Last night was the commencement of gig-season in Oxford. After the summer lull and a financial lull, I have once more been able to secure two month's worth of sufficient giggage due to a flyering job for the venue. I have my own thoughts on this (mainly paper-wastage guilt but also due to the fact that no one wants leaflets) but it does seem to get me onto guest lists for Carling Academy venues, which I am thoroughly exploiting.

Thus the first gig of the season was the long haired guitar thrashing trio that is Bromheads Jacket. I managed to drag two friends along with me and between us we had pictured them as a guilty pleasure; fairly generic indie dressed in uniform skinny jeans and waistcoats with carefully shaggy hair. The frontman sounds like a male Kate Nash, if that helps.

But we were in for quite a surprise. First of all, the room was a complete sausage-fest, not to use too crude a term. And not the usual Monday night indie crowd either, but what turned out to be a group of laddy type lads following the tour - they had beards and everything. And so raucous! They heckled throughout.

The second surprise was that Bromheads Jacket are simply not an indie band, despite the fact that they sound like an indie band. On their Myspace page they describe themselves as punk rock, but unfortunately for them and their potential fans, they come across as 'indie wank.' Not to use too crude a term. They came on in ripped jeans and with rock-star style straggly hair (perhaps this is the inspiration behind the 'Bromhead' element of their name) and immediately apologised for being late, as when they had gone to see Rage Against the Machine the band had come out an hour late without apologising and they didn't like that. This was rather touching, especially since there were only 40 people in the audience, and half of them seemed to be the frontman's cousin's friends.

They started with a few new numbers, Speaker Box and Don't Leave, which were incredibly guitar-thrashy and rock like considering the things I had heard like What if's maybe's and Poppy Bird come across like something Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong could have written on an off-day. They bashed around the stage, long hair flying everywhere - the drummer to the extent that it looked like he was hitting his head with the drumsticks instead of the drums. But it was very good. The crowd weren't the dancing type (they were too busy punching each other in the arm and crumpling beer cups) but they did shout all the words along. Bromheads have been coming to Oxford for a while, it seemed, and they had a whinge about the credit crunch and consequently the rising prices of food on the Cowley Road.

They also played two cover versions, both of which worked extremely well if they were a little hard to recognise. The first was perhaps a stock cover version for most musicians and/or kareoke artists - Nancy Sinatra's These Boots are Made for Walking. The second perhaps better, or at least won more points for originality in a cover version; Mike Skinner's When You wasn't Famous. It went down a treat and the suspiciously young looking boy next to me in the crowd was for one song unable to mouth the lyrics in the way that teenage boys do, because they're busy being too cool to dance.

As the band were unable to employ a staff to tune their instruments, gaps between pairs of songs were filled with credit-crunch related banter while they re-tuned, which proved entertaining. Due to the tiny size of the gig I was able to recommend them away from the expensive organic burger restaurant (I may be the millionth person in the U.K. to say this - and the hundred millionth to read it in the Guardian - but what happened to normal burgers?) and over to the more economically appreciable Spice Village at the tatty end of Cowley Road.

After the gig ended the band were in the crowd, or what was left of it, signing things and having a chat, so we went over to get a post-it signed with eyeliner (in the unlikely event that they become famous and it might be worth something on Ebay in these credit crunchy times) and congratulate them on not living up to our expectations of indie wank. The frontman took this gracefully and was in fact very friendly, talking about their tour until we were ushered out by security.

Overall it was a good start to gig-season, and I am able to enjoy it more now I don't have to pay entrance fees and suffer from franchise guilt now the Zodiac club has been turned into a Carling Academy venue. I think Bromheads Jacket deserve a second chance, or at least a live recording, as their first few albums are really quite deceiving.

Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong tenían que ser el próximo hype y a causa de, imagino, la no alineación de los astros durante la última luna nueva no lo será o va a tardar un poco más de lo previsto a serlo. Esta banda británica tenía grabado su disco de debut, que debía publicarse el pasado 4 de agosto pero unas semanas antes, sin embargo, la banda decidió no publicar el álbum. Éste ya estaba listo e incluso varios medios, entre ellos los siempre objetivos de la NME inglesa, recibieron la copia promocional para hacer la crítica y esas cosas. Y cuando estaba todo casi listo, con la reseña ya en papel, los Jing Jang Jong va y deciden que no, que han mejorado mucho como músicos y que lo grabado no les refleja como banda. Sin embargo, el mundo ya lo puede escuchar porque nadie se escapa de las garras de las filtraciones.

