I realized after obsessing this week over Beck's new album, 'Modern Guilt', that I was listening to yet another Danger Mouse production. What is this guy up to and what else is he working on? A lot, so it seems.

Danger Mouse (aka Brian Burton) is famously known for remixing Jay Z's 'Black Album' over samples from The Beatles 'White Album' to create, 'The Grey Album.' From there he collaborated with Cee-Lo (as half of Gnarls Barkley) to release the hugely popular 'St. Elsewhere'. He's also produced the debut album from The Good, The Bad and The Queen, and the latest releases of Sparklehorse, The Rapture and Gorillaz.

This year he's in top form with producer title for the following releases:

Martina Topley-Bird (from Tricky), 'The Blue God'; Featured Track: Phoenix

[audio http://www.entertainingspaces.com/ocmd/phoenix.mp3]

The Black Keys, 'Attack and Release'; Featured Track: Same Old Thing

[audio http://www.entertainingspaces.com/ocmd/08%20Same%20Old%20Thing.mp3]

The Shortwave Set, 'Replica Sun Machine'; Featured Track: Harmonia

[audio http://www.entertainingspaces.com/ocmd/01-the_shortwave_set-harmonia.mp3]

Beck, 'Modern Guilt'; Featured Track: Modern Guilt

[audio http://www.entertainingspaces.com/ocmd/beck_modernguilt.mp3]

With his influences firmly rooted in electronica/trip-hop, I'll definitely be tracking his next move.

by Tricky, 1995.

1995 produced some great albums: Radiohead's The Bends, Björk's Post, and PJ Harvey's To Bring You My Love, to name but a few. Kurt Cobain's suicide had deflated the angst-driven guitar rock that had dominated alternative music, and the first buds of what would become popularly known as electronica were blooming. With the possible exception of Björk, no one was exemplifying the potential of this new movement more than Adrian Thaws, late of UK alt-dance unit Massive Attack and also known as Tricky.

Maxinquaye, named for Tricky's mother (Maxine Quaye), is arguably one of the greatest debut albums in pop music history. What might have been just a watered down Massive Attack retread was instead wholly fresh and inspired. There simply wasn't anything else that sounded like it, and it sounded good.

Portishead had set the bar high for what came to be known as "trip hop" with their debut album Dummy the previous year, but Tricky's approach to the genre outdid Portishead in both psychedelic smoke and hip hop beats. Tricky brought a persona to the music, a conflicted, almost demonic presence complete with a balancing opposite in the form of then-unknown, angelic singer Martina Topley-Bird. Topley-Bird was Tricky's lover and the mother of his child, and the super-ego to the id and ego of Tricky and his music. "Suffocated Love" illustrates this: "I think ahead of you/I think instead of you," Topley-Bird's voice chimes in over Tricky's unfettered, earthy boasting. The dynamic throughout the record is entrancing.

Topley-Bird's presence could be construed as a holdover from the Massive Attack days, where a woman's voice often graced the band's somatic beats, but hers is a singular voice, a true revelation, and it made Tricky look even more of a genius. As it was, his music was innovative enough to inspire awe. Melding dub, hip hop, and rock in a bass-heavy soup, seasoned with sampled vinyl crackles, tinny percussion loops and audio snippets (the Blade Runner sample in "Aftermath" may be the crux of the entire album), Tricky was creating a musical subgenre unto himself. And while Björk has consistently been the more reliable artist, it was Tricky who collaborated with her on some of Post's strongest tracks that very same year: "Enjoy" and "Headphones".

The best known track from Maxinquaye is the cover of Public Enemy's "Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos", known here simply as "Black Steel". Rather than ape the original, Tricky provides an almost heavy metal backing track and minimal backing toasts as Topley-Bird takes the lead vocal, an inspired and subversive tactic that works to magnificent effect, removing the listener from any preconceptions to give the lyrical content a newly crisp impact.

