The Blackberry iPhone .. I mean 'Storm'

Love is a many splendored thing. How else could you explain the way cell-phone companies can say "I envy and desire you" with their eyes while throwing darts at pictures of the iPhone?

As proof, take the latest "iPhone killer" to emerge from RIM. Hot on the heels of the Googlephone, the Blackberry Storm is Research in Motion's strike at Cupertino, California-based Apple and a sleek little number at that. Of course Crackberry fans have been ablaze with desire and this feature in Time Magazine did nothing to quench their gadget-lust.

Not that it's a bad looking phone: on the contrary, it is sleek and boasts some innovative features (the 'clickable screen' is very cool for openers, and there are others). Then there is RIM's ability to deliver the goods, which is legendary. Whether you use 'push' e-mail of the Microsoft Exchange variety or pop3 such as Hotmail, Gmail, etc., Blackberry will most likely get it to you faster than any other device, and sends replies without missing a beat thanks to RIM's proprietary network. Even as a hard-core iPhone fan I must admit that the AT&T network is no substitute for Blackberry's flawless delivery system.

So shine on you crazy diamond. Although we suspect that rumors of the iPhone's demise are greatly exaggerated, the Storm is still a damn cool phone.

When you have a website, you can see what search terms people use to find it. At the moment, a lot

When you have a website, you can see what search terms people use to find it. At the moment, a lot of people are interested in the Other People's Breast Milk programme Kate Garraway has done, so a lot of the hits I get are people who've googled things like Kate Garraway breastfeeding calf or Kate Garraway breastfeeding. Same goes for Angelina Jolie breastfeeding the twins and Jamie Lynn Spears breastfeeding Maddie (and rumours she's pregnant again) - lots of interest there!

In fact, a lot of the hits I get are from people googling things about celebrities and their breasts or infant feeding habits. I am pretty sure that some of them aren't innocent breastfeeding queries, shall we say ("Kate Garraway nips", for heavens sake!), but a lot are - you can tell by the way they're phrased. One recently was "do celebrities feed their babies formula?" - if you search that phrase, this site is the second listed on google.

Some are funny - I went through a phase of getting hits from people searching something about women breastfeeding piglets (I had made an obscure reference to James Herriot and a piglet in an article) and there are some people who want to know about Jeni Barnett nude or Vanessa Feltz breastfeeding - more than you might imagine, in fact!

I also have been getting lots - really lots - of hits from people searching problems to do with infant formula - things about babies having rashes or tummy aches after formula, allergic reactions to formula, etc.

But some search terms are heartbreaking and I wish I could reach out and hug the person searching the internet - things like "guilt over not being able to breastfeed," "I don't enjoy breastfeeding" and the title of this post - "Why is breastfeeding hard?" And that got me thinking. Why is it hard? Or is it just that feeding a baby formula is physically "easy" by comparison (from the point of view of there's no chance it'll make you bleed, unless you cut yourself opening the tub, I guess!)?

But is it easy, really? The enormous number of hits I get from people who are clearly struggling with guilty feelings about not breastfeeding - are they finding formula-feeding "easy"? One of the oft-touted phrases of early motherhood is "Don't let anyone make you feel guilty", but I would suggest that nobody "makes" you feel guilty when you find yourself doing something you don't want to do - it's largely an internal process. So why not talk about it? Why does it have to be hidden, like a shameful secret? I'm not suggesting people ought to feel guilty, far from it. But if you do feel guilty, why not explore those feelings, work out why you feel guilty, talk about how you'd like things to have gone, get it all out in the open? It seems there's a conspiracy of silence around this issue which means women grieve in private (for fear being judged?), get angry when the subject comes up and often feel they need to perpetuate the myth that you mustn't feel guilty when they're aching with pain themselves.

There's an excellent website, Mobi (Mothers Overcoming Breastfeeding Issues) which addresses a lot of this. It was set up "for mothers who grieved their unsuccessful breastfeeding relationships. They were surprised and comforted to find other mothers had similar experiences. Their mutual support enabled some mothers to find solutions or closure."

