Someone always springs their bloody birthday on you when you’re at your most skintest, don’t they? It was some bird in the office’s birthday yesterday and I had to nip out at lunch to get her a card. I found this neat little shop with quirky gifts and unusual cards, which I knew would have something this girl, would like. I literally just turned around in this shop and there it was staring at me. A Moomin birthday card! I had to get it basically. I liked Moomins when I was a nipper and so doubtless this girl did too. I mean, who didn’t like them? So I gave her the card and everyone went ga-ga over it. Everyone started talking about which kids tv show they liked best when they were at school. I love reminiscing about school days. Not primary school, but secondary. School was pretty ace. Or, “rad” as we used to say back in the mid ‘90s! All the girls with their rolled up skirts, tight white shirts and brightly coloured teenage bras that you could see under their shirts on a summer day. Obviously not my thing now, but definitely when I was 15 it was very appealing ;)

Anyway, I had to go home and recap over all the St Teeny Cums episodes. It has two of my favourite girls in it, Lolly Badcock and Carmel Moore. To be honest with you, I think it’s probably for the best that the girls I went to school with didn’t look like these girls and wear suspenders otherwise I would never have passed my exams!

Quite sad this story but can you believe she kept so many of them in such a small flat!

Sorry blogging is light this week, have been in Finland and so busy today that I have only just finished my lunch.

I am however enjoying a rather nice organic apple. I have started using an organic box delivery scheme, I just went for the big fruit box, so I now have plenty of apples, oranges, pears, bananas, kiwi fruit, lemons and a melon.

My campaign to eat more fruit is going well in fact I might even need two boxes a week!

Anyway for organic fruit and veg delivery in Stockholm I used Årstiderna, quite literally 'the seasons'. So far so good!

The weather is lovely here, no boat trip this weekend, I do want to go to Skansen though, which is the local zoo, well sort of zoo as they showcase Scandinavian animals. I am looking forward to seeing the Moomins there then ;-)

No chance of any llamas though :-(

A Moomin story with no Moomins? Well, not quite. The family is there, but as a hope, an aim and an absence.A group fetches up at the Moominhouse, each hoping to find something from the family. The family not being there, they instead find themselves in an ad hoc family- one which is not entirely harmonious.

Each of the characters seems self-directed and self-regarding, but through a series of negotiations and awkward situations, they manage to live together. They none of them meet the family, but this seems unimportant by the end.

This books is close in feel to the adult books Sort Of Books have issued recently. Not much happens, but you are still left with a sense of things being worked out.

It is interesting to reflect that this is the last Moomin book Jansson wrote, around the time of her mother's death. I don't know for sure that knowing this affected my reading of it, but I did find it much more reflective and serious than the other books, with perhaps the exception of Moominpappa at Sea.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As noted in an earlier post, I read this story having just read some of Jansson's adult works. During the course of this reading I learned a lot about Jansson, both via the stories and the introductory material.

I do think that the information I picked up- about Jansson's own relationships and the circumstances in which the book was written- affected how I read the story. I think it enriched my reading, but also shaped in a way that my readings of the other Moomin stories had not been. And I now see those stories in a different way as well.

Having just finished A winter book, I decided to read Moominvalley in November. I had not read the latter book before, and in reading the former I learned that Moominvalley in November was Tove Jansson's last children's book, written around the time of her mother's death.

Now a lot of the Moomin books are charged with a sense of longing, of a desire to escape loneliness or embrace solitude and a sense of time passing. But I felt this more strongly in the opening chapters of this book.

This morning I wondered, is this because those feelings are stronger, or because I'm bringing them in with my knowledge of the book's place in the author's life? And how often is our reaction to a book shaped by such knowledge?

This week was quite good. I bought books and participated in mathematics matriculation exam (which I must re-participate in March because I didn't get full points) and I got some birthday present money I'll spend on even more books. There are also English and Geography matriculation exams next week but however I challenged Steel to write 1,000 more words during the that week (Moraaliteoria Challenge 2007) because I can't wait October's Steely Challenge.

New in the bookshelf:

Tove Jansson's The Exploits of Moominpappa in Finnish, the 1st edition

Jude Fisher's Fool's Gold 1: Sorcery Rising in English

Santeri Palin's Elämän kolmio kuoleman syklissä in Finnish, aww

J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings in Swedish, 2.50 €

October 1st will be interesting. Firstly I'll go to NaNo web page and take the participation banner. Then I'm going to start writing SC 07 which is about Baron von Dille, the Investigator.

When I was reading Steel's NaNo blog To create a write-like feel (The famous Script Frenzy 2007 author of The Lemming Conspiracy, the one who got the trailer award for Best Use of Cute Photos of Lemmings – I'm so envious because I didn't get any awards for Best Use of Scary Photos of Sea Snakes), I realized I haven't edited any banners yet for my next NaNo text. Then all I had to do was to create an image with Paint Shop Pro and Microsoft Paint. Because I didn't know what I'll write for NaNo, I had to decide it as well because I needed to know what kind of things to include in the picture, of course. It'll be The Little Folk's Midwinter – I'd like to know am I able to create an atmosphere similar to the books of Moomins by Tove Jansson.

So here it comes:
The Moomins originally made their appearance in Europe in the 1950s but as the 90s rolled around, Japan caught the fever and a television series and a feature length movie were produced. The Nyoro² slither again in January 2007 with a toy figure which features fins and measures 15cm tall. The photo of the hand about to grasp Nyoro-Nyoro in a kung-fu grip may give the wrong impression but NCS' advice is to get your minds out of the gutter.