Jocular attempts at gangsta rhyming ("Brand New You're Retro", built on a sample of Michael Jackson's "Bad"), lurid -- but still druggy -- R&B ("Abbaon Fat Track", "Overcome"), shimmering drone ("Pumpkin" featuring vocals by Alison Goldfrapp) and goofy observations on tripping ("Ponderosa") all intertwine seemlessly like a great mix tape, culminating with "You Don't" -- a moving bit of clarity where Tricky boils down his worldview ("I fight evil/With evil") -- and "Strugglin'" -- an unsettling glimpse into the darkest recesses of this artist's psyche, replete with the ominous, dizzying sounds of cocking guns, dripping water, wailing birds and Tricky's own raspy, unhinged giggles. The final track, the edgy, ethereal "Feed Me", neither closes Maxinquaye with a whimper nor a bang. Instead, it simply fades away.

More than any other record released that year, Maxinquaye is a wholly unique and absorbing experience that, like all great art, continues to resonate today.

While I don't think every album Beck has made is consistently great, I have always applauded him for the great songs he writes, and his love of working with innovative producers to give each album such a unique fit and finish. Odelay was probably his most consistently enjoyable album: though it encompassed a wide variety of styles and song structures, the delightful cut-n-paste samples from The Dust Brothers gave everything a slightly cronky, slightly wonky, very much alluring feel. 2005's Guero was, in part, a return to that style - after all, Beck was working with the Dust Brothers once again - but, for me, most of the second half of the album melded into one homogenous lump, leaving the album sounding very front-loaded. While Earthquake Weather and Missing were two of my favourite, and most inventive, songs of that year, tracks like Scarecrow and Go It Alone were fairly anonymous.

All these years of waiting for the next consistently great Beck album have made me very excited about his forthcoming album, entitled Modern Guilt. Not only does it see him beginning a new contractual agreement with XL Recordings (who are no strangers to reinvigorating artists), but it also sees him teaming up with producer-superhero Danger Mouse, who has been in a most industrious temper this year, manning the production desks for albums by The Black Keys, Martina Topley Bird, and The Shortwave Set, in addition to finding time to release his own Gnarls Barkley sophomore album, The Odd Couple. He's a cracking producer, often using vintage synths and keyboards to give tracks a retro soul feel, or just weaving his magic sparkle dust over good songs, to transform them into great ones.

The first track to be aired from Modern Guilt is called Chemtrails (it's in the box.net widget on the right-hand side, once again), and it's just over four minutes of swirling psychedelia and mysticism, complete with gurgling and whirring synths, plinky pianos, and cavernous drums. It doesn't sound like much else from Beck, but it does sound brilliant. The vocals are equally doused in a mist of reverb, making them difficult to decipher, but Beck sounds like he's in his starry-eyed observer mode, which is definitely an interesting change from the cutting sarcasm evident on his recent albums.

I must say, it's somewhat reminiscent of Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, and, if this represents only a part of the reinvention of Beck's sound, I'm predicting that the rest of the album could be stunning.

I think that Tricky leapt into my consciousness at the same time as Portishead did through a shared sample and their linking together under the trip-hop banner. Massive Attack had floated somewhere on the periphery of my awareness for a long time but it was Tricky that really plugged into my consciousness. He is one of my all time favourite artists and has to be one of the most sonically interesting musicians to hit the mainstream in a long time. I know saying that at the moment when he seems to be somewhat less active than he used to be might seem stupid but after the trip-hop morass swelled to include a thousand watered down imitators he stood head and shoulders above them all.

He managed to stay edgy throughout. Maxinquaye is definitely one of the defining albums of not only the trip-hop subgenre but also of that period of time, containing one of the best cover version of all time in Black Steel. Pre-Millennium Tension weaved a denser more claustrophobic soundscape around lyrics that are like condensed smoke moving fluidly through the psyche. Nearly God explored those same murky backwaters and dragged in some new collaborators -- Bjork, Cath Coffey, Neneh Cherry and even Alison Moyet. I don't think Angels With Dirty Faces was his best offering ever but it had him teaming up with P J Harvey for Broken Homes.

I think where he stood apart, for me at least, was that he didn't seem overly concerned or trapped by the idea that he had to out-strip his previous efforts by being wilfully perverse in how he crafted his sound just to stay a step ahead. His sounds came out of a very organic process as seen in the documentary that accompanies his video compilation best of.

