I have a cell phone pic that is pretty legit, but this damn blackberry won't let me post it. I'd appreciate it if wordpress made a BB app instead of just iphone apps (yeah I said it). Anyway I just had to break it first because I need an esteem boost. Pictures coming when I get back to my Mac (shameless plug).

Hey how are yall doing. My name is Kevin, but most people call me Keveeno. I am a recipient of a AAS

Hey how are yall doing. My name is Kevin, but most people call me Keveeno. I am a recipient of a AAS in Music and Entertainment Business from the great school The Institute of Production and Recording in Minneapolis, MN, and have a internship currently with 50 Entertainment that I am very glad to have gotten.

I believe that every step of the way to a dream is an accomplishment in its way, so each show that I help create is its own entity in a way. I believe that if music came out as more of an accomplishment of goals for the artist, rather than an accomplishment of money, than possible music will be better. I don't mean that all music is bad but as a avid hip hop fan, it seems that it has lost its roots and came to something more about money rather than about people. Hip Hop use to tell stories of struggles, and now its stories on gang relations that are more fake than KFC's chicken.

There are some people out there who come out lyrical but have no substance to it. It seems that everybody is trying to rap these days, and that dilutes what we hear which causes our ears to pick and choose something good out of what we hear rather than going out of our way to hear whats good.

As I babble on whats on my mind, I have my first day of my internship tomorrow so I'm off to dream of what could be if I get rich. But don't worry, I won't rap about it.

Peace and love

The mind of Keveeno

PS if you are wondering what aritsts I do like...

I just recently noticed while at a Talib/Naughty by Nature show this weekend that going to a Hip-hop show is kind of like playing simon says.

Commands are typically as follows:

1.) raise your hands

2.) swing m' from side to side

3.) "now bob your head"

4.) something of the "when we say_____you say _____" variety

5.) Something of the "now scream_____" variety

It seems as if the artist just says these things and the audience follows suit. I know about call and response and traditional African American call and response techniques and its relationship with the black church, but when it is a gaggle of white college students in the audience all of the historical cultural meanings die and it just turns into simon says.

I also think that it is because of the instruction nature of a hip hop show that so many white kids love m. I mean there is no room for misunderstanding what you are supposed to do. You just listen and follow suit. I mean there is no room for being the weird person not acting cool. You just listen and react accordingly. I guess, things can still go awry if you have no rhythm, but with dance dance revolution being so popular I think this is a dieing problem.

Anyway here is a video of Naughty by Nature...I loved seeing them cause it was a flashback to listening to my mom's MTV Jams cassettes on my walkman.

(Wednesday, February 06, 2008 - Warner)
Written by Talib Kweli

It is the last year of the Bush administration and thank God. I usually rail against being described as simply "political rapper", and I haven't voted since Bill Clinton first ran for President. I was following the tradition that Black Americans have had of voting for democrats since we got the right in 1964 (temporarily). Then, Clinton , as president's go, seemed better than Bush Sr., but I did not like his policies in Sudan or the constant bombing of Iraq . I also did not like the way our government dragged us thru the Lewinsky scandal.

I felt betrayed by the system, and I stopped voting, no longer accepting of the lesser of two evils. I knew the two party system was designed to fail us. I knew that politicians must lie for a living, because it would be impossible to make good on their promises. I knew about the lobbyists and the PAC. I did not make it my issue, but if someone asked me, I would explain why I didn't vote. Most of the time people talked to me like I lost my mind, but every once and awhile someone understood. I knew that our ancestors fought and died for the right to vote, but I didn't feel like voting for the lesser of two evils in a broken system was the proper way to honor them. It was pageantry, and I wasn't with it. I wasn't with Vote or Die, because I knew that voting itself, with no real knowledge of who is paying these candidates to run million dollar a day campaigns, is far from a revolutionary act.

I haven't even started to talk about the electoral college that they taught us about in grade school. In this republic, delegates votes are counted, and states with more land have more votes. You can technically have more votes, but lose the election. When the verdict is in question, the Supreme Court decides, as they did when Al Gore clearly won the election but lost due to bipartisan bulls**t. The bankers of the world pay our politicians, and often tailor laws and regulations to line their own pockets. I have often stated that I cannot participate in a system that not only is designed to see me fail, but corrupts itself as well.

This was all before Barack Obama threw his hat in the ring. I, like many, appreciated his effort from the sidelines, watching him do the dance on the news. I found myself relating to him and enjoying hearing him speak, but I still remained distrustful of politicians in general.

