Just a quick warning, I’m typing this directly into wordpress. I haven’t read it severa

Just a quick warning, I'm typing this directly into wordpress. I haven't read it several times throughout the week, done much editing or anything like that. What you're reading is essentially a rough draft. So, sorry for any glaring errors; if you can, please ignore the small ones. Thanks.

To thine own self be true. Know thyself. Who the hell are you? Many of us may think we know ourselves. Many of us may think we know what we want out of life, whether we know how to get it or not. I don't make similar claims. If I knew myself I doubt I'd be writing this blog. I doubt I'd be writing much at all. The problem with claiming you know who you are is that things change. Jobs, circumstances, addresses they all change and with that change comes a shift in your character. I think this is most easily illustrated by music.

This works for me because I've always been a lover of music. The music I listened to defined my life. For example, in Junior High I listened to a lot of Nirvana, Bush, Silverchair and Weezer. Obviously I was into grunge and a sort of indescribable inner pain. Once High School hit those tastes developed into things like Nine Inch Nails, and Korn. About halfway through Limp Bizkit came on the scene, only to be followed by Eminem, and strangely enough Save Ferris. After High School I wouldn't be caught dead bumping Limp Bizkit in my car. It was a thing of the past. I like to think that my tastes grew after High School. I got into The Pixies, Queens of the Stone Age, Ok Go, and quite a few more. I'm more open to classical music and country. I'll give a song a chance before I switch it off. Throughout all this musical transition there was one constant; Weezer was always at the top of my list and actually still is. I like Weezer a lot because even though a lot of their stuff sounds similar it's all different. Weezer has evolved and grown over time. That's sort of how people are. We grow and change and even though we're different we're still the same.

Just like many folks I'll pop in a Nirvana album from time to time and sing along remembering the days of old, but it's not the soundtrack to who I am anymore. I think who I am will always be shifting and changing, which may be strange to some folks. So I guess that's really who I am, a strange woman.

Otro mártir del rock and roll.

Scheiß was drauf, was alle von dir erwarten, von diesem Buch erwarten, was du davon erwartest!

Was geht in Fabian vor?

…then the Internet killed the video star. As I sat around on Saturday, knee deep in bro-dom,

...then the Internet killed the video star. As I sat around on Saturday, knee deep in bro-dom, we tried to figure out why MTV stopped showing music videos. The more we discussed, the more one theory rose to the top. The MTV generation had the radio and MTV as their sources of music. When they wanted to hear a song they had to do one of the following:

Wait for it to come on the radio.

Wait for it to come on MTV.

Go out and buy the record or single themselves.

Wait for it to come on the radio, tape it from the radio, and then have it for themselves.

Now suddenly, my generation came along and this magical thing called "the Internet" arose. Now don't get me wrong, we still went through options 1-4. I remember in 1994...

***************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

sidenote here: I may as well get this out of the way now. I believe music in my generation peaked in 1994, so you'll often find me referencing that as my favorite year of music. Artists were creative, hip-hop was changing, rock was coming back from the glam and grunge days (though grunge was definitely still around). Let me just refresh your memory of some albums that were dropped in '94 (the ones I've highlighted are amongst my favorite all-time albums):

Dookie- Green Day

Mellow Gold- Beck

The Downward Spiral- Nine Inch Nails

All-4-One: All-4-One (Don't lie, you know that shit was hot then)

Illmatic- NaS

Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik- OutKast

Weezer (The Blue Album)- Weezer

Ill Communication- The Beastie Boys

Grassroots- 311

The Lion King Soundtrack (The first CD I ever bought...so a bit nostalgic)

Grace- Jeff Buckley

II- Boyz II Men

four- Blues Traveler

Ready to Die- The Notorious B.I.G.

Project Funk Da World- Craig Mack (for if this album hadn't been released, we wouldn't have the first [and best] hip-hop remix ever, The "Flava In Your Ear" remix)

Monster- R.E.M.

KoRn- KoRn

Resurrection- Common (though known as Common Sense at the time)

MTV Unplugged: Live In New York- Nirvana

Tical- Method Man

CrazySexyCool- TLC

Superunknown- Soundgarden

***************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Ugh...looking at the list makes me so happy and yet so sad for the current state of music, but alas, that's another blog post. As I was saying...my generation went through the whole waiting for music to come on MTV option. I can vividly remember some of the videos from these albums. From the little girl in the bee costume in the "Black Hole Sun" (Soundgarden) video to the cool animated water versions of TLC in the "Waterfalls" video. The Wizard of Oz themed video for "Runaround" (Blues Traveler) to the house party in Snoop's "Gin and Juice" video (sure, Doggystyle was released around Thanksgiving of '93, but Gin and Juice wasn't a single until January of '94...). The videos were fantastic though, and kept us engaged and watching MTV.

Then, something happened.

