The specifications are nearly identical to the minimum requirements of the original Crysis, with the only significant difference being a 3GB jump in required HDD space. However, Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli has repeatedly noted that the game-powering CryENGINE 2 has been "optimized to run better on a wider range of PCs."

At Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans we embrace the profundity of Sigmund Solares of Intercosm

At Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans we embrace the profundity of Sigmund Solares of Intercosmos Publishing Group, “… the bigger the firm, the more targets on their head.” At Onsite, we also subscribe to the notion that competition in the marketplace is WONDERFUL for consumers. Many will contend Microsoft, one of the biggest firms in our capitalistic society, has lots of targets and lots of competitors aiming at those targets. One of the latest firms to aim their competitive arsenal at a Microsoft target, Vista, is IBM.

IBM’s strategy is to form a team with open source Linux distributors Red Hat, Novell, and Canonical. The team’s objective is to design a Microsoft-free PC which incorporates a Linux operating system with a desktop productivity suite, and IBM’s Lotus Notes and Lotus Symphony. The Linux operating system and IBM’s Lotus Symphony for email are free. IBM contends the total cost of ownership of their system is 30% less than a Microsoft Vista system. The planned release date for the IBM product is the first quarter of 2009.

This competition brings to mind business school discussions of Darwinism and win/lose zero-sum games vs. the mathematical discipline of Game Theory and the simple example of “The Prisoners Dilemma” in a win/win scenario.

Some may contend Darwinian Theory implies self-centered behavior and eliminating competitors in any way possible is the only way to win. If you aren’t a winner, you’re a loser. The main tenet is survival of the strong and death of the weak makes the human race (or the capitalistic society) stronger. Some may say Microsoft business strategy subscribes to Darwinian Theory.

Game theory and The Prisoner’s Dilemma involve the decision process when you are faced with a problem: is it best to betray your friends and save your own derriere, or is it best to cooperate and create with your friends to win over strength? In this scenario of the battle to survive, individuals who collaborate with each other explode ahead of the self-centered Darwinians.

One of the overwhelming messages taught in business school is the notion of the win/win situation. Nature and animals don’t follow the Darwinian Theory of win/lose. Nature and animals follow a theory of win/win: where cooperation and creativity to reach common goals are the most powerful forces at work that lead to success. Those who form teams and work to create against the strong are the ones who succeed.

I don’t know if IBM considered Game theory and The Prisoner’s Dilemma when they decided to cooperate and create with open source partners and compete against one of the most powerful entities in the IT arena. It will be interesting to note the outcome of this contest between Microsoft’s Darwinian model of win/lose through elimination of your competitors at any cost, and IBM’s model of win/win through cooperation and creativity with others to reach common goals. Stay tuned – whatever happens, consumers will benefit.

The largest segment of clients of Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans is small business owners w

The largest segment of clients of Onsite Computer Services in New Orleans is small business owners who rely on Microsoft products to successfully operate their firms. Most of these business owners invest in the stock market and their portfolios contain Microsoft stock. Yesterday, as the stock market continued its roller-coaster ride of the past year, a client bemoaned the 20% decrease in value of Microsoft shares since the SNAFUs associated with the failed Yahoo purchase and lackluster Vista sales. Microsoft is currently trading at the lowest price-earnings ratio since the software maker went public 22 years ago.

Any student of corporate finance understands the importance of a public company’s share price and the expectations of investors and analysts. Steve Ballmer is well aware of Microsoft’s poor stock performance since February’s failed Yahoo purchase, and Mr. Ballmer is addressing this issue with a $20 Billion repurchase of its stock. According to CNBC, the stock repurchase plan should be completed within 90 days. The net effect of the buyback is an expected ~50% increase in Microsoft’s share price to $40/share within the next year.

Some contend Microsoft’s war with Google for online supremacy is all but lost. Ballmer realizes Google’s critical mass in search engine and online advertising is significant and Microsoft must commit considerable investment in R&D and marketing in the next few years to pose a challenge to Google’s supremacy.

What do you think? Should Microsoft invest the time and money to compete with Google in the online game? Is one, super-large, online search engine and advertising firm good for consumers?

Since Katrina, most Onsite Computer’s clients have reconsidered the importance of their informatio

Since Katrina, most Onsite Computer’s clients have reconsidered the importance of their information and are very familiar with the steps required to protect their data and Microsoft system in the event of another cataclysmic disaster. I recently received questions regarding evacuation procedures – I’ll post those suggestions for others facing their first hurricane season. This is quite simple – if you have any additional suggestions, please post them.

In the event of another ‘BIG ONE’ a few precautions will eliminate lots of headaches. If you must leave, I recommend the following procedures to protect your data and system.

Backup your data (i.e. Outlook data, documents, spreadsheets, presentations, accounting data, pictures, music) and anything important. Don’t worry about the programs – the data is important.

If your business has a server, then plan to evacuate the server. Disconnect your server or PC from all cables.

Pack your server or PC box, laptop, and your backup. Some think you should not worry about anything else. The cables, routers, switches, and modems are easily and cheaply replaced.

Drive to a safe haven.

