on the right course with the basic facts, and often some obscure or historical ones. They miss whole topics and organizations, but there is nothing to stop you (or anyone else) from getting the ball rolling.

Wikipedia (combination of "wiki" and "encyclopedia") is created and vetted by real people. Anyone can contribute, but truly bad content has a hard time surviving the vigilant volunteer editors. A study which had scholars in a wide variety of areas compare Wikipedia to the Encyclopedia Britannica found the Wikipedia content to be equally valid. Here's what you can do to get your feet wet:

Research any topic that interests you

If you find one which is incomplete (like maybe a limited history of a company you once worked for), create a Wikipedia account (easy) and add your own edits

Read this earlier blog post in which I reported some interesting things said by Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia at the Connecticut Forum

Craigslist. Free online classifieds. Ugly as hell, and really basic. But that is the beauty of the site. It's totally democratic in its listings and everyone is subjected to the same yucky Courier typewriter type font listings. I'm a very light user but have found it invaluable for dumping a like-new drum kit, looking for a housekeeper, and buying a LuvSac that was taking up half the living space in the tiny North Shore apartment of a nice young man.

Here's how to take a fun little tour:

Find your city (in tiny type) on the Craigslist home page

Search for anything that might remotely interest you. I just looked for a "boat" because there is two inches of new rain falling as I write from a cabin in Maine. Yes, the listings are really as basic as they look. Just listed in chronological order, so you only see the latest postings. You can narrow your search in a category, so I found plenty of listings for "Whaler" but nothing for "ark."

Try putting up a listing for the weirdest useless thing in your house.

If you ever really try to get rid of a lot of stuff at once, be wise and only put the listings up if you are really ready for customers. My husband helped close an office and learned to not list the old desks, file cabinets etc. until 7AM of the day they were ready to sell them. There are plenty of Craigslist nuts who will pounce on you the minute you put up a listing. In the case of my husband's office, where they listed the office address alongside the items for sale, the company employees arrived at work the first day they used Craigslist and found a huge queue of people waiting in the wee early morning hours. The waiting line of folks seemed to be a combination of both strange and community-minded---bargain hunters with a vengeance--- but also many quite happy to hang around and help virtual strangers carry out their heavy loot.

Just for fun, be sure to check out "Best of Craigslist" on the left side of the home page. These are the listings nominated as funniest or strangest by readers...they never fail to deliver a belly laugh. Today I chuckled at "female companion needed 4 anything".

Finally, I reported on a talk given by Craigslist's odd but strangely endearing founder Craig Newmark.

Last, here is one update to Part One, on social networks. Don't assume you will catch all of your friend's status updates in the Facebook "Friends" tab. If you have loads of friends (but if you do, why would you be listening to me on this topic?), or a few friends with very frequent updates, Facebook might edit out some of those updates. To be sure of catching every update on your more prolific friends, you have to periodically check their "mini feed" on their profile page.

No podemos hacerlo solo.

Well, I made it. After driving back and forth numerous times to the O'Reilly campus in Sebastopol I am now back in Marin and reflecting on what an incredible time I had at FooCamp. Here is the Wikipedia definition of FooCamp which is fitting as I found myself at one point talking to Wikipedia's founder Jimmy Wales over chicken and black beans. Michael Arrington over at TechCrunch, who was also in attendance, has posted his review of FooCamp here. One of the best parts about the event is that only your name appears on your little tag with no mention of affiliations other than your favorite Star Wars character (which I didn't quite get). For the semi-technorati illiterate like myself it makes for good fun as you get to just walk up to people and say, "Hi, what do you do?" I met a whole slew of people who I knew nothing about but after getting home and Googling their name I would sit back and say, "No s@#$!"

It was an impressive collection of PhD's from MIT, astronauts, investors, journalists and dozens of tech icons. The brain power was overwhelming and I had a hard time geting my head around some of the discussions. (After dinner one night some folks got together and synthesized bacteria to smell like bananas.) At one point it occurred to me that if 1% of the folks in attendance focused their energy on some of the problems facing the aid industry we would be in a much better place.

