Passion's playing field.  In 9^th grade, I decided to try out for football.  Long story short - it ended badly - very, very badly!  I only hung in there for about 30 minutes and after writing this blog, I consider those 30 minutes well spent.  Pursuing your passion is just like playing football.  If passion is the name of the game, then money is the 50 yard line.  If you have passion for what you do, the ball is in your possession.  But if you lose the ball, it can take a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to reclaim it.  The following statement may be tough to swallow, but it's no less true.  Money is the line that often determines whether you love or hate what you do. 

The downside of doing what you love.  Think about it.  Passion drives you to do what you love so well that more and people want you to help them out.  The increased demand causes your time to become more valuable and you start charging people for your services.  But the moment that you start getting paid for doing what you love, things change.  It feels like passion is holding a knife to your throat commanding you to do what you love.  It's hard to continue loving what you do under these conditions.  So the passion that fueled your love quickly turns to hate.  When your passion for what you once loved heads south, do not give up.  Just start doing something else that you love, for free. 

Work for free?!  Yes, I did say "work for free".  And no, I'm not crazy.  If you have been hanging in there with us, you'll remember the first thing I ever said was "It's not about the money..."  Here's why. As an employee, you work because your boss pays you.  In fact, most of the stuff you put up with on the job is because...your boss pays you.  But starting out as a self-employed person, you have to give your time away.  In most cases, this happens quite naturally.  Most self-employed people will tell you that they became self-employed, not by design, but because they started doing what they love - for free.  More people started asking for their help and they were in business before they knew it.

Choose your own charity.  In building a part-time business, there are usually three situations where it makes sense to work for free: 

1. Education
2. Marketing
3. Give Back

When you find that you're losing your passion in one area, start by giving your time away in another area.  Now it has to be something that you love to do or you will feel the crunch.  By giving your time away, you add to your skill set.  Ridiculously amazing things happen when you give the right things to the right people. 

Handling the temptation of job security.  Recently, I discovered something that cracks me up.  Every time I think about getting a full-time job, my business increases.  This is not by happenstance.  I see a picture of what I want the final product of my business to look like.  And a lot of times, I get so excited that I go after the final product without detailing the steps required to produce the mental picture that I have.  This is the big picture mentality.  But when I think of getting a job, I think about what I can do right now that someone can pay me for.  That's the bottom line mentality.

Balance the big picture with the bottom line.  If you're an employee interested in working for yourself, the bottom line mentality is not enough.  Chances are, you report to work and do the same thing every day.  Sure, you may earn a lot of money doing that.  But if you're looking to start a business on the side, it takes more than a bottom line mentality.  You have to see the big picture of how you want your life to be.  Then make practical everyday steps towards what you see.  Start by writing a list of what you love to do.  Then go through the list and figure out which activities people will pay you for.  You'll be surprised by what you come up with.   

When what you love starts to turn into what you hate, find something else that you love to do and do it for free.  That will keep your passion in check.  A lot of people do what they love for free.  Many more do what they love as a part-time job.  The ultimate career opportunity is to do what you love and get paid for it.  The challenge is continuing to love what you do once you start getting paid.

Take yourself out of it and open your eyes and your heart to much less draining possibilities.

While we are in the Castro... To the man who just moved his new boyfriend into his condo and hasn't seen him in 2 weeks but deep down knows he'll turn up when he runs out of cash...NO! This is not love! This is not anything! And it's costing you a fortune.

Now that I have addressed every sexuality! Money is not the only thing we invest. We invest our time, patience, trust, dignity, emotions, SOUL. What is your return? Familiar Abuses Seen in Latest Finance Crisis

Federal prosecutors say that while the securities behind many of the troubles battering global markets are complex and new, some of the alleged abuses that investigators are uncovering look very familiar.

Benton Campbell, U.S. attorney for New York's Eastern District, said on Thursday that his office has come across instances of material misrepresentation, insider trading and valuation discrepancies. "The more things change, the more they stay the same," he said in remarks at an American Bar Association securities-fraud conference.

Mr. Campbell's Brooklyn office brought cases against Bear Stearns fund managers earlier this year and is working on cases involving American International Group Inc., among others.

An AIG spokesman declined to comment. The government, in its indictment of the Bear managers, didn't implicate the firm.

Mr. Campbell worked on the Justice Department's investigation into the collapse of energy-trading company Enron Corp. in 2001, and he said the problems uncovered today remind him of those found in that probe. He said one type of fraud under investigation currently involves cases where investors were deceived about the type of securities they were investing in, or the risk involved in making investments.

To address complaints by business groups and lawmakers of heavy-handed tactics by investigators, the Justice Department is adopting new guidelines barring prosecutors from asking companies to disclose certain attorney-client privileged information, said Deputy Attorney General Mark Filip in a separate conference session. Prosecutors also won't be allowed to consider whether a company is paying legal fees of employees under investigation, or has entered into joint-defense agreements with employees, in evaluating its level of cooperation.

"Cooperation can often be in the best interest of both the government and the corporation," Mr. Filip said. "It enables the government to identify wrongdoers quickly and bring them to justice, and it spares the corporation from lengthy and potentially costly business disruptions."
