Elderly women are at greater risk of death after a hip fracture than after breast cancer, accord

Elderly women are at greater risk of death after a hip fracture than after breast cancer, according to a recent article in Medscape Medical News citing a study by Jane A.Cauley, DrPH, at the University of Pittsburgh. The death rate was 48.1% after a hip fracture versus 25.1% after a breast cancer diagnosis.

What causes hip fractures? Osteoporosis! Women with osteoporosis are the most likely to sustain a hip fracture. Osteoporosis advances rapidly after menopause due to the dramatic drop in hormones.

According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, half of the women over 50 will have an osteoporotic fracture before they die. Half of the women surviving a hip fracture will not be able to walk and a quarter will need long term nursing care. A woman’s risk of hip fracture is equal to her combined risk of developing breast, uterine, and ovarian cancer.

Women are not the only ones who suffer from this problem. Men also get osteoporosis, although it is poorly recognized by the medical community. Men typically develop osteoporosis slower and it appears later than in women. Testosterone begins to diminish in the early 30’s and decreases 1-3% per year, increasing the risk for bone loss. Men over 65 have a hip fracture rate of 5 in 1,000. Men over 65 are at risk and should have a bone density test done, as well as calcium, magnesium, thyroid, Vitamin D, and hormone levels.

By 2010, over 52 million men and women age 50 years and older will either have osteoporosis or be at increased risk because of low bone mass per the National Osteoprosis Foundation. Approximately 20% of those that develop hip fractures will die the year after the fracture from surgery complications such a pneumonia or blood clots in the lung according to the CDC.

The best therapy for osteoporosis is replacing lost hormones. In women, estrogen saves more bone tissue than very large doses of calcium according to the National Institute on Aging. In the May 2004 Journal of the American Medical Association, British researchers described a link between hormone replacement therapy and a reduced risk of bone fracture in post-menopausal women.

Poor nutrition and inadequate intake of nutrients, lack of adequate exercise, unhealthy lifestyle including cigarettes and alcohol, and race also contribute to osteoporosis. Hormone replacement in men and women is of key importance for bone health.

Replacemen with biodentical hormones is key. All three hormones are necessary in order to build and maintain bone: estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. If you are taking Premarin, you are only getting an estrogen effect, and a dangerous one.You don't want to trade one problem for another by taking alien synthetic molecules orally, like Premarin and Provera, that can increase heart disease, stroke, and breast cancer. Remember all estrogen, even bioidentical, should be taken transdermally. Any oral estrogen can increase C-reactive protein which correlates with a higher incidence of heart disease. Provera or medrxyprogesterone has no benefit for bone, and in fact inhibits beneficial progesterone production and effects by binding to progesterone receptor sites.

The synthetic pharmaceutical medications for osteoporosis, like Fosamax, are problematic. They do not allow for the natural turn-over and remodeling of bone and what you essentially wind up with is a lot of old brittle bone. In addition, one study showed that combining estrogen with Fosamax may increase fractures. In addition, Fosamax is correlated with bone problems in the jaw.

Vitamin D is very important to build bone and prevent osteoporosis. Even in the sun belts, Vitamin D levels are low among men and women due to interior jobs, sun-screen over-use, and lack of ability of aging skin to convert sunlight to Vitamin D. Get your 25 hydroxy Vitamin D levels checked with a blood test, and if they are low step up your supplementation until they come up.

Nutrient supplementation needs to be more than just calcium to build bone. Calcium citrate is OK, but calcium hydroxyapetite is best. Don't exceed 1600 mg total of calcium per day unless you want calcium in your arteries and kidneys too. Other important nutrients for bone building are Vitamin K, magnesium, manganese, boron, and strontium. Othomolecular makes a great supplement that has all you need for bone maintenance or improvement of osteoporosis called ProBono. Patient report joints feeling better on it as well.

Make sure you get a baseline bone density scan when you are in the perimenopausal years so you know where you are starting out. If you have osteopenia, take action. You can prevent osteoporosis!

Who hasn’t seen the advertisements in magazines and schools asking you if you have “Got

Who hasn't seen the advertisements in magazines and schools asking you if you have "Got Milk?" The dairy industry has a strong lobby, a positive message and government support. But are they right?

Milk is far from being an essential part of your breakfast.

Let's explore the reasons to give milk the boot.

