I saw Man Factory wednesday night with my dad and Eric at Granada. It was pretty sweet. Jordan and I used to go see them all the time. The first time we saw them was at the Wreck Room in Fort Worth. When they came on the drummer, Mandrake (that is what we knew him by from their myspace), yelled "Wreck it up!!!!" and then they started playing. Since he was in the back it sounded like he was in a kitchen or something and it was real echo-ie. We were like oh shit this is fucking awesome from then on. Jordan tried to talk to him after the show and introduced himself as Ian. I later found out that he is actually cousins with Mr. Jonathan Smith. We saw them again in Denton at J&J's. Jordan was at a O.I. competition at UNT so he had his parents write a letter saying he could be picked up instead of taking the bus home. Ben Hicks actually just told someone to say "here" for him when they called his name on the roll so he could sneak out of there and go to the show as well. Anyways, the show was insane and they ended it with Outlawz and everyone was going crazy and people were grabbing onto supports of the roof trying to bring the motha fucka down. But then Jordan and I tried to talk to Mandrake again but all he would talk about was how the girl he was with is a "fox in the sack". Jordan got weirded out but then he gave us a broken drumstick. I have the half shown above and Jordan has the other half. Man Factory is gnarly charly.

Ferdi Bey, bu işe 1954'te çizgi romanları yabancı orijinallerinden kopyalayarak başlamış. Fatoş-Basri, Tenten, Zagor, Küçük Prens, Mister No, Mandrake... Tüm bu çizgi romanların kopya çizimlerini ya da Türkçe kaligrafilerini o yapmış. Yaparken de Lucky Luke'u Red Kit'e çevirmiş, Fantom'u ormanda on kaplan gücüne çıkarmış. Oğul Şevki Sayışman ise, işe artık kopya çizimlerin bittiği yıllarda başladığından sadece balonları yazıyor. ‘Benim hiç babam gibi yazı uyduracak yetkim olmadı, ama uykum gelince balonları yanlış yazarak değiştirmiyor da değilim' diyor gülerek.

Şevki Sayışman'ın İstanbul Sefaköy'deki evinin büfesi çizgi roman ve çizim kopyalarıyla dolu.

Masasında lambası, piposu ve eski çizgi roman ciltleri göze çarpıyor. Yeleği, dikdörtgen çerçeveli büyük gözlükleri, bir de ortalarda gezinen 2 buçuk yaşındaki torunu Simanur ile tam bir dede... Kaligrafi mesleğini miras bıraktığı oğul Şevki Sayışman onun altıncı ve en küçük çocuğu.

Ferdi Sayışman, 1926'da İstanbul Kasımpaşa'da doğdu. Uzun yıllar kimya ve yağ endüstrisinde laboratuvar ve rafineri şefliği yaptı ama küçüklüğünden beri bir yandan da resim tutkusundan hiç vazgeçmedi.

1954'te teknik bilgisi olmadan, kendi kendine 170 sayfalık bir resimli roman yapıp, satmak için Cağaloğlu'na ilk adımını attı. ‘Romanı götürdüğümde, ‘Bunu ufalt öyle getir' dediler. Tabii öyle bir imkanım yok. Ama yaptığım işi görünce Fuat Yılmaz, 1001 Özel isimli yayın için yurtdışında yayınlanan çizgi romanların kopyasını çıkarmamı istedi. Mesleğe öyle başladım.'

KIZILMASKE'NİN MEŞHUR LAFI

O yıllarda çizgi romanlar, yurtdışından bant karikatürler halinde geliyordu. Bunların roman sayfası haline gelmesi için ise çizimlerin geliştirilmesi, değiştirilmesi gerekiyordu. Ferdi Bey, o yüzden küçük bir kareyi bazen çevresine ayrı bir dekor çizerek büyük bir kare haline getirmek zorunda kalabiliyordu. Kızılmaske, Mandrake vb. onun ellerinde birleştirilmiş küçük hikayelerden, cilt cilt kitaplar haline geldi.

Zagor'u 550 cilt, Mister No'yu 200 cilt çizdi. Sayışman, bugün herkesin aklında iz bırakan uydurma cümlesini ise Kızılmaske'yi çizerken buldu. ‘Bazen bant kenarlarında boşluklar kalıyordu, onları da ben dolduruyordum. ‘Kızılmaske herkese anladığı lisanla konuşur', ‘Fantom ormanda on kaplan gücündedir' gibi lafları hep böyle ekledim.'

