We had the privilige to have the ELC as our guests in the Music Department for a couple of days, before their performances in the Jyväskylä Summer Arts Festival and the Kaustinen Folk Music Festival.

[wp_caption id="attachment_85" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Choir movement"][/wp_caption]

During these two days, we had a workshop where a group of Finns "joined" the choir and learned some of their songs and choreographies. Also, we recorded the whole thing for research purposes. Not only that, we took motion capture of the movements. This amazing and unique data set will be analysed in the coming months (there really is a LOT of data). We collected two kinds of motion capture data - group synchronisation data and dance movement data. In the group sync sessions, we had a larger number of people (8 or 9) wearing just a couple of markers each.

[wp_caption id="attachment_89" align="alignnone" width="197" caption="Marker set for group synchronisation measurements"][/wp_caption]

In collecting the dance movement data, we used a full-body marker set, and actually tracked two people at the same time, doing the choir movements together.

[wp_caption id="attachment_77" align="alignnone" width="213" caption="Full marker sets"][/wp_caption]

Both these sessions were actual choir singing and performance - the rest of the choir was in the lab, around the motion capture area and all performances we tracked were thus as close to authentic as you can get in a motion capture lab.

About Leslie's work

Leslie's work with Laban Movement Analysis encompasses three main areas:

Laban for Animators: the aesthetic foundation of nonverbal communication in the art form of animation, including aesthetic guidelines for creating believable, expressive animated characters, and style analysis of animated movement.

Visualization of LMA theories through the creation of 3D computer animated imagery. Pedagogically, these theories are demonstrated and experienced through dance-movement and the use of movement notation symbols. Visualization of movement theory contributes a new visual perception of LMA concepts and new pedagogical methods.

Creation of experimental animated film, using traditional and digital media, centering on the use of LMA as a creative tool for the aesthetic exploration of movement dynamics, rhythmic phrasing and pattern.

Courses and consulting work

Leslie incorporates LMA into her 3D Character Animation and related courses in the full time Animation BFA degree program at Emily Carr University of Art & Design. Course assignments are based on LMA principles, and feedback to students is given through the lens of LMA-based observation and description. Leslie has given Laban for Animators workshops at a variety of computer game studios, which provide a broad overview of the LMA system, emphasizing how it can be applied to animation through designing a Movement Signature for animated characters, and through coaching motion-capture talent to achieve specific movement qualities.

Recent publications

Leslie is currently developing a book proposal for Laban for Animators. The following recent publications represent the scope of her current work:

In Making Pictures Move, we saw how classical animation techniques could be used to bring a series of fixed images to life, and as a result give an impression of animated movement.

We also saw how real movement could be captured using photography, as Eadweard Muybridge's freeze frame photographs of a galloping horse demonstrated.

Making animated characters move in a realistic way is still a major challenge to animators today. Whilst many animators do still work in a traditional way - watching themselves in a mirror, for example, to see how to piece together a series of movements - it is now increasingly likely that big-budget productions will use motion capture ("mo-cap") techniques to film the motion of actors performing a particular movement or series of movements, and then used this captured movements to bring alive a digital character, much like a puppeteer might bring alive a wooden puppet.

How so? Watch this movie clip showing how motion capture can be used put the human inside a digital puppet!

You may have noticed the unusual suit that the actor was wearing. The marks on the suit are high contrast areas that a computer can detect easily. By mapping different points on the filmed image of the suit with corresponding points on the digital avatar that we wish to animate, we can use filmed movements to drive the movements of the animated character.

Many motion capture techniques actually use pointwise markers on the motion capture suit. That is, individual markers are place at different points on the suit, often the joints. The motion of the person's joints can then be matched to the joints of the digital avatar.

Another approach to motion capture is described in this research video on Practical Motion Capture in Everyday Surroundings (described in this paper in SIGGRPH 207).

Motion capture is widely used in films that make heavy use of CGI - computer generated imagery - as well as games. However, whereas Hollywood may use motion capture to create animated movement that is as realistic as possible, in games the actor may actually be required to perform 'stylised' actions that fit in with the genre of the game.

For example, here is an interview with one of the motion capture artists who worked on the Conan the Barbarian game: Age of Conan Site Tour Pt. 1 - Motion Capture.

If you watched the Conan movie clip, you may have picked up on the reference to motion capture being used with horses. The techniques used are certainly several steps on from anything Eadweard Muybridge attempted to do, as this brief post on the MTV Multiplayer blog suggests: A Horse Covered in Ping Pong Balls — The ‘Age of Conan’ Mo-Cap Shoot.

