Children of Men. (2006)

I remember seeing the trailer for this and hearing the line "Because since women stopped being able to have babies, what's the point?", and thinking "Wow. Lame." Suffice it to say I was incredibly wrong and ended up seeing this movie four times in theaters.

Yeah the science doesn't make much sense. But who cares? I remember downloading this movie (because I couldn't catch it in theaters) and watching it for a week straight.

Cloverfield. (2008)

I loved it. Everyone else I saw it with hated it. I remember leaving the theater and not being able to say anything about it because I didn't want to get in a pissing contest with my friends. But, if you read my review, you can tell how much I enjoyed it. Read it here!

This is actually a default choice. I'm not big on SciFi and I had to choose five. The scene of London's streets left abandoned and desolate was awesome enough to get it on the list.

The Fountain. (2006)

I saw this on opening day (November 22) in 2006 with my buddy James from the Move It Move It staff. Right when the credits appeared on the screen, some bitch ass fucking sorority chick in front of us let out a "Um... okayyyyy?" Dumb hoe. The rest of the crowd also left the theater either making beatbox sounds with their mouths or in a dumbstruck silence. Anyway, I walked outside to discover that my vehicle had been broken into and my CD player was stolen. Instead of bitching and crying about it, much to James' surprise, I continued to talk about how amazing The Fountain was.

I'm confused. From what I understand, there is no mummy in this movie, only Brendan Fraser. I understand that they want to keep the name to ensure that people will actually watch this sequel but there is no mummy even though they keep repeating "mummy." Instead, there is an army of clay pot soldiers lead by Jet Li. I don't understand why that strikes fear in people...it's clay. Cookie jars are made from the same stuff.

For the title alone. It's like a celebration of the integration of two cultures.

Before the previews started, the screen was blank and there was no sound. I liked that. Not that I go to movies often, but I wish when I did, I weren't being deluged with ads, inane movie trivia, and "behind the scenes featurettes" (longer ads) until the previews started. Strangely, though, this one also came without any sort of "Please turn your cell phones off and keep your mouth shut" sort of message before the previews or the movie. I was pretty certain those came standard.

Instead of ads, I got to listen to two guys a few rows behind me talking about movie musicals. And then, of course, there were previews. The two main things I took away from those were these:

1. There is to be a 4th Terminator movie, and little could be gleaned about it except that it appears Christian Bale is John Connor. This is, people, a good thing. Christian Bale has made roles work that really had no business working at all (see Equilibrium). He can be an action star, but his characters aren't all identical, and he can pick his movies. Plus the guy can seriously act for real: take a watch of The Machinist if you don't believe me. Now, this new Terminator... I wonder if it'll be tied into the Sarah Connor Chronicles TV show. That show... I watched the season, and I thought it... well, it's trying to be well-written, thought-out, quality sci-fi. Not always succeeding, but definitely in the "A for Effort" category. One particular reason I hope the movie's tied to the show is that the show has made the good decision to ignore Terminator 3 and pretend it never happened. Since that movie turned into self-parody so very, very quickly, I'd say ignoring it is in the best interests of the franchise.

There is to be another Mummy movie. I only ever saw the first one. Not real excited about it... except it kinda piques my interest just because it has the ever-watchable Michelle Yeoh. I realize her martial arts credentials are strictly limited to what's been choreographed for her movies, though that's not peculiar: many stars have likewise simply been dancers and stunt performers rather than actual martial artists in the Bruce Lee/Dolph Lundgren vein. Nonetheless, the woman portrays dignity incredibly well, and I maintain that she totally out-sexied Zhang Ziyi in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - in part because of that dignity and gravitas she brings to her roles.

"n't." yeah, there's an audible syllable. there aren't even any vowels. which, some would argue, is the point of contractions in the first place. eliminating pesky clarity-giving syllables by smooshing all the consonants together.

so, for anyone who's ever had to ask people to repeat themselves over and over because you couldn't hear the difference between did and didn't, or could and couldn't, or can and can't.............. i feel ya.

in other random thoughts, i have a massive woman-crush on michelle yeoh. amazing actor. and, dude, the woman does her own stunts (and has suffered many an injury from it). damn...