I think he moved towards a more traditional model of hip-hop for a second there but he seems incapable of staying still long enough for a label to properly affix. And his is not a world consumed by the macho bullshit of bitches and bling. This is a guy totally at home wearing dresses and make-up and writing lyrics about being fucked in the arse. He is one of those people that you listen to and the chemistry of lyrics, vocals and music and sounds meld into an inspirational mix. Seriously -- try listening to him and not feeling the creative juices flowing.

He gave us Goldfrapp, he gave us Martina Topley-Bird and most of all he gave us himself and his unique take on the world and the style of music that he has truly made his own.

There is a bit of mystery surrounding the new Beck's album "Modern Guilt". Very strange that it was announced only 3 months ago that a new album would be out and then it's ready, not even all the tracks are known to date. The new album is apparently produced by Danger Mouse who has been quite busy since the Grey Album (Gnarls Barkley, Gorillaz, Martina Topley-Bird...), Cat Power is also announced for a guest appearance on the track "Walls". I predict Tom Cruise on a song about Scientology:)

Anyway, I can't say much about the new album but you can try the first single "Chemtrails" on his myspace.

Beck is calling Beck and I recently discovered this gem form the past.

[audio=http://thelonelyboy.free.fr/Blog/Beck-EverybodysGottaLearnSometimes.gp]

It's a cover from the famous tune "Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometimes" by The Korgis. Jon Brion kind of re-arrange the whole songs with more bass and violin for the soundtrack of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Beck is in for the vocal part. This song fits perfectly well in the film, it manages to create a very special atmosphere, deep and emotional. It somehow reminds me of the atmosphere in "Playground love" from Air on The Virgin Suicides soundtrack.

It's really striking how similar these two songs are, same theme (love, how unusual!!), similar metaphors ("I need your loving like the sunshine" vs. "You’re the piece of gold that flashes on my soul"), same tempo, same structure of the songs (the chorus and solos happen at the same time) and very similar low male voice, almost whispering to your ear. Still not convinced? Here's a home made mash-up of the 2 songs, just turning one down while the other is playing and vice versa.

Beck Air - Everybody Needs Playground.mp3 (4.8 MB)

Tricky's a funny one. Responsible for one of the great debut albums, he was never able to match it again. Having lost interest in him quite a few albums ago, he went under my radar so I had kind of forgotten about him. But this is pretty good - I've been trying to figure out how to describe it but I'm not sure how. It's his new single, Council Estate, on his new home, Domino Records. It's already been one hell of a year for Domino. There have been a line of ace albums - Lightspeed Champion, Cass McCombs, Last Shadow Puppets, These New Puritans. It also seems to be the return of the "trip-hop" bands what with the return of Portishead, Martina Topley Bird, Massive Attack curating Meltdown and now this from Mr. Tricky. His new album is due very shortly and will be titled, 'Knowle West Boy'.

Single of the Week: Santogold - L.E.S. Artistes
Simply head-and-shoulders above everything else released this week. While it's an entirely different prospect to previous low-key release Creator, it puts all those M.I.A. mk.II labels to the side, exposing Santi White as, if less interesting than her former tour-mate and collaborator, a little more diverse and potentially a lot more mainstream. Moves effortlessly from an almost restrained, cutesy verse into a skyscraping, overblown chorus. The video is also awesome. Whatever she does next, she's already released one of the singles of the year. Ticks all the boxes, really. Let's see...
Powerful, distinctive, female vocals? [TICK]
Vaguely alternative/quirky? [TICK]
MELODRAMA? [TICK]
Nice, modern production? [TICK]
Bland? [X]
Singer looking imposing on a horse? [TICK]
Single of the Week [TICK!]

Scarlett Johansson - Falling Down
Certainly the week's most interesting single release, and against all odds, one of the best. While the idea of Hollywood A-lister Johansson releasing an album of (mainly) Tom Waits covers seemed initially strange, it seems to have produced some intriguing results. While my knowledge of Waits is limited, his songs seem to have an underlying melody, often lifted by slightly eccentric delivery, that could easily be translated, in cover form, to something pretty bland and subdued. Scarlett's vocal performance on this track, however, while not remotely rivalling the great man himself, does set her apart as a singer with unique vocal talents, which don't rely on perfect delivery or high-note acrobatics. The biggest win is probably the fact that this is likely to draw people in to listening to more Tom Waits, as the character's still there, rather than acting solely as a standalone album by a megastar, which would have been the danger had blandness won out. Almost single of the week, but not quite. Still great, though.