Reason #1 to give up milk forever: Calcium not well absorbed

Milk has a high fat and protein content. The latest research is showing that the high fat and protein content of milk is impeding the absorption of calcium in our bodies. Sure, there is calcium in our milk but what good will it do if our bodies can't absorb it. Robert Cohen, the author of Milk The Deadly Poison states that the countries who drink the most milk have alarmingly high rates of osteoporosis. Isn't that what milk is supposed to prevent? New research is pointing to plant based sources of calcium as being better absorbed by our bodies. So Almond milk, fortified orange juice, kale or other leafy greens would be better substitutes.

If you are drinking milk for the protein then you can drink soy milk instead. Cow's milk isn't a natural source of Vitamin D either. The Vitamin D is added and plant based milks can have added Vitamin D too.

Reason #2 to give up milk forever: Pus

When cows that has mastitis, which is an infection in the milk-duct caused by a variety of things like not being milked frequently enough or from dirt, she doesn't get taken off the production line. She continues to be milked, and when she is, pus gets expressed at the same time. Yummy!

Sure, everything is pasteurized so there shouldn't be concern about bacteria but would you want to drink even sterile pus?

Not only that, but those infections in people are very painful and to be milked by a machine under those circumstances would undoubtedly be excruciating. This is also an animal rights issue!

Reason #3 to give up milk forever: Antibiotics

To treat or prevent mastitis, as well as other diseases incurred from living in close quarters to each other, the cows are given antibiotics. These antibiotics find their way into the milk that we drink. Antibiotics are great in certain instances but a daily dose is hardly recommended. Some scientists are starting to question the link between milk and antibiotic resistance.

Reasons #4 to give up milk forever: Hormones

In western countries we are seeing the effects of hormones in our meat and milk: early puberty! I used to think that this was just because of the growth hormones (rBGH made by Monsanto) but when I found out that we don't allow rBGH in Canada I had to come to a different conclusion. There are natural hormones in milk that may have an impact. Or maybe early puberty etc. is just a result of the hormones injected in beef.

Either way, hormones aren't meant for us to be carelessly ingesting. To be fair, there are phytoestrogens in soy products that are known to mimic estrogen. I never advise anyone to eat more than one serving of soy per day.

Reason #5 to give up milk forever: Lactose intolerance

On Food and Cooking states that most people in the world are lactose intolerant. We, in the Western/Northern world have trained ourselves to drink milk. But our bodies don't digest it very well. And if you're not convinced that your body knows best then think about this: The only specie in the world to drink milk past infancy is humans. Not only that, but we steal the milk of other animals. Picture a person sucking on a cow's teat and I think you get the picture. Milk is for babies! There is a reason that adults/humans are allergic to it. And speaking of milk being for babies. The babies of those cows don't even get to have that milk because we are drinking it. The babies who deserve the milk go on formula while we drink their milk. Milk that is causing an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. Milk that suppresses our immune systems. Why do we do this?

Reason #6 to give up milk forever: Animal cruelty

I have written about this before so I will try to be brief. The short and long of it is that cows have to lug around enormous amounts of milk all day and night. They are only milked twice a day, whereas a calf would drink many times in a day. This lack of milking increases their risk of getting Mastitis. A painful milk-duct infection. The milking of the cows that have these infections is very painful too.

The life expectancy of a normal cow in a natural environment is about 25 years. A milk cow has a life expectancy of six years. They also carry up to 40 lbs of milk more than a natural cow would have to.

These cows are also kept pregnant back to back to keep their milk flow going. As someone who has had three children close together I can attest to how exhausting bearing children is. Nursing in exhausting too. The calves born to these cows may or may not get to have their mother's colostrum. If they do, they only get milk for a few days maximum. Then they are sorted. The female calves are put on formula and raised to be dairy cows. The males are either raised as veal, which most people know is a very short and very cruel life, or they are thrown into dog food grinders.

This is your dairy industry.

Conclusion:

We are seeing more and more articles sneaking into the media about the new research being done to disprove the lies we have been told about milk. Lies like how it's good and nutritious for us. Lies like how it will reduce our risk of osteoporosis etc.

While it's hard to find all the pieces to the puzzle there is a picture starting to emerge. Will we take this information and learn from it or will we continue to make decisions that affect the quality of life of our children, ourselves and the animals?

In one of my previous posts, I reviewed a study which compared dietary supplement users vs. non-use

In one of my previous posts, I reviewed a study which compared dietary supplement users vs. non-users. The results of this particular study suggested that people who use dietary supplements differed from non-users in several key aspects. To understand an overall gestalt of how they differ, I think we need to take a step back and look at how we as individuals cope with illness.