This was taken last Christmas when Jasper FINALLY got his skateboard. He has been wanting to have this for some time but I resisted. The reason? This toy comes along with "WARNING: THE USE OF THIS MAY RESULT TO INJURIES". I'm not ready for that... Part of me will never be ready to let go but he's 14 yrs old now and I should.... slowly I am.

It's amazing how time flies, he used to be this cuddly child I chase around the house and now he's a teenager. He's slowly finding his identity and I hope we have prepared him for the world. No doubt he'll do good but still I can't help but think if he has maximized his potential. I guess any parent would want to see their child/children make the best of life... with no injuries... :-)

Despite impressing everyone last year with Yamadonga, NTR had people talking about his drastic weigh

Despite impressing everyone last year with Yamadonga, NTR had people talking about his drastic weight loss and that it was a bit too much - he's lost his charm etc. Now that one has gotten used to him in that avatar, his newest offering Kantri actually is the first film of his which you can watch without wondering if he is too fat or too thin. Kantri is a regular formula film - albeit shot better than others in this genre with a nice plot twist (inspired from a movie of course!) to make you think that you've seen something different from the ordinary.

Kranti aka Kantri (NTR) is a vagabond who joins a gang of baddies headed by PR (Prakash Raj). Now the movie begins with a young PR cheating and killing some folks for money, so you can guess there has to be some link between Kranti and PR. There are quite a bunch of baddies here (Ashish Vidhyarthi, Murli Sharma, Sayaji Shinde) who exist just to give a reason for the fight sequences. In between there are some nice comic moments - Krishna Bhagwan's thread was the best of them all. Ali and Sunil are also good in a few scenes. Raghubabu as usual gets the same role as the villain's comic sidekick and he is good too.

This film seems to have been made as a conscious attempt increase NTR's audience base. If you go in expecting a regular NTR flick you'll come out impressed as this is quite a stylized upgrade to the stuff he's been doing until now. There are also some lines which explicitly speak about "class"ifying him to put across the point. Since this film is about NTR he does everything expected of him in style. The lengthy dialogues (with references to taathaiyya of course!), the fights and most importantly the dances. This time the moves which leave you wonderstruck are in the songs "Vayassunami" (reused from Vijay's Pokkiri) and "I go crazy". The only thing good about Hansika and Tanisha are that they aren't hanging around for too long. Mani Sharma's tunes are good and all the songs are nicely picturized. Owing to the "class"ification the fights also seem a bit restrained (in terms of flying people) when compared to other flicks. Meher Ramesh (quite a popular Kannada film director) makes a neat debut.

Finally, if you are a fan of NTR, Kantri is the summer-special treat you've been waiting for....if you aren't then atleast you won't crib about him for once.

Let's Rock!

Wow, glad we're showing up Wednesday night. Freezing temperatures on Tuesday. And I don't think a spoiled, tropical born, LA raised, brown person has the genetics to call that comfortable. But I'm not complaining! I'm just trying to prepare myself...

For wearing a super tight spandex suit that has Canadian reflective balls on it. Balls all over me. It'll be so cold there, it would be hard to "best represent" myself in a spandex suit... but whatever... I'm not complaining! I get to play "guns" just like I was a kid. Good thing they don't record the sound effects I make when shooting and dying. Otherwise you'd hear, "pew! pew! pew!" when I'm shooting a big gun, or a Super Street Fighter "OOOH-AAHH,ooh-aahh!" when I die. Apparently, I can't do sound effects.

But it's so much fun! I'm really looking forward to the great food (poutine and silky smooth kit-kats), great beer (burr), and feeling very "OK." (ooookaaaay!)

I might want to pay to stay till Sunday...we'll see what the weather permits.

Some pics from my last trip...

Clean,

and green.

Mmm poutine. Heard it was a must have. It is. Fries covered in spiced gravy, topped with melting cheese curd. I can't wait to put it in my mouth. (What? That's where it goes.) There is no such thing as eating healthy on a vacation for me. It's a vacation! (kinda) And my favorite thing to do is eat!

The Interactive Multimedia blog has postings about new media including code and tutorials primarily in Adobe Flash. There are also events and pictures that relate to the Sheridan Interactive Multimedia one year post grad program where I teach.