My generation hits high school, and this little thing called "Napster" starts getting buzz. Apparently, you can download any song you want...for free. Wait, so you're telling me I can get all the music I want and not have to pay a cent for it? Sign me up! So long going out to buy music. So long watching MTV for music, its right on my computer. Sadly, so long music videos.

Now I'm not saying there weren't great videos made after the P2P sharing boom online, but I feel as though it is a lost art. Sure, you get the occasional good Spike Jonez video and sometimes you get things like Jay's videos for "99 Problems" or "Blue Magic" but they're rarities.

However, there is a new generation rising. It's not so easy to just get music online anymore. Now you've got to pay 99 cents for songs. However, kids these days are going to YouTube to get instant gratification. You get all sort of fan-generated video content to go along with their favorite pop songs. I remember teasing a friend of mine from college that his music collection was non-existent, but then he explained to me that he just looked for songs on YouTube whenever he wanted to hear something, leaving the hard drive space to be used for...well...other endeavors. The fantastic thing about this, though, is that some artists are looking to make good videos again.

Michael Jackson once talked about trying to make miniature movies with each of his videos, and it is no doubt that he is the king of the music video. His videos were consistently groundbreaking and eyeopening. In the 90's, Hype Williams created some great hip-hop videos using the "fish eye lens" to create a whole different perspective (see Busta Rhymes' "Wooha!" video). Today, I'd like to highlight one of my favorite current video makers, Chris Milk. I've added a few of his videos below. Check them out. He's really one of the bastions of the music video resurgence as he's created some great videos for Gnarls Barkley, Audioslave and Kanye West. Hopefully he, along with others can bring back the music video star. I miss it.

Gnarls Barkley- "Who's Gonna Save My Soul?":

Man, this website is taking forever! I am officially a week late on the launch but that’s ok.

Man, this website is taking forever! I am officially a week late on the launch but that's ok. I saw a brief overview of the flash page thanks to Imagine Tech and it is really cool. So I guess I can say that it will be worth the wait. And! And the sponsors are eager to advertise and give free stuff away on here. Win Win! Ok, so here's a random blog just to tide it over about music to train to. You may have different choices so I encourage you to share them on here. Remember, I want this place to be one big info sharing love fest of fitness and fun. So, party on and here are a few of mine.

RUNNING!

The important thing about any aerobic activity is pick music with like beats and a relatively repetitious beat. Whether you mean to or not, the pace of your run is indicative to your subconscious. If you go out for a jog with stressful issues on your mind it is almost guaranteed that the pace will not only be quick but inconsistant. Same goes for the music. Progressive rock is not the choice of the long distance runner. Too many different beats, too many tempo changes and most of the time it starts slow, then changes too fast and then finishes slow. That maps out the same as a really shitty run. So stay away from Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Cold Play, The Beatles (drug years), anything new from Metallica (because it sucks) and usually any song over 8 minutes. Personally I go with Daft Punk, certain songs from Blur, AC/DC (because it all sounds the same) and so on. Here are some examples.

Daft Punk has had a long history with my running years. They stay consistent and it is fun to listen to without getting so wrapped up in the meaning of the song that you end up on the bumper of a Buick. "Human After All" is a great running song. And so is "Make Love". That's my trail running song and I have it on repeat for at least an hour. It sets my heart rhythm perfectly. Take a gander.

Weight Training!

This is when you need to step it up a notch. Having a melodic and repetitious beat can have an opposite effect on your mind when you are feeling the burn. It's okay to be angry here so turn up the volume and rock on. This is especially important when you are killing the abs.

This may not resonate with many people but if you want to get the adrenaline pumping there is no greater band to help you than Slipknot. I give these guys mad props because they have been with me for every milestone in my lifting endeavour.

I'm not a huge Korn fan but I love this song. In fact, it saved me from a possible 'episode' at the gym. True story: I workout at a 24 hour gym and sometimes I take them up on the 24 hour aspect and lift by myself. (don't do that) So, I had a long day and was feeling surprisingly energetic. I had a great workout and decided that it was a good idea to finish the night by pushing a new lift record on the incline bench. Well, upping the weight by 30 lbs proved too much for my over-zealous ego and got stuck on the bench with 225 lbs on me and no way to get it off. I felt like Tom Hanks in the Money Pit when he sank with the rug into the hole in the floor. I started laughing but the pressure on my chest made it difficult to breath. I had no way out. That is until I gained composure and this little ditty came up on my mp3 player and I turned agony into sheer anger. I lifted it off and quickly racked the bar. So, I owe it to Korn for...I guess embarrassment of staying at the gym until someone came in and saved me. So Thanks Korn!

Hot Dog Eating Competition!

If this doesn't make you smile then you have no soul.

So, that is a little blurb about fitness and music. It was random and semi pointless but I didn't want people to think that Macabre Fitness went to the way side. It's going to be bigger than Uncle Sam's nipples, I tell you.