If the worst case scenario happens, a knowledgeable network integrator can have your business up and running in a few hours at minimal cost. If you need help, call Onsite.

If you're searching for New Orleans computer service or repair of your Microsoft based system or network, then call the Microsoft specialists at 504-469-6991. Onsite Computer Services, Inc. in New Orleans

This is a follow on from my blog last week about a day in my life of personal computing in 2013.
So

This is a follow on from my blog last week about a day in my life of personal computing in 2013.

So I've had breakfast and I go to my PC to check email and messages. My wireless network at home now consists of a variety of devices and networks linked together. These include my Entertainment Server which links to various TV's around the house, the Sky Dish, cable TV, media audio players and recorders, HD radio tuner as well as the Toshiba Fenininity Server which allows us to control and monitor the stove, dishwasher, washing machine and dryer, climate control, breadmaker and a host of other appliances not to mention the HVS climate control.

I also have the latest Kindle which lets all of us read our personalised news. It aggregates the top stories from mother Herald as well as other papers and magazines of interest so we all get the version we want. Scared the hell out of me the other day when I opened my wife's logon by accident and all I saw was stories about TV and filmstars and their failed marriages and getting their 23rd adopted child out of Afghanistan which is the new Darfur. But then that is the beauty of it that we all get MeNews and not what someone else wants us to read.

I'm still into social networking in a big way, but have a number of portals that manage and aggregate each of my networks. I check my Music Portal which manages all the sites where I showcase my music. Now I can load my new songs, video's, blogs and gig calendar onto one site and it updates the 127 sites I feature on in one hit, according to each sites unique specification.

So it's time to go. I leave the house and activate the alarm which sends a signal to my iPhone to say the system is now armed and hop in the car. I drop the iPhone onto the little tray beside my seat and as I put the key into the ignition and my seat and steering wheel adjust itself to my preferred positions, my phone announces itself to the Wireless CANBUS so that it has access to the entertainment system.

I tell my integrated GPS navigation unit to take me to 'the office' select the podcast I want to listen to from those that are just audio as I don't want to get pinged by the distraction laws and get on the road. As I near the top of Chartwell Drive, my podcast pauses (I used to hate missing stuff when the old system just muted the sound) and the nav tells me that there is a serious traffic incident on High Rd that it has picked up on TMC and would I like to route around it. I say yes, and it seemlessly takes me on down Diana drive and I arrive at work right on time.

As I wait at a set of lights I check the Buddy feature on my GPS and see an image of my wife's car crawling along Bush Rd on her way to work. Her unit beeps to alert her that I have checked her location and she sends me a smart message back by tapping on the SMS keyboard on her nav unit which uses Bluetooth to send the message via her phone. Her car and system is a bit older than mine. 2009.

When I get to work my phone opens the carpark grill and after I have parked the car, it unlocks the door into the building and then into my office. I fire up my Touchbook which has just been upgraded to Vista ("WE" like to be cautious about our computer network and go to the machine in the kitchen for a perfectly fluffy flat white.

As I have done forever, I start my day with email. My touchscreen notebook is now running Windows Vista Touch and although Microsoft has announced their new OS I will be using this one for another couple of years until our IT Department is comfortable that it is reasonably robust, especially given that it took 3 years to get most of the kinks out of Vista and for a while they went back to offering Windows XP again as an option in the 2nd half of 2009.

One thing that we have now universally adopted is Unified Communications. All my voicemail whether it comes from my landline, mobile or email is now waiting for me in my Inbox and with my iPhone or my notebook.

My days haven't changed much. Probably the only major difference is that I do now use video on a lot of my phone calls so I can see the person I am talking to. This has saved me a lot of wasted travel time given the disaster that is Auckland's roads today. They have started building the Auckland Harbour Tunnel, but it will be a couple more years before it opens for buses and T3 (cars with at least 3 peple in them) let alone ordinary traffic. So many meetings have been replaced by necessity with vidphone calls. Of course I can also do this on my iPhone 6, but unless I'm doing it over the Wireless LAN (and we still don't have one in the office) the costs are prohibitive.

At lunch time I quite often walk to the Subway for some exercise and of course their food has the Heart Tick. On my way, I check out their menu on my iPhone and wonder if the food will look as good as the picture. I specify exactly what time I will get there. On the way back I get the phone to play me some Utterz messages from friends while I'm walking.

On the way home I drive past a bar and get a Speights Mates message saying there is a Happy Hour Running and sending me an eCoupon to get 2 for one in the next half hour and prompting me to hit the forward button to send the same coupon to any of my personal Speight's Mates who are within a 2km vicinity to come and join me for an after work beer. I love location based marketing and decide it is only right to support people who have invested in this technology given that I helped to develop it. Isn't that called the fruits of your labour? Yes. I know hops aren't strictly fruit.

Before dinner, I go to my home studio and record a lead track on my Gibson LP Guitar onto my 8 track TASCAM for my latest song, nothing has changed there really, call me old fashioned. I still have my music on loads of web sites and while I've sold some songs, I haven't scored a number one hit yet.