I took part in a disaster tech event run by Jesse Robbins which had a good size turn out. Some folks presented a very cool app having to do with geo-location and information in emergencies. The development was for Google's Android and not the iPhone 3G so I was a bit off in my previous post where I surmised that the weekend would be about the iPhone 3G. (As a matter of fact almost no one spoke about the new iPhone 3G.) We told some good stories, brainstormed possibilities but mostly just spent our time trying to explain to the rest of the room just how difficult it is to work in an emergency setting. As always, the biggest obstacle to progress is the total lack of understanding, on the part of both the tech industry and the relief industry, as to how things get done in our worlds.

I am hopeful that by attending such events (I am pretty sure I was the only aid worker in attendance) I can not only come away with new ideas that can make our job easier but also educate and energize the tech community to rally around our efforts and come up with some solutions that could greatly improve the way we do things. Hopefully, FooCamp will serve as a catalyst for future events that will draw the both the humanitarian aid community and the tech industry closer together.

I had a great time and thanks to Tim O'Reilly for throwing the event.

That's why some folks chase them.

Steve Paxhia of Gilmore Group, posted these thoughts after hearing Jimmy Wales speak at the O’Reilly Tools of Change conference: "Wikipedia represents the “perfect storm” for a collaborative work or “peering”. According to Wikinomics by Tapscott and Williams, there are three factors necessary to make peering effective: 1) the object of production is information or culture which keeps the cost of participation low for contributors; 2) Tasks can be chunked out into bite-sized pieces that individuals can contribute in small increments and independent of other producers. This makes their overall investment of time and energy minimal in relation to the benefits they receive in return; 3) The costs of integrating those pieces into a finished end product, including the leadership and quality control mechanisms must be low.”

So, collaboration will likely occur where people:

- want (particular/useful) information; that they can

- assemble incrementally and independently; and can from it

- produce a compendium of reasonable quality at little if any cost.

Sound like the perfect enterprise - good/fast/cheap?.. Also sounds like knowledge-management. The gentle breeze of information available from diversely remote areas is now being drawn into the 'whirlwind' of global users via the neural network of the internet, and its 'cloud computing' repositories. That takes care of the 'tropical storm' of content availability. What can take that tracking data content and synthesize it into a predictable storm-path projection - so we can prepare -and at least avoid danger.

How can that content be transferred into an effective tool for social network collaboration - on purpose - and ending with beneficial results?

What type process easily collects information, automatically aggregates it, objectively improves it, and equitably presents only the best of it for consumption, or for re-evaluation and any needed upgrade? It also sounds like problem-solving, 24/7, complete with planning, navigation, mid-course correction. Where is our gyroscope to keep us oriented - our compass to keep us on course?

We may have the makings for a 'perfect storm' but some energy must come together and an eye must form. When it does that will become the center of excitement where that information can become well organized by purposeful collaboration and integrated into the 'gale force' power needed for solving real problems. Dare to become a chaser of that 'storm'?

What will it take for 'us' to get our 'clouds' together...

to grow from the 'tropical' strength of 'content'

to the hurricane force of CHANGE ?

While several options may exist, one comes quickly to mind...

are you ready to ASK4™ it?

Are you ready to 'peer in'...? You could get caught in

the perfect storm of 'cooperation'.

You could help make possible 'one internet, under control, of liberty and justice, BY all'...for those who dare to participate in - and benefit from - their U-Netted Nations™.

What’s about YOU? - care to comment?

- dare to COOPERATE?

NOTE: While this website is my personal initiative, the ASK4™ approach is a participant-managed collaboration platform and the U-Netted Nations™ is the result of our 'Collaboration On Purpose'. My voice becomes one in a million - immediately.

No podemos hacerlo solo.

