OpenOffice 3, que comenzó a gestarse hace 3 años, supone un salto cualitativo ya que incluye una gran cantidad de novedades, tal y como se puede leer en el sitio oficial, aunque quienes más contentos estarán son los usuarios de MacOS X, ya que esta versión ofrece soporte nativo para este sistema operativo.

En esta dirección os podéis descargar OpenOffice 3. Desgraciadamente aún no ha salido versión en español (sigue la 2.4.1) pero confío en que dentro de poco salga a la luz.

Mac OS X users get one of the biggest boosts in this version, as OpenOffice.org 3.0 is finally an Aqua application, rather than one that runs through an X11 server. While the NeoOffice project has made an Aqua fork of OO.o available for some time, having this feature as part of the core code means that Mac users won't lag behind in features. In my initial testing, OO.o 3.0 is also faster to launch than the recent NeoOffice version (though the difference is not dramatic).

Two other key improvements should help with adoption of this version: thorough open-source proponents will appreciate the support for ODF 1.2 as the native document format, while those with a more pragmatic approach will like that it can open up Microsoft Office 2007 documents. The Office 2007 compatibility isn't perfect (understandable, given the complexity of the documentation for that format), but it's definitely useable.

There are also functional improvements. For instance, the maximum size of spreadsheets has been increased, and there's a sharing feature to allow for spreadsheet collaboration. Writes can display multiple document pages while editing, which is good for large monitors. There are also minor enhancements to charting and drawing.

Die für mich auf den ersten Blick bemerkenswerteste Neuerung ist die Unterstützung von Microsofts Office-XML-Format. Bisher sah ich mich "leider" gezwungen, Leute um eine andere Dateiversion zu bitten, wenn ich eine solche Datei (.docx, .pptx und .xslx) zugeschickt bekam :-)  Um den Microsoft-XML Import ein wenig zu testen habe ich mir mal bei exalead eine Beispieldatei gesucht. Diese war 911kb groß und beinhaltete 31 Seiten, einige Grafiken, farblich hinterlegte Rahmen und am Anfang ein Inhaltsverzeichnis mit Links. An dem Uni-Rechner, an dem ich gerade sitze gibt es "nur" eine MS-Office 2003 (SP3) Installation. Daher müssen auch bei MS-Office XML-Dateien beim Öffnen konvertiert werden. Inwiefern das zwischen den einzelnen MS-Office-Versionen einen optischen Unterschied macht, kann ich nicht sagen. Es gibt jedoch ein paar optische Unterschiede zwischen MS-Office und OpenOffice.

Diese beiden Screenshots stammen von ein und demselben Rechner, auch das Dokument ist das gleiche. In MS-Office ist es als schreibgeschützte Kopie geöffnet, da ich die Datei zuvor schon in OpenOffice geöffnet habe. Es fällt bereits hier auf, dass bestimmte Layout-Details deutlich unterschiedlich aussehen. Am Ende des Inhaltsverzeichnisses scheint ein Seitenumbruch zu sein. OpenOffice, das hier viel größere Schrift verwendet, nimmt dies zum Anlass, eine leere Seite einzufügen. Das Inhaltsverzeichnis benötigt in MS-Office so etwa acht Zeilen weniger als in OpenOffice, plus die bereits angesprochene leere Seite.

Ganz optimal ist der Import zwar (noch?) nicht, jedoch muss man klar sehen, dass Microsoft auch überhaupt kein Interesse daran hat, dass die Office-XML-Dokumente auch in anderen Anwendungen perfekt aussehen. Der Informationsaustausch ist jedoch gewährleistet und was das Layout betrifft sieht man wie es aussieht zumindest noch, was ungefähr gemeint war. Jedenfalls freue ich mich schon auf die endgültige OpenOffice-Version 3.

Gli sviluppatori del celebre software open source invitano gli utenti a segnalare eventuali bug e difetti servendosi di questa pagina.