Chromeo - Fancy Footwork
Another one of those songs that's been kicking around for an absolute age and is belatedly seeing a release that'll let the general public have a listen. It's a pretty retro-sounding, but lively, slice of electro that's great on the dancefloor and sounds pretty good on the radio, too. One of the better tracks of the week, in fact, but loses out on the basis that I'm a little bit tired of it now. If you haven't heard it though, very much worth a listen.

Kylie Minogue - In My Arms
After the moderate curveball that was Two Hearts, Kylie seems to have been covering old ground with recent singles. The trouble is, that even without a spark of originality, Kylie's pretty much incapable of putting out a totally duff pop record. The chorus is a bit of a performative work, wrapping itself around you in a cuddly ball of familiar Kylie joy. The video even seems to acknowledge the back-referencing, with a hooded dress not unlike the 'Can't Get You Out of My Head' example making an appearance, and candy-shop colourings recalling the ace video for 'Confide in Me.' While that serves to remind you that 'In My Arms' is entirely unremarkable by comparison, it also drives home the lovely reassuring Kylieness of the whole thing. I like!

Martina Topley-Bird - Poison
Martina's Carnies, out a few months ago, was an instant classic for me. This isn't in quite the same league - and certainly loses something in the live Jooools version above (MySpace for the more refined single take) - but it's still beautiful, brilliant stuff, that's leagues ahead of the rest of the current wave of wannabe soul-stars out there. But then, she was making Tricky's career while they were still in short trousers, and out-Winehousing Winehouse 4 years ago. Great stuff.

Cut Copy - Lights And Music
Comeback release from Australian band on label of the moment Modular (Muscles, Van She, MSTRKRFT, etc.) Dance music with guitars on top, rather than guitar music attempting to be dancey, which is very much a good thing. It's a slow build that only really kicks off in earnest about 30 seconds from the end, which is a shame, but it's danceable, atmospheric and screams quality.

Digitalism – Pogo
Worth placing next to the Cut Copy video, as it's cut from a similar cloth, but lacks some of the subtlety and, as a result, a lot of the power. It's still good enough 2008 electro-rock (with an excellent video) and you can definitely see it soundtracking sports round-up packages. Nice stuff, then, from the German duo, but perhaps a bit on the polite side.

Larry Tee & Princess Superstar – Licky (Work It Out)
Larry Tee, allegedly, coined the word electroclash, and (if I remember rightly) unsuccessfully tried to copyright it. He was certainly a pioneer of the 2002/3 wave of electro, helping launch Fischerspooner, the early (pre-pop) career of the Scissor Sisters, and, um, some lesser acts. Princess Superstar, well, a couple of hits a few years apart, but not much else. Anyway, enough rambling. The single is exactly what you'd expect of a collaboration between these two - i.e. full of single-entrendre hardly-innuendo, reeking of 2003, and, well, ultimately a lot of fun. Also starts out by taking a bit of a poke at the Mason video linked above. Good harmless, if a bit silly, fun.

The Lodger – The Good Old Days
Not to be confused with Britpop 'supergroup' Lodger (I've just been reminded how absolutely GREAT that single is, by the way. Click it!!), this is nontheless great stuff, and one of the best indie-pop singles I've heard all year. Fizzy, effervescent, summery jangle-pop that takes a fair bit from Orange Juice et al, but has a nicely distinct sound all of its own.

Laurel Collective - Vuitton Blues
London 6-piece who seem to be throwing quite a lot of different influences into the mix. Starting off sounding like it's going to go all electro on us, before adding some jangle-pop guitars, then a Gaz-from-Supergrass style vocal for a bit, before settling down into something exuberantly twee, summery and nicely offbeat. Definitely worth a listen, and looking forward to hearing more from them. (Video is a live take, go to their MySpace for a proper listen.)