Illness. It’s just a terrible word isn’t? To most people it’s something that we would rather not have to think about or have to deal with. For the unfortunate among us, it’s something that we have to deal with sooner rather than later. However, as we age it’s something that in one shape or form, none of us is lucky enough to escape. Eventually, we all generally have to learn how to cope with illness. In particular, this often includes common conditions including high blood pressure, cholesterol, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, arthritis as well as various types of cancer. Though we often consider illness as something that we need to diagnose and treat, perhaps, we should expand our efforts at methods of preventing rather than treating illness.

As individuals, we all have a choice in how we cope with the diagnosis of a medical condition. A diagnosis of cancer or heart disease can be tremendously stressful and people diagnosed with these conditions can potentially develop depressive or anxiety disorders. Some people will react with a general sense of denial and avoidance while others will take ownership of their illness and take a more active role in their treatment.

In general, people who take dietary supplements whether or not they are actually well enough informed or whether or not there is enough scientific evidence to support the use of a particular dietary supplement, often fall in the later category of people who take an active roll in their treatment and more importantly in seeking to maintain a healthy lifestyle. What does this entail? For the most part, it involves learning about your illness, asking your treating physician questions and reviewing your treatment options. These are just some of the options that we as individuals have in taking ownership of their illness. Aside from this, seeking to maintain a healthy lifestyle involves choosing to be more informed and taking active measures to actually attempt to prevent illness.

Now, I would suggest that you take one more step back and reflect upon how your choices as individual affect society in general. Health care costs are bourgeoning at an enormous rate. Given that we have an aging population and that many illnesses are somewhat age-related, costs to our health care system will only continue to escalate.

What can we, as individuals, do to help reduce our escalating health care expenditures?

Recently, I came across a series of four health-impact studies by the Lewin Group. These particular studies were commissioned by the Dietary Supplement Education Alliance (DSEA). The supplements studied in this health-impact study only included those with both the highest level of evidence as well as Federal Drug Administration (FDA) approved health claims. As you may expect, the focus of these studies encompassed the idea of consuming these dietary supplements to prevent rather than treat specific diseases.

The old adage, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is certainly supported by the potential health care savings of preventing rather than simply treating diseases.

Which supplements in this study could potentially reduce health care expenditures?

1. Calcium (1200mg) with Vitamin D

a. “Calcium with vitamin D: Appropriate use of calcium with vitamin D for the Medicare population shows potential avoidance of approximately 776,000 hospitalizations for hip fractures over five years, as well as avoidance of stays in skilled nursing facilities for some proportion of patients. The five-year (2008-2012) estimated net cost associated with avoidable hospitalization for hip fracture is approximately $16.1 billion.”

2. Folic acid (400 mcg)

a. “Folic Acid: The total lifetime cost of a baby with Neural Tube Defect (NTD) in 2004 is roughly $532,000, including direct medical costs, therapies and equipment, and special education. Out of about 4 million live births annually, NTDs occur in one of every 1,000 pregnancies in the U.S. Of 64 million American women who are of childbearing age, if just 10.8 million additional women began taking 400 mcg. of folic acid on a daily basis periconceptionally, approximately 600 babies would be born without NTDs, saving as much as $326 million as a result. Over five years, taking into account the very low cost of the supplement, $1.3 billion in lifetime costs could potentially be saved.”

Osteoporosis is a disease that weakens the bones and cause breakage most commonly in the hips, spine

Osteoporosis is a disease that weakens the bones and cause breakage most commonly in the hips, spine, and wrist. Normally there is no indication of this till there is some strain or a fall which causes a bone to break. This can happen at any age but is common in older women, so gender, age, body size, family history, lifestyle etc plays a role in causing this disease. It has been found that normally older White or Asian women, small made and thin people and also those with a family history of the disease are more prone to getting it. Other factors can also be - lack of exercise, bad nutrition, low estrogen levels, eating disorder or some medication.

A DXA test which is a bone mineral density test is done to determine check your bone health after which medication is given accordingly and also checks need to be done to find out if treatments are making the bones stronger. People with Osteoporosis need to take extra care not to fall down and this can happen due to poor vision, poor balance or medication such as sleeping pills etc. They need to care outdoors (use walking stick, wear flat heeled footwear, walk on grass instead of slippery sidewalks) as well as indoors (keep the rooms well lit and clutter free, use carpets on slippery floors, use skid free tiles on bath room floors. rubber mats and keep flashlight and cordless phone next to the bed). Many such simple measures can be taken to prevent a fall.

