Report: Naked baby on the Nirvana "Nevermind" cover is all growed up...

The famous Nirvana album cover for “Nevermind” the one with the naked baby in a swimmin

The famous Nirvana album cover for "Nevermind" the one with the naked baby in a swimming pool floating toward a fishing line with a dollar bill on it, is now 17 years old. Spencer Elden looks back at the famous Nirvana cover after 17 years and admits to find it embarrassing to find himself as a naked baby on an album cover that so many people all over the world has already seen.

The kid Spencer Elden is not living the rich and famous world, and not in any big career. He got his fame just for that one photo for the album cover. He is just a normal everyday person like all of us, living with family and still in high school. He also says being a kid now isn't as great as being a kid in the 90's.

How did Spencer get the job for getting dunked underwater for a photo for an album cover? Spencer's father is a friend of a photographer who was shooting photos for the "Nevermind" album. "Nevermind" became the biggest selling album in the history of music and now the whole world knows what Spencer is like as a naked baby. "Nevermind" is still a very popular album to this day and forever will be.

Read this interesting article here:

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=92833535&ps=bb1

I remember when I first bought the album when I was a teenager, I was like "wtf"? Why is there a naked baby on the album cover in a swimming pool? I'm sure everyone who bought the album thought the same thing and that's the point. It was meant to be a controversial album cover to help create a buzz in the music business.

Some asshole hippy is asking people to vote on how he should destroy his $60,000, 2006 Range Rover SUV in a publicity stunt engineered to make him look some kind of environmental altruist or something...

Am I the only person who is growing tired of these privileged motherfuckers smugly rubbing their self-righteousness in the faces of citizens for whom that very same $60,000 might make save them from bankruptcy or home foreclosure? I hope he destroys it by personally driving it off a cliff, ridding the world of one more trust fund collecting prick bastard Nuevo-beatnik idiot while he’s at it.

Just look at this prick with his flip flops and cargo shorts and Ghostbusters T-shirt...

In other news, 50 Cent is suing Taco Bell for suggesting that he change his name to 79 Cent or some such for a day so that they can sell more tacos or whatever. 4 million dollars is what he’s asking for. If 50 Cent really gets 4 fucking million dollars because a shitty Taco chain made fun of his stupid ass name, I am going to shit a buffalo, that’s how pissed I will be. Fuck you, 50 Cent. Right in the bum.

Bitches don't know 'bout my TACO TIME!

Hey, Matthew McConagay had a kid this week or whatever! Supposedly homedude was in the delivery room for like 16 hours doing tribal dances and spinning fucking tribal Brazilian records (where in the hell does one actually find tribal Brazilian records anyway?). To everyone’s surprise, he didn’t give the kid a stupid ass, socially crippling name like “Apple”, “Kal-el” or “Bingo Pajama”… but even so, we’ve got to be about due for a shark attack by now haven’t we?

Now' is as good a time as any to dust off this old chestnut...

Lastly, The kid who was on the cover of Nirvana's "Nevermind” album is in the news all the time now that he is a teenager and thinks that makes him special. Apparently the little douchebag thinks he’s like an expert on the 90s or something, because he won’t shut up about it… at least whenever he’s done talking about everyone seeing his baby dick or how kids aren’t angsty enough these days for his taste. I don’t know why we are being subjected to his opinion but I wish he’d take a page from the Blind Melon “Bee Girl’s” playbook and shut your whoresome trap already.

Some kid that won't shut up about his peeny holding a record worth a bajillion dollars.

Hydroponic Advanced : One of the first things necessary when growing soybeans is to inoculate them with special nitrogen-fixing bacteria. This is used to allow the beans to absorb nitrogen more readily. You dust the seeds with this special solution before planting. These inoculates come in both powder and liquid form. Fungicide treatments applied to seed before planting are designed to protect the plants from root rot diseases. Many fungicide treatments can be mixed with inoculation materials and applied at the same time.

