Lifehacker explains how: It starts by “jailbreaking” your phone,

A:

A laptop is the ideal replacement for your desktop computer. The greatest advantage of a laptop is i

A laptop is the ideal replacement for your desktop computer. The greatest advantage of a laptop is its portability. Unlike desktop computers, you can easily move a laptop around your home, carry it to work or class and take it with you when you travel. Laptops are a big investment, so before buying one, you should consider many factors like the manufacturer, performance and features.

What kind of laptop user are you?

A home user wants all the features of a desktop PC in the form of a notebook. If you are a home user, then choose a notebook which is easy to carry and comes with the most basic computer applications. Students should opt for an affordable laptop which is light and durable. Frequent fliers need slim notebook models with long-lasting batteries. A business user should purchase a laptop with plenty of hard disk space and advanced security features while a gamer needs a fast processor and the latest graphics card.

What are the different kinds of laptop computers available?

Laptops for Entertainment:

Multimedia laptops are always more expensive and heavier than your standard model. These laptops come with a powerful processor, abundant memory and a large hard drive. You can use these laptops as a mobile DVD player, MP3 jukebox and a digital photo album. If you buy a TV tuner card, you can even use your multimedia notebook as a television set. These notebooks are ideal for PC gaming.

Laptops for Business:

Laptops especially designed for business use are ultra portable. These laptops are durable and more secure than the basic laptop. They are best suited for consumers who are always on the move. A good business laptop should offer a fingerprint reader or SmartCard support to prevent data theft. These notebooks usually have advanced computer applications and wireless capabilities, so you can work even when you are away from your desk.

Laptops for Home:

The home user typically uses a laptop for checking mail and browsing the web. These laptops perform general tasks. A high speed processor is an unnecessary luxury and tends to be wasted on most home users. Opt for a notebook with at least a 14-inch screen and a comfortable keyboard. These laptops are generally heavy, weighing more than 4 kg at times. Their average battery life is less than three hours.

What constitutes a good laptop?

Ergonomics:

If you are going to use your laptop extensively, then you need to be comfortable with the keys. Try a laptop with slightly larger keys to avoid straining your fingers from typing. Most laptops come with a touch pad or a tracking pointer instead of a mouse. If you are a PC gamer, buy a separate mouse which can keep up with the fast-paced action on screen.

Operating Systems:

The Windows XP Media Center Edition is a good operating system for entertainment laptops. It makes optimal use of multimedia features like TV tuners, radio tuners and media players. If you are a professional who prefers Apple notebooks but are concerned about compatibility, check out the dual boot models by Apple that allow you to install and run Windows as well as Mac OS X. If you prefer PCs, Microsoft Vista is an ideal alternative to Windows XP. Vista comes in several editions, including Vista Home Basic and Vista Home Premium for the home user, Vista Business for the professional and Vista Ultimate for the best of both worlds.

Memory and Storage:

All data and applications are stored in the RAM (random access memory). Many laptops commonly use 256 MB of RAM. Most business laptops and entertainment laptops come with 512 MB or more of RAM. The more RAM you buy, the more data you can store.

The hard drive stores all programs and files. For the average home user, a 20 GB hard drive will more than suffice. If you buy a laptop for entertainment or business purposes, a 60 GB hard drive will better serve your needs. Some entertainment laptops even have multiple hard drives for better performance. Hard drives come with different speeds. Most laptop hard drives have a speed of 5,400 rpm. However, faster hard drives go up to 7,200 rpm.

Display:

The size of a laptop is based on the size of the screen. Screen size starts as small as 10.6 inches and goes up to 20 inches diagonally. Most laptops have an LCD monitor. However, if you are using your laptop for CAD, a CRT monitor will serve you just as well, if not better. The screen resolution determines the crispness of your image. A 12.1 inch display uses WXGA resolutions (1,280 by 800). A 14 or 15 inch display typically uses WSXGA+ (1680 by 1,050), although a small number of notebook computers use WUXGA (1,920 by 1,200) instead.

Processor:

It is more difficult to upgrade a notebooks processor than it is to upgrade a desktop computer. For this reason, you should buy a processor with a speed that will best suit your use. Also, it is wise to choose a processor with less battery consumption. Processors with 1.4 to 1.6 Ghz are preferred by most users.

Battery:

Lithium ion batteries are commonly used in laptops. The average battery life is about 3 hours. It takes around 75 minutes to fully recharge a lithium ion battery.