Noah & The Whale – Shape Of My Heart
I've previously found acoustic-guitar wielding twee-poppers Noah & the Whale a little over-earnest, whiny even. Here though, they seem to be loosening up a little, with a pleasingly breezy whimisical number which benefits from a smattering of Mariachi horns and winds up sounding like a happy coming together of Adam Green and Beirut.

Animal Collective – Water Curses
Established Baltimore experimentalists going ever-so-slightly pop. This is pop of a dreamlike, hypnotic, buried kind, though, hidden beneath fluttery, skittish beats and samples, but still possessed of an addictive melodic quality.

The Charlatans - The Misbegotten
Fresh from giving away their new album through XFM, this is the Charlatans back on form they've not seen since about 1994. Appropriate, really, given that it's a shameless piece of early-nineties retro, harking back to Regret-era New Order/ Electronic. Tim Burgess has a surprisingly nice, almost pretty voice, which is too often buried beneath guitar sludge and previously best exploited in collaborations with the likes of Saint Etienne and the Chemical Brothers. This is more like it, though.

Fleet Foxes – Mykonos (from Sun Giant EP)
No video available for this, just the track, but worth including as this Washington band are currently attracting quite a lot of flapping and shouting from those who know. Signed to Sub Pop in the US, Bella Union over here, and thus cool by default, this is charming, pleasant, slightly psychadelic, melodic acoustica. It's got a touch of Midlake/Arcade Fire/Flaming Lips about it, but also recalls some more homegrown talents, like the Super Furry Animals and, here, early Coral. It's very marketable stuff which will sit nicely on the current indie-rocker-in-the-know's wishlist, but it's hardly reinventing the wheel.

Oppenheimer - Look Up
Loveable indie-pop-punk (with a bit of synth thrown in) from Belfast. Clocking in at just over 2 minutes, it has a pleasingly old-school focus on melody (recalling, while not exactly sounding like, countrymen the Undertones and Ash.) And it sounds pretty perfect in these early summer days.

Kelly Rowland feat Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes – Daylight
While Kelly usually comes into her own in collaborations, the presence of a Gym Class Hero man on this didn't exactly inspire confidence. As it turns out, it's sort of OK. Kelly's voice is more powerful than usual, and it's got a nice summery 70s funk vibe about it (perhaps filtered through a bit of mid-90s production). Hardly memorable, though.

These New Puritans - Swords Of Truth
Surprisingly powerful beats on this one, albeit ripped off wholesale from 'Get Ur Freak On' and thus not exactly cutting-edge. Massively let down by the overly whimsical affected vocals, but a definite improvement on previous single 'Elvis' and showing promise.

Kenna - Out Of Control (State Of Emotion)
Kenna, apparently, has been touted as the Next Big Thing for a few years now. But it's never quite happened. With material produced by Chad Hugo (Neptunes) you'd think it might have, but instead he's achieved notoriety primarilly in marketing circles. This song sounds like it's made for radio, all sweeping synths and urgent beats. All being well, it should be the track that breaks him, but then who knows?

Shaggy feat Akon – What’s Love
Surprisingly not as awful as you'd think, mainly because Akon largely keeps his mouth shut, leaving Shaggy to be his usual daft but entertaining self.

Attic Lights – God
Pleasant Teenage Fanclub-indebted indie strum from this relatively new Glasgow band. While previous single Never Get Sick of the Sea ambled along for a while before throwing away a chorus at the end, this one is stronger overall, a more solid effort, and much more likeable.

Captain – Keep An Open Mind
Like Delays (reviewed last week), Captain appeared before the current fad for lightweight mum-friendly guitar-weilding pop bands like the Feeling kicked off in earnest. This has more convincingly grabbed on to those bands' coat-tails, and should be able to pick up some of their fanbase as a result. Qualitatively, it's a nice enough early-summer pop tune, very safe and entirely lacking in edge, but not really the worse for it.

Wideboys feat Shaznay Lewis – Daddy Oh
UK Garage/general late 90s revival continues apace. It's got energy, and a bit of a modern edge to it, but Shaznay's vocals are pretty flimsy and it seems to trip over itself a bit too much, losing the melody in the process.