Negli ultimi anni OpenOffice è divenuto un pilastro portante per le piattaforme desktop basate su Linux, guadagnando sempre più consensi anche in ambito Windows, dove fornisce - ad un prezzo imbattibile - buona parte delle funzionalità offerte da MS Office e altre suite commerciali per l'ufficio. Con la nuova major release 3, il cui rilascio è previsto per settembre, OpenOffice tenta di colmare buona parte delle lacune che ancora lo rendono, agli occhi dei più esigenti, un prodotto incompleto. Lo fa introducendo un numero davvero imponente di novità, le più importanti delle quali sono descritte in questa pagina del sito OpenOffice.org e corredate da screenshot.
Delle nuove caratteristiche di OpenOffice 3 vale la pena menzionare i filtri d'importazione per i formati di Office 2007 e Office 2008 per Mac OS X (.docx,.xlsx,.pptx ecc.), l'implementazione dell'imminente specifica OpenDocument Format (ODF) 1.2, il supporto alle macro VBA (ancora parziale) e allo standard per l'archiviazione documentale PDF/A, il supporto nativo all'interfaccia Aqua di Mac OS X, un più avanzato tool di esportazione dei documenti PDF, la piena integrazione con Windows Vista, e i nuovi componenti di calcolo e creazione di grafici inclusi in OpenOffice Calc.

Gli utenti del foglio di calcolo Calc beneficiano di un incremento del numero di colonne per singolo foglio, ora pari a 1024, mentre quelli del word processor Write possono utilizzare le nuove funzionalità dedicate alla gestione di note e appunti e la possibilità di visualizzare, in fase di modifica, più pagine per singola schermata.

Tutto nuovo anche lo Start Center (v. immagine a fine articolo), la schermata di benvenuto da cui è possibile aprire un documento preesistente, selezionare l'applicazione da lanciare in base al tipo di documento che si vuole creare (testo, presentazione, database, foglio di calcolo, disegno e template), e visitare il repository di estensioni per OpenOffice.

Rispetto a quanto annunciato lo scorso settembre, quando Louis Suárez-Potts, community manager di Sun per OpenOffice.org, anticipò a grandi linee le caratteristiche di OpenOffice 3, si notano due assenze: un componente integrato per il personal information management (PIM) e un filtro nativo per l'importazione dei file PDF.

Nel primo caso il team di OpenOffice.org aveva inizialmente promesso un'estensione per Thunderbird basato sull'add-on Lightning che avrebbe dovuto integrare le funzionalità di questi due programmi in OpenOffice: di questa estensione si sono però perse le tracce, ed ora sul sito di OpenOffice.org viene semplicemente suggerito agli utenti di scaricare i due software di Mozilla a parte. Per quanto riguarda invece l'importazione e la modifica dei PDF, questa funzionalità viene attualmente fornita solo come add-in opzionale: è probabile che, almeno nel prossimo futuro, questo componente non farà parte delle caratteristiche native di OpenOffice.

OpenOffice 3.0 Beta 1 può essere scaricato da qui nella versione inglese per le piattaforma Windows, Linux, Mac OS X e Solaris. Il language pack italiano, che consente di convertire la versione inglese nella nostra lingua, è disponibile qui (link diretto alla versione Windows).

Han publicado por fin la beta de esta magnífica suite ofimática de Open Source. Tengo que decir que ya hace un tiempo he estado probando la versión OpenOffice 2, y tengo que decir que todos las pruebas a las que le he sometido, de compatibilidad de formatos, pruebas de maquetación etc..., han resultado siempre satisfactorias en comparación con lo que nos ofrece la potente y de pago Microsoft Office. La Beta de la versión 3 sin embargo da un paso más allá para los usuarios de MacOs X, y es que desaparece el uso de X11, por lo que el software será más nativo que nunca.

