Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog is so open and self analyzing that now it's exclusively available on iTunes, now. The 3 acts of the web-isodes were free to view for a limited time on their site. The digi-grass roots project has become fruitful and plans on releasing a DVD and Soundtrack soon :) The DoctorHorrible.net fan site has the scoop, along with a podcast to keep you up to date with the latest.

"For 'Buffy' fans, "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" is similar to the famous 'Once More With Feeling' musical episode, exploring familiar Whedon territory with some favourite Whedon stars: Nathon Fillion from 'Firefly', Felicia Day also from the last series of 'Buffy', plus Neil Patrick Harris and cameos galore: is the good guy good, is the hero the heroine with a day-job, and does the bad guy *want* to be horrible? Lots of fun, with some good music and clever, thoughtful lyrics and some surprising performances; you start believing! I lol'd at the groupies and the baddies, and stay around for the credits." ~ dubyah1

Well I luv the witty social, story, the cleaver music... and how hot is Neil Patrick Harris!?. Doogie Howser M.D. has grown-up to become Dr. Horrible. Still full of thoughtful introspection, but with a grander eye on saving lives. Rolls that have many layers that cause us to look deeper into the state of ourselves with a sense of humor. hehehe. I recommend that you Click it Out!

A little piece of web junk to tide over How I Met Your Mother fans until the new season: Neil Patrick Harris as the "shoe fairy" on a future episode of Sesame Street, via YouTube.

I'm wrapping up a busy week, but in the upcoming days on Mentos and Manatees, we'll get caught up onthe Summer Movie Suicide Mission with reviews of Wanted, Meet Dave, Mamma Mia!, and The Dark Knight. Plus, we'll take a look at the outstanding new HBO mini Generation Kill, and see what's up with the Madison Avenue crowd on the new season of Mad Men.

Thanks for the huge response to the movie list this week. I'd like to make Let's Play a Game a regular feature. Any suggestions for tedious list making exercises are more than welcome. Now let's all have a nice weekend.

You can't blame the fans. Joss Whedon's latest groundbreaking project is, after all, called Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. It's right there in the name. And when Joss speaks, the fans listen. And so from the deepest heart of the deepest fandom comes Wonderflonium, a site where Dr. Horrible lovers can post music videos, in-world tributes, and yes, vids of themselves singing along to the web musical's infectious soundtrack.

The good news is, there seems to be a natural overlap between the Whedon-nerd and musical-theatre-nerd talent pools. So much of the singing is pretty good. (Keep an eye out for an all-too-short contribution from a certain monkey, who is my favorite cloth-based performer since Beaker tore up Ode to Joy.) The better news is that the less musically inclined seem to know their limits; there's an awful lot of lip syncing going on, which probably makes up in ear-sparing what it lacks in excitement.

There's also adorableness to be found in the Music Videos section, where Billy and Penny's romance is heartbreakingly scored by Michael Buble, and Bad Horse's singing cowboys are reimagined as jaunty anime troubadors.

Sadly, what might be the most anticipated area is also the thinnest -- the In World section, where tributes, reimaginings and add-ons should be reigning supreme. Of course, Wonderflonium is still in its early days; Dr. Horrible itself only went live a little over a week ago. There is an adorable vid of Dr. Horrible as a child -- who knew Fisher Price made chainsaws? -- and a standout sidekick application from a "Dr. DreadFul." And surely more great creative content will crop up as time goes on.

Wonderflonium is a great idea. Whedon-love has always been the sort of fanship that brings people together. Is it fully delivering on its promise? Maybe not yet. But the great thing about this site is, if what's it's got to offer isn't satisfying you, you don't have to wait for something new and exciting ... you can make the magic happen yourself. So have at it, people!

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="460" caption="A GM stocking stuffer for Xmas? File Photo"][/caption]

George Michael finished 2 sold out shows at Madison Square Garden this week and did an interview with Good Morning America and unbeknowst to him, a mini-interview with hopefully our new correspondant from New York City who I call G.E.D. and the "E" stands for everywhere cuz that is where he seems to be.

In the GMA interview, he talked about how music saved his life thru his battle with depression and commented about the awkward time in his late 20's: "It was a terribly depressing time. I had my very first relationship at 27 because I really had not actually come to terms with my sexuality until I was 24."

"I lost my partner to HIV then it took about three years to grieve, then after that I lost my mother. I felt almost like I was cursed.

"The only thing that got me through it was my music. It survived. I wrote very, very little, but the little I wrote did well and kept my head above water. It was depression and shock which just went on for years."