Several steps can be taken to keep the bones strong and healthy like –

1) Regular exercise - walking, jogging, weight lifting, tennis, dance etc.

2) No smoking and drinking - both cause weakening of bones.

3) Diet rich in Calcium – good sources are bread, cereals and orange juice.

4) Diet rich in Vitamin D – good sources are yoghurt, cheese, low fat milk and also sunlight.

No bones about it ladies. As you enter the early stages of menopause, your bones lose their ability

No bones about it ladies. As you enter the early stages of menopause, your bones lose their ability to retain their mass and manufacture new bone tissue, resulting in bone loss and increasing the risk for osteoporosis. In addition to exercise and eating calcium-rich foods, experts recommend calcium supplements to make up for what you might be lacking.

According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, adults ages 50 and over need about 1200 mg daily, while adults up to age 50 need about 1,000 mg daily. Calcium supplements have been shown to slow bone loss in postmenopausal women but for in some, may also cause bloating and constipation.

Fortunately, new research published in the early online edition of the journal Calcified Tissue International shows that supplements containing 500 mg calcium citrate are absorbed more efficiently than those containing 1000 mg calcium carbonate. What's more, the lower dose of calcium citrate also causes fewer side effects.

The bottom line is less may be more, except for when it comes to side effects.

For those of you who don't know the difference between the two forms of calcium, calcium citrate is derived from the citric acid while calcium carbonate comes from the shells of marine organisms, snails and eggs.

Finally, it's Wednesday! For whatever reason, the calcium symbol reminds me of the following scene from Singing in the Rain. Enjoy!

I had my first visit with my rheumatologist with insurance. My card came in the mail Saturday! I

I had my first visit with my rheumatologist with insurance. My card came in the mail Saturday! I'm in such a good mood. I'm sure I looked like some sort of nut job. I was smiling the whole time. Everyone in the office was excited for me. My doctor had a list of things shes been waiting to do.

I finally had Xrays taken. Two of my neck. Two of my chest. ( I'm not sure what those were for) 3 for each hand. 2 more each knee. 2 for each hip. I couldn't get into some of the positions though. My right hip wont bend outwards. And my knees wont straighten. The worst part was for the Xrays where I had to stand. The technician was so sweet though. She helped me stand. She held me up because I couldn't stay balanced when they made me stand straight. I had to take a break after the second Xray. I was in an ungodly amount of pain from standing. But I got through it all. I wish I could have seen them though. I'm curious. The last Xrays I had were two and a half years ago. And the cartilage was almost gone then.

I also had tons of blood tests done. I don't even know what all. There was something for thyroid. Something for vitamin b deficiency? Definitely something for calcium. And I had to pee in a cup for some odd reason. Ive never done that there. I should get the results soon. My doctor also wants me to see my endocrinologist about my thyroid. She said that may explain some of my fatigue.( Though she thinks it may be depression. Nope. Not it. ) I haven't been to him in nearly three years. He found a goiter about 4 years ago. But the last time I saw him he said it had not changed sizes and that I should come back in a year or so. So I'll call tomorrow about an appointment.

I have an order to start physical therapy too. She says its the most important. The order is for 3 times a week for six weeks. I have an appointment tomorrow for evaluation. Im kind of scared though. I mean, just standing makes me scream out in pain. How am I going to be able to handle therapy? I guess I'll find out.

I also have an order for a bone Density screening. Because of my prolonged steroid use. The osteoporosis center is closed until after the 4th of August though.

Oh, and I saw a dermatologist yesterday. He gave me a prescription and said it would go away completely. So that's a relief. Just a rash that is in no way medication related. Woo!

Oh, and my rheummy said she was going to give Enbrelone more month and if it doesn't do much better then we're going to try Humira. If that dosn't do much, then onto Orencia. Or some other medicine I've never even heard of. And now I'm going to taper off prednisone completely.

So I've had a very busy day. A fantastic day overall. But now I'm exhausted and sore and I'm going to try and go to sleep early. We'll see if it works. :)

I felt Healthier before I went to the Doctor!

Smoke Free 200 Days!

