The bus ride back from Mendoza was very tranquil and uneventful. I went to sleep as soon as they were done serving dinner to try to get the most sleep possible. I ended up getting about 9 hours in total, which is for sure the most I’ve had at any point during the trip. After we got into the bus station we tried to take the subway back to Jessi’s homestay because she was moving out of her horrible homestay and into mine! Unfortunately, the subway line we needed was closed down due to some sort of imechanical problem. So, we had to take the train back to my homestay. It was a little bit out of the way, but this way we dropped of the luggage we had with us and thus didn’t have to carry so much from Jessi’s homestay. I went with to help her move and we were done in about an hour. Afterwards we both showered, ate a real breakfast (since the one of the bus was grossly inadequate) and got ready to go to the fair. We had made plans to go to a weekly fair that takes place closer to the city limits in an area called Mataderos. This fair is less touristy than the others because it is a lot harder to get there. You have to know what bus to take; which is nearly impossible unless somebody gives you specific instructions. Luckily one of my roommates who had just left had filled me in the week before. So, at about 1:00 we headed to the main drag about a block away to take the bus. Unfortunately, my roommate wasn’t very specific and hadn’t said which direction to take the bus. This is something I should have asked. We ended up taking the bus the wrong way and went about 10 blocks out of the way. The end of the line occurred not 5 minutes after we got on and we had to get off and pay again to get back on. Next, we rode the bus for about an hour until we arrived at Mataderos. By this time we were starving so we set off to find somewhere to eat. We wandered into a restaurant with a sign out front advertising a folk music show. A waiter showed us to a seat but we couldn’t hear anything because the music was so loud. Somehow we managed to order platter of grilled meat for 2 and a salad although there was no menu (something that should have been a sign to us!) We waited a long time for our food. While we were waiting we watched another person who looked lost wander in. We laughed and joked that he must also be a foreigner; surprisingly the waiter sat him with us since he was by himself. It was a lucky decision for him since he didn’t speak any Spanish. Turns out he was from Australia and we tried to talk some; but the music was so loud that we failed miserably. When it came time to pay we were really angry because the waiter tried to rip us off. We tried to remedy the situation; but we still ended up paying almost 100 pesos for lunch for both of us. We were still angry when we left which is ironic because this meal was a feast and we still only paid $15 dollars a piece. We spent the rest of the day walking through the fair and riding the bus back home. Overall, it was a good way to experience a different side of Buenos Aires and to remind us just how big the city is. It is easy to forget since we spend all of our time in a relatively small zone that makes up our neighborhood and downtown.

Hago un paréntesis en el abandono del blog porque la ocasión lo requiere.
La organización por los derechos de los animales Igualdad Animal ha recopilado recientemente documentos gráficos acerca de la masacre que se lleva a cabo todos los días en mataderos españoles. Dichos documentos verán la luz en el documental MATADEROS, recomendable para todas aquellas personas que de verdad quieran saber de que se están alimentando; de como se obtiene el cadavérico producto que ingerimos sin ser capaces de cuestionarnos cuanto de ético hay en cada bocado. Sin ser capaces de cuestionarnos a nosotros mismos y darnos cuenta de que ni un sabor determinado ni una falsa comodidad a la hora de vestir merecen el sacrificio de vidas sensibles e inocentes.

[Nueva York, Estados Unidos] [El diez de abril de 1866 se celebró la fundación de la Sociedad Americana para la Prevención de la Crueldad hacia los Animales, ASPCA]. Lo recordó History:

El 10 de Abril de 1866 el Diplomático y Filántropo Henry Bergh, 54, fundó en la Ciudad de Nueva York la Sociedad Americana para la Prevención de la Crueldad hacia los Animales [American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, ASPCA].
En 1863 Bergh fue nombrado por el presidente Abraham Lincoln a un cargo diplomático en la corte rusa del zar Alejandro II. Fue allá donde le causó horror presenciar cómo los campesinos golpeaban a los caballos de trabajo. De regreso a Estados Unidos en junio de 1865, una visita a la Real Sociedad para la Prevención de la Crueldad contra los Animales en Londres consolidó su determinación a introducir un estatuto que no sólo inaugurara la ASPCA, sino también tuviera el poder de arrestar y procesar a los infractores de la ley.
De retorno en Nueva York, Bergh alegó a favor de "esos sirvientes mudos de la humanidad' en una reunión en Clinton Hall el 8 de febrero de 1866. Argumentó que la protección de los animales era un tema que cruzaba todas las líneas de partido y de clase. "Este es un asunto de conciencia; no tiene aspectos secundarios extraños", dijo. "Es una cuestión moral en todos sus aspectos". El discurso provocó que un número de dignatarios firmaran su ‘Declaración de los Derechos de los Animales'.
El diez de abril de 1866 el apasionado informe de Bergh sobre los horrores infligidos a los animales convenció a la legislatura del estado de Nueva York para aprobar el estatuto fundando la ASPCA . Nueve días después se aprobó la primera ley efectiva contra la crueldad en Estados Unidos, permitiendo que la ASPCA investigara las denuncias de crueldad animales y dotándola de autoridad para efectuar detenciones.
Bergh fue un activo reformador, y se convirtió en una presencia habitual en las calles y en los tribunales de Nueva York. Inspeccionaba regularmente los mataderos, trabajaba con la policía para clausurar garitos de peleas de perros y ratas y dictaba charlas en escuelas y en sociedades de adultos. En 1867 la ASPCA fundó y gestionó las primeras ambulancias para caballos.
Como pionero e innovador del movimiento humanitario, la ASPCA se convirtió rápidamente en el modelo de más de otros veinticinco organizaciones humanitarias en Estados Unidos y Canadá. Y para cuando Bergh murió en 1888, 37 de los 38 estados de la Unión de entonces habían aprobado leyes contra la crueldad.
Los dramáticos rescates de Bergh de caballos y ganado maltratados sirvieron como modelo para los que trataron de proteger a los niños contra los abusos. Después de que Mary Ellen McCormack, 9, fuera encontrado amarrada a una cama y golpeado brutalmente por sus padres adoptivos en 1874, un grupo de activistas fundó la Sociedad de Nueva York para la Prevención de la Crueldad hacia los Niños. Bergh fue uno de los primeros vicepresidentes de la organización.