"As the 24 or 25-year-old that could not believe how quickly all of his dreams had come true, could not believe how blessed he'd been, and then just this absolute nightmare. You have to believe that there's some reason it happened in that order. I was supposed to learn those things a bit earlier than other people so I could put it in to work."

Deep ish if you ask me. Let's get to the positive stuff.

George spoke with G.E.D. impromptu and off the cuff and his only request was no photos. He came off as a total gentleman and shared how great the tour has been and it is def his last in the U.S. We are sad to hear that but understand.

George told G.E.D. that he is planning to release a CD/DVD package of the North American Tour with all the songs played over here and the songs he will do overseas later this year that he did not do on the American tour, will be on the DVD & CD which he hopes to have in stores in December. YES!

This tour was awesome and aside from a certain someones Coachella DVD..cough cough...(Prince) cough cough (please release the Coachella DVD) cough cough....scuse me...had something in my throat, this DVD would be something I would be looking forward to.

Now, this came straight from George's mouth and we hope it does get released by the time he expects it to be, but we understand, but remain hopeful. The date we saw in L.A. was off the chain and I am sure Dr. Phil, Scary Spice aka Mel B., Victoria Beckham, Bo Derek, and others can agree to.

The celebs seen at the MSG show in NY were Neil Patrick Harris, Alan Cumming, as well as Kenny Goss and George's father.-Dr.FB

Thanks to the contribution of G.E.D.

Well, yesterday I forgot to include something in my "interim" post, and then we actually did something interesting last night. So:

Thanks to a good friend who had the kids for a sleepover, Anthropapa and I got to go out on the town last night. Probably not the best financial decision given that we're moving soon, but sometimes mental health takes precedence. Also probably the last major fun we'll have before the hellish insane big move.

We had dinner at Casa del Sol, a funky Mexican restaurant in Nyack. I had Caribbean jerk chicken over mixed field greens with mango, avocado, and pickled sweet red onion. Yum. Also a margarita, which I could only drink half of. I'm just not a drinker.

Image via Wikipedia

Then we sauntered over to Riverspace to see Helen Hunt's new film, Then She Found Me, her directorial debut. It was really, really good. People actually developing and maturing, right up there on the screen. Adoption, death, divorce, reuniting, parenting, infertility, aging, sex, work, religion, betrayal . . . no wonder the film was not produced by a major studio. And Colin Firth, you just can't go wrong with that.

The big downer was the two tickets on the windshield when we went out to our car after. We never put the new registration sticker in the window, so they thought it had expired. And we hadn't gotten the car inspected. And the court date is scheduled for after we're gone! So it looks like we'll have to pay up, just what we need right now. Grrr.

On the way home we drove through a huge thunderstorm, with enough rain pelting down that Anthropapa drove about half the speed limit. It was amazingly beautiful, and we badly needed the rain. I'm a bit sad that Idaho is so dry, because I love storms. It's going to be just like Sacramento, I think: sunny and hot pretty much all the time, except with a little added snow in the winter.

* * * * *

The other night we bought this very silly mini-film from iTunes.

Joss Whedon, of Buffy and Firefly fame, made this with his friends and family during the recent writer's strike. It's pretty unique in content and format: a supervillain musical! And the good guy is kinda bad, and the bad guy is supposed to be a hero, and the girl is very good but kind of wishy-washy...so it's kind of a mixed bag. All you geeks out there (and you know who you are) will get a kick out of it. Neil Patrick Harris is really expressive and subtle (when he's not practicing his evil laugh), and Nathan Fillion sports some major smarm and enormous biceps.

Okay, this is my third Sesame Street post in two weeks. Which is weird. But I think it fits in with some of my previous posts. After all being on Sesame Street is the height of cool, and Neil Patrick Harris can really belt it out (have you seen Dr Horrible's Sing Along Blog?)

Our beloved out & proud Neil Patrick Harris will be making an appearance on Sesame Street as a singing shoe fairy -- I shit you not. In the meantime, I'm still trying to figure out the educational value of a shoe pixie that shoots crotch rings and sings about footwear.

The video and more info after the jump.
Hopefully the fairy of matching shoes
will fix this mess.