Graphics Card:

A graphics card, sometimes referred to as a video adapter, is responsible for generating the images you see on a laptops display. For businessmen who need to do lot of presentations, a graphics card containing 32 or 64 MB of dedicated memory is the right choice. There are also specially designed cards for gaming. These cards are expensive and should be avoided unless you require excellent graphics.

USB Ports:

Laptop computers come with at least one USB port so that you can connect peripherals to the notebook. Recent models have a FireWire connection that lets you transfer digital information from camcorders or MP3 players.

Optical Drives:

Most laptops come with either a CD-ROM (compact disc, read-only memory), a CD-RW (compact disc, re-writeable) or a DVD-ROM (digital versatile disc, read-only-memory). The DVD+RW/+R with CD-RW is a combination drive which will read a CD or a DVD and write data to a DVD as well.

Modem:

Laptops are available with integrated modems for dial-up connections, Ethernet ports for cable internet and DSL and wireless modems for Wi-Fi connections. Many business laptops also have a cellular wireless modem so you can browse at broadband speeds with just a mobile phone signal.

i am having problems receiving faxes we are keeping the fax system busy with faxes going out and coming in. is there anyway we can have more than one line on this fax software. if so how?

A:
Running the fax server with more than one modem would be no problem. You just need to connect an additional modem to the fax server in that case and then add the modem with the menu Communication / Modem / New.

As Nobel-laureate Murray Gell-Mann described it at the 2002 Embedded Systems Conference in San Francisco, embedded systems is about putting a computer in a bed so the bed automatically moves to best enhance the activities that any couple on the bed may be engaging in (to put it tactfully). The concept extends to more than beds of course, but properly done, it's clear why this technology will be a winner.

Judging from the products presented at the 2002 Embedded Systems Conference in San Francisco, embedded systems are ready for a number of advertising & marketing applications for the small to mid-sized business, ranging from desktop kiosks to Internet connected coffee makers.

The history of embedded systems goes back at least to the sixties, but the expense and limitations of the early systems limited their use. Embedded systems really took off in 1992, when the PC/104 Consortium was founded by Ampro, RTD, and other manufacturers. The group established a format for Intel microprocessors based on a motherboard approximately four inches square, and just under an inch high. The boards were stackable, allowing a very powerful computer to be assembled in a box approximately four inches square, or even less.

The PC/104 was initially targeted at military and medical markets, where it became widely used and respected. When the processor power increased enough to handle multimedia applications, PC/104-based kiosks became possible, and eventually common.

Today, there are estimated to be well over 100 different companies making PC/104 products. There are PC/104 cards to add ethernet, FireWire, hard drives, RAM drives, video cards, audio cards, general I/O, flash cards, modems, GPS, cellular telephone, wireless Internet, and more, to the PC/104 motherboard of your choice. Some off-the-shelf PC/104 cases can handle up to 13 or more cards, so your budget is your only constraint.

Modemtype: Allgemeines Klasse 1 Modem
Modemklasse: 1

ActiveFax can be used with the following types of modems, ISDN boards and fax boards:

Fax modems that support fax class 1, 2 or 2.0
ISDN boards that support the T.30 (Fax Group 3) protocol
Diva Server boards from Eicon
Fax boards from Brooktrout
Fax boards from Intel/Dialogic (Cpi series)
VoIP/FoIP (Voice over IP/Fax over IP)
Avoid low-cost modems
In general, we recommend to avoid using low-cost modems for faxing, since such modems are usually only tested for data and Internet connections and do not work very reliable in fax mode. Since a modem has do establish connections to hundrets of different fax machines, using low-cost modems often causes problems when connections to certain types of fax machines cannot be done.

We recommend the following modems, ISDN boards and fax boards to be used with ActFax:
Analog Modems
Aztech 56k Turbo 2

It seems some kids and even some adult people ( not to talk of ignorant computer, laptop hardware dealers) have difficulties getting their own or customer broadband Internet connection from BSNL India - working with Ubuntu or Kubuntu Linux.