Write, Calc, Base y Draw funcionan fluidas y con bastante potencia en lo que se refiere a manejar documentos grandes. Para quien todavía no conozca esta suite deciros que obviamente por los nombres podéis deducir, que Write es el homónimo de Word; Calc de excell; Base de Access; Draw de PowerPoint. Nos ofrece un diseño de las interfaces bastante amigable y los menus son sencillos de utilizar. Hay que decir que de momento es una Beta, por lo que nos avisan que podríamos tener algunos problemas lógicos por estar todavía en desarrollo, pero al menos a mí me ha parecido bastante estable, por lo que deducimos que dentro de poco saldrá a la luz la versión definitiva.

What's new in OpenOffice.org 3.0?

The most immediately visible change to OpenOffice.org 3.0 is the new "Start Centre", new fresh-looking icons, and a new zoom control in the status bar. A closer look shows that 3.0 has a myriad of new features. Notable Calc improvements include a new solver component; support for spreadsheet collaboration through workbook sharing; and an increase to 1024 columns per sheet. Writer has an improved notes feature and displays of multiple pages while editing. There are numerous Chart enhancements, and an improved crop feature in Draw and Impress.

Behind the scenes, OpenOffice.org 3.0 will support the upcoming OpenDocument Format (ODF) 1.2 standard, and is capable of opening files created with MS-Office 2007 or MS-Office 2008 for Mac OS X (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx, etc.). This is in addition to read and write support for the MS-Office binary file formats (.doc, .xls, .ppt, etc.).

OpenOffice.org 3.0 will be the first version to run on Mac OS X without X11, with the look and feel of any other Aqua application. It introduces partial VBA support to this platform. In addition, OpenOffice.org 3.0 integrates well with the Mac OS X accessibility APIs, and thus offers better accessibility support than many other Mac OS X applications.

As per usual you can grab the beta from here.  Be aware that as its beta software there might still be some bugs creeping around so use it with caution.  Personally I've always made use of OpenOffice at home and work as its been more than sufficient for my daily needs.  It really is amazing that it manages to give everything that Microsoft Office offers users for free and even manages to trump Microsoft's suite in several areas, notably PDF export functionality.  Give it a try.  Its free so you have nothing to lose :)

• Xorg 7.3 trình điều khiển màn hình, bàn phím, chuột đời mới sẽ có tính năng tự cấu hình cao hơn trước. Hỗ trợ cắm nóng và chỉnh cấu hình on-the-fly. Có thêm một số driver mới. Hỗ trợ màn hình cảm ứng. Hỗ trợ chỉnh màn hình thứ hai linh hoạt hơn. Cho đến nay, chỉnh các thông số màn hình vẫn là điểm yếu của Linux so với Windows. Hy vọng là lần này sẽ có nhiều cải tiến.
• Môi trường đồ họa GNOME 2.22 (đối với Ubuntu) và KDE 4 (đối với Kubuntu). Riêng về giao diện đồ họa thì hiện Linux và Win ngang nhau: bóng bẩy, đẹp, có nhiều hiệu ứng 3D,... Nhưng ngược lại cũng đòi hỏi cấu hình máy cao. Kubuntu KDE4 chạy chậm hơn PCLinuxOS 2007 nhiều mà đồ họa cũng không đẹp hơn.
• Nâng cấp, thay đổi một loạt các phần mềm ứng dụng.
• Tích hợp tốt với môi trường mạng Active Directory của Windows nhờ phần mềm Likewise open.
• Cài đặt và gỡ bỏ trực tiếp trong Windows (như cài một phần mềm Windows, vào một thư mục của Windows) bằng phần mềm Wubi. Loại bỏ được các sai lầm theo kiểu cài cũ (tạo partition mới) có thể làm mất Windows và gây khó khăn ngần ngại cho người mới học Linux. Tính năng này được xem là một bước quan trọng góp phần phổ biến Linux cho người mới dùng.

Tính từ hôm nay, còn 31 ngày nữa bản 8.04 sẽ chính thức ra đời.

