Ligaram a jukebox. Depois dessa, uns sussurros conhecidos 'I know your only doing what comes naturally'. The Long Blondes, claro.

We are massive Sinatra fans in this house, we play the tunes, watch the DVD and occasionally even sport the kinky boots.
Apparently though there was another member of the Sinatra family in the music biz , Nancy’s dad Frank, who had a hit or two in the fifties.

There are some who have you believe his voice was legendary – some dork called him the voice of the twentieth century – but I feel he lacked warmth, passion and most of all believability.

When he sang You Make Me Feel So Young, he was probably harking back to the glory days just before his bus pass arrived. And as for Fly Me To The Moon, well he instilled that tune with so much passion that he would be lucky if he got beyond Slough.

No matter though, for in the late '60s, he did make one album in which those dulcet tones seemed to find its voice and that’s Watertown.
Conceived by crack song writing team, Jake Holmes and Bob Gaudio, who were also responsible for the Four Seasons masterpiece (no, really) Genuine Imitation Life Gazette, Watertown is a concept album of sorts in which the narrator, that’s Frank, tells the tale of how he’s getting on with his life now that his missus has left him and his two boys to try and make it as a film star.

Like many so called easy listening albums, Watertown is a harrowing experience, mainly because songs like Michael and Peter (‘Michael is you, he has your eyes’) are shot through with self-resignation and sadness of a middle aged fella who realises his life is pretty much over now that his one true love has gone.
Best of all is For A While, a stunning lament for the women he still loves, but doesn’t love him, in which our narrator temporarily forgets his sad life.
Not only are the songs magical, and the sweeping orchestral arrangements that underpin the vocalist both beautiful and subtle, but Sinatra really does immerse himself in the character and in many respect delivers the most passionate vocal performance of his career.

If you buy one Sinatra CD, make it Nancy’s Greatest Hits, perhaps the ultimate groovy '60s pop album. But if you get up to 12 Sinatra albums, pass on Nancy in London and give her dad’s masterpiece a listen.

[caption id="attachment_511" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Bromheads Jacket"][/caption]

Last night was the commencement of gig-season in Oxford. After the summer lull and a financial lull, I have once more been able to secure two month's worth of sufficient giggage due to a flyering job for the venue. I have my own thoughts on this (mainly paper-wastage guilt but also due to the fact that no one wants leaflets) but it does seem to get me onto guest lists for Carling Academy venues, which I am thoroughly exploiting.

Thus the first gig of the season was the long haired guitar thrashing trio that is Bromheads Jacket. I managed to drag two friends along with me and between us we had pictured them as a guilty pleasure; fairly generic indie dressed in uniform skinny jeans and waistcoats with carefully shaggy hair. The frontman sounds like a male Kate Nash, if that helps.

But we were in for quite a surprise. First of all, the room was a complete sausage-fest, not to use too crude a term. And not the usual Monday night indie crowd either, but what turned out to be a group of laddy type lads following the tour - they had beards and everything. And so raucous! They heckled throughout.

The second surprise was that Bromheads Jacket are simply not an indie band, despite the fact that they sound like an indie band. On their Myspace page they describe themselves as punk rock, but unfortunately for them and their potential fans, they come across as 'indie wank.' Not to use too crude a term. They came on in ripped jeans and with rock-star style straggly hair (perhaps this is the inspiration behind the 'Bromhead' element of their name) and immediately apologised for being late, as when they had gone to see Rage Against the Machine the band had come out an hour late without apologising and they didn't like that. This was rather touching, especially since there were only 40 people in the audience, and half of them seemed to be the frontman's cousin's friends.