Está por ver, entonces, si Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong van a mantener la idea de volver a entrar en el estudio para regrabar los temas que conformar su álbum de debut para editar una segunda edición corregida del mismo. Como suele ocurrir, la señora de la limpieza de la discográfica o el perro de la secretaria se hicieron con una copia del máster y decidieron darle una salida para que los primeros fans (que los hay, ¡incluso tienen un desactualizado myspace!) pudieran apreciar cómo sonaban antes de mejorar. No obstante, y para rizar el rizo, no he sido capaz de encontrar la filtración, sino sólo algunos temas que ni siquiera sé si son la versión que iban a ser incluidos en este no-disco.

Recent  terrorist trouble in Xinjiang, has meant that local indie tribute band Ho Lean & The Xinjiang Xong, have dropped out of the Olympic opening ceremony. Lead singer Ho Lean explained "It's not about the terrorist threat, or the fact that we annoy people, lots, we just felt it''s come too early in our career....anyway we want to make music that a tribe in Papua New Guinea can relate to...I want to be an other-worldly being! (CUCKOO!)

I was aware of the first few on the list. But I neglegted the latter. But suddenly they are all over the place. It is time to review all 10 and they are all certainly worth a listen.

It was:

1. Adele - it happened. and she went big. we'll see what she's got to offer in future. the game is on.

2. Duffy - mercy was and still is all over the place. great voice, but a bit to dusty springfield revival for me. but you go girl.

3. The Ting Tings - that's not my name! what a tune. and they cover many music magazines these days.

4. Glasvegas - i'm over it, but they are slowly sneaking to the top.

5. Foals - i loved them over a year ago when i saw them at korova, liverpool. they have yet to make it big and they already had their feautre on uk's show skins. time is running out in my opinion. sadly.

6. Vampire Weekend - very impressive melodies from these (rich boys) New Yorkers, and they are buzzing on the island.

7. Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong - mmh. Didn't do it for me but for many others it seems.

8. Black Kids - these floridians are a huge hit at o2 wireless and a favourite these days.

9. MGMT - you can believe the hype. They opened for Radiohead and have more promising shows coming up around the world.

10. Santogold - she's so 80's but so much fun. a domesticated version of M.I.A. with her own edge.

It seems the BBC are doing their job! Or maybe they just are a great media company to have behind you, allowing the bands they touch become the new big thing..

Loads of footage from the Boys' appearance on The Nokia Green Room, which was filmed on May 31, 2008 and aired today (June 8, 2008 ), thanks to the wonders of YouTube!

The Premise of The Nokia Green Room is to put artists in a green room and watch them interact through "hidden cameras" as they wait to perform. They appeared on the show with Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong, Elliot Minor, and Bryn Christopher. Duncan James, formerly of the band Blue, and Tara Palmer-Tompkinson also make appearances.

The wrestling mask and Hulk hands were only part of the JoBro antics we get to see. Kevin has Joe jumping through hoops and Joe lives up to the name "Danger". They get some advice on burnout and crazy fans, and play a great performance.

It is really nice to see the Guys interact with their industry peers...well, in the UK anyway!

Hola lectores, he vuelto con muy benas cosas para compartir. Con la energía de Faster, me puse las pilas y encontré algunas novedades.

Con la mente volátil y las loqueras de Rivers Cuomo la verdad yo ya no esperaba un nuevo disco de Weezer, pero bueno, grata y sorpresivamente aununciaron hace ya tiempo un nuevo disco. El Album Rojo estará disponible el 24 de Junio. Pero hoy, el sencillo Pork & Bens está con nosotros. Excelente! Muy Weezer, muy rocker! Ojalá hagan tour y ojalá vuelvan a pasar por nuestro país. Pork & Beans (genial título jaja) estará a la venta a partir del 24 de este mes.

Pero bueno, no sólo Weezer anda estrenando. The Zutons andan haciendo lo propio con Always Right Behind You, del disco You Can do Anything, el cual será el tercer album en la carrera de los chicos de Liverpool y que saldrá el 2 de junio. La canción está bastante pegajosa, tiene potencial de ser una de esas canciones que te pone de buenas a pesar de que la legión de gordas de AMLO se interponga en tu camino :P

New Adventures es un grupo formado en Londres (posiblemente descubiertos en Manchester) y que tiene claras y fuertes influencias de Embrace (digamos que los hermanos McNamara son sus padrinos mágicos), excepto por el emolook del vocalista, que a veces parece Robert Smith o en el peor de los casos Saúl Hernández golden age jajajaja. Pero bueno tienen canciones muy muy buenas. Ya les habíamos hablado de ellos aquí, pero hoy les traemos sus excelentes rolitas n_n

Bueno ya que tienen para escuchar el disco de  los Charlatans,  como dura poco aquí les dejo como un extra el más reciente single de Joe Lean & The Jing Jang Jong, Lonely Buoy.