2- Firefox 3: trình duyệt Firefox hiện đang là bản 2.0.0.12. Phiên bản tiếp theo Firefox 3 đã có đến bản beta 4 với nhiều thay đổi quan trọng:

• Dùng cơ cấu hiển thị web (Web rendering platform) phiên bản mới Gecko 1.9 với hơn 12.000 mục nâng cấp, sửa chữa.
• An toàn hơn khi duyệt web: kích vào một biểu tượng nhỏ trong thanh địa chỉ để xem thông tin về chủ nhân site và dạng bảo vệ an toàn của kết nối đến site đó. Các site đã biết như nguồn phát tán malware (virus,spyware, trojan,...) sẽ được cảnh báo khi bạn truy cập vào đó. Các site bị nghi là giả mạo (forgery) sẽ không cho hiện nội dung. Khi tải các file chạy sẽ thông báo cho chương trình antivirus để quét.
• Dễ sử dụng hơn: quản lý các password tiện hơn, dễ cài các add-on hơn, chương trình Download Manager cải tiến, có thể tiếp tục download sau khi ngừng (resume), zoom toàn bộ trang hoặc chỉ text và nhớ các thiết lập zoom, quản lý các tab thuận tiện hơn, resize được thanh địa chỉ và thanh search, tích hợp giao diện với Vista, Mac và Linux.
• Cá biệt hóa nhiều hơn: bookmark dễ hơn và quản lý tốt hơn, thanh địa chỉ cải tiến có chức năng auto-complete phong phú và dễ sử dụng hơn, tích hợp với các ứng dụng web,...
• Tích hợp các công nghệ mới để hiển thị web nhanh hơn và tốn ít bộ nhớ hơn.

Đối với những người dùng web như một môi trường làm việc, trình duyệt quan trọng không kém gì Office.
3- OpenOffice 3: bản OpenOffice hiện là 2.3, bản 2.4 sắp sửa phát hành và khoảng 160 ngày nữa là OpenOffice 3 sẽ ra đời. Ngay từ bây giờ có thể tải bản 3 đang hoàn thiện ví dụ tại đây về dùng thử. Một số tính năng mới:

• Xem được nhiều trang đồng thời: xem được nhiều trang với độ phóng (zoom) khác nhau, xem hai trang như sách.
• Hiển thị note (comment) ở bên lề. Tính năng này có trong MS Office nhưng chưa có trong OpenOffice 2.3.
• Hỗ trợ từ gốc (native) định dạng OpenXML của MS Office 2007 (docx, xlsx, pptx). Các bản OpenOffice 2.3, 2.4 cũng có thể đọc được định dạng này nhờ odf-converter-intergrator . Ngược lại, MS Office đọc được các file OpenDocument (odt, ods, odp) bằng odf-converter.
• Solver trong Calc để giải các bài toán quy hoạch tuyến tính. Bản OpenOffice 2.3 có thể cài thêm solver này như một extension tại đây.
• Tô màu trong suốt trong Calc thay cho cách tô màu đặc hiện nay.
• Tạo bảng trong Impress.
• Tăng tốc độ mở (hiện OpenOffice 2.3 mở chậm hơn MS Office nhiều).
• Insert cross-preference là các heading (như trong Word). Tính năng này hiện có trong OpenOffice 2.3 nhưng dùng cách kéo thả và phải insert toàn bộ heading.
• Nhiều người cùng soạn một bảng tính.
• Mở và edit được file PDF!

Nhưng có hai tính năng cũng cần lại chưa thấy có: tùy biến bullet, numberring và chia ngang màn hình (rất cần khi dịch văn bản).

Bản OpenOffice 2.4.0 với một số cải tiến có lẽ sẽ ra đời vào 27/3/2008!

Por si fuera poco, cuenta con una amplisima gama de extensiones compatibles, entre los que se encuentra la compatibilidad con google docs.

Aunque me duela, tambien es importante la compatibilidad con Microsoft Office (R) 2007.

Gracias a los chicos de OOo por los paquetes para debian de la "developer snapshot".

Como instalar ooo-dev3.0.