1970'lerde yurtdışından çizgi romanların taslak çizimleri gelmeye başladı. Artık sadece konuşma balonları boş bırakılıyordu. Ferdi Bey'in işi de yavaş yavaş çizimden kaligrafiye döndü. Hatta bilgisayar işin içine girince kaligrafi de bitmeye başladı. Şimdi sadece İnkılap Kitabevi'nden çıkan Red Kit'in kaligrafisini ve düzeltmelerini yapıyor.

OĞLUNA DA İŞİNİ ÖĞRETTİ

1980'lerin başında o kadar çok çizgi roman çıkmaya başladı ki, Ferdi Bey'e, birini daha bul, dediler. O da en küçük çocuğu Şevki'ye ‘Al bu Amerikan dergisini, nasıl yazılıyorsa taklit edip yaz' dedi. ‘Baktık ki adam derya...' diye ekliyor kendi oğlu için.

Şevki Sayışman, önce Tay Yayınları'nda Tom Braks'ta birkaç küçük deneme yaptı. Sonra kalemlerini alıp Ceylan Yayınları'ndaki Erdoğan Egeli'ye gitti. ‘O zaman 14 yaşındaydım. Çok küçük olduğum için Erdoğan Egeli bana inanmadı. Yazıları babamın yazdığını düşündü. Ben ancak önünde yazmaya başlayınca ikna oldu. Ondan sayfa başına 75 kuruş istedim, o da bana küçüğüm diye 125 kuruş verdi. İlk olarak orada Kit Taylor'un yazılarını yazdım. O dönemler ülkede sağ-sol çatışması vardı, bir gün okula gitsek 4 gün gidemiyorduk, ders olmuyordu çünkü. Ben de okulu bıraktım ve o dönemden beri kaligraflık yapıyorum.'

Şevki Sayışman, 1989'da Gırgır'da çalışmaya başladı. Ardından Ustura, Leman ve Penguen geldi. Şu anda iki rakip dergi olan Leman ve Penguen'in tek ortak çalışanı o. Lemanyak ve Atom dergilerinin de kaligrafı.

Şevki Sayışman, Penguen çizerlerince satır aralarında sık sık börek istemesiyle anılıyor. Dergide sabahladıkları uzun bir gecenin sonunda ona haber vermeden gidip börek yemeleri yüzünden... Bunun intikamını, beraber çalıştıkları gecelerde arkadaşlarından börek isteyerek alıyor.

İRLANDALILARA, SÜT İÇTİM DİLİM YANDI'YI SÖYLETTİ

Ferdi Sayışman'ın, daha sonra isim babası olacağı Red Kit ile tanışması 1954-56 arasında rastlıyor. ‘O zaman Lucky Luke'un maceraları Fransız Spirou dergisinde çıkıyordu. Burada da yayınlamaya karar verince, Türkçe ne isim koyalım, diye düşünmeye başladık. Bir arkadaşın çıkarmak istediği Red Rider (Kızıl Sürücü) diye bir dergi vardı. Ben de Bil Kit diye başka bir derginin kopyasını yapıyordum. Red kısmını Red Rider'dan Kit kısmını da Bil Kit'ten aldık, Red Kit oldu.'

Ferdi Bey'in Red Kit'e katkısı sadece isim babalığı değil. ‘Red Kit'te daima bir kenarda ellerini ovuşturan ve tabut hazırlayan bir mezarcı vardı. Adını Mezarcı Kamil yaptım. Gerçek hayatta, Kasımpaşa'da Kulaksız Mezarlığı'nın mezarcısıydı Kamil. Ona ‘kefen soyucu' derlerdi çünkü yeni gömülen ölülerden kefeni çıkartıp başkasına satıyordu.'

Sayışman'ın Türkçeleştirme işi, bazen kültürel adaptasyonlara kadar varıyordu. ‘Bir bölümde süvari alayındaki İrlandalılar bir İrlanda şarkısı söyleyerek yürüyordu. Ben de o balona ‘Süt içtim dilim yandı' türküsünü uydurdum... Beğenmediğim şeyi değiştirirdim, çünkü biliyorum ki ben beğenmezsem kimse beğenmez, ben halk çocuğuyum.'

O protagonista, o Dr. Paulo Mandrake, é um canalha de mão cheia. Advogado, bom vivant, beberrão, bem relacionado, charutão na boca... vive a vida num estilo próprio.

Pega mulher na maioria dos episódios e todas gatíssimas.

Logo no primeiro episódio ele já pega a Tiazinha, lembra dela, do Programa H e dos Ovnis? Tudo bem que o papel dela é de uma garota de programa, mas isso é só mais um indício do naipe do canalha que ele é: o cara vai num puteirinho pra solucionar um caso e acaba dando uma pedrada (sexo) pra ter informações e relaxar.