I went to the Doctor for my “Well Woman” visit. I weigh 173 lbs. Ugggghhhhh!!! I have to have a colonoscopy because I am over 50. Uggghhhhh! I have to have my yearly July 31st. Ugggghhhhh! My osteoporosis rating was T -2.5. last fall and he ask if I was taking my Fosamax and I told him I was going to take care of that myself with Calcium Supplements and Walking. Oh no, he said that won’t do it. I have to rebuild the bone! I have to take osteo medicine. so I am going to call my insurance and see if they will cover the once a year Reclast shot. Uggggghhhh! I hate going to the Doc. I couldn’t eat and was poked & prodded, took blood from my little veins, and had an EKG with hairy legs. Uggggghhhhhh! I’m not doing this again for another 5 -10 years. It’s too much work. Luckily I broke it up by doing the Bone Density and Mammogram last fall and the Chest X-Ray and my Eye-Exam. It’s tough trying to stay healthy.

And did the Doc care that I walk everyday? No, he was not impressed. Did he care that I hadn’t had a cig for 6 months? Kind of happy but didn’t jump up and down or pat me on the back and say, “Good Job”. He didn’t say my lungs sounded better or nothing. He listened to my heart a lot, like even in my neck with the stethoscope. Kind of weird I thought.

Anyway, it all ended with me not being able to pee in the cup so I figured I will do that when I go on the 31st to the Lady Doc there for my yearly. Oh, and the lab gal sent me home with a poop card. Ugggghhhhh! It was a wonderful day…

Pengenalan Penyakit

Pengenalan Penyakit

Punca penyakit / Faktor Risiko

d) Penyakit buah pinggang

-Masalah Ovari (kilang telur)

-Masalah rahim

     a) Fibroid, polip atau adenomiosis

     c) Lapisan selaput rahim terlalu nipis

-Masalah telur

1)Telur yang kurang berkualiti
-walaupun telur banyak dihasilkan namun ia kurang berkualiti meskipun berlaku persenyawaan

From 1967 to 1995, Creighton University conducted a study which became “one of the longest-running, continually supported projects in the history of the National Institutes of Health“. The test subjects were all nuns “representing six mother houses and all between the ages of 35 and 45 when they started” and took part in a study that “literally wrote the book on the operation of the calcium economy in mid-life women”.

For the study, the nuns would eat the same foods in exactly the same portions every day for eight days. The diets were designed to match, within 5 percent, their usual food intake in terms of calories, protein, calcium and phosphorus. Creighton researchers then meticulously gathered data to identify factors that influenced how the women’s bodies absorbed calcium, utilized it and excreted it.

Among the findings resulting from the Creighton research: Healthy adult women in midlife require 1,200 milligrams of calcium each day; and calcium absorption is influenced by such factors as body size, vitamin D, estrogen levels, age, race, calcium source and other nutrient interactions.

Though the study officially ended in 1995, the nuns “now in their 70s and 80s – continue coming to Creighton for calcium absorption measurements and bone-density scans.”

The findings have greatly increased science’s understanding in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.

Other studies involving nuns have been well documented. In 1986, David Snowdon, Ph.D. spearheaded a pilot program to investigate brain diseases in the elderly to “determine the causes and prevention of Alzheimer’s disease, other brain diseases, and the mental and physical disability associated with old age”.

Each of the 678 participants in the Nun Study agreed to participate in annual assessments of their cognitive and physical function, medical exams, blood drawing for genetic and nutritional studies, and brain donation at death for neuropathologic studies. The Nun Study represents the largest brain donor population in the world. In addition, the sisters have given investigators full access to their convent and medical records.

Since many Alzheimer’s patients are unable to provide accurate information regarding their past, due to the pronounced memory loss associated with the disease, these convent records provide an invaluable tool to study the long term health factors in each patient.

All in all, studies such as these, and others, allow scientists to further our medical understanding in the hopes of increasing the quality of life for all of us. Too often we hear about the divisions between science and faith, but there are probably many, many more stories about the two disciplines working together for a greater good.

If, like mine, it enters the room ten minutes before you do, then I would imagine the answer is quiveringly obvious...

Not only will it cast a shadow upon your toes, but in some cases, upon your very life. Sporting a pot belly is not just a consequence of a few beers too many or penchant for years of extra lard with your triple grease burgers, it can also be a mascot of a sedentary lifestyle imposed by the confines of CFS/ME or other bed binding illnesses - among a few other surprises - and that's not including bundles of joy and sleepless nights. Your not-so-sexy pot belly could be a symptom of a variety of insidious conditions and is often the first alert (even occurring in childhood) that something other than hail damage (cellulite) is agut, sorry, I mean afoot...