Just when you thought he couldn't get any gayer, TowleRoad.com reported earlier today that Harris will be on the famous children's show, dressed as a dapper mythical figure chanting about foot apparel. But, don't call him a "shoe fairy":

"Not the shoe fairy – the fairy shoe person. It’s quite a different connotation. I was asked by Sesame Street to be a part of a song and I just leapt at the opportunity. Jim Henson was the only person I ever wrote a fan letter to as a kid and I’m a wild fan of puppets and the Henson Company in general. They wrote a song, wanted me to sing it. There are all these different mythical characters this season. Sandra Oh plays another type of fairy that Abby Cadabra creates and so we got to do this big musical number with puppets and dancing. It was a great, great afternoon. It’s one demographic that I have yet to win over."

Check out the video here.

Isn't that fabulous?! Now just get the "fairy shoe person", Bert and Ernie in the same episode and you've got yourself a veritable Sesame Street Pride march.

So this has got to be THE COOLEST THING EVER! I daresay... it's LEGENDARY!

Joss Whedon has done it again. And with more pure brilliance. Only this time he's working with Neil Patrick Harris in the mix. Also featured is Nathan Fillion (whom Joss LOVES and refuses to let die, so he gets put in EVERYTHING Joss does... LOVE IT!).

The name of this new project is Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, a mini-webseries. It's the story of a low-rent supervillain who is desperate to be a part of the EVIL LEAGUE OF EVIL, but his application is still being reviewed. Harris stars as Dr. Horrible, and Nathan Fillion plays his nemesis, Captain Hammer. Felicia Day rounds out the cast by playing Penny, the girl of Dr. Horrible's dreams, and Captain Hammer's reality.

This webseries was born out of frustration during the Writer's Strike, and Joss has pointed out that he created this to prove that so much more could be done with little money. Whole franchises could be formed on very little budget, and so far, that seems to be the plan for the Dr. Horrible series. There are plans for merchandise as well as DVDs and a soundtrack, and maybe even a sequel or two.

I found out about this yesterday, although I vaguely remember reading or hearing about it a looong time ago. Anyhoo, I downloaded the 3 Act story, and have not stopped laughing since. I've watched it about 3 times, and honestly, it is so very funny. The writing (as any Joss fan would know) is so great, and the acting is fantastic. And for a low-budget project, it was surprisingly well done.

You can find it on iTunes, and I'm sure the DVDs and soundtrack will be available eventually.

In the meantime, check out the websites, both official and unoffical. Trust me, they're so worth it.

It's official – this is the year of NEIL PATRICK HARRIS!

While checking out recent article links on Whedonesque this morning, I stumbled across a YouTube video, featuring two of my favourite things – Neil Patrick Harris, and SHOES!

NPH appeared as “The Fairy Shoe Person” in a song and dance number on an episode of Sesame Street. And it’s fabulous! (Suck on that Feist! You and your “1,2,3,4” song number on Sesame Street can’t hold a candle to NPH singing about shoes!)

Check out my article on the subject over at TheTVShowBlog.

NPH is having quite the year, and I think I have a renewed love for musical numbers based on his performances in this Sesame Street clip and in Dr. Horrible. Come this fall, he may take home an Emmy for his awe-some portrayal of Barney Stinson on How I Met Your Mother. Who’s joining me in my declaration of 2008 being the year of NPH?

Don't expect to find out who the mysterious mother is when CBS comedy How I Met Your Mother returns for its fourth season this fall. Guest star Sarah Chalke, the center of much recent speculation, will be returning for at least four episodes at the beginning of the season, but co-creator Craig Thomas isn't ready to make the big reveal yet.

"I am not prepared to say either way whether (Chalke) is the mom," said Thomas. "But I will also say we're not antsy to tell people who the mom is in the premiere of season four. We have a little mystery going."

But he did promise that the premiere will address the two cliffhangers from the finale--Ted's proposal to Stella and the sudden emergence of Barney's feelings for Robin. A wise strategy since, at this point, the show's audience is far more invested in the burgeoning potential for a Barney/Robin romance than they are in the yet-to-be-revealed mother of Ted's children.

The series seems to have been building towards the Barney and Robin storyline ever since the season one episode in which the two characters bonded over laser tag and cigars. "There will never be a more perfect woman for Barney than Robin," Thomas said. "I think the audience will see very quickly that we're not defanging Barney. We'll see a guy who has these feelings and has no clue what to do with them."

And apparently Lily will have an important role in the storyline as well. "Lily's going to play into it a bunch, as the only one who can tell something's a little odd about Barney, something a little different than before the bus hit him. It's fun to see her recognize him."

Speaking of Barney, his words of wisdom will be captured for posterity and published in The Bro Code, set to hit bookshelves in late November. Co-creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas have signed a deal to write the book, along with show writer Matthew Kuhn, who has written Barney’s blog for the CBS web site for the past three years.

