Lange nichts geschrieben hier.

The Presidential Election in November will be one of the most important in America’s history.

The Presidential Election in November will be one of the most important in America's history. Barack Obama was nominated as the Democratic Presidential Nominee last week and John McCain will be nominated as the Republican Presidential Nominee this week.

With all the convention speeches, television ads, and political talk shows it's easy to get caught up in the emotion of the campaigns.

But given what is at stake for our country, it is important that we not pull the lever in November based solely on emotion. It is important that we understand "what they will do" if elected. That we understand their plans for America.

I've created a mindmap to help you decide which candidate to vote for. All of the content and graphics for the mindmap come directly from their respective websites. I have not added or deleted anything with respect to their policy positions. It is taken verbatim from their websites.

This is a historic election for the 300 million citizens of the United States of America. Whoever wins this election will shape our country and the world.

Choose wisely.

Real post number one, and I thought I'd look at the thing that effectively got me through my exams in August. Mindmaps are the probably the greatest weapons any student can have in his study arsenal.

According to Wikipedia "a mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged radially around a central key word or idea. Mind maps are used to generate, visualize, structure, and classify ideas, and as an aid in study, organization, problem solving, decision making, and writing."

Here's one that I used for my course, created using a program called Mind Manager:Philosophy MindMap

Quite simply what they can do is squash a module down and streamline it into a series of interrelated topics which can be tackled individually. They're also great for planning projects and things.

It is one of those positive thinking "can do" mindmaps that you'll want to refer to again and again.

Saya jadi ingat MindMap(R)-nya Tony Buzan.

Mindmap-nya Tony Buzan, rumit.

Sharing saja, sampai sekarang pun masih mencoba memperbaiki kemampuan otak. Selamat mencoba!

TheBrain Technologies has created the most dynamic mindmapping software on the market: PersonalBrain

TheBrain Technologies has created the most dynamic mindmapping software on the market: PersonalBrain 4.5.

With most mindmapping software the central main topic remains in place regardless of the software's drill down capability.

But with PersonalBrain whatever topic (or what they call a "Thought") you click "becomes" the central main topic. And what's even more remarkable is that the related topics associated with the "new" main topic are also displayed.

One challenge, of course, is describing this remarkable software with words. So here is a visual to illustrate what I mean. Below notice when "Markets" is clicked the other Thoughts associated with Markets are also dynamically displayed:

Shelley Hayduk, Vice President of Marketing and Sales for TheBrain Technologies, notes on the TheBrain Blog, that this approach to mindmapping has several major advantages:

Information can be dynamically loaded as it is needed, enabling infinite scalability so that vast amounts of information can be mapped.

There is always a context for the current item, so details such as contact information can always be synchronized with the display and usage of the system can be accurately measured and reported against.

Non-hierarchical relationships can be displayed. Because of the self-referencing nature of networked information, it is impossible to represent non-hierarchical information visually unless the display is rendered from the perspective of a selected item.

Another tremendous advantage of PersonalBrain is its ability to dynamically manage enormous amounts of information.

Shelley Hayduk, puts it this way, "With conventional mind mapping software, each map cannot practically be larger than a few hundred items. PersonalBrain is designed to allow tens of thousands of items and files to be integrated into a single workspace. The software offers a dynamic visual display that is infinitely scalable. In fact, this same interface is in use at the Department of Defense, Encyclopedia Britannica and large Fortune 500s to navigate and visualize hundreds of thousands of objects and databases. It would be impossible to scroll through such large data sets with standard mind maps."

If you are interested in a robust, dynamic, information management solution, I highly recommend you download PersonalBrain 4.5 for 30 days and experience it for yourself. Click here to download.

After you download the software, play the video below for Tips and Tricks on using PersonalBrain 4.5:

I love them!

Here's why. When you go into an exam your brain has to recall information from somewhere in the jumble of knowledge. Imagine going to a filing cabinet to get something out and you haven't been in there for a while. You will find it, but it'll take you longer.

If you complete a mind map (without looking at your notes/book) then your brain is forced to search for the knowledge. This means in the exam your brain has searched for this already and knows where to find it.

Mind maps also help your brain to organise the information. For example, a proper mind map would involve different bits for different topics or ideas. This allows your brain to link ideas together by topic, so again, when you need to find it easily you can.

Most people find they help because many people learn well visually and nearly everyone is more visual than auditory, but I'm not into putting you in a box and saying you learn best in a certain way, so try different ideas. Try recording stuff onto your ipod, for example, and listen on the way to school.

A good mind map:

big, easy to read, stick a few bits of paper together if you need to.

colourful, different colours for different ideas

include diagrams & silly pictures to represent things

Mindmapping online:

mindmeister lets you create and share mind maps online. In brainstorming mode you and your friends can work simultaneously on the same mind map. Get together with classmates to make a mind map for your exam revision.

Mindomo doesn't let several of you work on the mind map at the same time, but the graphics and colour schemes are good. You can still save your mindmap.

Do what works for you, if mind maps don't work then that's fine, do something else!

I thought that the best way to share the conference was to use some of the collaborative tools that we learned about at the conference.

I began with mindomo.com but soon found that for collaboration, this wasn't the best tool. Here's what happened. I created a mind map and shared it with 2 others to collaborate. They opened the map in the morning, kept it open all day doing other things. Meanwhile, I was working away filling it up. I saved my map. They, at the day's end added a few things to their open map, which had never updated automatically and saved the morning map with only a few things OVER my afternoon efforts. In other words, not having auto save features, OR a feature which would have let them know that I was working, they erased my data. Features that need to be added for sure!

So, attempt two we switched to Mindmeister. You can find this new mind map at: Distance Learning Conference: What We Learned.

For those among you who are using Mindmap or want to go deeper into this wonderful methodology/tool, I suggest the reading of this free PDF from William P. Sheridan

click this link -> How to think like a knowledge worker ?

If you do not have a mindmap software, you can use "free mind" a freeware that can introduce you easily to this methodology. I personnally use Minjet MindManager.

Chuck Frey, Mindmapping Thought Leader and creator of The Mind Mapping Software Blog recently interviewed Michael Tipper, Mindmapping Thought Leader and specialist in accelerated learning principles and techniques.

This is simply one of the best interviews on mindmapping you'll ever read! Michael Tipper REALLY understands the power of mindmapping.

He understands that it's about the results mindmapping can produce (both educational and business) that should be the focus, rather than mindmapping as this creative diagram with words, images and colors.

He puts it this way in the interview: "Millions of drills are sold to people every year who do not want a drill. What they want is the hole and of course the drill is the route to that. But ultimately it is the hole they are after. In other words, they don’t care about the tool as much as the benefit that the tool provides. It’s the same with mind mapping."

You'll have to read the interview to get the rest of his point. I strongly encourage you to do so.

Chuck Frey asks some great questions and Michael Tipper gives some great answers. You'll learn a lot about the power of mindmapping and how it can change your life.

I've basically finished the OLAP prototyping tool. I need to upload the code to somewhere. I will probably do this when I'm back in the UK. So mostly likely at the weekend.

The tool allows you not only create the model but also add rules (which are done by attaching notes to the nodes and set weights. By default the weight of an element will be one. However by using the 1 icon it will be given a weight of minus one.

I've uploaded a few more presentations to screencast. Unfortunately the screen recording tool will only allow for short 5 minute recordings. The first recording is basically talking about BI and setting the scene. The last two recordings are creating cubes etc slicing and dicing the data with JPalo.

As you can see this was all done on a mac. It's a shame Tensegrity don't have a RCP download available on their site for ma users, since I sure other less technical people might not know how to make the eclipse client work.

We all have to make decisions everyday. Weighing the pros and cons of those decisions can be very difficult at times.

To help make the process easier, Mindjet has created a mindmap template that helps you more effectively identify the right solution. It helps you sort through the pros and cons of any decision.

I've personally found this template to be very useful. There is nothing like seeing your pros and cons side by side.

Here's the template for your review:

I've noticed that this blog has been getting numerous hits pertaining to palo and mac related searches. Indeed many of these are related to searches such as "Jpalo Mac"

I can only assume that there are people out there eager to use JPalo on the mac. Well the good news is that this is possible and you have all the same functionality as anyone else. Unfortunatley Tensegrity Haven't got a download on their website for an eclipse RCP. I can only assume this is because they don't a mac in their office and that since SWT uses native GUI controls they couldn't test a package and so weren't willing to publish something which might not work.

However fear not it's no big deal to get the eclipse addin working all youneed to do is visit eclipse.org and download a copy eclipse. This will give you a full blown eclipse development environment, but more importantly the application will contain the native SWT jars for the mac. Next goto the tensegriy site and download either a windows or linux version of the eclipse client. Within there you need to copy the folders within the plugin sections to the plugins folder of the version of eclipse you downloaded.

When you start eclipse you need to change the perspective to Palo Client or Palo admin and your good to go. Slicing and dicing cubes, adding users and groups and many other such tasks are now easily accomplished.

In fact I hope to produce a screencast in the next few days which shows a palo server running on the mac, a model creating using a mindmap and then an iterative agile development cycle using the JPalo RCP and the mindmap to rapidly revise the model.

If anyone has questions on eclipse and jpalo give me a shout.