I bought the new Internet TV Aggregation Server last year and replaced my MySky. Now that I have cable for internet as well as TV, I can cherry pick and watch exactly what I want when I want and am no longer subject to the whims of SKy TV. Yes, I still subscribe to Sky Sports Channel because they have exclusive rights for many events that NZ teams compete in such as All Blacks Rugby and do support NZ sport better than anything else, especially the biased commentators, although I wuldn't have a problem if Murray Mexted got some new material, but the rest is pretty much free. I don't have to watch ads although many programs have very overt displays of product i the story.

I finally got an 80" TV, the largest my wife would let me buy, and that wasn't easy. Sometimes we have multple screens running so that we can watch different things at once and have adapted to that. We tried the VR glasses from the new Nintendo, but they are very antisocial. Awesome for 3D movies tough! Home entertainment is now awesome. No more channels full of reruns of programs we have already seen umpteen times, I never have to sit through another show of Friends again! Now I can see exactly what I want when I want, subject to agreement in the house of course and we all have to compromise sometimes,

Along with cable came free international calling to anywhere in the world for a modest flat fee, so I don't use Skype much anymore. Finally a little music from iLike at the end of the day. I kept my CD's and vinyl as souvenirs, but for a flat fee of $10 a month to our ISP, the house can access and download unlimited music from almost all record companies in MPEG 9 which is great quality at 960kbit/s.

Not a lot has changed in 5 years, but life is certtainly a little easier than it used to be.

[caption id="attachment_183" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="null"][/caption]

Here is an interesting recovery situation. The customer was running Oracle 7.3.4 on a Windows NT pla

Here is an interesting recovery situation. The customer was running Oracle 7.3.4 on a Windows NT platform. Now, this is not my favorite Oracle configuration, but it's a solid, stable configuration so who am I to argue?

In any case, the client lost the Oracle installation drive, as well as the drive with a couple of the oracle tablespace files. He did not have backups of the Oracle installation, nor did he have backups of all of the data files. He did have most of the data files though, so I suspect that someone created data files on the wrong drives, and his backup wasn't set up to back up the other drives (this is not uncommon by the way). This might sound like trouble, right? Well, not in this case ... luck was really on our side.

First I tried to re-install and re-create the database on the client's NT Server. This did not work. For some reason I could not install Oracle and create a database. I don't know if it was a bad Oracle installation CD or what, but I could not get the Oracle database to start no matter what I did.

Finally, I copied a zipped copy of the Oracle database files back to my PC. Then, I used one of the most useful pieces of software for consultants that Microsoft has ever developed. That is, Microsoft virtual PC.

I installed my own copy of Windows NT into a Virtual PC (yes, I had fully licensed copy just sitting around), and updated it to the most current version of Windows NT. In the process, I discovered that in order to use Virtual Machine Additions, I had to be on the most recent version of Windows NT (Build 1381, Service Pack 6). Once I had the additions installed, I installed Oracle 7.3.4. (yes, I had a CD of that sitting around also).

On my home Virtual PC, Oracle installed and started without problems, which led me to conclude that the client had issues on his NT server or with his installation CD. This would not be entirely unexpected consider the age of both pieces of software.

I used the 'create a database' installation option, then pointed the init.ora to the copy of the database that was sent to me, it had the controlfiles and everything, except for the datafiles on the other drive. I was able to drop the missing datafiles (alter database datafile offline drop), and startup the database.

Evidently the datafiles weren't required for the data that the client needed. I gave the client an export file of his data, and sent him the Virtual PC with his Oracle installation on a DVD. All the client needs to do if he wants to start the Oracle installation is copy the virtual PC to a modern operating system, install Microsoft Virtual PC, and start up his Virtual PC. The client was extremely happy because he had been wanting to upgrade this server for some time, but couldn't because of the antiquated operating system and Oracle version that was installed.

The whole process went so well, that I have to recommend it for small data recovery operations. It gives the consultant the ability to do the work on his home PC, and he make mistakes without worrying about losing data.

You might not want to try this at home by the way, my home PC has 64 bit Vista, 8G RAM, and mirrored 500G hard drives. Not to mention the licensed copy of Windows NT I had sitting around. But it was an interesting exercise.

Recently, an Onsite business client asked which Microsoft operating system we recommend on new laptops. Our client's daughter is preparing to leave the area to attend Duke University and she is ordering a new HP laptop and printer. Our client is XP literate and uses a custom network application to track his business inventory. He has experience with some of Vista's incompatibilities with applications and drivers. He was concerned with potential Vista problems for his daughter while she is attending Duke.

In Onsite's opinion, if you're a home/student user purchasing a new PC or laptop for general use with Microsoft Office 2007, than Vista problems with drivers and custom applications are not a concern. We recommend Vista instead of seven year-old XP for an end-to-end Microsoft solution, especially if the printer has Vista driver support.

New PCs, laptops, and peripherals provide drivers designed to work well with Vista, especially since the release of SP1. If you're NOT accessing old business applications, accounting systems, or printers, than most would contend Vista is the operating system for you.

Udite udite! Questa è grossa. (Cito testualmente notebookitalia )

via before wisdom

Attendiamo.