Wiley - Wearing My Rolex
Electro/grime crossover which has been all over Radio 1 for months. It sounds great on the radio, and is generally very good, tasteful stuff. A bit too tasteful though, perhaps? Lacks bite.

Will.i.am feat Cheryl Cole – Heartbreaker
Mainly enjoyable for playing a game of 'Spot the Cheryl', as though credited, she barely features. It's also lacking Will's usual sense of fun, and is, truth be told, a bit bland.

Natty – Cold Town
Oh good, it's the return of 'UK Pop Reggae', in Strummer's immortal words. It's fairly inoffensive stuff, I guess, summery and tuneful. Also curiously reminiscent of Lily Allen's Smile. It's fine, but the world still doesn't really need lightweight Bob Marley wannabes...

Ejectorseat - Not My Girl (EP)
One of those local-type bands (from Derby, in this case) that list a bunch of bands (including 'any band capable of making meaningful pop songs', ahem, in this case) that don't seem to bear any relation whatsoever to their sound. So then, not much of the Clash or the Manics in here, rather a US-influenced pop-punk sound that could actually rank as one of McFly's better moments. So not doing especially well under the Trade Descriptions Act - but it's urgent-sounding, cheery pop music that it's hard to hate.

Cazals – Somebody Somewhere
A distinct improvement on weak 'comeback' single 'Life is Boring', this still doesn't really punch above it's lightweight indie-rock category. It buzzes along like a lesser version of previous touring companions The Rakes, before kicking into an all too brief decent-ish chorus that recalls early Jam (if we're being kind) or early Ordinary Boys (if less so.)

Death Cab For Cutie - I Will Possess Your Heart
Despite having a very real soft spot for Death Cab's singer Ben Gibbard's 2003 side project The Postal Service, I've never really got the music he makes with his day-job. Dntel's Jimmy Tamburello clearly added some more interesting electro-influenced production to the Postal Service, but it's not just production that's lacking here, rather melody and depth. This, to me, sounds like a weaker version of latter-day Nada Surf records, which isn't entirely negative, but not thrilling either.