Soybeans grow like many other beans, vining and needing some sort of structure to support them. Construct a support system in your hydroponic growing area by running a line from one end of the area to another. When this is done, provide lines from each plant upward to the main line. This will enable your soybeans to grow upward, providing more space for plants and allowing bottom growth to obtain enough light. Soybeans need a great deal of light to produce flowers, which will then become your soybeans. Without enough light, your plants will not flower. hydroponic

While soybeans need a great deal of light, they do not like either high temperatures or great humidity. The growing environment would be ideal if it stays around sixty-five degrees Fahrenheit during the day. Humidity in the hydroponic growing area also needs to be kept low to prevent causing your soybeans to rot. A growing medium such as a peat/vermiculite blend is best for your soybean crop. You may also want to consider placing pebbles at the bottom of your growing container, as they prefer a well-drained medium that allows the roots plenty of room to breath.

As you should've noticed (unless you'e really, really persistant in not reading my other posts) that I have a thing for music. Now having this "Thing" is not a side affect of being a teenager, while there are teens who use music as escapist crap or a way to do what they call (and this is someone's actual words), "Individualizing your clique," I see it as an art, and listen to it cause I like it. That aside, "musicians" these days (examples: Fallout Boy, Avril Levigne, (or however the dick you spell that smeely Canadian-Frenchy's name) Solja Boy (boy indeed!) etc.) seem to have thought from the music they listened to was made for them(except for Soulja Boy, he didn't ruin anything that weren't already shit), made to be used by whiny fucking teenagers who think they need to escape from their "tragic nightmare of emotions" (again, someone's own words) lives that they say is so bad cause they didn't lose their virginity by age 12. Music they grew up on was made for the sake of the people that made it, Kurt Cobaine wasn't worried about pleasing the audience when he put his heart into his words, the stage wasn't a reitteration of High School for him, he didn't need anyone's exceptance to do what he did or do it so good. So why do these shit "artists" (more examples (I really wish there weren't so many) Blink 182, Kate Perry, Scary Kids Scaring Kids) make it like the audience is more important then what they really want to say? Something about buisness that the people who abuse music like this don't get is that even if you make something you like but the mainstream doesn't, there will always be an audience for it; I mean, people (like me) liked punk and do you think Minor Threat was worried about getting on MTV when they made their music?

Bottom line, music should be made as a reflection of one's self not of that person's bad memories, teenage years, insecurities and especially not the audience. Atleast not all the time.

One time, my roommate painted me naked for one of her art projects. Before you think this is really

One time, my roommate painted me naked for one of her art projects. Before you think this is really scandalous, let me clarify- I was wearing a bra and she made up my boobs. (One night, after having a little too much wine, I went on and on about how she painted them saggy. They are, in real life and the painting, anything but. HA!) As part of her project's theme, she censored my face. The painting was picked up by one of our university's academic journals, and suddenly, fliers of my body were all around school. Everywhere I looked I saw myself. And even though you couldn't see my face, I felt like I was in that dream where you are naked in front of the entire school. Because I was. Anyway, that's a long introduction to what I really want to talk about. Imagine if you were on the cover of an album that represented an entire generation, naked. So basically, naked in front of the entire universe.

Meet Spencer Elden. Well, you've already met him. In the quasi-intimate sense. He's the baby on Nirvana's famous "Nevermind" album, floating merrily along reaching for that dolla dolla bill, ya'll.

And NPR (I love love love NPR) did a story on him.

"Quite a few people in the world have seen my penis," he says from his home in Los Angeles. "So that's kinda cool. I'm just a normal kid living it up and doing the best I can while I'm here."

You know what, that is kinda cool. Power to you, man. Wonder what it's like to be him on a daily basis?

"My friend is all like, 'Hey I saw you today.' And I'm like, 'Dude, I was working all day.' And he's like, 'No, I went to Geffen Records, and you're on the floor and you're floating and I stepped on your face. 'Cause I guess they have like a floating thing where people can like walk on me and stuff ... so it's kinda cool," he says.

That's kinda cool too, Spencer. He might just be one of the most non-famous famous kids out there. And he's kind of kickass. Badass too, because his parents sent him to military school for a bit. Here he is now, all growed up:

Read the piece on this kid. He doesn't just smell like teen spirit, he reeks of it. Kurt Cobain would be proud, dude.