Dentro de un tiempo escribiré algo más extenso e informativo acerca de esta banda para nuestra sección Introducing.. (que usted debería visitar) . Seguro también para 10:1 pero yo creo todo esto será cuando al menos ya se anuncie un disco. Por ahora, diremos lo básico. Ella es Katie White. El es Jules de Martino. Ella canta y toca la guitarra. El hace coros y toca la batería. Eso es en vivo, porque en el estudio los dos hacen de todo, además de confiar bastante en la tecnología. Son de Manchester y recuerdo que yo los conocí gracias a esa noche quincenal que tiene Danny McNamara de Embrace en un club de Manchester, donde reune a las mejores bandas nuevas que encuentra en myspace para que la gente los conozca. Así que Danny, gracias. Jaja. Tienen dos singles, That's Not My Name y Fruit Machine, este último limitadisimo a 500 viniles vendidos solo en sus conciertos. Ahora viene su 3er single, el primero con video y se llama Great DJ y aquí lo tienen.

Y eso no es todo, para que los conozcan más, aquí estan las versiones de estudio de That's Not My Name y Great DJ, además de una presentación en vivo en Morning Becomes Eclectic, de excelente calidad y donde podrán encontrar la también excelente Fruit Machine.

Luego tenemos a Joe Lean And The Jing Jang Jong. Ya estuvieron en la lista de singles del año pasado aquí con Lucio Starts Fires, y ahora regresan fuerte con Lonely Buoy.

Y por último, The Kooks. Esta canción se llama Always Where, y justo este video lo pusimos hace unos meses en este sitio (aunque ya no esta disponible y como yo sigo sin mi computadora, no lo puedo subir de nuevo). A mí me gusto mucho desde que vi la presentación y pues ahora me entero que va a ser el primer single del nuevo disco, Konk. Así que en lo que conseguimos la versión de estudio, vean Always Where en vivo.

We followed the strict instructions of our bellies rumbling and went straight to the Printworks for some food, deciding on Old Orleans, where I had some kind of chicken meal, that was so not worth it's price, but it filled a gap.

On from there, we went to Urbis

and had a good nosey around the Factory Records/Hacienda exhibition which is soon closing, and we so wanted to squeeze it in. It was brilliant, and I was happy to see that even Damon Gough (Badly Drawn Boy) got a few words in on some of the videos (especially as he's a real favourite of mine).

Time wasn't on our side by this point, so after Alex had prised me away from the Urbis shop where I had my head stuck in a book called "Manchester By Air" for a good half an hour, we had to head home to meet Rob and Gemma who were coming over for the NME Awards Tour gig that evening.

They were waiting outside the house in Rob's car as we appeared around the corner, and I introduced myself to Gemma, who seemed nice and everyone came inside to get a drink and get ready for the night. I took longer than most (it's my age!), and in the meantime, Alex took Rob and Gemma to get some food at the pub in Sale, whilst John and Krista waited for me. We went to meet them, and after a couple of beers, headed into Manchester on a perfectly timed tram journey.

Once at the Academy, we were shocked at the length of the queue (and the average age of the queue-er as it even made Krista feel old, and at 21 that's no mean feat!), so we headed into The Oxford (formerly Hogshead) for a couple, where we spotted Mark Radcliffe (or is it Riley?) from Mark and Lard fame. Alex and I were just telling everyone how we'd seen him in there several years before, when he appeared! Alex wanted to go and have his picture taken with him, but I talked him out of it and told him to play things cool with "celebrities" as it's just embarrassing.

We headed over to the Academy, but we'd missed the Ting Tings, and Alex and I were gutted. They were one of the bands we were most looking forward to seeing, but we trampled on in anyway to the sound of Does It Offend You, Yeah? who I thought were brilliant, in disagreement with the majority of the crowd who were shouting "Get Off" and were chucking shoes into the faces of the band. Extremely rude, but I shimmied and bopped to the electro-pop madness whilst those around me looked on slightly questioningly.

Next on were Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong, after quite a lengthy interval, and they were more than worth waiting for, even if to just eye up the cute indie mod-suited boys with funky hair and skinny legs which dwindled down into their pointy, shiny shoes. Lucio Starts Fires was amazing, and the crowd responded well to them, so it upped the anti, ready for The Cribs to come on and let rip!