Clone Wars - Release Date: Aug 15, 2008
This is an animated movie which is apparently the beginning of a new series on Cartoon Network in the fall. Now it makes sense. Watching the trailer for it I kept asking myself, "what the hell is the point of this?" Lucas lost me with how he handled the latest Star Wars trilogy, so this isn't my bag, but for those who are more die-hard Star Wars fans, this could be pretty cool... Quarantine - Release Date: Oct 10, 2008
This looked pretty scary. My hubs actually said, "All right!" when it was done - but he loves the horror. lol... Quarantine follows a local news crew, who's assignment is to spend the night at a firehouse, when they go along for a 911 call to an apartment building. They get there and hear blood-curdling screams and find a woman who's been 'infected' by some unknown illness. The building is locked up and put under quarantine, leaving the news crew and journalist inside. When all is said and done, the only evidence of what happened inside is the film crew's video tapes. This one might be too scary for me [because I'm a wimp], but it looks pretty decent for horror fans. It reminded me a little of Resident Evil, on a much smaller scale. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor - Release Date: Aug 1, 2008
The Mummy movies aren't for everyone. They're goofy, but we love them, and this next one looks really good. The fact that Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh are in it gives it a credibility it may not have had before. My only concern is Maria Bello replacing Rachael Weisz's 'Edie'... The story picks up 10 years later in the far East as the O'Connell boys - Rick, and son Alex - "unearth the mummy of the first Emperor of Qin - a shape-shifting entity cursed by a wizard centuries ago" according to IMDb. Death Race - Release Date: Aug 22, 2008
We're Jason Statham fans, so I'm pretty sure we'll go to see Death Race. It's your basic violent action flick with hotties and fast cars. I'm surprised to see the likes of Joan Allen in this type of movie - it makes me wonder if there's more to it than a just a shadey revenge story. Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, the guy behind all the Resident Evil movies, Death Race is the story of Ex-con Jensen Ames [Statham] and how he ends up in jail, forced by the warden [Joan Allen] to drive in a televised death race that takes place over 3 days, as participating inmates brutalize and kill one another. The winner is the last man standing at the end, and he gets his freedom back. The whole thing takes place in the not-too-distant future, so it has a bit of a Mad Max feel to it. Nel cast Cliff Curtis (spesso in parti da latino-americano come in "Traffic"), Cillian Murphy (lo Scarecrow di "Batman begins"), Michelle Yeoh e Chris Evans (la Torcia/Johnny Storm dei Fantastici 4).

Il viaggio verso il sole segue quello finito misteriosamente dalla Icarus One e sembra procedere tranquillo proprio fino a quando l'equipaggio "ascolta" un segnale radio di s.o.s. proveniente forse dalla prima navicella scomparsa. La deviazione della rotta comporta qualche problema e l'innescarsi di una serie di eventi imprevisti.
L'atmosfera richiama alla memoria in parte l' "Odissea" di Kubrick mentre la claustrofobica silenziosità della Icarus rammenta "Alien". Tralasciando l'aspetto verosimile della vicenda è un film ben costruito e con effetti degni di nota. Tutti gli attori svolgono il proprio ruolo senza picchi di eccezionalità ma rendono il racconto plausibile e la psicologia dei personaggi non è proposta superficialmente.
Il finale non è banale (anche se non propriamente una sorpresa visto l'andazzo del film).
Un film poco noto ma che si fa vedere.
Una curiosità: l'attore (Mark Strong) che interpreta il capitano della Icarus 1 Pinbacker ha recitato in un altro "Sunshine" nel 1999 (un film che non c'entra nulla con questo).

Como que está de moda ahora sacar trailers internacionales con otros idiomas al inglés, pasó con el trailer en español de Bangkok Dangerous y con los trailers en ruso de Wanted. Ahora el segundo trailer de Babylon A.D., dirigida por Mathieu Kassovitz y protagonizada por Vin Diesel, Michelle Yeoh, Gérard Depardieu, Mélanie Thierry, Charlotte Rampling, Lambert Wilson y Mark Strong, aparece en francés y en un idioma que no detectó al principio del mismo... será francés? No, no puede ser. Aunque me parece que dicen "une fille...", asi como "una niña... bla bla bla". En fin, el trailer 2 mantiene el mismo espiritu del primero, mostrar poco, muchos cortes, mucho caos, se repite el mix entre Blade Runner y Children of Men y sería... por lo menos a mi me llama la atención e independiente que el protagonista sea Vin Diesel, creo que esta puede ser una película entretenida. Pero bueno, me he equivocado anteriormente.