Jimi Hendrix gained attention by joining Eric Clapton onstage in London in 1966; The Stooges were

Jimi Hendrix gained attention by joining Eric Clapton onstage in London in 1966; The Stooges were signed when a record company went to scout out the headlining band MC5; Nirvana’s success helped catapult the Melvins. The Toadies got their start when fellow bands Decadent Dub Team (Cottonmouth TX), Last Rites, and the Buck Pets helped them land gigs in Dallas when in the past the task seemed impossible.

There are countless other examples of bands helping out their counterparts gain attention. And there is much to be learned from the path to national success of crucial bands throughout history, lessons applicable for local Madison Bands.

Recently I was watching Axiom, a local Madison alternative rock trio with a sense of humor; take the stage at their CD release party, when I took a glimpse at the crowd. The room was full of people, of course, but what really caught my eye were the other local bands in attendance. Local Madison bands not on the bill like Triibe and Lords of Discipline were in the house, and Kill Junior stuck around after their own high energy set.

It got me thinking of how important it is for local bands to be supportive of one another. Not only by coming out to the shows, but in all aspects of influence and cooperation. Sharing practice spaces and recording times, providing an opportunity for a fellow local band to play a show with you, and most importantly spreading the word about other local bands.

I got the chance to speak with Axiom after their stellar show, complete with lightsaber battle. When I brought up the subject of local band alliances, they were quick to point out “It’s important for musicians to treat their music scene as a community. If we don’t support each other, who will?” The support isn’t limited to hooking other bands up with shows, but also in musical influence. A band’s sound is in constant evolution. Axiom takes their influences from national acts such as Tool and Primus, but also credits local bands like Kill Junior, Ignorus, and Sunspot as an influential part of their sound. Evolving a unique sound to call your own is the essential appendage in the survival of the fittest in this unpredictable music industry.

[caption id="attachment_535" align="aligncenter" width="50" caption="lightsabers"][/caption]

In other words, succeeding in the music biz, even on a local level, involves cooperation. As Axiom stated in our interview, “The Madison scene is hit or miss… It would be nice to see the Madison scene revert back to the way it was 10-20 years ago, when everyone went out to their favorite bar to watch bands.”

Most working bands and musicians dream of making it big, gaining recognition regionally, nationally, somewhere other than their home town. And most want to see Madison become a national hot spot for music, a smaller version of Nashville or L.A. sans the cowboy boots and glitter.

What I’m suggesting is some kind of “golden rule” for local bands: If you want others to show up for your gig, you must to the same and show up for them. You never know where it could lead.

You can start out by checking out Meteorade opening for XYZ Affair and Roomate at High Noon on July 27 or the The Box Social opening up for the Toadies and the Whigs at the Annex on July 31. And don’t forget Kurt Cobain’s favorite band, the Melvins, at High Noon on August 3.

SPENCER ELDEN: THEN

You may not recognize Spencer Elden - especially with his clothes on.

Elden has one of the most famous penises in Rock history. When he was an infant, the now 17-year-old was featured on the cover of the Nirvana album "Nevermind." The album sold 26 million copies. NPR recently did a feature on Elden.

Although he represents an entire Generation X of slackers, Elden is actually on track to graduate a year early from high school. Plus, he's considering attending West Point.

It is hard to find perfection. Sure, this blog dabbles in it on a regular basis, but otherwise life is sometimes a fruitless search for those things that are perfect from head to toe. So it is in the world of music, but sometimes you do come across albums that are spotless from the first song to the last.

John Sellers , in his excellent book Perfect From Now On (which we are reading now), calls them "dingers": albums that lack a song that you tire of in five plays or fewer. Among his list are Guns N' Roses: Appetite for Destruction, The Shins: Chutes Too Narrow, U2: The Joshua Tree, and The Strokes, Is This It. I'm not sure about the five plays or fewer, so I'm focusing on albums I like every single song on. This is quite a tough list to make. Some albums have 12 awesome songs, but one clunker that I never really fully liked. Or I might actually like that one oddball song, but not enough to count the album as "perfect". Those that almost make the cut, with the song that prevented them:

The Beatles: Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band (Within You, Without You)

Led Zeppelin: Houses of the Holy (No Quarter)

Foo Fighters: Foo Fighters (Exhausted)

Nirvana: Nevermind (Something in the Way)

Pearl Jam: Ten (Why Go)

And now, without further ado, are the albums on which I like every single song:

Smashing Pumpkins-Siamese Dream

The Beatles-Abbey Road

Radiohead-OK Computer

R.E.M.- Automatic for the People

Weezer-Weezer (the blue album)

Now, I'm not saying these are my 4 favorite albums of all time (although all of them would make the top 10-20) But every single song on them is good. Great, even.