SEE UPDATE BELOW - THESE RECORDINGS MAY WELL BE FRAUDULENT

A new YouTuber, scileak0177, who claims to be a high-ranking Scientologist who has seen the light and is now helping to expose Scientology from the inside has released a set of videos which he claims are leaks from the church. The most notable set of claims pertain to Wikipedia. Firstly, it is claimed that Wikipedia is funding Anonymous. Secondly, it is claimed that the cult has declared the leader, Jimmy Wales, and other high-rankers of Wikipedia SP (Suppressive Person). Thirdly, a recommendation is made to publicly smear Wales. Lastly, a man who is supposedly a high-ranking Scientologist advises that the cult litigate Wikipedia and drag the case on in order to bankrupt them - which his something that the cult has previous experience with, having engaged in exactly this with the Cult Awareness Network. Essentially, the message is to threaten and if necessary commence a war on Wikipedia.

UPDATE:

Scilinks0177's most recent video suggests that he may well be a fraud - which was a strong possibility from the get-go. In this video, he claims that Xenu would never have approved of what the leaders of Scientology are doing (e.g., orchestrating and perpetuating lies, attempting to stomp out freethinking, etc.). Scientologists do not worship Xenu. The Xenu story describes Xenu as the leader of an overpopulated intergalactic confederation; Xenu was said to have attempted to relieve the overpopulation by deporting billions of alien souls to Earth, blowing them up, and then brainwashing them. These brainwashed alien souls would later latch onto humans as "body thetans" and be the source of all of our prpblems and discontents. Xenu was never a described as a source of inspiration or someone worthy of worship. He was described as a source of problems, problems worthy of counteracting.

It's not every day that a publication in an academic journal devoted to genomics receives wide attention all over the Web. I'm referring of course to:

Mons, B. et al. 2008
Calling on a million minds for community annotation in WikiProteins
Genome Biology 9:R89.

Nor is it every day that one of the "et al." is a WWW pioneer; in this case a certain J. Wales. I'm looking forward to seeing S. Brin and L. Page in PubMed any day now.

This is important. The early adopters and web technology enthusiasts can evangelise for years about concepts such as community annotation of scientific data using wikis. However, the sad fact is that the majority of researchers in academia will pay no attention whatsoever until the work appears in what they consider a reputable source: i.e. an academic journal. This despite the fact that the readership of most such journals is miniscule compared to the web audience. Go figure.

Wiki Professional is here and of course, Deepak is all over it already.

Update: Euan takes a look at the implementation and is less than impressed.

Folkene bak Wikia Search innrømmer at kvaliteten på den nåværende siden er lav; -Search Wikia is still very much under development, and we are aware that the quality of the search results is low.

Diskusjon: Hvorfor skal man bruke Wiki Search fremfor Google?

Repito: a Wikipedia, quem diria, será impressa.
O projeto que popularizou a plataforma wiki ganhar

Repito: a Wikipedia, quem diria, será impressa.

It's over 500 years since Johannes Gutenberg invented his famous printing press - something which had actually been around centuries earlier in China and Korea. Nowadays the internet is fast replacing old-fashioned books as the way to find things out.

But now Wikipedia is doing some time travel, going back a few centuries to produce a book version of the revolutionary user-edited encyclopedia. It will only be available in German for now, but if it takes off, it may well spread around the world.

But before you book-lovers get too excited, is it actually ever going to be a hit? My prediction is a definite no. Aside from the price (around $30, compared to free access for the online version), I don't think the publishers have realized that a paper copy of Wikipedia wouldn't actually be much use. The whole idea of Wikipedia is that it is constantly updated, and that's what sets it apart from the traditional encyclopedias like Britannica.

Rather than going back to the past, I think it's better to look forward to the future. It's been interesting watching Wikipedia's gigantic surge in popularity in recent years - for many people it is the only encyclopedia they ever use. In fact, it's the 7th most visited site on the whole internet. It'll be very interesting watching how Wikipedia evolves over the next few years.