I felt like I could serve my community in many ways on a grassroots level that proceeded politics. I started to see the Obama campaign doing that grassroots work. I hear him speaking about poor people, the environment, things that I haven't heard from politicians who have electability. My criticism of the political system is that it siphons out rational thought because who have to be all things to all people.

You can't stand for anything doing that. I remember when Obama spoke out against the war, early. I think the time he spent as a civil
rights attorney on Chicago's south side gives him a unique
perspective. I often hear about his lack of experience, but his
experience is one that I most closely identify with. I'm not saying I
could be president, but I am saying that our government could use a new energy. In order for a revolution to happen, you need
revolutionary writers, soldiers, teachers, poets, musicians, garbage men, cab drivers, politicians, across the board. Everyone will not always agree, but the things we agree on, we should strengthen. When I was younger, none of this really mattered. Now I have two beautiful children, and Barack Obama is an incredibly positive influence on them. I want them to know they can be anything they want.

With that said, I still feel the same as I do about the political system, and one man can't change it. But this man deserves our support nonetheless. I appreciate what he's doing, and there comes a time in history when change is necessary for all of us to prosper. I can't be critical of a society that is scared of change, but be stubborn in my ways for the sake of it. I support Barack Obama and encourage others to take a real look at his campaign so they can come to their own conclusions. I am not delusional about what the office of the president represents, but my support for him is just that, support for someone speaking my language amidst an ocean of doubletalk. Thank you for you time.

Talib Kweli- Eardrum

Talib Kweli has shown time and time again why he is arguebaly the best rapper in the game today. Eardrum is just more proof of that. With an amazing combination of "socially conscious" lyrics, with the signature Talib wit, creative metaphors and smilies. And the major thing that stands out from his previous albums: His strong vocals and his strong presence with energy that wasn't seen in places previously is here in spades. Throw out the sales, throw out the awards, and throw out the charts, Eardrum may be the best hip-hop album released in 2007. (I know its 2008) An instant classic from beginning to end.

"There's been some great music floating around this year, but picking a favorite producer for 2007 going into 2008 is a pretty easy choice for me. Suburb.Suburb is pretty much the reason I started a Beat Tape series on my show. I had so much of the dude's music that he would send me, and I just felt like people needed to hear this. Anyone who's heard it has been a fan. He's really just that dope. The name may be new to some - mainly because most of his music has been circulating underground, hand-to-hand, without an official release. That should be changing this year though, as supposedly (stop slacking son!) he's releasing two projects early in '08 - the first is called Suburban Sprawl, a collabo with Donwill (Tanya Morgan). I remember him laughing on the phone once about how he purposely sends people beats that are hard to rap over just to see how they'll handle it.

Suburb + Donwill - Fly Me (demo)

The second is a solo project, A Coat of Many Colors. He's only let me hear some of it, but what I've heard thus far is alternately beautiful (Suburb - Synth+Strings) and harsh, distored, brilliance.

I've been asking and asking for the album but he won't let it out of his hands until he's done. Once I finally get it though, it's going into heavy rotation. And I'll keep the case on the rack next to the Madlib, Daedalus, and High Contrast."

i try not to do these kinds of posts too often because, honestly, i don't think most care too much about it, and this is definitely a music site. sometimes though, i can't help it.

courtesy of this piece of shit source of 'information.'

NEW YORK — A popular rap star's shocking claim before a Big Apple audience that his next album will be titled "Nigga" was emphatically denied Tuesday by his record label.

Not only does the rapper known as Nas not have an album called "Nigga" coming out in December, as he told a concert crowd on Friday, but he apparently has no album coming out in December at all.

"There is no album release by Nas on the release schedule at this point," a source close to Island Def Jam Music Group chairman Antonio "L.A." Reid told FOXNews.com.

"And they would be unlikely to release an album with that title. How would that look at Wal-Mart?"

But there's no doubt that Nas made the claim — which set the hip-hop community abuzz this week — during a Friday night performance at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City. The rapper's "Greatest Hits" album is set to hit music store shelves in early November.

Nas — whose hits include "One Love" and "Hate Me Now" — told the crowd that he actually wanted to call his last record "Nigga," but Def Jam wouldn't hear of it, and made him change the name to "Hip Hop Is Dead."

The rapper laced his between-song shout-outs with the N-word, which he frequently used to address his fans at the New York show, the last stop on the Sneaker Pimps tour (a promotional tour for the sneaker industry, as the name implies).

“Power to the people. Power to the real people!” Nas yelled to the cheering crowd, raising one arm triumphantly in the air. “This is our m—f— world. We’re going to do it our m—f— way. … Put your fist like this: real niggas only!”

The inflammatory word pops up throughout Nas' rap lyrics, sometimes written in the plural with a "z" on the end.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson denounced the rapper's remarks about his desired album title.