Barney's "Bro Code" was featured in the season three episode "The Goat," and includes such nuggets as, "Should a Bro pick up a guitar at a party and commence playing, another Bro shall point out that he is a tool."

E onde está Six Feet Under (HBO)? Mais uma vez, o melhor drama da HBO/Warner fica de fora...

(*) O nome da emissora junto com a série de TV não é a mesma que a produz, e sim o canal em que é transmitida no Brasil.

WARNING: SPOILERS INCLUDED!!

DR. HORRIBLE'S SING-ALONG BLOG: Parts I-III

First, I must say that I've had these songs in my head for days now. Joss Whedon and his cohorts has done yet another good job of coming up with various catchy and diverse songs to put together an entertaining show. Well done. If I had to choose, I'd say Part II probably had my favorite songs in it, but really, they all had outstanding numbers.

But let's get to the review, shall we? So as not to spoil the end for some of our RSS readers, I'll try to save the spoilers for the bottom, so let's go through performances first. (And let me apologize if I don't get the exact titles of the songs correct.)

I thought it was great. I really did. I enjoyed every minute--even the not so joyful ones. I think I was most excited about Neil Patrick Harris' performance. I knew of his interest and talent in singing from various interviews I'd heard from the cast of How I Met Your Mother, so I was thrilled to get to see him in action. And really, every time he opened his mouth, I loved it. His expressions and small gestures especially. His small shoulder dance in "Freeze Ray" and the small smirk at the beginning of "You're Gonna Die." I really just loved him and frankly still want to give him a hug.

Captain Hammer was a trip. "Corporate tool" is probably the best description of this person possible. My favorite was when he sang about his hair in "A Man's Gotta Do." I know some people might not have enjoyed his Hero song all that much, but it was entertaining. I'm glad he got a moment to sing his own song without having Penny or Horrible cut in.

And Penny was lovable, which I found surprising. I don't know why. Her lament was a little bored to me--I guess it was too reminiscent to Tara's "I'm Under Your Spell" in the Buffy musical, and I didn't necessarily need to know that Penny had a sad childhood. I'd rather just see her as a woman who grew into a nice person who cared. But either way, her smile did cheer me up, and I rooted for the good guy--er, the bad guy--to get together with her in the end (that's Dr. Horrible if you couldn't tell). Joss, in a few interviews, mentioned the feelings that were evoked every time Penny and Horrible sang together, and really, it couldn't be more true. If you don't know what I'm talking about, go back and listen to "On the Rise," the first song in Part II.

Now, let's get to the plot.

So when I heard "Sing-Along Blog," I really had no idea what to expect. I loved the concept. I liked the video blogs intermixed with the storyline. It really added a great aspect to the thing, and really, in the end, it packed a hardcore punch. The severe cut from the final song to his heartbroken, guilt-ridden face with "I won't feel...a thing" is just so strong. It's one that will stay with you.

Actually to be honest, I'm quite mad at myself (much more so than with Joss) for not realizing the end. I've been a loyal follower of Joss' work: Buffy, Angel, Firefly/Serenity. So the fact that I didn't see Penny's death coming is really just a bad note on me. I've been reading other reviews, and I never thought that Penny would become a secret supervillian, but I really never thought of her fate. My mind was focused the ultimate showdown of Dr. Horrible and Captain Hammer. I was considering their deaths--or really, the lack thereof, since I doubted Joss would kill them off (hey, I was right). For some reason, I just was expecting something...I don't want to say happy. Something lighter, I guess. In the end, I just came up with a blank slate.

Honestly, I'm a little torn on my opinion of Penny's death. On one hand, it blindsided me. I wasn't expecting it. On the other hand, Joss generally kills someone off! Plus, it tends to be something that other stories tend to do. If someone's fighting over a girl, the most tragic would be a hero's death or the death of the loved one. It makes sense that he would sacrifice what he loved most to get what he wanted.

Not to say I'm not hurt or miffed. It took me a couple watches (and I had to watch all three parts together) to really accept it as a decent end. And here's what I think: In the end, Penny sees Dr. Horrible as Penny and tells him that Captain Hammer saved them. Throughout the show, Dr. Horrible laments on society and the status quo. It's quite revealing that in the end, the character that seems to see so much good in humanity and seems to see the most about the world is the one blinded the most. She never sees the supervillain--probably to the benefit of Dr. Horrible's broken heart--and she still thinks Captain Hammer is the hero, like we saw in the first rescue scene. It was Captain Hammer that causes the errs, even if they were originally set into action by Dr. Horrible.