And to all of you who wind up here feeling awful, I do hope you leave feeling a little bit better. Be kind to yourself - you're doing good.

Toshiba, HP etc).

performante come in Italia.
sono ancora mooolto lente e nonparagonabili all'adsl. Lo saranno in
futuro.

Vintage TV show You Are There represented early television's attempt to evoke a live event by recreating a historical one. Kind of like reporting or blogging. As a TV show however, it was the kind of yawner that could only have aired at a time when the medium was desperate for content and network executives reasoned that any show that had enjoyed success on the radio couldn’t miss on TV. So what's that got to do with NextFest 2008? Let me explain.

Mr. Micro Meet Mr. Blog

When I got the invitation to hear Wired Editor in Chief Chris Anderson talk about his book Free! I planned to blog the experience as I had the ABA TechShow and other events over the past few years.

But when I arrived at NextFest something told me this was going to be different. Maybe it was the pervasive use of blue lights or the elegant feng shui of the exhibits; maybe I had an epiphany wedged in the front row of the audience between one lady holding a video-camera over my head and another balancing a pocket recorder between thumb and forefinger inches from my face. Whatever the reason, I knew that I had to take evasive action. My answer: iPhone + Twitterphone. You can see the results in this companion post or choose to follow me on Twitter.

So...What's The Connection?

As Anderson noted in his presentation, The Future of Free (which is really just his spin on Joseph Schumpeter's theory of “creative destruction”), there are a number of forces that link new ideas and new media, from You Are There in the early days of television to Twitter on the Internet. They are:

Fear of scarcity brings out radically different behaviors than hopes of abundance

The latter inevitably leads to waste - the good kind that encourages trial-and-error

Where the cost of failure is virtually zero, experimentation will flourish

Where people are trying new things all the time, at least 1 good idea is bound to assert itself

If the attempt is a bust, the cycle can quickly restart thanks to low barriers and costs

In the end, You Are There wasn't so much a TV show as a radio program retrofitted for the new medium. It wasn't until mass adoption of TV-sets and the ubiquity of free programming a decade later that broadcasters began understanding that they could afford to fail and not lose their audience. The experience lead TV in directions that its inventors could never have foreseen.

The Future of Free! Is The Future of the Internet

The Internet is our generation’s zero-cost distribution system; our TV. Twitter itself is a perfect example of how the Internet has lead to waste – the wrong and right kinds. So what if Twitter and its clones turn out to be spectacular failures? It doesn't matter; the eco-system created by the Internet is still at work so long as thousands of failures lead to 1 good idea. After all, that's what the future of free is all about.

Feast your eyes on the first cell-phone to have goodies like Gmail, Search, Calendar, and more built in from the get-go via the innovative and, until now, secretive Android mobile OS. The so-called Google Phone has been a myth for as long as the iPhone (dubbed the "Jesus Phone" by Apple fans); even true believers had to wonder if the Google Phone would ever materials. But the Google faithful were duly rewarded last month with the release of Chrome and this month, the Google Phone.

Far from being a myth, the very real T-Mobile G1 boasts a gaggle of Google applications baked right in, and is the first cell-phone to use a truly open operating system built by a consortium. The upshot is that in theory developers could be popping out applications for the device in no time. Looking further into the future, in a year users should be able to make their Android-powered phones do pretty much anything from turning on the lights at home remotely to automatically letting contacts know they will be late to a meeting based on their GPS-determined position. It's a brave new world, campers!

Of course the faithful have heard that one before ... but hope springs eternal. I mean, they did come out with a phone, and last month a browser right? How badly could they blow this golden opportunity? Do you really want to know the answer? I didn't think so.

In the 1999 geek classic, "Pirates of Silicon Valley", an Apple employee watching the famous "1984" commercial with Steve Jobs points to the Big Brother character -- intended to represent IBM -- and then points to Bill Gates of Microsoft, whom Jobs has just introduced as part of Apple's family. The silent message is that the real threat to Apple is Microsoft, not IBM, and indeed the following scene depicts Jobs confronting Gates after Jobs sees Windows 1.0 running on an NEC PC.

