<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This weekend Businessweek's Wildstorm published a <a href="http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/08_24/b4088000958059.htm?chan=technology_tech+maven+page+-+new_this+week's+column" target="_blank">cool column about mobile voice based search</a> as implemented by Microsoft (TellMe) and Yahoo (oneSearch). Interestingly enough, Wildstorm's experiments and conclusions of the two applications show the two lack in some aspects and in essence compliment each other. Yahoo's search results were a mix of possible results (reminding me of their <a href="http://sleeplessinny.wordpress.com/2008/05/10/yahoos-web-30-move-2/" target="_blank">Glue experiments</a>),  and with the web getting wider yet narrower,  focused as well as  associative at the same time, the mobile arena is definitely offering a challenge: how do you offer a search that is targeted yet not limited, moreover a voice based one?</p>
<p>"Microsoft and Yahoo are each solving part of the puzzle" says Wildstorm. And not only that, a voiced based service is a big big step with mobile application and services and might help take mobile UX to the next level, as iphone did at the time.</p>

So, since I live in BlackBerry Land and Sandia. Here is the latest software that I found pretty cool.... It's by Yahoo and it's called OneSearch. The idea is this:</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">Instead of driving down the road trying to google search your favorite restaurant just open up the oneSearch application and say what you are looking for. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><font color="#0000ff">I talked to the product manager for 360 Search at Serials Solutions yesterday 10/18/07 about changes to the OneSearch interface. We should see two changes very soon to OneSearch. </font></p>
<p><font color="#0000ff">The first is that the <em>Refine Search &#124; New Search links</em> which are displayed in the results page will be moved. Right now they appear right above the clustering information and don't stand out very much. The links will be <em>moved to the center</em> of the screen so that they aren't confused with the clustering options. This will address users' difficulty in not being able to easily start a new search, one of the issues uncovered during usability testing. I'll work with my support contact at Serials Solutions to finalize the details before implementation. </font></p>
<p><font color="#0000ff">The second piece of good new is that a <em>multi column display</em> will be available in a few months. This will help break up our one long list of subjects and databases. I did learn that Serials Solutions is supporting a subject list that displays a hierarchy. I thought that I’d wait to change our subjects from the current laundry list to a hierarchical display until we have made decisions about displaying subjects on the Databases page. I want OneSearch to follow the same subject scheme as what appears on the Databases page.</font></p>

The <strong><a href="http://investor.infospaceinc.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=246840">announcement</a></strong> highlights the two different approaches being taken for mobile search; one which  adapts a PC  search experience to a phone, and another that exploits location awareness and maximizes usability.</p>
<p>The two search engine giants, <a href="http://www.google.com"><strong>Google</strong></a> and <strong><a href="http://www.yahoo.com">Yahoo</a></strong> adapt a PC browser for their <strong>primary</strong> search products. <strong><a href="http://www.google.com/mobile/">Google mobile search</a></strong> replicates and optimizes its desktop application for the mobile environment, and requires users to type in search terms into a box on a web page as they would on a PC. Yahoo’s <strong><a href="http://mobile.yahoo.com/onesearch">onesearch</a></strong> does the same, but adds an SMS-based option where users text a search term to a special number and receive the results in another text.<!--more--></p>
<p>Infospace’s GPS based <strong><a href="http://www.infospaceinc.com/mobileprod/finditmobile.aspx">FindIt! mobile</a></strong> service has been developed with search software specialist <strong><a href="http://www.fastsearch.com">Fast</a></strong>, and web-to-mobile content adapter <strong><a href="http://www.infogin.com">InfoGin</a></strong>. The solution’s automatic location capabilities ensure that results are very accurate, even if the user does not know their position. Most importantly from a usability perspective, it features a click-oriented user interface. This makes it easier and more intuitive to use for most consumers.</p>
<p>Despite the increasing penetration of Internet-enabled mobile devices with a keyboard, the mobile environment is still voice-centric for the most users. What’s more, it’s likely to stay that way for the foreseeable future. So could offering a voice-based service be a better mobile search strategy?</p>
<p><strong><a href="http://www.microsoft.com">Microsoft</a></strong> seems to think so. In March this year, it acquired <strong><a href="http://tellme.com">Tellme</a></strong>, a company that specializes in voice-recognition-based search services, used by up to 40 million people per month in the US. Tellme enables users to call a number, ask for a business name, wait until they hear the result they want, and ask for a text with the details to be sent to their mobile device. This solution is an effective combination of SMS and voice, the two most popular mobile applications. Google is not far behind however, with its own <strong><a href="http://inbabble.com/2007/04/15/google-testing-voice-directory-service/">voice directory search</a></strong> currently in testing.</p>

The search results would first list the movie, including a user rating, local theaters the movie is playing at, news headlines related to the movie and more. To dig more deeply into the results, a consumer would simply need to click on any item or category. For example, to see all the movies playing at a specific listed theater, just click on the theater name.</p>