Primer Post

Bueno, este es el primer post. Este blog no reemplaza ni al foro, ni al blog oficial http://www.fednuevachicago.zxq.net, sino que es una herramienta nueva que construímos como parte de nuestro crecimiento.

El objetivo es lograr mayor participación entre los integrantes de la Federación, y además continuar agrandando la familia verde y negra dentro del ManagerZone.
Una de las ideas principales es que desde aquí se puedan obtener consejos sobre el juego, informarse acerca de las últimas noticias, programar encuentros de una manera más organizada, y enterarnos rápidamente de las últimas actividades a realizarse.

Están todos invitados a participar.

Durante varias semanas, un activista del Equipo de Investigaciones de Igualdad Animal se introdujo en varios mataderos de España para ser testigo y poder documentar lo que sucedía tras sus muros, demostrando así que España no es diferente en este aspecto a los mataderos de Estados Unidos cuyas imágenes han salido recientemente a la luz pública y que tras la polémica y revuelo social, han llevado a la mayor retirada de carne de la historia de ese país.

Os he hablado muchas veces del documental Earthlings, que narra lo que ocurre tras las paredes de los mataderos.

Vuestra excusa es que eso para en EEUU. Pues bien, llega "Mataderos" un documental que narra lo que pasa en los mataderos de España. Exactamente lo mismo. Ahora si que ya no tenéis excusa para seguir pagando por esto.

"MATADEROS es un reportaje pionero en España que cuenta con más de 300 fotografías en alta resolución y varios vídeos que nos muestran imágenes inéditas hasta el momento, algunas de ellas obtenidas con cámara oculta, de los lugares donde millones de animales son matados cada año."

Ten Things to Do in Buenos Aires

I've been living here for just over a year and have had lots of visitors of all sorts--those who love museums, those who love wine, those who just want to know what it's like to live in Buenos Aires, those who want to shop, and those who love music. Here are ten things I would do with any of these visitors. There are, of course, hundreds of things to do in Buenos Aires, but these ten would give you a pretty good idea of the diversity of this amazing city.