Primero, tenemos que descargar de alguno de los mirrors de la página de descarga, en la seccion de developement releases el archivo (comprimido en tar gzip).

Estara en la seccion "/OpenOffice/developer/DEV300_m3" o similar
, descargamos el paquete (cuidado, es muy grande) y lo descomprimimos:

Laptop:~# tar xvf /OOo-Dev_DEV300_m3_LinuxIntel_install_deb.tar.gz

Ahora instalamos todos los paquetes que haya en debs/

Laptop:~# dpkg -i OO*/debs/*.deb

Nota: para amd64 simplemente añadimos al comando --force-architecture.

Y voilá, tenemos un bonito directorio /opt/ooo-dev3.0/ y los binarios en ooo-dev3.0/program/ . Bastara con crear un enlace en el escritorio (apuntando a /opt/ooo-dev3.0/program/soffice) o un enlace simbolico a /usr/bin.

Laptop:~# ln -s /opt/ooo-dev3.0/program/soffice /usr/bin/soffice3

Sarà pronto, secondo la prima roadmap, tra sei mesi; sarà preceduto dall'ultimo aggiornamento dell'attuale versione 2. OpenOffice.org 3.0 promette di essere un'alternativa consistente a Microsoft Office. A partire dall'interfaccia, sperando di ricevere grazie a Mozilla un client in grado di competere con Outlook

Se OpenOffice ha gettato il seme e il successivo OpenOffice 2 ha raggiunto la piena maturità iniziando un lento approdo sui desktop degli utenti privati (e di qualche pioniere del settore pubblico), la terza release della suite libera (anche se, puntualizzando, la licenza d'uso non è la canonica Gpl del free software, quanto la Lgpl) promette di essere una vera alternativa all'Office di casa Microsoft. Forse la prima a dare grattacapi allo spaccatredici dell'azienda di Redmond dai tempi dello scomparso Lotus.

Tuttavia, è meglio fare chiarezza da subito: OpenOffice 3 non vedrà la luce prima di sei mesi; sarà quindi necessario passare per la prossima minor release, la 2.4, che dovrebbe uscire verso la fine di marzo e che sta comunque accumulando fisiologico ritardo. Eppure, della prossima major release si sa già molto, grazie al sito Web OpenOffice Ninja, dedicato proprio alle future versioni della suite OpenOffice.org.

Cambieranno la schermata introduttiva, che persenterà i componenti della suite con maggior chiarezza, e molte funzioni di Writer, l'elaboratore di testi che punta senza mezzi termini a raggiungere la completezza di Word. In Writer sarà possibile visualizzare pagine e aggiungere note a margine sulla falsariga del prodotto Microsoft, mentre in Calc - il foglio elettronico - vi saranno molti miglioramenti orientati a una maggiore usabilità. OpenOffice 3 sarà in grado di gestire in maniera nativa i formati documentali proprietari di Office 2007, anche se "per ora con risultati non soddisfacenti", stando al blog di Ooo Ninja.

Finora, OpenOffice ha avuto il patrocinio di Sun, una base d'utenza affezionata ma non ancora il big spurt, quel balzo avanti clamoroso che ha avuto - ad esempio - il progetto Firefox. Oltre alla gestione dei gruppi di lavoro, a OpenOffice sembra mancare un'applicazione in grado di rivaleggiare con Outlook. "Per anni si è parlato di includere Thunderbird e Lightning - si legge su OpenOffice Ninja - in OpenOffice; ma non se n'è mai fatto molto. Forse le risorse allocate a Mozilla Messaging aiuteranno a migliorare in tal senso".

Ma sarà soprattutto il layout di OpenOffice 3 a cambiare rispetto a quello attuale. E a tentare di arrivare dove Fluent, l'interfaccia utente di Office 2007, non è ancora riuscita: all'utilizzo immediato di buona parte delle funzioni. Se questo avverrà, gli utenti (non solo privati ma anche istituzionali) saranno ben lieti di avere un'alternativa plausibile ai costosi prodotti di casa Microsoft.
