Em seu primeiro e único longa, Jonas Akerlund utilizou os mesmo recursos que o fizeram famoso na produção de vídeos-clipe, cenas rápidas com cortes secos, efeitos de passagem alucinantes, tomadas estranhas e uma câmera que não para quieta. "Spun" lembra muitas vezes um clipe feito por Akerlund, "Smack my Bitch Up" do Prodigy.

As conexões com a música não param por ai, Jonas Akerlund é ex-baterista do Bathory (se você não sabe o que é Bathory morra procure no Google), em uma cena o personagem Frisbee assiste o clipe de Mother North do Satyricon (esse se você não souber quem é, morra de vez procure no Google de novo), uma pichação na casa de Spider Mike é o nome da banda de Jason Schwartzman, o Phantom Planet e tem as participações especiais de Rob Halford (morra empalado se não souber quem é) e Billy Corgan.

A idéia original de "Spun" era ser um documentário sobre metanfetaminas, mas foi ganhando tanto conteúdo que o filme original tem mais de três horas de duração e bateu um recorde do Guiness (isso é verdade) com mais de 5000 edições. O roteiro foi escrito com base em entrevistas feitas com usuários de drogas e com pessoas que produziam as drogas, mas a idéia central veio de uma experiência de Will de Los Santos, um dos roteiristas do filme, que em 1995 serviu de motorista para um "cooker".

O filme começa com Ross (Jason Schwartzman), um viciadão em metanfetaminas chegando na casa de Spider Mike (John Leguizamo), um traficante pra lá de doidasso. Na casa estão Nikki (Brittany Murphy), Frisbee (Patrick Fugit) e Cookie (Mena Suvari), todos muito chapados. Ross veio para comprar uma "porcaria", mas Spider Mike teve a capacidade de perder o material e está transtornado por isso. Nikki é namorada de The Cook (Mickey Rourke), o cara que produz a "porcaria" e convence Ross a levá-la até aonde o produtor está em troca de algumas "porcarias". Depois de 12 minutos de cenas rápidas, cortes secos e efeitos para simular as viagens que um drogado tem, o filme apresenta seus créditos iniciais.

Levando Nikki em casa, Ross consegue o "emprego" de motorista de The Cook, o trabalho é simples, ele fica a disposição do cara para levá-lo aonde precisar e em troca ganha mais "porcarias". Durante três dias, Ross leva o cachorro verde de Nikki ao veterinário, leva The Cook para comprar mais material e quando acidentalmente a pequena fábrica de The Cook explode, ele leva o patrão para buscar mais dinheiro com Salvatore Maroni The Man (Eric Roberts). Obviamente tem mais coisas no filme, coisas sem sentido, como Spider Mike no disk sexo, o programa de policiais, Cookie no banheiro, The Cook e Ross na locadora de filme pornô e a "comovente" história da infância de The Cook.

Os efeitos criados para simular os efeitos das drogas são excelentes e engraçados pra caramba, com o uso de muitas cores, cenas que duram dois segundos, cortes secos seguidos e uso de animações bizarras. As comparações a "Requiem For a Dream" e a "Trainspotting" são normais, "Spun" não tem o apelo dramático do primeiro, mas em compensação é mais pirado que"Trainspotting" . Uma referência a "Requiem For a Dream" é quando The Cook compra um filme pornô chamado "Rectum for a Dream".

"Spun" é um excelente filme, bem pirado e muito bem realizado, presta bastante.

Aunque obviamente Miuccia Prada no desfile en Nueva York (y menos mal, porque si lo hiciera sería muy mala señal), ella y sus aires de mamma siciliana siempre están presentes cuando se trata de moda, y qué mejor que hacerse notar organizando una fiesta en su megastore del Soho e invitar a más de 1500 personas.



Cuando los americanos oyen Prada, allá van, y allí fueron porque el evento, que en realidad no consistía en una fiesta por festejar sino en el visionado de un corto que ha elaborada la diseñadora italiana en colaboración con un director llamado James Lima y que se titula Fallen Shadows, fue todo un éxito y logró reunir a miembros de la alta sociedad, periodistas, cantantes, actrices, y sobre todo, modelos.

Aunque estoy segura de que la mitad de ellos estaban de espaldas a la gran pantalla cuando se proyectó...