"The title using the 'N' word is morally offensive and socially distasteful," Jackson said in a statement. "Nas has the right to degrade and denigrate in the name of free speech, but there is no honor in it.

"Radio and television stations have no obligation to play it and self-respecting people have no obligation to buy it. I wish he would use his talents to lift up and inspire, not degrade, making mockery of racism."

The NAACP this week also threw up its hands at the news of Nas' claim, saying the idea showed a lack of creativity and was only perpetuating toxic terminology.

"We will not support and we will not continually be assailed by other individuals who want to use that type of term in our presence," said national NAACP spokesman Richard McIntire. "This has gone on long enough."

McIntire said the absence of such racial slurs characterizes the "real history of rap," a genre of music in which rhyming words are spoken, not sung.

"The NAACP believes in free speech. We are not a censorship organization," said Vic Bulluck, executive director of the organization's Hollywood bureau. "But we think is pejorative, no matter who uses it — even if it's to sell records. It shows a real lack of creative imagination."

Even Don Imus' camp weighed in, amid the controversy surrounding the shock jock's anticipated return to the airwaves in December, six months after he was fired for calling members of the Rutgers University women's basketball team "nappy-headed hos" on the air.

In a rather surprising meeting of the minds, Imus' lawyer gave the thumbs-up to Nas' proposed record title.

"It's a good thing," Martin Garbus wrote in an e-mail to FOXNews.com. "Words like that should be deprived of their meanings, and then they can't hurt."

Several prominent members of the African-American community who have been vocal throughout the Imus scandal, including the Rev. Al Sharpton and Oprah Winfrey, were unavailable for comment on Nas' remarks.

this shit irritates on many different levels. and i agree with Garbus, except that Nas isn't proposing to deprive the word of any meaning, but re-interpret it.

what the NAACP, Jesse Jackson, the people who 'buried' this word seem to be missing, is that the word in and of itself is a word, but all the causes of the suffering and injustice that is attached to that word can't be bleeped out. the craziest thing is that people assume that because a person of color like Jackson or Oprah Winfrey are speaking on the subject, it automatically makes them an authority on the issue. I would propose you help people think critically and de-construct the things around them rather then tell them that the way in which they talk is self-demeaning.

i have no idea how invested Nas truly is in spearheading a change in discourse or politics, but what he's proposing is still a very interesting, creative and progressive thing. take someone's worst insult towards you and the men and women and children that look like you, and do what's been done in neighborhoods and songs for decades, make it a term of endearment. take it back. name your fucking album after it.

i would be suprised if any of the heads of Def Jam or any other major label would actually have a moral problem with this. LA Reid said it best, it doesn't look good at Wal Mart, and since the US is stuck in Wal Mart right now, that shit won't fly. even though the images companies like Def Jam and others put out of people of color essentializes them down to dances, fashions, guns and all kinds of other things that are not at all as bad as using the word, nigga.

Edit: Nas responds, "If Cornell West was making an album called Nigger, they would know he's got something intellectual to say. To think I'm gonna say something that's not intellectual is calling me a nigger, and to be called a nigger by Jesse Jackson and the NAACP is counterproductive, counter-revolutionary."

anyway, here's a dope ass Blu and Exile song not on Below The Heavens.

Man, I totally spaced it today.

Being the music snob in my lil circle, folks tend to call and ask my opinion on certain albums when they drop. Well, a fellow music snob and I chatted today, and DOH! I suddenly realize...

I totally forgot today is the release of Kweli's new album!!!!! I feel horrible. I've really been waiting for this. But to be honest…hell, I don't even know that I knew it was Tuesday today. Now's about the time of the quarter where you just walk around dazed and confused from lack of sleep and too much Red Bull. Oh wait, but I actually go to sleep at night ("sleep when you die" my ass, Hank *smile*), so I don't know to what I can attribute the memory lapse.

Oh well…tomorrow, Kwe, I prooooomise. Just you and me. ;-)

Atmosphere - Number One

Atmosphere's shit always resonated as quintessentially hip hop. even through their more abstract shit, the first song, to their more quote-unquote emo shit, the last, they're delivery and approach always made sense to me. hip hop doesn't need any more boom-bap revivals, it needs people to push it and make things uncomfortable, otherwise it'll just be another genre of music.

Joseph Stalin and Bone Crusher all sewn together seamlessly within a bar. also, this seems to be off a DJ Clue mixtape from 2004, which just throws more monkey wrenches into the question of "what quasar did this motherfucker Jay Electronica come from?"