The BSNL Broadband connection costs only Rs 250/- per month and because it is an ADSL connection you can also use the telephone connection on the same phone line. You just need to phone up the BSNL Broadband support and ask them to give you the BSNL LAN details. Usually the BSNL Broadband support staff are very helpful and will give you : Gateway Address, Primary DNS and Alternate DNS - All very simple - Just note down on piece of paper
The ADSL modem that BSNL gives - like Sterlite which is a Chinese modem works very well with Ubuntu Linux in Kanpur Lucknow and all of Uttar Pradesh and no separate drivers are required. Just connect the Ethernet and phone lines to the modem. Connect the Ethernet cable to your AMD or Intel motherboard Ethernet port - (Do not bother yourself with USB ) . A green and yellow light comes on at back of the Ethernet card if you see the back of your computer or laptop.

What next ? Once your Ubuntu or Kubuntu is installed from your ISO CD go to Applications - Accessories - Terminal and log in as root user. In Ubuntu root user is sudo

Type in the following in your shell - GNOME desktop shell also called GNOME Terminal :

sudo pppoeconf - Then enter the username that BSNL gave you. Next enter the password. Keep all the default settings - Do not leave any spaces - Do it all once or twice or thrice - and you will become perfect in setting up BSNL Broadband Internet for other Ubuntu Linux users in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar :

$: sudo pon dsl-provider

( sudo poff dsl-provider - to disconnect Internet connection ) Next time when you switch on your computer with Ubuntu, the Internet connection will already be started and waiting for you. No need to touch the shell again.

Nowadays most computer dealers will give you a Ubuntu or Kubuntu CD for just Rs 100 and you can install everything yourself. To install printer, keep the printer on while installing your Ubuntu.

In case of any problem - Check your BSNL broadband Internet connection with :

$: sudo plog ifconfig

Try ping command if required but usually not required. Go to any website from your Firefox browser like : http://www.example.com from Applications - Internet

I know some people get very confused by the Linux Shell Commands. But guys one day you did learn to speak free and legal English didn't you ?

And hey, your Rs 250/- per month ADSL Broadband connection from BSNL is working at lightning speed in Kanpur Lucknow, Jhansi, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Patna Moradabad. Nothing else to do. Go and have a cup of tea and some samosas. Just tune in to an Internet radio station from your Ubuntu OS and enjoy the latest music and video clips.

Hello Jhumritalayia ...main aa gaya ... Remember Munnabhai when he starts getting phone calls from the top medical colleges of Mumbai ? Yes that's the spirit. Ah, now you are laughing like Boman Irani .. but wait dont do so when you are doing an operation on someone in your hospital.

Happy Ubuntu !! Everything is working fine !! Free legal Ubuntu !! I'm loving it baby !! And yes if somebody next door wants your help, please please do help them out as well. This is the spirit of Ubuntu in Kanpur and Lucknow. If your Ubuntu is working fine, as it should, please do spend some time to get your neighbours Ubuntu working also on their desktop or laptop. No need to wait for posh IIT engineers or overpaid research engineers. They will never come to you.

The following instructions only apply if you are installing Zone Alarm for the very first time. Thes

The following instructions only apply if you are installing Zone Alarm for the very first time. These instructions are NOT for the people who already have Zone Alarm installed on their computers, and are upgrading to the latest version.

1. Create a New Folder on your desktop and Rename it to Downloads. By doing this you will have one central location for all programs that you download. When you download any program DO NOT select 'Run', select 'Save' and when you have saved it scan it with an anti-virus program.
I recommend the use of AVG AntiVirus which I have covered in another post.

2. Click Here to download ZoneAlarm. Download it into the folder named Downloads, BUT DO NOT install it until you have followed the instructions below.

3. Once you have downloaded your version of ZoneAlarm to your Desktop Folder, disconnect from the Internet. If you use Cable or DSL Modem, disconnect it and close any other running programs apart from your basic programs to run Windows. This includes the Windows Firewall. To find out
what Applications are running go to Task Manager (Control+Alt+Delete). Look for Applications, make sure there are NO Applications running. If they are, use the End Task Button. To disable the Windows Firewall go to your Control Panel, switch it to Classic View then double click on Windows Firewall and then click the 'Off' button.

4. Go into your Control Panel, on top of the screen you will see Tools, click on it, then another tab will show up and click on Folder Options, in the new panel that opens click on View. Scroll down to where it says Hidden Files and Folders, put a dot or check-mark in the box that says, "Show hidden files and folders", then REMOVE the check mark from the next two boxes that say the following," Hide Extensions for known file types" and "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)". Drop down to bottom
of panel and click Apply. Now go to the top of the panel and click on "Apply to All Folders", click Yes in new window then click OK in Folder Options panel. This way all your folders will show the change. Close the control Panel.

