By Jim Connolly
There are various stories all over the Internet, regarding Steve Jobs and his health

By Jim Connolly
There are various stories all over the Internet, regarding Steve Jobs and his health. After Jobs appeared at this year's WWDC, looking underweight and pretty frail - the Internet started buzzing with claims and counter claims regarding how healthy or ill Steve Jobs is.

The bottom line is this. None of us know what's wrong with him (if anything.) Leave Steve Jobs alone, I believe his health really has nothing to do with any of us. If you are an Apple investor and you are worried, sell your stock - otherwise, wish him well and focus on his work, his company and his beautifully designed, over-priced products.

I am not an Apple fanboy (I'm writing this post on a linux box) - I just think health should be a personal issue. That's why I was plesantly surprised today to see Jason Calacanis call Newsweek's Dan Lyons 'low class' for his vile, shit-awful post about Jobs' health on his blog.

SHOULD STEVE JOBS HEALTH BE OPEN TO PUBLIC DEBATE?
I wanted to know, so I asked some of the biggest names in 'technology blogging and technology news for their opinion. Here's what they told me!

Robert Scoble just told me; "Jim, Steve Jobs is CEO of a public company. He should come clean about his health. It's something that GREATLY affects his investors."

Jason Calacanis says; "seems like folks are mostly pro Steve Jobs having privacy re:health issues. Wonder if this is split by those who have dealt with cancer + not?"

I asked Om Malik from the superb Gigaom.com blog if he thought Steve Jobs' health should be left alone by bloggers. He told me;"Yes, I think it should" Om has also said he will blog about this!

Lance Ulanoff, Editor at PC Magazine.com told me; "Apple's a public company and Jobs' is the face and brain of it. His health and ability to lead goes right to the bottom line."

If you are in any way involved in the internet, whether as a skilled web user or an employee of a technology company, then you might recognize the name Im In Like With You. The network first hit the internet in 2006 as a private beta website and was under a virtual lock and key. Since that day we have seen an expansion that no one could have expected. Many new features have been added since including the launch of the game of Blockles and, more recently, Dinglepop, Draw My Thing and Gemmers. The launch of a fifth game, Balloono, is anticipated for release soon. The site also earned a spot on PC Magazine's Top 100 Undiscovered Web Sites list. Blockles has been played over three million times for nearly 200,000 hours and Draw My Thing, while having only been in existence for a few months, has already racked up over one million hours of gameplay. Just when we might have thought that this website could not get much better or more popular it managed to raise a whopping 1.5 million dollar paycheck for only the second time since its launch. The news has only just begun to spread and more is to be said about it. What has been said (by founder Charles Forman), is no less than a joke. Or could spending the paycheck on a 'large scale party' be the indicator for a much bigger addition to the website? We have yet to find out.

I think that this is what I’ll call all of these examples … it just makes life simple. T

I think that this is what I'll call all of these examples ... it just makes life simple. The example this week comes from Ziff Davis Media publication PC Week:

I'm pretty sure that I unsubscribed from this electronic newsletter, The PC Magazine Buying Guide: Networking, last week, when I ruthlessly pruned subscriptions from my UW email. But maybe not.

The image above is a screenshot of what happened when I clicked the "unsubscribe" link in today's email.

Notice:

I can't read the "you have been unsubscribed" text ... although I was able to, moments before the popup advert and javascript window appeared.

I can "close" the browser window only by clicking "cancel" or "ok" on the in-your-face survey button. Unfortunately, I didn't capture that "greyed out" close-window button in my screenshot.

I'm unsubscribing from a free electronic newsletter, and ZD is trying to get me to pay money to subscribe to a print magazine! If I don't want something "free," why would I want to pay for a magazine?

Although I think of ZD as having a stranglehold on the tech magazine market, it seems I'm mistaken. Just last month, ZD emerged from "its Chapter 11 bankruptcy case, [and] can now get back to the business of running a struggling tech publishing company."

This sort of "advertising" is unlikely to help that cause, IMO.

UPDATED:

I found another ZD publication in my inbox ... and I know why it was still there. Unlike the PC Magazine "unsub" links, which knows exactly which publication your email is attached to, and which truly "unsubs" you on click ... the CIO Minute newsletter takes you to a subscription page! Nothing pre-checked! So you have to find the newsletter, scroll to the bottom of the page, type in your email address, and click unsubscribe.

But the reason I've added the CIO Minute to this post is the image below: there is an interstitial ad that you have to wade through before the sub/unsub page! I know that there is no such thing as a free lunch, but this ... <head shake>.

NOTE: These guys launched in October 2006 and this is the first I've heard of them. Not that...that means anything in and of itself (except maybe I've been snoozin?)but it surprises me a little - actually a LOT - because 1) Amazon has invested in the company 2) I buy a TON of stuff from Amazon and they've never mentioned Shelfari to me and 3) I own what sometimes seems like a very BIG boatload of books and I guess I'm just surprised this is the first time I've bumped into them.

The interface is pretty cool. You can build your own widgets to include on your blog (the WordPress widget doesn't work as I'm writing this but...) and well, the concept is just kinda nifty. You can even build in your Amazon affiliate ID (big surprise!) to make a few pennies if someone buys a book from Amazon that's on your shelf!

Guess the revenue model doesn't JUMP out at me - which is good for me - not sure how long these guys will be around without 1) revenue and 2) ummmm...ahhhhh...let me think...what's it called again?

I don't know how many times I have to say this:

DON'T DO IT.

DON'T DO IT AT WORK.

JUST DON'T.

STOP.

I almost feel sorry for disciplining & firing people who operate out of a hermeneutic of stupidity. It's not that these employees are horrible or evil human beings; they are just clueless and assume the no-harm-no-foul rule.

"What's it matter to you if I look at porn & spend my days on E*Trade? It's not hurting anyone."

No matter how many times you ask your employees to sign a form & testify to their awareness of the company's technology policies, they will claim ignorance and assume that no one is looking. It's a never-ending battle against idiocracy; I fear that Human Resources is losing.

Believe me now and hear me later: there will come a time when the default assumption is that all Americans suffer from slight & subtle mental impairments. Good luck working in Human Resources because your entire workforce will be covered under the ADA.

VS

Don't bother to look for a post called “Free Software Advantages #1” because there isn't one. Free is the first advantage to free software (like these 157 programs from PC Magazine). Now we're looking for other advantages, and #2 on that list follows my advice posted on Network World called “Task, Process, Tools.”

Why are many software utilities written? To solve a particular problem. My “Task, Process, Tools,” advice steps through the way smart small businesses choose the tools they use, including software. They carefully examine a task, define the process used to accomplish that task, and then pick the tools needed for the process. Tools, including technology of all kinds, are the last link in that chain, not the first.

Software developers have tasks to examine and processes to define just like the rest of us. When there are no good tools around, they have the advantage of being able to write the tools needed to perform the process to accomplish the task.

Often they share those tools so others facing the same problem can use their tool. The common feeling among developers I know is that people helped them in the past, and they want to pass on that help. Pay It Forward, if you want a preachy movie example.

So that's my free software advantage #2 – these programs often solve problems in ways no one else has. If you have the same problem the developer had, the work the developer did may solve your problem as well. If so, do something nice to keep the chain going.