Here endeth the lesson, so waddle off to this link & explore:

http://www.potbellysyndrome.com/index.html

Thanks to the ever-so-sweet Miss Lesley for the alert. :)

How many of us remember when our mom’s told us to drink all of our milk? The truth is, mom did not

How many of us remember when our mom’s told us to drink all of our milk? The truth is, mom did not tell you to drink your milk because she simply felt like it, she did it because she wanted her growing child to have strong bones. However, strong bones are not only vital for growing children; all adults should make sure that they get the proper amount of calcium every day. Doing so reduces your chances of developing several bone related illnesses, such as osteoporosis. So how can we improve our bone health naturally?

One way to improve your bone health naturally is through a calcium rich diet. Breakfast is a great way to start. Many cereals can give you half of your daily calcium requirement. The amount of calcium that each cereal offers varies greatly from one brand to another. So remember to look at the food labels and compare which breakfast cereal offers you the most bone beneficial elements. Once you found a worthy cereal, simply add some milk and finish it all of with a glass of calcium fortified orange juice. Even if you are lactose intolerant you can find many dairy products that are lactose free. Simply check the labels.

As for supper, there are many bone strengthening options. Some foods that offer a lot of calcium include: canned sardines (3 ounces/ 320 mg of calcium), canned salmon (3 ounces/200 mg), Swiss cheese (1 ounce/270 mg), cheddar cheese (1 ounce/200 mg), turnip greens (1 cup/200 mg), and raw broccoli (1 cup/90 mg). These are just a few of the calcium enriched foods. Also, an important thing to remember is that most foods that are rich in calcium are also rich in vitamin D. Eating a diet rich in these two compounds will surely go a long way in protecting your bone health.

As a child, I never liked milk. I would throw the glass of milk my mom prepares for me every morning in the sink (baaad, I know). But now that I'm 23, I feel like my bones are not as strong as I want them to be. Hence, I'm trying to incorporate drinking milk into my lifestyle. After all, milk is a complete food, packed with most of the essential vitamins and nutrients our body needs everyday. So it's not just about bones and calcium.

Milk is great for overall health because it is one of the world's most complete foods and there's no other drink that is as nutrient-filled as milk. Of course, it is also the richest dietary source of calcium, that's why all babies and kids are required to drink it. But that doesn't mean adults should stop drinking milk. Everyday, it seems that more and more sicknesses are naturally occurring and we need all the nutrients we can get. Most especially, we need milk to stop osteoporosis from occurring when we get older.

Worried about getting fat when you drink milk? Fear not because there are many low-fat and even non-fat versions. Can't stand the pure taste of milk? You're not alone. When I found out that I still can't stomach pure milk, I bought Anlene's chocolate flavored milk that tastes a lot better. Good news is there is a lot of flavored milk as well in the market so take your pick.

Before you even start worrying of buying all sorts of vitamins and eating all sorts of food to fill up your deficiencies, maybe you just have to drink a glass of milk everyday, for starters.

Care to share your thoughts on milk? :)

[caption id="attachment_145" align="alignnone" width="138" caption="food ph scale"][/caption]

An acidic imbalance can cause many health problems, and although most conventional doctors don’t believe that an acid-producing diet can be the leading foundation for chronic illnesses, conventional medicine has evidence supporting the link between an alkaline diet preventing many illnesses, such as osteoporosis, age-related muscle wasting, heartburn, insomnia and nasal congestion.

The human blood pH should be at a slightly alkaline level of 7.35 – 7.45. A pH scale will show 7.0 as neutral, below 7.0 as acidic and above 7.0 as alkaline; below or above this range can lead to the onset of disease.

Healthy cells must have the correct pH balance in order to keep the body functioning optimally. Some functions such as the body’s production of energy and transportation of substances, will only optimally take place when the cells are within a specific pH range.

Un-fortunately acidosis is very common and eating a modern diet is often the cause. Lifestyle and environmental conditions such as emotional stress, sleep deprivation, smoking, drinking coffee, toxic inhalation (petrol fumes) and medication which many people live with, also assists in the increase of acidity within the body.

Diets rich in highly acidic forming foods such as bread, pasta and sugar based products will most likely cause the cellular pH to drop into the acidic range; below 7.0. If the body becomes too acidic, cells begin to malfunction or die.