Perhaps in 100 years time, our descendants will be wondering how we could ever use such archaic technology compared to what they will have. Ah, if only Wikipedia could invent a time machine that could go forward a few centuries, rather than back.

"Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge." J. Wales, Founder of Wikipedia

Wikipedia is a free, multilingual, open content encyclopedia project operated by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. Its name is a portmanteau of the words wiki (a technology for creating collaborative websites) and encyclopedia. Launched in January 2001 by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger, it is the largest, fastest-growing and most popular general reference work currently available on the Internet.

Wikipedia's articles have been written collaboratively by volunteers around the world, and nearly all of its articles can be edited by anyone with access to the Internet. Having steadily risen in popularity since its inception, it currently ranks among the top ten most-visited websites worldwide.

In addition to being an encyclopedic reference, Wikipedia has received major media attention as an online source of breaking news as it is constantly updated. When Time Magazine recognized "You" as its Person of the Year 2006, praising the accelerating success of on-line collaboration and interaction by millions of users around the world, Wikipedia was the first particular "Web 2.0" service mentioned, followed by YouTube and MySpace.

Today I signed a virtual document called The Open Education Declaration, (www.capetowndeclaration.or

Today I signed a virtual document called The Open Education Declaration, (www.capetowndeclaration.org) which was initiated at a meeting in Cape Town in September 2007. Particicipants included Jimbo Wales of Wikipedia and Rich Baraniuk of Connexions, two individuals who have played a major role in the open source movement. Jimmy started with his popularly generated encyclopedia. Rich developed a platform for authors, teachers and students to create, remix and share courses and textbooks.( http://cnx.org/)

Here's what they say:

Imagine textbooks adapted to many learning styles and translated into myriad languages. (Today, language barriers prevent many immigrant parents from helping their children with their homework because the texts are only in English.) Imagine textbooks that are continually updated and corrected by a legion of contributors. (Today, Pluto remains in the list of planets in the nation's science textbooks, and who knows how long it will take for it to be removed.)

This world was just a dream a decade ago.

But the puzzle pieces of the Open Education movement have now come together so that anyone, anywhere, can author, assemble, customize and publish their own open course or textbook. Open licenses make the materials legal to use and remix. Technical innovations like XML and print-on-demand make delivering the output technically feasible and inexpensive.

The new development and distribution models promoted by the Open Education movement represent a natural and inevitable evolution of the educational publishing industry in a way that parallels

the evolution of the software industry (toward Linux and other open source software);

the music industry (recall the band Radiohead's recent "pay what you like" digital download); and

the scholarly publishing industry (recall the government's recent decision to mandate online public access to all research funded by the National Institutes of Health - some $28.9 billion in federal funding this year).

The exciting thing about Open Education is that free access is just the beginning. Open Education promises to turn the textbook production pipeline into a vast dynamic knowledge ecosystem that is in a constant state of creation, use, reuse and improvement. Open Education promises to provide children with learning materials tailored to their individual needs in contrast to today's "off the rack" materials. Open Education promises quicker feedback loops that couple student learning outcomes more directly into content development and improvement. And Open Education promises new approaches to collaborative learning that leverage social interaction among students and teachers worldwide.

If you believe that knowledge should be free to all who seek it, and that technology can be instrumental in removing the barriers to learning, then I'd encourage you to sign this declaration as well and foward it to anyone who shares your philosophy.

Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge. That's what we're doing. - Jimmy (Jimbo) Wales

So I just finished another batch of my never-ending assignments! Both of them are due tomorrow and it turned out quite annoying that both assignments from different subjects would be due on the same day. I was surely doomed to fail... How was I to complete two 1,500 hundred word assignments within the short period of time!? All about proteins, ions, carbohydrates and potassium!

'FAIL FAIL FAIL', spat the first assignment topic!!