5. Make sure you have completely removed any other vendor's firewall product you were currently using ie: Norton, McAfee etc. Now for those of you who are installing the Zone Alarm Security Suite or Zone Alarm Anti-Virus, the very same applies, make sure you have completely removed any other anti-virus product you were currently using. If you are using AVG Anti-Virus and/or Spybot Search & Destroy you can safely ignore them. If the program has an Uninstall feature please use that, if not go to your Control Panel and select Add/Remove Programs and select each item individually and select Remove. Do NOT reboot if prompted to.

You then need to ensure that there are no Registry keys or Files left behind. Click on Start, then Search or Find, and select Files. Make sure that the location box is set to search your local hard drive (usually C or All Local
Drives. XP users: set Advanced search options to search ALL files and folders! Type in Norton or Symantec etc. then wait for search to complete. If any items show up simply right click and Delete. Then double click MY COMPUTER, double click on C (if that is your main drive) and you will
have a window of Folders open. Locate the Program Files folder and double click to open it and you will then have a list of all of your Program Files. Look for any folder that has your old Firewall or Anti-Virus name on it, right click on the folder and select Delete. Once you have done this, click the Back button at the top locate and and double click on the Windows folder. This will open a panel of all of you Windows Files, scroll down to find the one named Prefetch. Double click it to open then go to the Edit Tab at the top and click on it, scroll down to Select All, left click on it and all of the files will be highlighted. Then go to File (beside Edit) click on it scroll down and select Delete. You will get a pop-up message 'Are you sure you want to send these XXXX items to the Recycle Bin'. Click Yes, this will remove the items out of the Prefetch Folder. Now close the window to return to your desktop. Go to your Recycle Bin, right click and select Empty Recycle Bin.

Now, I will try to explain to you how to find any stray Registry Keys in your Registry. First of all backup your Registry. Go to Start, Run and type in regedit click on OK and the Registry Editor will then open. Go to the top Tabs
and click on File, scroll down until you see Export, left click it and this will open Export Registry File window. Save this file to your desktop and in the File Name box enter Registry Backup File. Click on Save and it should now
be on your desktop. Verify the file is a good copy, in the Registry Editor window click on File, select Import, in new panel where it says 'Look in' select desktop and then click on your saved file then click 'Open'. Once it says it has been read in successfully, you have a good backup.

Now to edit the Registry go to the Edit Tab at the top left click it, scroll down until you see Find, left click
it, another panel will pop up, it will ask you Find What, type in Norton, Symantec, Mcafee or whatever Firewall or Anti-Virus vendor you were using before installing ZoneAlarm. After you have typed the name, make sure that there are checkmarks in all of the boxes - Should be 4 blocks, Keys, Values, Data, and Match Whole String Only - then go back to where you typed in Norton, Symantec, etc then click on 'Find Next'. The search will locate Folders in the left panel and strings in the right pane. Ignore the right pane strings and keys values, look for the highlighted Folder in the left pane, right click on it and select 'Delete', click 'Yes' on pop-up window then hit your F3 keyboard button and it will continue to search the Registry, delete any Folders it finds in the left pane and continue until a pop-up says Finished searching through the registry. Exit the Registry Editor.

6. Now go back to your desktop to where you have downloaded and saved your copy of ZoneAlarm and install it.

7. Let ZoneAlarm configure your Program Settings. The reason for this is that there is a very good possibility
that when you manually install the Program Settings, something may not get properly installed, which may cause major problems with your installation of ZoneAlarm. Later if you decide you do not want a specific program in your Programs Control Panel, then remove it. If it is required, you will get a balloon alert about it allowing or disallowing it. That's your decision. I have always done this and have never had a problem by letting Zone Alarm configure my settings.

8. When the installation is complete, reboot your system and connect back on to the Internet, making sure all your other programs are activated this includes ZoneAlarm and the ones that you had disabled, especially your Cable or DSL Modems. These should all automatically restart after rebooting.

9. Final step..go back to Start > Control Panel and if necessary switch it to Classic View. Locate the folder
named 'Folder Options' and double click it. In the 'View' tab go to Hidden files and folders and click the radio
button 'Do not show hidden files and folders' and place ticks in the following two boxes, 'Hide extensions for known file types' and 'Hide protected operating system files(Recommended)'.