[caption id="attachment_512" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Impressive drummer"][/caption]

They started with a few new numbers, Speaker Box and Don't Leave, which were incredibly guitar-thrashy and rock like considering the things I had heard like What if's maybe's and Poppy Bird come across like something Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong could have written on an off-day. They bashed around the stage, long hair flying everywhere - the drummer to the extent that it looked like he was hitting his head with the drumsticks instead of the drums. But it was very good. The crowd weren't the dancing type (they were too busy punching each other in the arm and crumpling beer cups) but they did shout all the words along. Bromheads have been coming to Oxford for a while, it seemed, and they had a whinge about the credit crunch and consequently the rising prices of food on the Cowley Road.

They also played two cover versions, both of which worked extremely well if they were a little hard to recognise. The first was perhaps a stock cover version for most musicians and/or kareoke artists - Nancy Sinatra's These Boots are Made for Walking. The second perhaps better, or at least won more points for originality in a cover version; Mike Skinner's When You wasn't Famous. It went down a treat and the suspiciously young looking boy next to me in the crowd was for one song unable to mouth the lyrics in the way that teenage boys do, because they're busy being too cool to dance.

As the band were unable to employ a staff to tune their instruments, gaps between pairs of songs were filled with credit-crunch related banter while they re-tuned, which proved entertaining. Due to the tiny size of the gig I was able to recommend them away from the expensive organic burger restaurant (I may be the millionth person in the U.K. to say this - and the hundred millionth to read it in the Guardian - but what happened to normal burgers?) and over to the more economically appreciable Spice Village at the tatty end of Cowley Road.

After the gig ended the band were in the crowd, or what was left of it, signing things and having a chat, so we went over to get a post-it signed with eyeliner (in the unlikely event that they become famous and it might be worth something on Ebay in these credit crunchy times) and congratulate them on not living up to our expectations of indie wank. The frontman took this gracefully and was in fact very friendly, talking about their tour until we were ushered out by security.

Overall it was a good start to gig-season, and I am able to enjoy it more now I don't have to pay entrance fees and suffer from franchise guilt now the Zodiac club has been turned into a Carling Academy venue. I think Bromheads Jacket deserve a second chance, or at least a live recording, as their first few albums are really quite deceiving.

I fell in love with Nancy Sinatra sometime in 1966. I saw her on a Hullabaloo TV show appearance where she did ‘These Boots Are Made For Walking’ with a bevy of mini-skirted, go-go booted young ladies and it was love at first sight. My older brother bought her LPs and she appeared on lots of TV shows and films. She helped define the ‘look’ of the mid-sixties (mini skirts & go-go boots). And hell, she’s the Chairman of the Board’s daughter and she made a movie with Elvis.

You could spend your whole life listening to cover versions of Cher’s song “Bang, Bang (My B

You could spend your whole life listening to cover versions of Cher's song “Bang, Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)” on YouTube – or at least one evening. Over the years Cher's original was overtaken by Nancy Sinatra's version with the haunting guitar played by Billy Strange, which made the song immortal. Besides Nancy Sinatra's version of “Bang, Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)” and countless other versions, there were also many covers sung in foreign languages.

From all the non-English versions I stumbled upon, I've chosen three sung by European singers, who share several things: they all have pseudonyms ending on the same letter, sing in several languages, acted in movies and had very successful and long careers. I'm speaking of Sheila, Dalida and Mina.

Dalida's and Mina's versions are sung in Italian, Sheila's in French. The videos were probably shot for TV shows, they're all playbacks. Sheila's and Dalida's videos interestingly use the same footage of a girl and a boy who has a toy gun. Listen in Mina's video to how different her voice sounds when she sings "bang, bang”, there's much more reverb. And here's the question of the day: How many guitar players can you count in Mina's version? Have fun.

Sheila (1966)

French singer Sheila was born in 1945. Her real name is Annie Chancel. She was very popular in France and many other European countries during the nineteen-sixties and nineteen-seventies. Her popularity was so huge, that her name was used for a chain of clothing shops and for beauty products. She sang in several languages and was successful all over Europe. In the late seventies she became a disco star. Her disco hit “Spacer” was produced by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards of the US funk group Chic. Sheila is still performing and recording.