I want to write more for this blog, I really do. Like right now, I have a number of good articles in

I want to write more for this blog, I really do. Like right now, I have a number of good articles in mind ("What makes a good lyricist?," a write-up on the new Okkervil River record leak, baroque pop profiles, etc) but I'm just so very tired. But I do want to write something, so for tonight, I'm taking the lazy way out and doing a "Shuffle Post." Herein shall we enter the weird and wild world of my iTunes library for ten songs, yet unknown to you or I. And for each, I shall mention something about it worth noting. Okay? Okay.

1. "Who Says?" by Richard Hell & The Voidoids ( from Blank Generation, 1977 )
I love Richard Hell. This isn't my favorite track on this album (that would be the epic "Another World") but it IS a fine example of the fact that one didn't have to play loud/simple to make it in the "punk" scene (in quotes because of the vague definition of such). There's a thoughtful, shaky tension to this song (and album)--as much (or more) in common with Television (which Hell was briefly in) as The Ramones or any of that ilk.

2. "4U" by KoRn ( from Issues, 1999 )
In my defense, I went to high school from 1998-2002. Actually though, this isn't that bad. It's not great or anything, but it has a kind of interesting atmospheric thing going on, and it's short so it's over before it gets too old. I remember when this album came out... I still want to learn to play the bagpipes.

3. "Creeper" by Islands ( from Arm's Way, 2008 )
I dunno, this album didn't quite get to me as much as their first (or The Unicorns album) did. But there is a certain pleasant groove going on here, even if it is a little... conventional, for lack of a better word, in that it hits exactly the notes a dancy "indie-pop" song should hit . Hm. It is catchy, though--well executed if not as daring as one might hope.

4. "I Fell in Love Today" by Ween ( from Shinola, Vol 1, 2005 )
This collection was pretty lackluster compared to the group's regular studio albums, but this song is great. You never know what you're going to get with Ween, but this one's anchored by a low, head-nodding groove an it never builds too far beyond that because it never needs to. It's the kind of song you listen to and it sort of automatically makes you strut, which fits well with the theme ("You people can't touch me / I fell in love today"). The guitar tone on the chilled-out solo is great, too.

5. "Triangle" by Tripping Daisy ( from Bill, 1993 )
I just got this today, actually, so I don't have much to say about it. It IS hard to believe this is the same guy who fronts The Polyphonic Spree--he's singing about a preacher jacking off on TV over a very consciously "slightly-post-grunge" guitar riff. As I understand it, this album was largely dismissed because of exactly that sort of self-consciousness, which I guess I can see. There's nothing bad about this so far, but it's not especially grabbing either. Jesus Hits Like the Atom Bomb is a pretty fine album, though.

6. "Casimir Pulaski Day" by Sufjan Stevens ( from Come On Feel the Illinoise!, 2005 )
I have a sort of a love/hate thing with Sufjan. On the one hand, he can be a little... much at times--overly precious, I guess would be a way of putting it. And this album did not need to be 22 damn songs long. However, for all his coyness, when he gets it right, he gets it right and this (along with "Romulus") is one of his two finest moments. One could write a novel from these lyrics--there's enough pathos and detail to back it up without being overly wordy or coming off as melodramatic as the subject matter (falling in love with a dying girl) could easily have been. It's beautiful and the banjo/horn thing he tends to work has the perfect air of slight melancholy without being histrionic.

7. "Ice" by The Microphones ( from It Was Hot, We Stayed in the Water, 2000 )
Phil writes such weird pop songs. Because this is a pop song, despite the fuzzed-out atonality, the rapidly shifting structure (no verse/chorus/verse here), the odd tinkly bells or static sounds or whatever else. It's catchy despite itself. That's why this was such a great band. I think his new band (Mount Eerie) is finally going to put out another one this year. I hope.

8. "Straight Freak Show" by Love Battery ( from Straight Freak Ticket, 1995 )
Sigh. My ex bought me this album so it reminds me of some weird things. But it's still good--definitely an unrecognized grunge/alternative/whatever band with a little bit of a psychedelic edge to them. It's definitely of its era, but there's a charm here--summer, soda, skateboards, that sort of thing.

9. "Snagglepuss" by John Zorn ( from Naked City, 1989 )
Somewhere in the ether, jazz had a hot, steamy threesome with metal and new wave. This album (all 26 demented tracks of it) was born from that perverse union. This song bounces around between "normal" lite-jazz passages and the sound of Zorn herniating himself on his sax over other freakishly tortured instruments--like a really freaky musical game of "Red Light, Green Light." It's awesome.

10. "Simple Song" by Lyle Lovett ( from Pontiac, 1987 )
It's easy for me to focus on Lyle songs like "If I Had a Boat" or "Penguins," which are so... charmingly odd, I forget he can be this damn pretty. Incidentally, Pontiac is a milestone of alt-country music and something everybody needs to hear at least once.

Actually, on that note:
