La mítica banda británica liderada por el inconfundible Morrisey sacará el próximo día 10 de Junio The Queen Is Dead: a classic under review, un DVD que será algo parecido a un "Making of" a lo grande. El DVD tendrá una duración aproximada de 2 horas, en las que repasarán como se hizo The Queen is Deah, el álbum con más éxito de la banda.

Podremos encontrar la grabación de todas las canciones del disco, tanto de estudio como en directo, entrevistas con los miembros de la banda, productores y biógrafos del grupo e incluso una seria de bonus como un juego interactivo.

El sello Sexy Intellectual junto con Music Video Distributors son los encargados de traérnoslo al mercado. Otra vez nos encontramos con un DVD al que la industria nos tiene acostumbrados, que pretende sacarle más jugo a una banda de renombre. Puede, pero, que en este caso encontremos material interesante, aquellos a los que nos guste realmente The Smiths. Sobretodo por las entrevistas, donde habrá que ver con que nos sorprende esta vez Morrisey.

El próximo 26 de mayo se pondrá a la venta “The Queen Is Dead: A Classic Under Review”, un DVD que contiene material sobre la grabación de dicho disco, entrevistas con los miembros de la banda, sesiones de grabación de los tracks que componen el set list, presentaciones en vivo y más. Son dos horas de duración y en los extras incluye un juego audiovisual interactivo.

Además, aparecerán en el DVD personajes como Tony Wilson, el fallecido propietario de Factory Records, Brett Anderson, vocalista de Suede y Stephen Street, coproductor e ingeniero de sonido del álbum.

Será un excelente aporte a la música, ya que podremos ver el proceso de creación de un magnífico disco de esta banda ícono liderada por el carismático Morrisey.

En gang i tiden spillte jeg Morrisey ganske ofte. Da jeg satte på den igjen våren 2008 fikk jeg en allergisk reaksjon. Jeg har trykkt meg igjennom den spor for spor og finner ingen glede med den, utenom ett lite øyeblikk da jeg ble nostalgisk.

Sun Peaks apparently used to be called Todd Mountain, but now with two additional mountains that have been added over the past years I guess a new name was in order.  So now with three mountains in total, Sun Peaks makes for one hell of a trifecta of alpine awesomeness.  Each peak has it's own unique character and feel, and all three are noticeably higher than any of the other surrounding hills.  A lot of BC ski hills tend to be tucked away on some random hill in a closed-in mountain range, but not Sun Peaks.  Todd mountain is exceptionally taller than the rest of the hills in the area, and when you get off the Burf quad chair at the top you get a cool feeling of looking way down in almost all directions.  That's where you want to be for the big open sweeping alpine bowls and amazing views.

Sundance and Morrisey peaks may be a bit lower, but because the slopes are relatively gentle the chairlifts are still pretty long and there is a lot of variety of terrain on both.  But in comparison to places like Silver Star and Apex the vertical just isn't there.  The majority of runs are quite flat, and the really steep runs are few and far between.  But the glades and cruisers are well placed and you can get a lot of both done in every run.  Sundance has the terrain park (for the win), and Morrisey has a distinct backwoods remote area kind of feel to it.  And the whole place in general seemed quite deserted - considering the long weekend the lift lines were really nothing.

So over all Sun Peaks is great, but I've been spoiled by too much time on Blackcomb and I have really high standards and sometimes expect too much.  For the kind of skiing I've been getting into Blackcomb is still unbeatable in all aspects.  Sun Peaks suffers the same problem I've noticed at many other hills where they seem to greatly exaggerate the difficulty of the runs on the green / blue / black scale.  Greens are always going to be greens, but a lot of the blues should be green and a lot of the blacks should be blue.  When comparing the ratings from one hill to another, someone somewhere is off.  Or maybe Blackcomb just needs to add a triple-black-diamond rating to some of their runs...

Making an appearance in this year's Coachella is Swedish singer/songwriter Jens Lekman.   I've been downloading this guy's tracks for over a year already - I first got into his work when he put out Oh You Are So Silent, Jens.  As he is slated to make an appearance at the SXSW festival in Austin, TX in a couple of days while preparing for his April 25 set,  here's some stuff which I should share about the affable Swede.

Jens Martin Lekman (born February 6, 1981 in Angered, Sweden) is a Swedish pop musician. He has released two albums and several EPs since 2003. His music can be described as guitar-based pop with heavy use of samples and strings; the lyrics are often witty, romantic, and melancholic. His work is often compared to that of Stephin Merritt of the Magnetic Fields, Jonathan Richman, and Morrissey.