But Dr. Horrible has a point. Would it upset the status quo if he puts poison in the water supply, as he sang? Penny still saw everything in black and white, despite her almost discovery during both Captain Hammer and Dr. Horrible's final songs. Meanwhile, the rest of society just shifted their attentions to Dr. Horrible--their new superstar. He may be bad, but the merchandise is still sold and fans are still made. So really, Dr. Horrible becomes the worst villian but the status quo remains the same. Society just wants someone to talk about.

As much as I hate that Penny died and I still question whether it was necessary or just Joss' habit to tear apart his fans' emotions, I like the final thought. Even though looking back, it seems like a predictable ending as far as classic literature is concerned, I suppose it's ok. I don't know, honestly. I still go back and forth, though I like Penny's status quo mentioned. And it makes me feel good that Penny saw everything, but to her Dr. Horrible will remain her Billy Buddy.

Now, on brighter notes, Joss did a good job. I enjoyed. I'll definitely be buying the DVD and soundtrack (rumor is, the commentary on the DVD will be sung as well, btw). I loved the music. I loved the jokes. I loved Bad Horse and the rest of the League. And now suddenly I'm a larger fan of Neil Patrick Harris and a new fan of Felicia Day (she's not just the Potential that stayed alive and took care of the injured on the bus anymore!). Oh, and Nathan Fillion ain't that bad anyway. I'll be keeping my eye out on new projects--and Internet projects.

That is another great thing about this musical, which maybe I'll delve into another day. I like that we're now exposed in a grander scale the series that are Internet only. They can be successful (despite some other failures). So way to go Writers' Strike.

So way to go, Joss and crew. This was definitely NOT Horrible. And hey, if you're still upset about Penny, just think of it this way. At least he didn't chop the head off the human race...being Penny, that is.

just not High School Musical. Though i've never seen it, and never plan on it...(for I may like it, and what then?)

Anyways, thats besides the point. Yesterday, I was informed of a made for the internet musical blog called Dr. Horrible. Its a Joss Whedon thang, and seeing as though I do love Buffy, and most things Joss, I was intrigued. THEN, i found out it starred Neil Patrick Harris...and I am pretty much in love with everything he does, so I figured I'd check it out. THEN, i found out it was being taken offline last night, and i had mere hours to watch it.

So I did.

Whedon is the creator of the TV shows "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel" and "Firefly." "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog," is a musical superhero spoof starring Neil Patrick Harris and Nathan Fillion. It was freely available streaming online through July 20, and will be available for download and on DVD. Its only $3.99 for all three episodes. Buy it.

It was great, and musical, and ridiculous, and starred some of his old favorites. And now you can buy it on iTunes. Good thing I got in early. Cuz im cheap. I would recommend it though, and I apologize I didnt inform you sooner. I just didnt know. If you are a fan of the Buffy musical episode, "Once More With Feeling," you will find it especially enjoyable. The Whedon brothers have a knack for writing lyrics, harmonizing and creating something worth seeing. Maybe they will start showing this in theatres for a sing-along as well...especially since they pulled the Buffy showings.

I watched the new Harold & Kumar movie (yes it's crap) last nightand found that, like the original, it does feature Neil Patrick Harris (Barney Stinson fom How I Met Your Mother) which is awesome! I did see some of the posters featuring Harris and because of that slogan I am starting a revolution (a cult if you like) based around the saying above. What Would Neil Patrick Harris Do?

Who needs jesus when you've got a wingman like NPH?

For those who think i've gone completely mental. I have.

Come on people join the cult campaign and remember, if you don't know what to do, just ask yourself "WWNPHD?" and you'll find the answer.

Sorry I thought that slogan was amazing and i said to myself "that's so going in my blog!". Did anyone pick up the HIMYM references there? That image would be so good on a t-shirt.

Click on the following links for Acts I, II, and III at DrHorrible.com for a limited time for free, or purchase all three thirteen-minute long acts for $1.99 apiece.

Oh Joss Whedon, you had at me at NPH.

And here's a teaser, the last song of the second installment wherein Doctor Horrible (who holds a hold a PhD in horribleness), vows to destroy his arch-nemesis superhero Captain Hammer after he admits to wooing Penny, Horrible's love interest, and wanting to bed her only because he knows the Doctor is carrying a torch:

Whedon and company haven't actually named any of the songs as of this moment-- speculation will most likely be laid to rest once an album is released, Once More With Feeling style. Though fans, ok probably just me and that guy have been calling the aforementioned ^ "You're Gonna Die".

Enjoy!