Kanye West - Homecoming or Home, either way, it's tight.

talk is, kweli and hi-tek didn't feel this song fit in the Train of Thought album, which is kind of a shame but i would never want to tell an artist how to present their work. still, this song carries one of the better hooks kweli has come up with in my opinion and just overall is a good embodiment of the attitude and perspective that kweli, mos, common and the rest of the late-90's indie boom generation were injecting into the underground.

btw, this is NOT a 'kweli was better when...' post, that's bullshit. artists and people grow, and if you ever supported them for their manner of self-expression, it's pretty ass-backward to then try to dictate how that art should be expressed, lest you be a hypocrite. if you don't like it, you don't like it.

as I'm sure the 3 of you who regularly check this shit (for more than just leech all the Jay Electronica stuff I put up) have noticed, I'm not really big on hyping up whatever's "hot" at the moment. still, after witnessing the advertising frenzy that is T.I.'s newest album, I started thinking about how an artists best work is hardly ever chosen objectively. take Clifford Harris for example, who was underrapreciated by the masses till around the time when he dropped the Jay-Z sampling 'Bring 'Em Out' in 2005. oddly enough, I'd say that's right after T.I. reached his zenith as an MC. Trap Muzik, his second album, still stands to me as his best, most rawest, most southern sounding album. he still hasn't made anything that bangs as much as 24's and Rubberband Man besides 2006's Top Back; Be Better Than Me and I Still Luv You are still the most effective introspective tracks I've heard from the man without getting all soft and bitch-like; and he did a better job of executing his alter-ego theme with the T.I. vs T.I.P. track than with his entire new album.

Jay Electronica - Bitches and Drugs

Re Ups : Jay Electronica - Victory Is In My Clutches & Jay Electronica - So What You Sayin' (prod. by Jay Dilla)

I don't know if I can think of anything else to say about this guy. oh yeah, I'm pretty sure the Victory beat is also produced by Dilla, but after I got a straightening out from the man himself about the Thom Yorke producing Uzi rumor from last time, I won't say something officially unless I'm 100%.

Talib Kweli - Electrify (prod. by Pete Rock)

one of my favorite MC's is back at it in a real good way. the hype is real, the hate is not; Ear Drum is official, please support.

Freestyle Fellowship - Inner City Boundaries

"I gotta be righteous, I gotta be me,

I gotta be conscious, I gotta be free"

classic from a brick-laying L.A. underground group that never get their just due. from P.E.A.C.E. to Mikah 9 to the now-bitter Aceyalone, Freestyle Fellowship laid the foundation for so many others. what? you thought today's picture was just for show?

first and foremost, my bad the site has been lacking my attention. reasons don't really matter, so just enjoy the fact that i'm back at it. the last video I posted was part I of III total videos taken at the same show. the rest will be up soon.

Southside (snippet) ft. Kanye West - Common

this snippet is from Kanye's internet-platinum mixtape, Can't Tell Me Nothing, and it is the most exciting song on there. why? well the last 20 seconds of the snippet go into a boom-bap throw back, with dizzying keys and a 'south side!' chant replacing Com and Kan's first version of the chorus. i'm excited for Finding Forever.

EDIT: one eyed deer just schooled me in the comments, that last part of the snippet is actually from Organized Konfusion's 'South Side,' and I admit, it completely went over my head. oh well.

untitled - Atmosphere

you would never know it because of the content so far, but Atmosphere is one of my favorite groups *gasp* ever. this is off of the new Sad Clown Bad Dub that's supposed to drop this summer apparently.

Listen (DJ Blueprint remix) - Talib Kweli

straight off the Blogroll. DJ Blueprint posted this remix to the 1st single off Talib's really, really dope new album (you should buy it) on his own site a minute ago. i thought it was flames then and i think it's flames now, check it out.

Man's World - Guilty Simpson

hot off the e-presses, the newest podcast from the fine folks at Stones Throw is pretty much one song, the single or buzz-single from an obvious favorite around here, Guilty Simpson. album coming out sometime after summer but a tour (with some bomb performers) in Europe will be starting much sooner, so if your continent doesn't touch the pacific ocean you should definetly consider hitting that up. you can get the podcast (read:slightly better quality) version of the track on the ST homepage.

Something to Hold Onto to - Bilal & Something to Hold Onto to - Jay Electronica

now here's something interesting, the same beat made into two completely different songs by two extremely talented artists that are below the radar. the Bilal version is smooth as a mufucka, but the Electrolysis version really highlights the hip hop-ness (horrible word) of the beat. both flip the same theme for the chorus in two completely different ways, i can appreciate that.

p.s. this also marks the continued coverage of Jay Electronica in hopes that he'll hit me back for that interview...