Outra coisa é a fragilidade dele... NÃO! Ele não é viado. É que as vezes ele se dá mal, mas em outras ocasiões ele se sai muito bem.

Fora o desfile de gostosas, a trama de alguns episódios é muito boa. As cantadas também são no melhor estilo canalha padrão: românticas, abusadas, absurdas... tudo pra conquistar a presa. Ética? O cara é advogado criminalista em pleno Rio de Janeiro...

Xandros Buys Linspire

This week Xandros Inc. is buying Linspire. Xandros has done more than any company to put Linux in front of users by powering the innovative eee PC so I’m excited to see the Linspire, Freespire and CNR technology go to a worthy competitor. Linux is going through some healthy and necessary consolidation which will give resulting companies greater assets and size to deliver on larger initiatives so Linux can touch more people.

I started Linspire several years ago to bring desktop Linux to the mass market and some much needed competition for Microsoft. To accomplish this we made an easy to use Linux without the religious zeal and crazy terminology which spooked new users. Non-technical people could install it in about 5 minutes on common PC hardware and have it immediately be on the Internet, playing videos, music, etc. (The 5 minute install is still an impressive achievement - checkout freespire.org to witness it.)

One deficiency of Linux is that it’s difficult to find and install new software. To address this shortcoming, Linspire built CNR Technology which I’m more excited about than ever. CNR is a marketplace where users can browse for software programs (free and commercial), download and install with a single mouse click. More than 10,000,000 Linux software programs have been installed via CNR which now works for Ubuntu, Debian and other Linux versions. New systems like eee PC need CNR which is why Linspire marrying Xandros makes sense.

I’m proud of what we tried to accomplish at Linspire. We spent considerable money and supported important initiatives like Mozilla, KDE, Wineconf, Gaim (Pidgin), Nvu, Debian and more. Although there’s a loyal Linspire and Freespire audience there’s no denying we did not succeed in bringing Linux to the masses as we intended to do. Even with Ubuntu’s success, Linux on the desktop is still the domain of software engineers and technical people.

Over the last 2 years, I have come to know Xandros CEO Andreas Typaldos. He’s an impressive businessman with considerable success. Most impressively he came from the humblest of beginnings as a Greek immigrant unable to speak the language. Now he’s running Xandros. He’s shared with me his grand plan for Xandros — it’s ambitious and goes far beyond the operating system to applications and management. I’m confident that Andy will lead Xandros to success and that is why the sale of Linspire makes sense. I believe Xandros will maximize the value of Linspire’s brand, engineers and technology such as CNR.

I've used Red Hat Linux, Mandrake/Mandriva, Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, and Gentoo.

Just for the hell of it, I tossed Freespire 2.0 on a laptop that was a few years old and it wouldn't recognize _ANYTHING_, much like when I kicked around the free copy of Linspire 5 I got a spammed coupon for.

*spire is the most broken Linux I've ever seen.

One deficiency of *spire is that software, codecs, and drivers are not only easier to get in Ubuntu, the whole smash is _free_

Linspire _never_ supported anything except Michael Robertson's outlandish lifestyle and extravagant houses and vehicles, it was a rapacious shark swimming around trying to gobble up open source projects and turn them into products.

The eeePC is overrated.

And he ends without telling anyone who actually bought a copy of Linspire what their future upgrade path is going to be, or when they can expect it, after sucking up to the CEO of Xandros which just bought Linspire for pennies on the dollar.

This is actually a great day for desktop Linux, we can finally bury the Linspire crapfest/diversion and actually get back to using a real operating system instead of something these slimoids try and market.

Also worth noting is how Xandros is almost bankrupt anyway and if it wasn't for the eee, then they'd have their nuts in the blender with bill collectors getting ready to hit "frappe".

I'm a distrowhore. Not as much as I used to be before I started working for RGIS again a year ago in February. Nowaways, I ain't got time to mess around or even fart around. Since 2000, I think I've farted around with over 100 different distro releases. I've even run Yellow Dog, Mandrake, and Slackintosh on an iBook.

Because I've not tried anything SuSe flavored since before Novell gobbled it up, I decided since this was a slow week at RGIS to give the KDE 4 version of OpenSuSe 11.0 a try.

Alas, I wasn't very impressed. I found it hard to use and counter-intuitive. But it did look great. Others have dissected OpenSuSe 11 in a much more technical matter than I. This is the punter's eye view.