Single of the Week: Santogold - L.E.S. Artistes Simply head-and-shoulders above everything else released this week. [TICK] Vaguely alternative/quirky? [TICK] MELODRAMA? [TICK] Nice, modern production? [TICK] Bland? [X] Singer looking imposing on a horse? [TICK] Single of the Week [TICK!] Scarlett Johansson - Falling Down Certainly the week's most interesting single release, and against all odds, one of the best. Chromeo - Fancy Footwork Another one of those songs that's been kicking around for an absolute age and is belatedly seeing a release that'll let the general public have a listen. [http://youtube.com/watch?v=RE8EAqneUbM] Kylie Minogue - In My Arms After the moderate curveball that was Two Hearts, Kylie seems to have been covering old ground with recent singles. I like! Martina Topley-Bird - Poison Martina's Carnies, out a few months ago, was an instant classic for me. Cut Copy - Lights And Music Comeback release from Australian band on label of the moment Modular (Muscles, Van She, MSTRKRFT, etc.) Dance music with guitars on top, rather than guitar music attempting to be dancey, which is very much a good thing. It's a slow build that only really kicks off in earnest about 30 seconds from the end, which is a shame, but it's danceable, atmospheric and screams quality. Digitalism – Pogo Worth placing next to the Cut Copy video, as it's cut from a similar cloth, but lacks some of the subtlety and, as a result, a lot of the power. It's still good enough 2008 electro-rock (with an excellent video) and you can definitely see it soundtracking sports round-up packages. Nice stuff, then, from the German duo, but perhaps a bit on the polite side. Larry Tee & Princess Superstar – Licky (Work It Out) Larry Tee, allegedly, coined the word electroclash, and (if I remember rightly) unsuccessfully tried to copyright it. The Lodger – The Good Old Days Not to be confused with Britpop 'supergroup' Lodger (I've just been reminded how absolutely GREAT that single is, by the way. Click it!!), this is nontheless great stuff, and one of the best indie-pop singles I've heard all year. Fizzy, effervescent, summery jangle-pop that takes a fair bit from Orange Juice et al, but has a nicely distinct sound all of its own. Laurel Collective - Vuitton Blues London 6-piece who seem to be throwing quite a lot of different influences into the mix. (Video is a live take, go to their MySpace for a proper listen.) Noah & The Whale – Shape Of My Heart I've previously found acoustic-guitar wielding twee-poppers Noah & the Whale a little over-earnest, whiny even. Here though, they seem to be loosening up a little, with a pleasingly breezy whimisical number which benefits from a smattering of Mariachi horns and winds up sounding like a happy coming together of Adam Green and Beirut. Animal Collective – Water Curses Established Baltimore experimentalists going ever-so-slightly pop. This is pop of a dreamlike, hypnotic, buried kind, though, hidden beneath fluttery, skittish beats and samples, but still possessed of an addictive melodic quality. The Charlatans - The Misbegotten Fresh from giving away their new album through XFM, this is the Charlatans back on form they've not seen since about 1994. Fleet Foxes – Mykonos (from Sun Giant EP) No video available for this, just the track, but worth including as this Washington band are currently attracting quite a lot of flapping and shouting from those who know. Oppenheimer - Look Up Loveable indie-pop-punk (with a bit of synth thrown in) from Belfast. Clocking in at just over 2 minutes, it has a pleasingly old-school focus on melody (recalling, while not exactly sounding like, countrymen the Undertones and Ash.) And it sounds pretty perfect in these early summer days. Kelly Rowland feat Travis McCoy of Gym Class Heroes – Daylight While Kelly usually comes into her own in collaborations, the presence of a Gym Class Hero man on this didn't exactly inspire confidence. As it turns out, it's sort of OK. Kelly's voice is more powerful than usual, and it's got a nice summery 70s funk vibe about it (perhaps filtered through a bit of mid-90s production). Hardly memorable, though. These New Puritans - Swords Of Truth Surprisingly powerful beats on this one, albeit ripped off wholesale from 'Get Ur Freak On' and thus not exactly cutting-edge. Massively let down by the overly whimsical affected vocals, but a definite improvement on previous single 'Elvis' and showing promise. Kenna - Out Of Control (State Of Emotion) Kenna, apparently, has been touted as the Next Big Thing for a few years now. Shaggy feat Akon – What’s Love Surprisingly not as awful as you'd think, mainly because Akon largely keeps his mouth shut, leaving Shaggy to be his usual daft but entertaining self. Attic Lights – God Pleasant Teenage Fanclub-indebted indie strum from this relatively new Glasgow band. While previous single Never Get Sick of the Sea ambled along for a while before throwing away a chorus at the end, this one is stronger overall, a more solid effort, and much more likeable. Captain – Keep An Open Mind Like Delays (reviewed last week), Captain appeared before the current fad for lightweight mum-friendly guitar-weilding pop bands like the Feeling kicked off in earnest. This has more convincingly grabbed on to those bands' coat-tails, and should be able to pick up some of their fanbase as a result. Qualitatively, it's a nice enough early-summer pop tune, very safe and entirely lacking in edge, but not really the worse for it. Wiley - Wearing My Rolex Electro/grime crossover which has been all over Radio 1 for months. It sounds great on the radio, and is generally very good, tasteful stuff. A bit too tasteful though, perhaps? Lacks bite. Will.i.am feat Cheryl Cole – Heartbreaker Mainly enjoyable for playing a game of 'Spot the Cheryl', as though credited, she barely features. It's also lacking Will's usual sense of fun, and is, truth be told, a bit bland. Natty – Cold Town Oh good, it's the return of 'UK Pop Reggae', in Strummer's immortal words. It's fairly inoffensive stuff, I guess, summery and tuneful. Also curiously reminiscent of Lily Allen's Smile. It's fine, but the world still doesn't really need lightweight Bob Marley wannabes... Ejectorseat - Not My Girl (EP) One of those local-type bands (from Derby, in this case) that list a bunch of bands (including 'any band capable of making meaningful pop songs', ahem, in this case) that don't seem to bear any relation whatsoever to their sound. So then, not much of the Clash or the Manics in here, rather a US-influenced pop-punk sound that could actually rank as one of McFly's better moments. So not doing especially well under the Trade Descriptions Act - but it's urgent-sounding, cheery pop music that it's hard to hate. Cazals – Somebody Somewhere A distinct improvement on weak 'comeback' single 'Life is Boring', this still doesn't really punch above it's lightweight indie-rock category. It buzzes along like a lesser version of previous touring companions The Rakes, before kicking into an all too brief decent-ish chorus that recalls early Jam (if we're being kind) or early Ordinary Boys (if less so.) Death Cab For Cutie - I Will Possess Your Heart Despite having a very real soft spot for Death Cab's singer Ben Gibbard's 2003 side project The Postal Service, I've never really got the music he makes with his day-job.