San Telmo Antique Fair - On Sundays, San Telmo fills up with tourists and locals and vendors galore. The fair has grown in recent years so you’ll find much more than antiques, but in Plaza Dorrego it’s antiques only. The collections are fascinating. If the crowd starts to get to you, head off of Defensa (the main street through San Telmo) to Peru or Balcarce. Balcarce is a small street with some of the best preserved San Telmo architecture. Peru is more busy but there are several good cafes and bars where you can hide out until you’re ready to fight the crowds again. Whatever you do, don’t miss the old-fashioned market in San Telmo. it’s between Carlos Calvo and Estados Unidos just off of Defensa.
Tango at Confiteria Ideal (on Thursday for the orchestra) - My favorite tango experience because I don’t dance. If you’re a tango dancer, you’ll want to go elsewhere. But if you want to watch others dance and hear a live orchestra all set in a ballroom of faded decadence, Ideal is the place to go on a Thursday night when the live orchestra plays. Get there early enough to get a good seat (say 10:00 pm) or call to make a reservation. They’ll go all night.
Cafe Tortoni (but not to eat) - Ok, so the food leaves a lot to be desired and in a city like Buenos Aires, there’s no sense eating mediocre food. But do go there for a coffee or a refreshing drink while you’re out and about in the downtown area. Cafe Tortoni takes you back in time. You’ll see tons of tourists taking pictures (inside and out), you may have to wait outside for table to free up (but not usually a long wait), and the wait staff is, well, rude. But once you get past that part, linger at your table as long as you like to watch the comings and goings and imagine you’re visiting Buenos Aires 100 years ago.
Recoleta Cemetery and Avenida Alvear (visit the fancy hotels) - Obviously you have to visit the cemetery. It reminds me of cemeteries in New Orleans. Little cities of elegance and history. But you should also stroll down the street Alvear to see the mega-fashion houses (Gucci, Armani, the like), and to visit two hotels: Alvear Palace Hotel and the Park Hyatt. Alvear Palace Hotel is old-fashioned elegance while Park Hyatt is modern perfection.
Milion (cocktails and appetizers with the hip crowd) - On Parana (1048 just off of Avenida Santa Fe), this is the place to go for cocktails. The attraction isn’t the cocktails themselves, it’s the restored mansion that houses Milion. Sit down and imagine what it must have been like to live in such a place. Such elegance. The garden is stunning. The staircase to the garden is also, and it’s a good place to sit to have a drink if you happen to go when there are no tables available. Divine experience all around.
Palermo Soho (shopping and eating) - On Saturdays and Sundays, there’s a fair in Plaza Serrano. It’s not a great fair, but it brings a lot of people to the area. Most of the restaurants here are exceptional so you’ll want to have lunch or dinner. This is the part of town that has the most interesting shops. Local clothes designers, fantastic paper stores, interesting home decor designs, unique and affordable jewelry and shoes. Any day of the week it’s interesting, but it’s most lively on weekends.
La Peña del Colorado (folclore and food) - I love Argentine folclore (a type of music more popular in the Interior than in Buenos Aires). It’s boisterous, rhythmic, and reminds me of bluegrass and country music from back home. Located in Barrio Norte on Guemes (3657), this place makes me feel like I’m in Cordoba or Santiago del Estero, eating meat and french fries on wooden tables surrounded by people I don’t know and listening to a live show of chacarera or zamba. The show at La Peña del Colorado starts early for Buenos Aires (9:30), so get there even earlier to be sure you get a seat. But stay later. Once the show is over, groups sitting at tables throughout the restaurant will start up their own juntadas (a gathering of people to drink and sing). While you’re there, you might want to try some mate (the haylike infusion Argentines drink out of a gourd). Add sugar if it’s too bitter for your taste.
El Ateneo (most beautiful bookstore ever) - On Avenida Santa Fe near Callao and Riobamba, this is the most beautiful bookstore I’ve ever seen. El Ateneo is housed inside an old theater. There’s a cafe on what was the stage, you can sit in the balconies to read for a spell, or you can just wander around and look at the amazing lighting and architecture.
Tigre (a bit of nature and more shopping) - Go on a Saturday so that you can head to Mataderos, Soho or San Telmo on Sunday. Why I like this trip? The train ride is great. It takes you along the coast (although you don’t see the river) up through the northern suburbs of Buenos Aires. You might even want to get off the train and see San Isidro if you have time. It’s a gorgeous suburb, hilly, green and with spectacular views of the kite surfers down on the river. Tigre itself can take the full day, so head out early. Stop by the tourist information office near the McDonalds. They’ll give you information about boat rides you can take through the river and to visit the islands if you want to get off the boat and walk around. You can also rent bicycles or canoes. Then save enough time to head over to the port and the Fruit Market. There’s much more than fruit. See Gift-Buying in Tigre for more information. And if you do go on a Sunday, buy a roundtrip so you don’t have to wait in the lines to get your return ticket.
Mataderos (folclore, meat, gauchos, and shopping) - Mataderos is a barrio in the west of Buenos Aires. It’s a hike, but it’s worth it. In summer, they move the fair to Saturday evenings, but during the rest of the year it’s my favorite activity on a Sunday. The fair itself is interesting and prices are about 1/3 cheaper than in the center. But it’s the live music and dancing that I like. There’s a huge stage in the main square with one performance after another of Argentine folclore. Couples dressed in traditional clothes dance in front of the stage. Grills serving up choripan (Argentinean hotdogs that are way better than hotdogs) or grilled meat of just about any kind encircle the dancers and musicians. And in the afternoon (usually at about 2:00 pm) there’s a gaucho show on the same street as the stage just after the last stands. Young and old gauchos ride their horses under an arch trying to pull off a ring with a small stick. Talk about horsemanship.

Que hacer un domingo en Buenos Aires ? Les tengo la respuesta : ir a la Feria de Mataderos. Si quieren pasar una tarde agradable con musica folclorica, espectaculo de gauchos, artesanias por doquier y una buena comida ... tomense un colectivo y pasaran un dia muy agradable. Y para los que ya piensan en comprar los regalos de Navidad, encontraran mil ideas.

Nuestro accidente de cada día: varios heridos en Mataderos

Fue en el cruce de la Avenida Lisandro de la Torrre y Bragado, un punto neurálgico de Mataderos. Por el accidente, protagonizado por una formación de la línea 63, se registraron lesionados

Esta mañana, poco antes de las 10, un colectivo de la línea 63 embistió a un vehículo particular en el barrio porteño de Mataderos. El accidente se registró en el cruce de la Avenida Lisandro de la Torre y Bragado.

Como consecuencia del choque cinco personas resultaron heridas, por lo que fueron derivadas al Hospital Santojanni, para su atención.

Dos ambulancias del SAME estuvieron presentes en el lugar para asistir a los lesionados. Además, efectivos policiales intentaban, esta mañana, establecer las causas del accidente.