Networking

Unlike any other distro that I have used, I couldn't figure out how to change from the wired NIC to the wireless NIC. I could get the wireless NIC to work with ndiswrapper but I could not switch from eth0 to wlan0 with the KDE Network Manager applet. Yes, I know how to do that from a shell. If I wanted to do command line, I would still be using Slackware. I'm a lazy sod.

KDE 4

I could grow to like it. My favie windows manager right now is e17 on Elive Debian. But the box the Lovely Lettuce uses runs KDE 3.5 and PCLinuxOS. Historically, I tended to prefer KDE over Gnome (I like the endless config options) even though I tend to like Gnome apps better.

KDE 4 feels like a new desktop in KDE drag. Even if it looks the same, it just doesn't feel right. But then I think of the difference between e16 and e17, for all practical purposes the only thing that is the same is the name.

I like change or I wouldn't be farting with 10 different distros on one box.

Multimedia

For legal reasons, OpenSuSe doesn't include much multimedia support. One can d/l such stuff from OpenSuSe repositories once the distro is installed if one clever enough.

Conclusion

OpenSuSe 11.0 isn't the distro for me. But I'm weird. I strongly suspect, nay, I know, that i am not the target audience for the distro.

This could be one of the greatest lawyer T.V. series of all time.  Originally a production of HBO Olė, it was originally in Portuguese, dubbed into Spanish for distribution into Latin America, and now is available in the United States on HBO and HBO on Demand with English subtitles.  This series is delightfully cheesy in the plots, the dialogue, the action, and the actors.

Mandrake (Marcos Palmiera) is a criminal attorney in Rio de Janeiro but never seems to go to court.  Instead, he and his law partner Wexler (Luis Carlos Miėle) represent the social upper crust who all have some slimy event they seem to be going through and need Mandrake.  One show dealt a client hiring Mandrake to get a pimp to allow a hooker to leave his brothel because the client is in love with her.  Another involves a transvestite hooker who has gotten her (his) clutches into a diplomat represented by Mandrake.  Yet another is Mandrake helping a man being blackmailed for killing his mistress.  Mandrake falls for his daughter and continues to represent the man for free.  Mandrake tells this girl who asks what so special about him since she knows so many lawyers, “I’m not just any lawyer, I’m Mandrake.”

My favorite episode has Mandrake having sex with three different women, playing a rough game of soccer, and getting beaten up.  His client is a hairdresser who is being blackmailed and if he does not pay, the blackmailer will post his gay sex video on the internet.  Mandrake stops this because, one he got paid and two his client does not want to be “outed.”  The only problem:  this hairdresser makes Liberace look like Clint Eastwood.  It’s impossible to think he is straight.  After saving the day, yet again, Mandrake ponders after being beaten up yet still foiling the blackmailers, “I wonder if I can still have sex with broken ribs” and after spitting up a tooth, “Have I lost something being a lawyer?...Everyone loses something.”

Gain a little something back and watch this show.  It makes you want to go to Brazil and get blackmailed.  Then you can hire Mandrake.

La Clase

Se cuenta por ahí que un profesor un módulo de FP en Desarrollo de Aplicaciones explicaba en clase que los buenos programadores solo usan Windows XP y pide que levante la mano todo el que también sea seguidor de la empresa de Bill Gates. Todos en clase, por temor a represalias por parte del profesor, levantan la mano, excepto uno con pinta de friki que estaba sentado al fondo del aula. El profesor le miró con sorpresa y le preguntó:

-Oiga, usted. ¿Por qué no ha levantado la mano?.
-Porque yo no utilizo Windows.

El profesor, extrañado, preguntó de nuevo:

-Vaya, y sino utilizas Windows ¿Que Sistema Operativo utilizas?
-GNU/Linux. -Respondió orgulloso-

El profesor, cuyos fanáticos oídos no podían dar crédito a algo así, exclamó:

-Pero hijo mío ¿qué pecado has cometido para utilizar tal chapuza?

El alumno, muy tranquilo, le respondió:

-Mi padre es informático y usa SUSE Linux, mi madre es asesora en seguridad y usa Debian Linux y mi hermano estudia Físicas y utiliza Linux Mandrake, por eso yo también utilizo GNU/Linux! -remató orgulloso y convencido-

- Bueno, -replicó irritado el profesor-, pero ese no es motivo para utilizar Linux. Tú no tienes porqué hacer lo que hacen tus padres.. Por ejemplo, si tu madre se prostituyese y se drogase todo el día, tu padre se tocara los cojones, bebiese como un cabrón y traficase con drogas y tu hermano atracase comercios y robase a abuelitas, entonces, ¿tú qué harías?

- Seguramente instalaría Windows XD