An acidic producing diet can cause many health related conditions, such as;

- Lack of energy
- Cancer and tumor growth
- Decreased cell repair
- Increased susceptibility to illness
- Heartburn
- Osteoporosis
- Bloated feeling
- Belching
- Insomnia
- Constipation with diarrhea
- Excessive mucous production
- Age related muscle wasting
- Chronic headaches
- Calcium kidney stones
- Frequent cold and flu attacks

One of the best ways to correct an acid imbalance is through nutrition and lifestyle. In order to achieve and maintain the optimal pH level within the body, a diet should consist of 80% alkaline forming foods and 20% acid forming foods.

The main foods which are alkaline forming are fresh fruits, vegetables, plant based foods (i.e. herbs) and fresh clean water. Whole food supplements such as JuicePlus+, and/or super foods spirulina, barley grass and kelp can assist a diet high in fresh plant based foods, nutritionally and in keeping acidic/alkaline cell balance.

In the course of my medical poking and prodding, I also had a bone scan. At the ripe old age of 36, I have full blown osteoporosis. Not having any estrogen for 8 years sucked the life right out of my bones. Not really a big deal, it is totally treatable. The doctor recommended the newest treatment of Reclast. It is a once a year treatment via IV infusion. Sounded good. I asked about side-effects. The nurse said I would feel like I had the flu for a few days but nothing major.
SHE LIED.

I hate needles to start with, so I was a nervous wreck the day of the treatment. I have never had much luck with IVs. They always have to stick me several times before they can get it started. I lucked out and had an excellent blood sucker nurse. She got my IV started with one stick. Yeah me!!

That night I woke up around 1 am and I though I was dying. My muscles had all contracted and I could not straighted out any part of my body. I had a fever of 102. My poor hubby had to carry me to the bathroom to pee because I couldn't walk. The rest of the night I was miserable. The muscle contractions would not stop and my hubby had to go dig out some blankets because of my chills.

By morning, my muscles seemed to go back to normal. However, my whole body was stiff and very sore. For the next three days, I felt like crap. I called the doctor who informed that it was all normal side effects from the treatment. I am undecided as to whether I will get this treatment again next year or just ask for some pills.

Why is the cure for so many things worse than what was bothering you to start with????

It’s funny how the media can read their own conclusions from recently published research. Take

It's funny how the media can read their own conclusions from recently published research. Take the first paragraph in an article that describes research on the effect of aspirin on mice, done in southern California:

Taking one Aspirin a day may help prevent the bone-wasting disease osteoporosis, according to research by two scientists at the University of Southern California.

The title of the actual study was "Pharmacologic stem cell based intervention as a new approach to osteoporosis treatment in rodents." The investigators were looking into whether or not an observed relation between aspirin use and decreased osteoporosis had a mechanism in preventing death of bone-forming precursor cells.

Nonetheless, aspirin and its possible protective effect in osteoporosis does not surprise me. But osteoporosis is a chronic disease, it is not an acute headache that might be relieved by a drug. There are no deficiencies of aspirin. The naturopathic medicine link: aspirin is probably an inferior choice to a diet rich in essential omega 3 fats. I wrote on this a long time ago on the main web page here.

A quick search on aspirin and osteoporosis yielded another study in J Bone Miner Res. 1996 Jan;11(1):29-35. They found " In age-adjusted analyses, daily use of aspirin or NSAIDs was associated with a 2.3-5.8% increase in BMD of the hip and spine. " BMD stands for bone mineral density.

A search on fish oils (a good source of the essential omega 3 fatty acids) and osteoporosis yielded a better number of studies.

In J Bone Miner Metab. 2008;26(3):241-7. Epub 2008 May 11, researchers also studied mice and found that fish oils improved bone mineral density in rats who had their ovaries removed to simulate menopause. Sounds good so far.

Again in rats, fish oil was found to protect against bone loss induced by an anti-epileptic drug called valproic acid. The mechanism dealt with the modulation of inflammatory cytokines. This makes sense as fish oils, in their promotion of a healthier inflammation, are very useful in painful conditions involving the immune system, and also in cardiovascular disease.

An interesting study, still in rats, published in Biosci Biotechnol Biochem. 2004 Dec;68(12):2613-5, showed that fish oils, but not oils with less essential omega 3 oils, protected against fracture even in calorie and calcium deprived diets.

Not wanting to give all the focus to rats, an observational study in humans showed that cod liver oil probably is not a good choice for osteoporosis. They found that higher doses of cod liver oil were associated with decreased bone mineral density. This is despite the vitamin D in the liver oil (which is too low most of the time). The reason for this is likely to be an excess of vitamin A in cod liver oil, which is why I rarely recommend it.