That scene, set in 1983, could be easily recreated 25 years later, substituting the iPhone for the Macintosh, Microsoft for IBM as the iPhone's perceived threat, and Google for Microsoft as the iPhone's more serious threat. Like Microsoft in 1983, Google is a key Apple partner in 2008. The iPhone features Google Maps, GMail and Google as its default Web search engine, and Google CEO Eric Schmidt even sits on Apple's board of directors. And also like Microsoft in 1983, Google is working fervently to create a wide range of competitors to Apple's iPhone. None of these may ever match the integrated experience of Apple's iPhone, but it's clear that the first Android phone has come closer to the iPhone experience than Windows 1.0 did to the original Macintosh operating system. Nevertheless, Google's task is a lot more daunting than Microsoft's was for several reasons.
Like we didn't see this coming....

Never understood why SanDisk waited so long. Flash-cards with pre-loaded info has been a marketing tool most have come to understand. Considering the growth and expansion of mobile devises over the pre-dated "Notebook" is was only a matter of time before this would take hold.

About a year ago we here experimented with some OEM pre-loaded cards. A novel marketing idea at the time that served it purpose over the 07' holiday season but never took hold. Flash-card has one big advantage over a CD, it is re-useable.

Does this really spell the end of CDs, doubt it. Heck it took over 6 years to kill the floppy and that still makes an appearance no and then.

Marketing people need a new approach. And the fastest way to get connected with any audience these days is through their phone. Drop us aline would like hear your commentary on this...

http://www.eink.com/

eInk is not back lit.

eInk devices are not as harsh on your eyes as LCD displays.

eInk devices cannot be read in the dark.

eInk devices have no active lighting therefore draw less battery power and require less frequent charging than LCD displays.

There is a few second delay between page turns (known as refresh rate).

Electronic ink is a proprietary material that is processed into a film for integration into electronic displays. Although revolutionary in concept, electronic ink is a straightforward fusion of chemistry, physics and electronics to create this new material. The principal components of electronic ink are millions of tiny microcapsules, about the diameter of a human hair. In one incarnation, each microcapsule contains positively charged white particles and negatively charged black particles suspended in a clear fluid. When a negative electric field is applied, the white particles move to the top of the microcapsule where they become visible to the user. This makes the surface appear white at that spot. At the same time, an opposite electric field pulls the black particles to the bottom of the microcapsules where they are hidden. By reversing this process, the black particles appear at the top of the capsule, which now makes the surface appear dark at that spot.

To form an E Ink electronic display, the ink is printed onto a sheet of plastic film that is laminated to a layer of circuitry. The circuitry forms a pattern of pixels that can then be controlled by a display driver. These microcapsules are suspended in a liquid "carrier medium" allowing them to be printed using existing screen printing processes onto virtually any surface, including glass, plastic, fabric and even paper. Ultimately electronic ink will permit most any surface to become a display, bringing information out of the confines of traditional devices and into the world around us.

Some devices come with WiFi 802.11b technology, which means the device, can theoretically connect to the internet. Be aware that you cannot ‘surf’ the internet on many eReading devices so check manufacturer’s web sites.

Don Murray and idomainmedia.com announces the sale of Mycellphone.mobi for $15,000.

A few months back we had the opportunity to sell a few of our .mobi domain names to a company called Smartphone SP (Pty) Ltd), one those names was MyCellphone.mobi. Prior to to that our first sale to the company was Mymobile.mobi for $15,500 back in January. Not all of our sales are made public but I wanted to post about this because .mobi is such a debate with domainers and also felt that this would make a great first post to my new blog.

Many questions arise when it comes to .mobi names such as, are they worth anything? Will they be worth anything in the future? Will the iphone make the .mobi obsolete? I,m not certain and don't put to much time into it as I think we will not know for certain for another 2 years. What I do believe is that .com will always be number 1.