Lekman recorded and released much of his material privately from 2000 to 2003 on CD-R. Because one of his songs during this time was entitled "Rocky Dennis' Farewell Song to the Blind Girl", Lekman was mistakenly referred to as Rocky Dennis for a while (the song was actually written from the perspective of the main character of the 1985 film Mask). Lekman says that it was a "mistake": "someone thought that was my real name cause I had a song about him, and then radio picked up on it, and I never had a chance to change it". He put the confusion to rest with his Rocky Dennis in Heaven EP (2004).

His self-released 7" vinyl EP Maple Leaves caused a big stir in 2003, mainly due to sound files circulating on file sharing networks. When the same EP was released on CD by the Swedish independent label Service Records in the autumn, he was already a well-known name. The songs "Maple Leaves" and "Black Cab" were heavily played on Swedish national radio. He soon signed a contract with the American label Secretly Canadian for releases outside of Sweden. Heavy touring and his debut album soon followed.

His first album When I Said I Wanted to Be Your Dog was released in 2004, and consisted of recordings made between 2000 and 2004 (some tracks had been previously released independently by Lekman). The album attracted attention among the alternative music press in both Europe and the US. The song "You Are The Light" was a successful radio hit, and a video received some rotation in the Nordic MTV and ZTV. In Sweden the album reached #6 in the national chart. Lekman was nominated for three Swedish Grammies, three P3 Guld and three Manifest awards, as well as dubbed album of the year by Nöjesguiden.

A concert film shot from Lekman's sold-out show with José González at Göteborg's concert hall in December 2003 was broadcast by Swedish national television two times in 2005. In June 2005, a compilation CD of Jens' first three EPs, with extra tracks, was released as Oh You're So Silent Jens. Lekman also had a track on Secretly Canadian's SC100 compilation, released in April 2007.
His latest album, Night Falls Over Kortedala, was released in October 2007, and appeared on many lists for the best albums of said year.

Live performances by Lekman differs in style. Sometimes he performs alone with only a guitar and a CD player, or doing a capella versions of his songs. Other times, he is accompanied by a choir and string quartet, and he was recently seen on tour with a full band (including horns etc) consisting of all women musicians, dressed in white 60s dresses.

If I do recall, "Oh You Are..." centrepiece "Maple Leaves" brings into mind a crafty outtake from The Go! Team's Thunder Lightning Strike CD.  Pinching the dramatic strings from The Mamas & The Papas' version of "Do You Wanna Dance", Jens crafts a haunting ballad of unrequited love set amidst an enduring symbol of autumn.  Check out this crackin' live version (taken from a concert in Sao Paulo, Brazil) with  accordion  accompaniment.

One gem from his current Night Falls over Kortedala CD, "Sippin' on Sweet Nectar" has this brassy feel underpinned by retro-sounding congas that bring to mind the sheen of Philadelphia soul.  On that arrangement,  Mr. L reminisces over yet another lost love...

Is this man a genius...or maybe not?   Sure, his way with melancholy, often self-deprecating lyrics brings Morrissey in mind, but he proves to be his own person.  With each album release, he never fails to surprise us with his wry yet witty takes on love, fame and fortune.

Listo. Ya está. Ya vimos a casi todos. El sábado 15 Dylan, y yo pensaba que ya estaba hecho por el año!! Pero no, el hombre de los labios finitos y grandes gafas pisará argentina por primera vez (bah, quizás algún día haya venido a cazar jabalises de puro gurka pero no creo viste). Es algo realmente de no creer… mi hermana me mandó un mensaje el sábado y me asesinó la mente. Qué lindo. Ya vimos a Ian Brown, a Morrisey. Ya vimos a New Order. Yo qué sé, sí, faltan varios. Pero Jarvis? Oh my god!

Entonces, para homenajearlo propiamente y no caer en la típica enumeración de cositas de su vida, les ofrecemos un humilde top five del muchacho (nuestro propio top, guiado a criterio, si no están de acuerdo, protestar o proponer tá bien).

Top Five jarviscockeriano:

1- Dishes.