In the conventional medical journal Obstet Gynecol Surv. 2004 Oct;59(10):722-30; quiz 745-6, a review on women and fish oil was published. The net conclusion was that fish oils are benefical in many situations, including preventing osteoporosis.

There were eight more studies on fish oil that I wanted to summarize, but quickly browsing over them shows they are quite repetitive. The overall summary, if you are a rat or mouse, fish oil most definitely will protect you against osteoporosis. If you are a human, it probably will protect you, but fish oils have only been associated with less osteoporosis. It still might be that fish oils or omega 3 content is a marker of an overall healthier diet, since the major sources of omega 3 oils are in vegetables, and in animals fed vegetables (including grass fed beef, and fish, since the fish eat plankton and algae).

But back to the main point of this post, whenever you read a post about aspirin, you could probably assume the same benefit (or risk!) from taking fish oil, especially if the disease involved is a chronic disease that develops over a long period of time.

Our diets are far, far too rich in grains like wheat, rice, and in animals fed these grains. The grains are rich in omega 6 fats (which by the way are still essential since we don't manufacture them). Our diets are far, far too low in vegetables and animals fed vegetables, which are rich in omega 3 fats. The ratio of omega 6 to 3 in our diet used to be 2:1, now it is typically closer to 15:1.

Omega 6 and omega 3 fats form the basic molecules involved in inflammation. Have too much omega 6 and we will have excessive, unhealthy inflammation, contributing to many diseases including heart disease and osteoporosis. Have plenty of omega 3 and the inflammation will be appropriate, and in fact protective definitely in cardiovascular disease, and probably in osteoporosis.

Muscle Fiction
If you ‘ v been traineeship, here ‘ s a short register of bodybuildin

Muscle Fiction
If you ' v been traineeship, here ' s a short register of bodybuilding fiction.

1. 12 Rep rule

Most weight apprenticeship program include this much repetitions for gaining muscle. The detail is this approach places the muscles with not enough tension for effective muscle gain. High tension e. g. weighty weights provides muscle protuberance in which the muscle grows much larger, cardinal to the maximum gains in tenacity. Having longer tension point boosts the muscle size by generating the structures around the muscle fibers, improving endurance.

The standard prescription of eight to 12 repetitions provides a account but by just using that program all of the occasion, you do not generate the greater tension levels that is provided by the heavier weights and inferior reps, and the longer tension achieved with lighter weights and fresh repetitions. Change the cipher of reps and adjust the weights to stimulate all types of muscle protuberance.

2. Three jell rule

The detail is there ' s naught wrong with three sets but then again there is zero amazing about it either. The cipher of sets you perform should be base on your goals and not on a half - century mature rule. The fresh repetitions you do on an exercise, the fewer sets you should do, and vice versa. This keeps the weight character of repetitions done of an exercise parallel.

3. Three to four exercises per group

The fact is this is a waste of occasion. Combined with twelve reps of three sets, the aggregate figure of reps amount to 144. If your doing this much reps for a muscle group your not doing enough. Instead of doing too many varieties of exercises, try doing 30 to 50 reps. That can be anywhere from 2 sets of 15 reps or 5 sets of 10 reps.

4. My knees, my toes

It is a gym folklore that you “should not rent your knees go gone your toes. " actuality is that liking bold a little too much is other likely a create of injury. In 2003, Memphis University researchers confirmed that knee emphasis was halfway thirty percent higher when the knees are allowed to move beyond the toes during a squat.

But hip weight increased midpoint 10 times or ( 1000 percent ) when the bold motion of the knee was restricted. Because the squatters essential to thin their object immodest and that forces the refine to unload to the lower back.

spindle on your upper something position and less on the knee. Keep the torso in an upright position as much as easy when doing squats and lunges. These reduces the emphasis generated on the hips and back. To stay upright, before squatting, squeeze the shoulder blades together and hold them in that position; and then as you squat, keep the forearms 90 degree to the pave.

5. Lift weights, trail abs

The actuality is the muscles work in groups to stabilize the spine, and the most important muscle group change depending on the kimd of exercise. The transverse abdominis is not always the most important muscle group. Actually, for most exercise, the entity automatically activates the muscle group that are necessary most for support of the spine. So if you pivot only on the transverse abdominis, it can draft wrong muscles and converse the amend muscles. This increases the chance of injury, and reduces the weight that can be lifted.