I will take my profit on any .mobi and will reinvest the rest in whatever I feel will get me the greatest return which is most likely .com. I do have plans to test and develop some of my insurance related .mobi names that I feel could do very well in the future.

On the other side of this .mobi conversation, if your a big domain owner such as Rick Schwartz or Michael Berkens owning the .mobi extension is probably a good idea just in case it goes big. It's such a small investment to them in relation to what they own, for other domainers it may not be the best idea to put all your eggs into one extension.

We will announce another 5 figure .mobi sale in the coming weeks.

Man, this is a difficult search that I’m conducting.
I’m trying to find free web hosting

Man, this is a difficult search that I'm conducting.

I'm trying to find free web hosting that actually doesn't suck. And believe me, it's hard to get quality service that you don't pay for. Why? Because if you're not paying people your money, they don't care about you; at all. It's sad, but it's the truth. Well, not really, I'm kinda joking, but still.

I've been using 50Webs for a while now. In fact, I think I've been using 50Webs ever since around grade seven or eight. Which is like three, four, five years (I'm not going to waste writing time counting). Now, 50Webs is pretty sweet. It's 100% free (well, the Free Plan is free...) and this is what the free plan includes: 60 MB of server space, unlimited bandwidth, and unlimited sub domains (yournamehere.50webs.com). But the thing that sucks is that there's no PHP or MySQL with the free plan. I wanted to set up my own hosted WordPress and Pastebin websites, so I decided to try and find a web hosting company that offers those two features.

I found x10Hosting, and basically, it's a too-good-to-be-true type of thing. Don't even bother trying it out. All they do is give you an account, then, if you do something like upload 40 KB of data to your server, your account becomes suspended. To get your account unsuspended, you have to wait fifteen minutes, or go make posts in the forums. You can pay forum points to have your account unsuspended right away. That's the catch. They want people to post in those forums for some reason, so that's how they get you.

I was going to start using Freehostia, but they only offer one MySQL database. So that's bullshit.

Umm, I'm going to stop talking about web hosting, because I'm getting bored of it now. I'm just gonna keep using 50Webs.

Man, there is this awesome website called Media-Convert.com. You just go there, and convert almost ANY type of media to ANY type of media! It's amazing. There is also a neat website that is affiliated with Media-Convert, called Media-Mobi.com. You can upload videos and audio files there. They are private files, there is no search or index of the videos. Only the people who have the link can see it. The file size limit is 600 MB! God damn! Trust me, those two websites are cool.

by Esther C Kane - SEO Webmaster - Eckweb Designs, Inc.

Internet access via cell phones and other similar devices is extremely large throughout Europe and Asia, but has not quite caught on in the USA.

Read this article in the International Herald Tribune, for more information about cell phone use throughout the world.

My point is that eventually, the United States will catch on and will begin copying the Europeans and the Asians in their mobile Internet habits. So, what should you be doing to get ready?

Go .mobi

The extension, .mobi, is intended for websites on a mobile format, like cell phones. So, how do you go about getting your website ready for mobile use?

1) Purchase the .mobi version of your domain name. Go to your registrar, where you purchased your domain name and purchase the .mobi version. You should purchase it for at least 2 years.

2) Contact your website designer (or whoever is managing your website) and ask them to create a .mobi version of your website. To get an idea of what .mobi websites look like, check out mobinomy.com

3) Ask your website designer to add a link from your website to your .mobi version. Try to add the link at the top left hand corner of the website. Why? Because that is the section of your website that comes up on the cell phone. So, when a user reaches your website they'll be able to access the .mobi version quickly and easily.

Oh, and just so you know. Google is one of the biggest backers of promoting the .mobi concept. In fact, google.mobi looks like this on a cell phone,

http://emulator.mtld.mobi/emulator.p...&Submit=Submit

And you have the option to have your results only from .mobi sites or mobile friendly sites. Now, that's pretty cool!

It's the beginning of the next big thing. At least, I think so!