Currently pictured on the front are some of the older works. An artist is using a touch screen wall display to draw with Mike Balder's voice sensitive drawing application built in Flash. As she (or collaborators) make louder noises, the brush strokes get fatter or depending on the setting, more opaque. This picture is from the Interactive Interactive show. The picture on the right shows a music application by Kim Cullion that captures the users gesture motion with a $10 web cam. The Motion Cursor classes I made create a motion cursor which can be used to play notes on a musical staff.

Creating virtual environment, particularly when involving game engine, demands certain elements that

Creating virtual environment, particularly when involving game engine, demands certain elements that other type of visualization may not had covered. We usually see architecture and urban scale visualization with stunning static environments : buildings, landscape, atmosphere. Or animated (not with kinematic) objects such as vehicle, plane, ship and others. Very few example of project (not mention big budget or 'pixar'-scale animation studio) present human or people with its natural movement and motion. With exception of pay-3D animated human model in internet nowadays, to incorporating human with its natural movement in virtual environment is challenging effort which involving both skill and techniques in a field so-called : rigging.
There are several techniques of making human/ character model become 'alive'. Both on industry-motion picture/game related and academia-computer science related (not architecture related :), human motion is a delicate field to simulate. Most of the technique basically deal with rigging system. Hypothetically, we can create any motion of our 3D meshes by creating several motion with the bone/rig system. Here, the bone (or armature in Blender) must be the parent of our meshes, so any change (location, rotation, dimension) of the bone have effect on our meshes. This is the basic postulate of rigging. Of course this concept is far from practical convenience. Seriously. Unless you are happy (and still feels healthy) to spend million of hours to select - animate - coordinate every pixel of your meshes on every frame to accomplish maybe not even perfect a 'walking cycle' animation. How you can mimic and reproducing human kinematic with mouse button? nearly impossible, maybe not if you are one of the Pixar guy.:-) Even a simple single step of your model require hundred hour of irritating attempts.
Here come another technique, called motion capture. Nearly most of animated motion picture used this technique in order to grasp human motion as accurate as possible. Motion capture basically is series of data of every movement on every certain point of bone hierarchy of particular recorded real model movement. As such, in this concept, we can produce near realistic human motion because we record certain points on real person's movement. Very breakthrough, unless The Matrix would've not so appealing though. Some academic labs produce this system as well as industry (leader : Biovision). However, since it is a data, it is not equipped with meshes. It's just points of series coordinates - even further, just animated bones. Realistic one. Next challenge is, how we can utilize this data to our 3D model? Important question and be careful of what you wished for. :-) Many of free mocap data available on the net from academias and industries. We can experiment with our own model.
As for the basic rigging technique - with some different approach, we must coordinate our rig-less or bone-less meshes with this pre-animated bones. Most of any 3D modeler have ability to import mocap data. (Yippee, Blender 2.45 has flawless .bvh import script). The different is now we deal with pre-animated bone with preconfigure keyframe according to their animation : walk, run, jump. etc.
Of course we are not going to rematching our mesh and bones or rigging on every frame. It is just not effective way. (pain in the a@#). But still, rigging technique is necessary and become more important in several keys :
1.more detail and accurate coordination of joints location between our model and bones is needed.
2.our model must have the same size with the bones. Not just overall size but every dimension of the body parts (including its clothes if available) should with the same size with the bones.
3.from above points, we must have knowledge about human anatomy. Yeah right, like I have not enough for learning to.
Once we have sculpted our model to became exactly the same pose with the mocap's bone on its rest-position (frame=1) (dimension, location, rotation), maybe we can rig our meshes and maybe we get our expected result.
I said maybe because I am now experimenting among many other parameter that may cause our model become fubar (f*@#&p barely recognize..hihihi).
Lesson learned : IMHO rigging is easy concept to understand but very time and effort consuming.

What is "motion capture" you might ask? well, it is basically taking Digitally recorded movements and using that information to Create animated character models. in film-making this is referred to as "performance Capture." If you have seen the new movie "Beowulf" or "The Polar Express" these movies make use of the technology that is performance capture.

A more technical explanation can be found HERE

It appears to me that this technology is either loved or hated...

While there are obviously many benefits of using this technique, (virtual reality, editing abilities, the possibilities are endless) I personally don't think the technology is quite there yet. Watching the previously mentioned films, the animated actors just don't appear realistic enough. their eyes are too vacant and just dont look "real." When rendered objects in which become very close to looking real, the human eye becomes more discerning and things "appear" to be even more fake than less-real animation. I will do some research on that and blog on it some time in the future.

Anyways, While I think this technology is great and will be amazing in the future, we will have to wait for hardware and processing power to catch up before it truely becomes "lifelike."