Dalida (1966)

Dalida (1933-1987), real name Yolanda Christina Gigliotti, was a French singer of Italian ancestry who grew up in Egypt. She sang not only in French but also in Arabian, Italian, German and English. She started her career in 1956 at a singing contest in Paris, where she was discovered. From her first record release on she had an endless string of hit records in different styles of music all over the World. Her success in the music business was overshadowed by many private tragedies. She killed herself with an overdose of sleeping pills.

Mina (1967)

Mina, born in 1940, real name Anna Maria Mazzini, is an Italian singer. She sings in French, Spanish, Turkish, German and Japanese. She was discovered at a singing contest in 1958. During the nineteen-sixties and nineteen-seventies she was very successful in Italy and other European countries. Her regular performances on Italian television very much added to her huge success. In 1978 she stopped performing live, but kept on recording.

I was five and he was six
We rode on horses made of sticks
He wore black and I wore white
He would always win the fight

Bang bang, he shot me down
Bang bang, I hit the ground
Bang bang, that awful sound
Bang bang, my baby shot me down.

Seasons came and changed the time
When I grew up, I called him mine
He would always laugh and say
"Remember when we used to play?"

Bang bang, I shot you down
Bang bang, you hit the ground
Bang bang, that awful sound
Bang bang, I used to shoot you down.

Music played, and people sang
Just for me, the church bells rang.

Now he's gone, I don't know why
And till this day, sometimes I cry
He didn't even say goodbye
He didn't take the time to lie.

Bang bang, he shot me down
Bang bang, I hit the ground
Bang bang, that awful sound
Bang bang, my baby shot me down...

Not long ago my youngest son moved into his own apartment but not without first borrowing some DVDs as the cable company informed him it would be at least a week before they could stop by and install his cable for television. As he was going through our DVDs he brought in the movie SPEEDWAY starring Elvis Presley and Nancy Sinatra and asked why it was still sealed and unopened after I explained I bought it a couple years ago for $4.99. He also asked why I would want that movie as even a 25-year-old knows that the majority of Elvis films aren’t….well, they just aren’t that good.

There were several reasons to purchase SPEEDWAY. I saw the movie in the Orr Theatre in Orrville, OH back when it was released (released on June 12, 1968) and it holds nostalgia for me. It’s also a racing movie for crying out loud and features such legendary NASCAR drivers like Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough, Tiny Lund (those three I have met each at least once including having dinner with Cale), Buddy Baker, Dick Hutcherson and Roy Mayne.

Besides Elvis and Nancy Sinatra the cast also included Bill Bixby, Gale Gordon and Carl Ballentine and William Schallert.

(Sonny & Cher were offered the script first before landing in Col. Parker’s lap.)

The racing scenes were shot at Lowe’s Motor Speedway (I have been there several times) in Charlotte, NC and Riverside International Raceway in Riverside, CA.

You know the plot, Elvis is a race car driver and Bixby is his manager who squanders all the money and fails to pay the IRS. The IRS sends an agent (Nancy Sinatra) to investigate and recoup their money and insanity and hi jinx ensues with some forgettable Elvis tunes.

And then the wife interjected the history lesson I was giving my son.

“Tell him the real reason you bought that DVD!”

OK, OK…. It has Nancy Sinatra in it. N-A-N-C-Y S-I-N-A-T-R-A!

In miniskirts!

And go-go boots!

‘Nuff said!

Soooo- my husband and I have this sort complete ‘help-yourself’ sort of openness…

Soooo- my husband and I have this sort complete 'help-yourself' sort of openness... Sort of a policy where we are free to read each other's email, look into each other's phones... You know, no little secret nooks and crannies of our lives. Works for us.. usually. I mean, we are both paranoid for different reasons. He seems to have some sort of pathological issue with my exes (the ones I have zero contact with) and a few former friends and likes to know that they are in no way in the picture that is our cozy little life. That is fair, they are psycho, after all.