Claire Danes, que acudía con su excelsísimo novio (es guapísimo), el también actor Hugh Dancy, no quiso perderse la fiesta, así como no quiso tampoco hacerlo su compañera del gremio, Jessica Alba, ambas, coincidían también horas antes en las primeras filas de la presentación de Narciso Rodríguez.

La representación de actrices fue escasa pero suficiente ya que allí estaba también una estrafalaria Mena Suvari.

Y una deliciosa Zoe Saldana enfundada en un escueto vestido de punto color nude y cuello cisne, de la marca, de su colección de invierno 2008/2009, que prueba que el menos, siempre es más.

Leighton Meester no podía faltar a la cita y se posaba así de espléndida en el photo call, con un mono de seda color champán y unas bonitas sandalias embellecidas con piedras.

Lou Doillon puso el refinamiento europeo y el chic parisino con su presencia; esta chica, me encanta, pero esta vez le rindió homenaje a la opulencia italiana (nada que ver con Prada de todas maneras) con su abrigo de leopardo sobre mini vestido negro.

Heather Graham, la última de las actrices en plantilla, vestía tambien un little black dress (de Chanel), color que rompía con una maxi cartera de mano de rafia, en rosa empolvado.

A partir de aquí, ya todo son modelos, y empiezo por la holandesa Doutzen Kroes, recién bajada de la pasarela, que elegía también un tono empolvado para su vestido.

La inglesa Jacquetta Wheeler (era una de mis preferidas) muy étnica, con medias, y cero Prada.

La rusa Sasha Pivovarova caía sin embargo rendida a los pies de la anfitriona y le rendía homenaje con un total look de este invierno.

Jessica Stam seguía su línea pero se decantaba por una falda tobillera de encaje que combinaba con una sencilla camiseta y un mini chaqueta, haciendo de un look a priori imposible, algo totalmente ponible. Iba acompañada por una Harley Viera-Newton , una niña trendsetter de Los ángeles y del círculo de amigos de Cory Kennedy, de la que algún día os hablaré.

Y hablando de Cory: eccola qua. Con Peaches Geldof. Y destrozando una sobrefalda de tul de la firma italiana que llevaba encima unas bermudas de cuadros y una camiseta roñosa. Un despropósito. No entiendo como la dejaron entrar.

This is a sex scene from Mena Suvari's new movie Stuck, which is coming out on DVD on October 14th in the States.

In the scene, Mena Suvari suddenly starts to scream as she flashes back to a car accident significant to the storyline as some dude is shtomping her.

Now, maybe I missed something but wasn't Mena Suvari considered a great actress a few years back? Because her work here makes Paris Hilton's look like Oscar-winning material, and no, I'm not joking.

The obvious clunker was directed by Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator) and also stars respectable actor Irish actor Stephen Rea (The Reaping). It surprisingly holds a very good score on IMDB, but expect that to drop significantly once the DVD is released and more people get to see it.

The beginning was engaging because it was actually terrifying: a city gone crazy because of some mysterious signal eminating from telephones, television, and radio without any means of escape. I felt like I was right there with the heroine when everyone started to kill each other. However, after thirty minutes, it quickly went downhill because it couldn't find its footing regarding its tone. The middle portion was labyrinthine because of two things: the violence being used as a form of amusement and the way that the filmmakers would play with the audiences' perception. Regarding the former, I'm a fan of dark humour but this film had gone too far. At first it was funny but it quickly became downright degrading and borderline torture porn. If they had stayed with minimal violence and blood just for laughs (about five to ten minutes), it would have been okay. As for the latter, I don't think it's a good idea to explicitly trick the audience again and again and again because they eventually feel cheated and give up trying to put everything together. This is completely different from twist endings because twist endings involve one complete pay-off. Tricks, on the other hand, is presenting something false as real and switching them around miltiple times until the audiences get sick of it because it's so confusing. Unfortunately, this movie is a big example of the latter and it just fell apart. It's too bad because it has such a great premise. Instead of going straight for the horror, it delved into comedy. Instead of making the whole apocalypse as a global issue, it chose to be more personal and claustrophobic. I cannot recommend this to anyone because it is incredibly frustrating to watch.