The Dark Knight

OK, first thing's first. I love this title. There's no 'II' or '2', there's not even 'Batman' in the title. But it's so simple, it's awesome. I really hope they call the follow-up to Superman Returns simply The Man Of Steel, just because it sounds epic without having too many words. I personally like titles that are maybe one or two words (Armageddon, Star Wars, Ran, and the list goes on).

Batman Begins was a prime example of how to jump start a dying movie franchise. Christopher Nolan, Christian Bale, and Co. made Batman's world believable, giving us a practically brand new series. You'd almost forget that there have been other Batman movies before this one.



Mongol

This German-produced film chronicles the life of Genghis Khan, from slave to conqueror. This film was up for an Oscar earlier this year, but has yet to be released in the States. It receives a limited theatrical run June 6.



Kung-Fu Panda

I'm a sucker for animated films, and this one looks great. Stupid, probably, but funny nonetheless. Pixar still reigns as king of the CG animated movie, but this Paramount release looks like it could be a lot of fun. Watch the first teaser that was released and the newest trailer and try not to laugh. If you don't, then you have no soul. Just kidding.



The Happening

I love M. Night Shyamalan. I know that people hate him, but I'm one of those that think he is a great writing and directing talent. Even his weaker movies (Lady in the Water) I still enjoy. This one isn't peaking my interest as much as something like The Village did, but I like the premise (strange occurrence causing people to basically lose certain motor skills). I also am a big enough Mark Wahlberg fan that I would have seen this without the Shyamalan name stuck to it. While I'm not a big Zooey Deschanel fan, I'm sure I won't find her annoying here (actually, bland is more the term).



Get Smart

Those two words are all you need. I was a kid when I caught the reruns of this show on Nick-at-Nite, and have been a fan ever since. Steve Carell is one of the funniest men in Hollywood, and having him paired with the Anne Hathaway (looking hotter than ever) and The Rock is just a casting dream come true.



Wall-E

C'mon. It's Pixar. I haven't seen a bad Pixar movie yet (granted I haven't seen all of them, still have yet to see Cars). It may also be interesting to see how they can pull off a story with all the classic Pixar charm when the main character barely even talks. Then again, watch the short film Lifted (found on either the Pixar short films collection DVD or the Ratatouille DVD); it's basically a complete story told in about 5 minutes, with no dialogue.



Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D

I'm more interested in the 3D than the movie itself, but the movie could still be a lot of fun. And Brendan Fraser is one of my 'guilty pleasure' actors.



Hellboy II: The Golden Army

I wasn't a huge fan of the first, but I still enjoyed it. This one looks way more exciting than the first, and it's more of Ron Pearlman.



The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

I really enjoy the Mummy movies, since they're like enjoyable second-rate Indy films. I'm glad they're going beyond Egypt and into some other cultures, and I really want to see a Jet Li VS Michelle Yeoh smackdown. That would absolutely make this movie for me. And again, Brendan Fraser.



Tropic Thunder

The trailer for this had more rolling. I know that Robert Downey, Jr. is getting a bit of flack for his portrayal of an African-American (much like his character in the movie), but he just seems so damn funny here ("I'm just a dude playin' a dude disguised as another dude!"). Throw in three great actors (well two, I don't think Ben Stiller is that great of an 'actor', but he is funny) playing actors who think they're making a movie, and that sounds like comic gold to me.



Pineapple Express

Seth Rogen, Judd Apatow, and James Franco. That is a winning combination. Really, I don't know much about this, but I just have a feeling I'll be laughing my ass off.



Hancock

It's a superhero movie that isn't based on a pre-existing superhero, and that sounds like genius to me. This is director Peter Berg's follow-up to The Kingdom, which was a decent action movie. It's nice to see a more comic approach to the comic book genre. The movie's page on Yahoo! says it best, "it's a bit refreshing to get a look at great power without great responsibility." Plus, Will Smith and Jason Bateman could be absolutely hilarious together.