After an even longer interval, The Cribs came on, and Ryan Jarman was on form acting like a loon and ripping off clothing. After dedicating a song to the "4th Jarman brother who died just over 2 weeks ago", he revealed his torso and stage-dived, only to reappear several minutes later (all limbs intact - how do they do that?), and finish off the set.
Suddenly, I felt someone fall into the back of me legs, and I turned round to see it was a girl. It took me a few moments to realise, it wasn't just any girl, but Gemma! She'd fainted, and Rob acted like a true hero and carted her outside whilst I went to get her some water from the bar. All at the same time Johnny Marr appeared on stage and he and The Cribs fired into The Smiths's Panic, and I was so glad I'd volunteered to get the drink, meaning I managed to catch this moment!
John was ecstatic, Johnny Marr was one of his heroes, and he managed to catch it too, with a smile so big across his face!

I took the drink outside for Gemma, and something really strange happened. Earlier in the night, we'd been stood next to a guy who looked exactly like Darren, my ex-boyfriend. It wasn't him, I heard him talk and his voice wasn't deep enough, but in the first few moments of seeing him, I felt nstantly nervous.
Well, whilst walking towards the wall where Rob and Gemma sat huddled, Gemma in Robs jacket to keep warm, I walked past 2 faces I recognised from my past. One of them was drunk and shouting and looking like trouble, whilst the other one looked exasperated and stressed out, along with upset. The drunken bloke was an ex of mine, although not Darren, and the exhausted girl was his girlfriend who I had also known in the past.
I don't particularly like smugness, but at that time, I felt a little smirk rise across my face as I turned and saw my beautiful Alex following me outside, not drunk, and not shouting, and not looking the least like trouble. How lucky I felt to be rid of connections with people like him, and to have my nice, normal people in my life who cause me little stress.

Todo empezó con las Pipettes. Como sabrán (o no) el trío de Brighton tiene una banda que es la que genera la música, y se hacen llamar The Cassettes. En The Cassettes había un baterista, que se hacía llamar Robin of Loxley. El se hizo novio de Rose (la que no es rubia) de las Pipettes, y así conoció al hermano de esta. Con él, empezó a tocar y formó una banda, que hizo que dejara a las Pipettes y también su carrera como actor (ha actuado en series de televisión en Inglaterra). Y asi nació Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong, con el ex-baterista de las Pipettes ahora conocido como Joe Lean en el papel principal. Y este es su gran primer single, Lucio Starts Fires.

One Night Only - You And Me:  Creo que si me dicen que acaban de salir de la secundaria, se las creo.  Tienen unos demos mejor que esta todavía.

Ahora el plato fuerte, el EP en vivo del que ya les habíamos hablado de The Rifles. Incluye el nuevo single y una versión de Peace & Quiet para dejar la piel chinita.

Y para finalizar, otro video mas. Uno muy raro, por cierto.  La nueva versión de I Found Out de los Pigeon Detectives.  Casi igual a la del disco pero, no tan buena según yo. Que bueno que tenemos la del disco.  Eso sí, sigue siendo una super canción, de las mejores del año.

• Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong son una banda londiense nueva, nuevita: llevan juntos apenas un año y su primer concierto fue a principios de este año. Dato curioso: tienen un “nexo” especial con las Pipettes, ya que el frontman, Joe Van Moyland (a.k.a. Joe Lean) aparte de ser actor, fue baterista de las Pipettes, de hecho en Glasto 2007 todavía tocó con ellas pero usando otro nombre. Además, el guitarrista del grupo, Tommy D, es hermano de Rosita, la Pipette tecladista jaja. Han sido (y serán) teloneros de Babyshambles, CSS y super Kaiser Chiefs. Su primer single salió justo ayer lunes y se llama Lucio Starts Fires. Aquí el myspace y el video:

• Unos de Yorkshire, son One Night Only. El nombre pues no es nada original pero suenan bien. Están chavitos y han teloneado a los Riffles y ahora turean con los Pigeon Detectives. Están firmados con Vertigo Records, label company de nada menos que Razorlight, DPT, BKB y los Killers. El single se llama You And Me y está bien pegajoso. Aquí el video y el maispeis right here

• Finalmente, ayer también ya por fin salió el disco debut, Matinée, del londinense Jack Peñate, ajá! A este sujeto, de ascendencia británico-española, seguramente ya lo conocen porque ha sido bastante promocionado. Bueno si no, basta decir que es un solista/guitarrista que llama la atención porque baila chistosón… Su single Second Minute or Hour salió en 2006, fue una edición de 1000 copias y cada una traía una foto polaroid diferente, tomadas todas por Peñate himself. Luego ya con la disquera XL (Cajun Dance Party, Raconteurs, Thom Yorke, etc.) salió Spit At Stars y Torn On The Platform. En septiembre pasado relanzaron Second Minute or Hour, que no es muy mi estilo pero está super pegajosa así que se las dejó aquí porque el video es bastante aburrido.