Tristeza nao tem fin, pareciera. Uno se pone empático, no con Jarvis, sino con los sentimientos expresados en la canción. Es la historia de un tal JC que dice que no es Jesús, pero comparten iniciales: Jesus Christ (JC, por sus siglas en inglés: je, siempre quise poner eso). Y le gustaría convertir agua en vino pero no, no puede, tiene que quedarse en su casa a lavar los platos. En fin, un hombre común y corriente al que le gustaría ser mucho más de lo que es. ¿O un lamento de un JC que en la vida real no puede lavar los platos porque está convirtiendo el agua en vino? Un hombre que es “sólo un hombre, pero hace lo que puede para ayudarte? We don´t know y no queremos tampoco, arropados en la tristeza más linda que haya escuchando esa voz rezando “And I'm not worried that I will never touch the stars cos stars belong up in heaven and the earth is where we are…” Y ese momento, único, monstruoso, irrepetible (ya se habló en estas páginas de eso), cuando Jarvis tira su mejor “Oh, yeah” y le da pie a ese riff del que ya no me quedan adjetivos para describir.

2- Common People.

Sí, no es un hit. Es EL hit. Una de las canciones más hiteras de la historia del hit. La elección más obvia. Pero es el primer amor. Otra vez el susurro hot de Jarvis (Ahora es “Are you sure”) en unas de esas canciones proletarias inglesas con las que no podemos no simpatizar y empatizar más allá de las obvias diferencias. El chico trabajador del puerto y un amor de interclases con chica importada y llena de money. Pero más importante, la manera en que este disco llegó a mí: iba caminando un sábado a la noche por La Plata hace muchos años y veo al Cosca, baterista de Venenosos (ahora en Norma) tirar una bocha de cds unidos por un cable, subirse a un auto e irse. Uno de esos era Different Class. Tenía rayados Mis-Shapes y Pencil Skirt, por lo q mi escucha arrancó directly con Common People. Así que listo. Y bueno. Ahora decime la verdad ¿no me envidiás un poco por cómo conocí a tu banda favorita?

3- From a to i.

Iba a arrancar con “Heavy weather”, que es una preciosura. Después me pasé a “Baby is coming back to me”, que es otra gemita. Pero al final me decidí por “From a to i” por dos razones. La primera es que apenas salió el tema, mi amigo y coblogger me lo mandó. La segunda es su letra, un poco más introspectiva y oscura que el resto del disco. Si “Heavy weather” es un temazo con una lírica bastante obvia, por decirle de alguna manera, donde la metáfora es sencilla y directa y donde a la mañana era verano pero a la tarde se pudre todo, donde no me importa que llueva, si total ya estoy listo. En cambio, “From a to i”, sin llegar a esas brillantes parrafadas de “Different Class” (ya veremos más adelante), tiene una cierta lógica pulpiana, densidad poética y algunas frases para la historia, como “So like the Roman Empire fell away – let me tell you; we are going the same way” y “They want our way of life” – well, they can take mine any time they like.” Y, además, poco tiene para envidiarle a las mejores melodías de Pulp.

4- I Spy.

De este tema hablaba concretamente en el voto anterior. Lucidez, exuberancia e hipérbole para escribir un tema de, no sé, 600 palabras más o menos, cantarlo con, no sé, 5, 6 cambios de ritmo diferentes: el susurro del comienzo, el grito punkie de cuando planta sus principios de voyeur, la bajada de cambio para darle espacio a un fraseo pop. En fin. Sería el tema perfecto de Pulp si Pulp no hubiera sacado “This is Hardcore”. Un tema para que quienes hacen de la exuberancia un estilo (aprendan algunos rappers). No te podés acordar de TODO eso Jarvis, no te podés. Y sin embargo te acordás. Y al final decís “Yo espío para cambiar el mundo”. Al menos, nos cambiaste varias cosas a nosotros. Eso sí.

5- Sylvia.

Una historia que parece pertenecer al Far West. Una historia triste (Jarvis habla sobre una chica con mucha mala suerte, una que tiene un papá que está de novio con una chica “menor que ella”, que no la ve hace rato y que sale con un punto que mucha bolilla no le da pero que la tiene como trofeo porque Sylvia es linda, muy linda y con una belleza “que fue su único crimen”). Decía, una historia sobre una chica que tenía todo para pasarla bien en este mundo, que “se merece lo mejor” pero que no lo obtiene. Una canción con un estribillo perfecto y pegadizo (un estribillo patrón, podría decirse). Un pequeño diamante tan triste y poco esperanzador, que lo único que nos pone contentos es esa melodía sencilla y bella.