'You got no chance tool', said the other topic...

But then just when all was lost.... When misery was beginning to ensue, when that sense of feeling like crap came in..... when all was just about too late.... something happened... what's that... through the internet jungle mist.... past all the vast repositories of on-line porn(HAHA I bet you clicked on it, PERV!), past all the club penguin word-press blogs, past any blog technorati can grab with it's tenticles on..... there glowing slightly far of in the distance.... is Wikipedia!

Ah, all was not lost! I discarded all those unneeded websites that I was goggling, banished the hoard of club penguin blogs, told technorati to shut-up and ping me another day.... I went to Wikipedia.... climbed into it's temple (sexual innuendo?) and it gave me everything I needed to know.... The blasted ass-ignments, no longer a threat wrote themselves.

I had now finished on time, two assignment beast's and I am proud for my victory. I can now throw them in the bottomless pigeon hole where they will reach the nether realm of the university den infested with skeksies -er I mean professors.

^Notice how the said individual's evil eye is portrayed, signifying their lust for constant supplies of assignments!*

[Think really fast advertisement voice]*Above image may not be representative of all evil lecturers, variations may apply, for premature ejaculation do see your physician.

They will analyze the beastly assignments around their dark crys... er Meeting room (aka coffeDrinksR-us), glancing at their disgusting appearance (stainingthem on occasion), then throwing them into the fiery pit, (Aka 'student assignment collection chute') where those brave enough to venture into that hall observe the charred remains of these disgusting creatures (10/10?fail?pass?).

......Ugh OK I think that's enough role play for one blog.... To sum up:Wikipedia rocks, and had it not been for it's ease of access of so many articles on so many scientific terms and topics, I surely would have had no chance at still being at UNI. Since I first used the Calcium article verbatim for my chemistry project ("Ass Q's: write about calcium") back in year 12, to the current battle, Wikipedia helps me through the way....and with that, I am forever grateful.

Great to see Wikipedia at 10 milion articles (English version with 2.3 mil) Can't wait to celebrate the 20 millionth article with the 5th million English Wikipedia article..... I wonder what will be the 20 millionth Wikipedia article? A club penguin blog of notability perhaps?

------------------------------------

There are no opposing views..... Everyone loves Wikipedia.... You love wikipedia.... Come give Wikipedia a hug.... (1984 ref... and I can't be bothered making another damn link Lol)

Doesn't this advertisement make it appear as if Jimmy Wales endorses American Express? The fact that this is a solicitation for a sponsored forum is not, let us say, brought to prominence. Comments welcome.

As mentioned for day 1 of the SMX Social Media Conference in Long Beach, Day 2 was equally as impres

As mentioned for day 1 of the SMX Social Media Conference in Long Beach, Day 2 was equally as impressive. Day 1 was more of the nuts and blots of the tools available. Day 2 was more about how we as marketers can use these tools to enhance communities. And I am careful to use the words "to enhance communities". Social Media and Social Marketing should not be about clubbing customers or prospects over the head with shotgun marketing messages. It should be about creating a conversation, cultivating relationships, and delivering results.

I have pulled from dormancy many of my social web 2.0 accounts now that I have a better context for them. This includes:

Twitter - http://www.twitter.com/kstraw - a great way to micro blog and keep contacts informed

Digg - http://digg.com/ - rate items of interest - articles, blog posts, and more

Reddit - http://reddit.com/ - reddit is a source for what's new and popular online. Vote on links that you like or dislike and help decide what's popular, or submit your own!

All of these are great ways to keep up with information and people. It also provides opportunities to update others as well.

I enjoyed hearing Jason Calacanis, Randy Woods, Jimmy Wales and Michael Gray. Too bad Vanessa Fox was not there.

Again, I would highly recommend attending this show for anyone looking to build marketing relationships.

BTW...make sure to get the 4x4 at In-n-Out when in Cali...