Me? My issue? Well-hmmm. In most previous relationships I ended up learning at some point that I was not the sole recipient of my then boyfriend's affections. Eventually a conversation like this would occur: me:"My brother saw you with some girl at a bar the other night". Guilty party: "your brother is a jerk". Or something like this: me: "a woman called here claiming to be your wife. She wants to know whose number this is that you are always calling her from". Guilty party: "Yeah, its not like that.....".

Yeah.

So-- I learned to start being a little proactive in my means of discovery. I learned to do things I did not feel good about. I opened little folded up pieces of paper that just happened to fall out of jacket pockets. I did reverse directories on a lot of incoming calls, I looked at receipts... But that was all years ago in what seems like another life. Some of my little habits have carried over.

It started innocently enough. I went into my husband's email account to open (and pay) and electronic bill. I happened to notice that all of his Facebook notifications seem to be telling him that he has messages from people who happen to be female. I couldn't help myself. I had to read them. I had to read ALL of them. I had to read ALL of them at 4:00 in the morning. 99% were of no interest. "Remember that time in highschool we all went to" blah blah blah from happily married mom of three from his graduating class. "How's the fam? My job is going well" and on like that from former coworker I have met (I also happened to meet her fiance as well). But messages from one person were a little more interesting. One started like this: "I was going to invite you to be my friend but I didn't want to anger your woman". ???? What the hell? Another message from the same 'suspect': "Is that your favorite movie (referring to his profile) because it reminds you of me?". Hmmm.

Next step (after marking messages as 'unread'): Read his replies. Nothing there. Answers like 'I work at a bank" or "No". Hmmm. I decide to check the history on my computer (it got bad, right?). We are sharing a computer these days. Where has he been? Why the man has been to the most boring sites ever. Apparently he was looking at how to hack gadgets and make them serve as other gadgets. Nothing there.

I had no choice but to ask him (thus admitting my snooping). "Who is that girl? What does she mean about angering me? Did you date?". Answer? "Some girl I knew in law school". "She was friends with..". "no we never dated, frankly I had a hard time even studying with her- she has one of those personalities, you know... obnoxious?" Well. So there you have it. His time is all spent with me or at work. His phone shows only calls to me and his family. His track record? Impeccable. I know this because he did not so much as hit on me until he and his girlfriend were officially over (the very week that was formally established, I believe) even though they were clearly on the outs. His emails? Not remotely amorous towards anyone. His answer? Plausible. That leaves me sort of feeling like a crazy jerk. Funny thing? He was neither upset nor surprised that I did all this investigation. He seemed annoyed that he had to explain who this lady was, but not really overly so. He didn't go into one of those guilty over-explanations I experienced years ago ('She is just a friend, you believe me? You gotta believe me. You believe me?). Not to mention this person lives states and states away.

Funny? Maybe. I guess the only person who was hurt by my little quest for information was me. I mean, he has nothing to worry about. I am the one who imagined a million scenarios where this woman was some long lost love coming to reclaim the only person she ever cared for....

Maybe we shouldn't read each other's email at odd hours. I remember once he had a bad experience reading one of mine. I expressed some sort of (fake, but he wouldn't have guessed it) heart-felt concern for one of my exes and his pathetic plight in life. I was really just making conversation with a friend- it wasn't an email to him or anything, just a sort of general statement within a conversation. He kept quiet about it for a while until he just burst into questioning about this person one day.

So, our open forum policy. Does it really create peace of mind? Well, maybe it does. I mean, even though the snooping aroused the suspicion it also helped verify that my suspicion was wrong. Maybe I should just feel at ease knowing that if I want to look I can and leave it at that.

I know some people would read this and feel like we invade each other's privacy to a terrible extent. I tell you that that happens to be no crime in this relationship. We are sort of all up in each other's everything and have never needed much space. Its how we are. The real crime was the fact that I immediately vilified him in my mind based on such an inconclusive piece of evidence.

Thoughts?