American Beauty

I understand why some people could be a bit put off by this film. At first glance, it may seem like nothing much happens, but when one really looks into it, it's like watching the inside mechanisms of a volcano about to erupt and causing unimaginable destruction. This definitely reminded me of "Desperate Housewives" in its finest dark humour. When characters are miserable, it's so funny because of the way they react to the seemingly smallest disturbances of their perfect lives. Kevin Spacey is incendiary in this film because he's able to capture a suburban father who is sick of his family and his own self-image. Annette Bening is so entertaining to watch, especially during her freak-outs (which ironically are her most human scenes) when things do not go the way she expects them to. Thora Birch, Wes Bentley, and Mena Suvari did exceptional work as teenagers on the borderline of rebellion; they hide behind physical beauty, art, or yearning for acceptance. I love the ongoing theme of outside appearances because it's so applicable to our every day lives. The film takes note that point of view is crucial, especially if one sees or hears something on the outside, without fully examining the inner workings. This theme happens with the characters' inner thoughts and observable actions... which could also be seen inside and outside the home. This film is extremely multi-layered and will definitely reward those who are willing to watch more than once.

One Missed Call (2008)

This was really hard to sit through because nothing made sense. I rarely say that about movies but this one felt like it was filmed for three days. I felt like the filmmakers didn't even try to make a good movie. The visual effects were corny, the thrills were not present, and the characters were thick. The film immediately jumped to the scares, which was not an effective move because the audiences were not yet invested in the characters. In order words, it was hard to care. I usually like Shannyn Sossamon but even she couldn't carry this picture. I keep picking my brain to come up with one good thing about the movie but I can't recall one. I was bored from beginning to end; half-way through, I wanted to do something else (and I did while the movie was on). I just wish that Americans would stop remaking Japanese horror movies and come up with their own. This is really an embarrassment of the horror genre. I want to forget about it, but so darn bad. Stay away from this picture as far as you possibly can. It's a waste of time.

Prinze Jr plays a college kid torn between his roots and his aspirations. Scott Caan, on form in yet another hoodlum turn, and Entourage's Turtle (Jerry Ferrera) play his childhood pals. It’s your typical drama about three very different young men who come to a turning point.

Harbouring water polo dreams, Michael (Prinze Jr) tells us in voiceover that he wants to leave Brooklyn behind, that he doesn't have much of a conscience, and feels he’d be well-suited to be a lawyer. That he takes this path is an amusing footnote and little more.

There was the potential here to create a complex amoral character along the lines of Aaron Eckhart in Thank You For Smoking, but Prinze Jr is simply miscast. At the beginning Michael describes himself in such a way you expect him to have an edge, but nothing in Prinze Jr's performance conveys any complexity. The fresh-faced 31-year-old is too bland to make the most of this role, however Caan is much more engaging as a vain badboy.

Decent looking, watchable but forgettable, Prinze pretty much defines the film. A throwaway star for a throwaway film. While he may be a poor man's Paul Walker (that’s a cruel thing to say I know) he's not terrible and this is a decent B-movie, although the similar 10th & Wolf was much better.

Costarring the not-too-choosy Mena Suvari (soon to be seen in the maligned Day of the Dead remake) as the love interest and Alec Baldwin as the obligatory menacing wiseguy, Brooklyn Rules is only worth a look if you're a fan of the genre or among the Scooby Doo star's fan club.      Richard Hawes

So apparently the Limelight Paris-New York Collection party was last night and there were bunches of celebrities there.  Apparently it was also a get together for the What Have You Been In LATELY Club, with president Mena Suvari presiding.  Vice President Liv Tyler was also present, and let's not forget Secretary Emmy Rossum.  It's not like I have anything AGAINST these girls personally, but if you're not going to come out of hiding very often, maybe wear something a bit less ugly when you do?  Hey, don't blame me.  See for yourselves:

I understand that Liv Tyler, being tall and all model-y looking can't help her big feet, in the same way that Mena Suvari can't very well lop off the top third of that fivehead.  We all have our thing (I'm a bit self-conscious about my tail.  Does it make me look fat?)  But you learn what that thing is and you WORK with it!  Liv might want to get on friendly terms with some strappy slingbacks, which would downplay her wafflestompers while showing off her go-go-gadget legs.  Now Mena doesn't have as many options, especially since that thing's on her face.  For starters though she could, oh, I don't know, NOT wear her hair poofy on top which makes her forehead appear to be even larger!!!  Who told her that looked cute?  Seriously, she'd make a real estate mogul salivate with all that acreage.