Star Wars: The Clone Wars

What a way to start off a TV show: make the pilot a movie. Seriously, though, it's Star Wars and I'm a Star Wars nerd. 'Nuff said.

Wanted

Not too excited for this film, but it does look like it could be a decent action movie (I think it's based on a graphic novel?).

The X-Files

I was a mild fan of the show and movie, so I'll probably go check this out.

The Incredible Hulk

Supposedly, the filmmakers took inspiration from the 1970's TV show with Bill Bixby, a show which I loved (I caught the reruns on Sci-Fi as a kid, it aired either before or after decently-adapted Spider-man TV show). Also, I heard Edward Norton was really fighting to make sure the studio didn't mess with the movie too much since he really believes in this project. Could be interesting.

Traitor

Not a summer tentpole movie by any means, but that's a good thing. We need some decent serious thrillers in the midst of superheroes, explosions, and animated comedies.

Eagle Eye

Not exactly a summer movie, since it comes out in September. The idea for this movie came from Steven Spielberg, be he isn't directing, writing, or even producing it. This is also Shia LeBeouf's first attempt at a serious adult thriller after spending the past couple of years dodging giant robots, Soviets, and a creepy neighbor.

Bangkok Dangerous

Is Nicholas Cage doing a serious action movie? Who'd have thought? I know this is a remake, but it's being remade by the guys that did the original, so at least they already understand the source material. This could be either really awesome, or really bad (the Pang Bros. don't exactly have the best reputation in Asia).

You Don't Mess With The Zohan

The trailer looked mildly funny, but I'm not the biggest Adam Sandler fan. However, I like the concept: a top Israeli commando becomes a hair stylist. So ludicrous it could be hilarious.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, la tercera entrega de las películas de aventura del explorador/arqueólogo Rick O'Connel (Brendan Fraser) esta por estrenarse y por fin podemos ver el trailer de esta tercera parte. Personalmente, nunca me llamó mucho la atención el tema este de la Momia... no me parecía atractivo. Vi la primera parte más que nada porque aparecía mi futura esposa Rachel Weisz, quien lamentablemente no participa en esta ocasión. La segunda parte me la salté. Por lo mismo, esta tercera entrega me daba lo mismo, pensé que pasaría sin pena ni gloria, sin embargo, confieso que aunque no quedé saltando en una pata el trailer me llamó la atención... en realidad me gustó bastante y, si me apuran, podría decir que encontré que tenía un ritmo mejor a lo visto hasta ahora en los avances del arqueólogo aventurero por excelencia, el Doctor Indiana Jones y su Calavera de Cristal. En fin, a ver que opinan ustedes, el trailer a continuación.

Hasta primeros de agosto (el día 1 para ser mas exactos) tendremos que esperar a ver la tercera parte de "La momia 3", aunque esta vez no trate de la momia que ya habíamos conocido en anteriores entregas.

Antes de dejaros el trailer de la peli, el argumento de la misma: Condenados por una bruja traidora (Michelle Yeoh) a permanecer en muerte aparente para la eternidad, el despiadado emperador chino Dragón (Jet Li) y sus diez mil guerreros han esperado en su amplia tumba de barro, olvidados de todos, durante cientos de años, cual ejército de terracota. Pero cuando engañan al joven aventurero y arqueólogo Alex O’Connel para que despierte de su sueño eterno al temible gobernante, no le queda más remedio que pedir ayuda a las únicas personas que saben más que él acerca de los no muertos: sus padres. El monarca regresa a la vida con todo su poder y nuestros protagonistas descubren pronto que su afán de dominación no ha hecho más que crecer en todos estos años. Sirviéndose de poderes sobrenaturales inimaginables, el Emperador Momia cruzará el Lejano Oriente con su legión sin que nadie pueda detenerle... a menos que los O’Connell encuentren la forma de hacerlo.

Algo inevitable estando de por medio Vin Diesel, al que acompañan Gérard Depardieu, Michelle Yeoh, Charlotte Rampling, Mark Strong, Radek Bruna, Melanie Thierry y Lambert Wilson.