One of my wishes (besides the ability to fly, produce cash from thin air, and to be the best air guitarist in the world) is to see, in my lifetime, the release of an album that EVERYONE agrees is the best album of all time. Sure, many albums are universally loved, and always at the top of any All Time List that various magazines put out. Sgt. Pepper, Exile on Main Street, Ok Computer, Led Zeppelin IV. But the key is that people debate over these things. I want an album that makes everyone give up their arguments, throw in the towel, and fall down on the ground and roll around in pure acknowledgement that no one has ever released anything greater.

It would be nice to have this happen in other artforms as well, like movies or TV Shows. I thought the tobacco-spitting cupcake scene in Cabin Boy might qualify it for consideration, but alas that movie has not aged very well (but that scene will forever live in my heart). And while the Different Strokes episode where Sam is kidnapped was tension filled, there were other episodes that were lacking. So I'll keep wishing for that day. Until then, I'll be listening to Abbey Road while watching the series finale of The Wonder Years.

Album Nirvana MTV Unplugged in New York berada pada ranking 307 RS 500 edisi buku. Sementara, pada RS 500 edisi majalah, Nirvana MTV Unplugged in New York berada pada nomor 311.

This made me feel old... While driving home from SMU yesterday I was listening to NPR. That was when it happened: I heard a teaser just before the break that said, "Whatever happened to the Nirvana baby, the one on the cover of their genre changing album, Nevermind?" If you don't already know what that album cover looks like, this post will probably have no interest to you. But, having gone through adolescence in the 90s, I knew exactly what he was talking about. The question seemed so obvious, but I had never thought about it. What did happen to the Nirvana baby?

Following the break on NPR, there was an interview with, and a story about, Spencer Eldin, the now 17 year old, who is also the baby on the cover of Nevermind. This was definitely a trip down memory lane and I found it to be fascinating. (It also made me feel very, very old. I mean, how could the Nirvana baby be getting ready to go to college... I remember when that CD came out...)

You can read the article here. But, I would highly recommend clicking on the "listen now" link when you get to the article. When you do you will get to hear the most surreal part of all, Spencer talking about how much cooler it would have been to grow up in the 90s. You know, when people actually formed real bands, instead of just playing Rock Band. Ah, the good old days.

Yesterday’s track was a little somber, a little quiet. To switch gears, we turn today to

Yesterday's track was a little somber, a little quiet. To switch gears, we turn today to.....the United Kingdom??? I know, I know. Most modern rock music that makes it across the pond tends to be as serious as a royal funeral. Radiohead, Muse, Oasis, Coldplay, Keane - even if their personalities aren't serious the music itself mostly comes across that way. Maybe they do things differently in Wales though, because the now defunct band Mclusky breaks this stereotype with a nerf sledgehammer.

[caption id="attachment_59" align="aligncenter" width="112" caption="Dallas = Done."][/caption]

The song is called "Alan is a Cowboy Killer" and comes from the 2002 album Mclusky Do Dallas. A quick look at their catalog will show you more clever titles, but playful titles do not a playful band make. Mclusky succeeds at being exciting by using energy, volume, a good bit of dirt, and just enough brains. What's this song about? I couldn't tell you and I'm glad. I'm as joyfully clueless to the meaning of this song as I was with anything that came out of the Grunge era. In fact, I don't think it's a stretch to imagine that this song could have been a hit on alternative radio had it come out in 1992. Think the catchiness of Nevermind era Nirvana with the slease of Mudhoney. But mostly just turn the volume up, put on some loose clothes, and pretend Christian Slater just told you to put all your silverware in the microwave. Because thirty seconds into this you're going to be spazzing out.