Album of the week is Martha Wainwright's I Know You're Married But I Have Feelings Too. I gave the record it's first spin last night out in the back yard, eating some yummy BBQ. It's a much more mature album than her debut, and more stylistically diverse all held together by that great voice.

A long awaited release, and this weeks runners-up are hip-pop duo Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip. Hugely demonstrating to their doubters that last year's Thou Shalt Always Kill was no flash in the pan, this is a record full of intelligent rhymes, deft beats and plenty of humour. A fantastic full length debut, only beaten into second place by a Scroobius Pip beard-hair's breadth. The title track is a particular treat.

Also in the running for album of the week was Campbell & Lanegan's second collaboration, Sunday At Devil Dirt. Deciding that the formula of 2006's Mercury-nominated Ballad Of The Broken Seas was too good to break, the second LP is much the same. However, it is no less intriguing or satisfying. A rootsy, bluesy, cracked record full of songs about love and loss.

Death Cab For Cutie release their second major-label LP, Narrow Stairs this week. The band claim the record to be wildly different to previous outings, a dangerous game to play when your last record was so critically acclaimed. Pendulum also try and follow up a massive success with In Silico. Flight Of The Conchords follow their cult TV hit with an album of their fun folk songs that made the series.

Three great singers, three new albums. The most hyped of the bunch is Philadelphia's Santi White, aka Santogold. Her debut, self-titled album has been preceded by storming single L.E.S. Artistes. I hope the album follows that track more than her contribution to Mark Ronson's Version, I found her vocals on Pretty Green really annoying. The other two hae been relatively quite since their nominations for the Mercury Prize in the early 2000s. Both those albums, Quixotic and Night On My Side, were a complete treat. Having heard several tracks on Jools Holland recently, The Blue God isn't as hot. Hayes' form since her debut has been patchy too, but I haven't heard The Hollow Of Morning.

Finally, amongst the featued releases are three diverse albums from three diverse artists. Adem presents an album of covers as his third LP, featuring tracks by artists who inspired the Fridge bassist. The Black Angels' second LP, Directions To See A Ghost is an unexpected treat. Picking up good reviews in most places is The Shortwave Set's Replica Sun Machine, so that finds it's way into this list.

Also out this week are the following: Duels - The Barbarians Move In, Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours, Wiley - Grime Wave, Drive By Argument - S/T, Matmos - Supreme Balloon, Shout Out Louds - Our Ill Wills, Stapleton - Rest And Be Thankful. Truly a bumper week.

To Shades - Colours For Cajuan

To Shades - Uppercuts (Wednesday Mix)

Martina Topley-Bird - Poison (Van She Mix)

DJ Disciple - Work It Out (2008 Klaas Remix)

Danger Mouse is a busy man. He's just released a new Gnarls Barkley album (which I've yet to hear) and in the last couple of weeks I've been sent a couple of things which he has been responsible production-wise, namely some new stuff by Martina Topley Bird and now new tunes by The Shortwave Set. This is a pretty cracking pop song from their forthcoming album, 'Replica Sun Machine' which they recorded in Los Angeles with Danger Mouse. The b-side on the single, 'White Lies' is pretty great too so it all bodes well for the lp.

The video for 'No Social' is credited as some polish animation they cut to their song but it works really well and totally deserves to be the official video if it is not already (I'm not quite sure what they mean). Have a look for yourself.
