I love animals, I really do...this is why I believe it is very important to use the proper containment methods if you keep animals. Cages and leashes are not cruel, they save lives. The only thing saving the life of your free roaming Peacock today was my husband's compassion for animals and strong desire not to fuck up our car. I know that you use no containment for your Peafowl as I see them roaming all over your yard day after day. While you live outside of town, the state road that goes past your home is VERY busy. We, and many others, drive past your home daily, and typically see your Peacocks running free all over the side of the road, and some times right in the middle of the road! Your Peafowl have no sense of boundries, and will not stay confined to your yard, despite your wish that they do so. It's as my father told me when I was young, "You can wish in one hand and shit in the other, see which one gets filled first."

I'd like to suggest that you buy a fence. You could also build an Aviary in which to contain the Peafowl. They are beautiful birds, but when I see them smashed along the side of the road with the deer, coons, and opossums...they are anything but beautiful. If you can not afford to do either of these things, I suggest that you give the birds to someone more capable of caring for them.

I don't know why you keep Peafowl, nor do I care. I do care however that your gross neglegance is endangering the lives of animals who depend on you to keep them safe. Do you not understand that the only thing keeping them alive is your care? The birds aren't native species to Indiana, and without your feeding and housing, they wouldn't survive. These animals depend on you, and you are letting them down.

The next time I see one of your birds in the road, I am going to call animal control and report that you are neglecting your birds.

But now, living on a property that borders on to a nature reserve, I understand why farmers hate foxes. They devastate fucking everything! Here (in chronological order, spanning a few years) is the story of my family's adventure with one fox. It's like the script of an Oliver Stone movie.

• 5 yrs: we move up from Sydney, and find a lovely pair of peacocks sitting on our front lawn. (for the sake of correctness, only male birds are referred to as "peacocks." The females are "peahens.") The landlords explain that the peafowl aren't pets but aren't entirely wild either. They hang around the house in exchange for seed. This was majorly awesome. We had peacocks in our back yard!
• 4 yrs: one of the birds (the peahen) mysteriously vanishes. She stops visiting the house, and the male is left alone.
• 3.5 yrs: the male peacock also disappears. Around the same time, we find some old bird bones lying in a clump somewhere, with a few tattered feathers. We suspect this was the female's remains.
• At the same time, we notice a red fox on our property. Our father has photographs. It's gigantic, almost the size of one of our neighbour's guard dogs. There was little doubt that it had killed our peafowl.
• 3 yrs: our beloved cat Misty dies of natural causes. We bury her in the valley next to our house. In less than a week, the grave has been disturbed and our cat's body has vanished. Her remains were never found.
• 2 yrs: to save money, our family bought 6 or so egg-laying hens. Our landlords build a little hen house for them. Because it's small, we let them free-range over the property during the day.
• Over the next couple of months, our Eiserbrown hens are slaughtered one by one. One night, only 5 of them come back, then later, only 4, and so on. This was distressing but there was little we could do. Eventually, all of our hens are dead. The fox is never caught.
• 1 yr: the red fox is sighted again. We receive a new cat as a gift, and decide to keep her indoors.
• 6 mos: we get 6 new Eiserbrown hens. This time, we build a run next to the hen house. This gives them room to walk, while at the same time keeping them safe from the fox...or so we think.
• 4 mos: one night, the fox gets inside the hen run. We had covered the perimeter with large stones, but the fox pulled them away with its paws and dug its way in. It mauls one hen and carries another away into the night. The injured hen is paralysed and in a lot of pain, so I kill it with my hatchet.
• We realise that if we don't act, the fox will kill our hens one by one like before. So, we took unorthodox action, and allowed the hens to sleep indoors during the night (the fox wouldn't attack during the day). We would put them in boxes in the garage overnight and put them back in the pen the next morning.
• 2 mos: this gets annoying, so we spend about 10 hours in one day digging around the henhouse, laying down steel mesh, and covering the mesh with dirt.  Now, we thought, surely the fox can't dig in and the hens can live in the hen house again.
• Yesterday: I look at the hen house and the steel mesh has been partly uncovered and has also been pulled back and bent in many places. WHAT. The fox is still trying to get in!

It's like being stuck in one of those nightmares where you run and run but can never get away. Hopefully our hens will be safe, but it's scary that a single animal can be that persistent and relentless over a five year period of time.

Once, in my father's time, you could earn money by killing foxes and selling their pelts. Not any more. With stricter gun laws and harsher hunting measures, the population of foxes (and other wild predators) is increasing. They really are a hazard to native forms of wildlife, and as we have discovered they kill and eat practically everything with fur or feathers. We need to find out some way to kill the bastard. How long do the fuckers live, anyway?

So, we decided to feed the wildlife. Yes, we know we shouldn't have.  We did anyway - blame the rebel within.  We choose the most extreme sport - feeding wild fowl! Behold! The dangerous PEAFOWL!

Seriously, these animals are adorable and very colorful.  They will eat out of your hand, that's how tame they are.

Actually called the Indian Blue Peafowl, it's... well... indian. And there are... three, four? that we saw at Kew... but then we only saw one peahen. There must be an awful lot of competition.

 después de unos meses, ya podemos analizar un poco como ha ido la temporada de cria y analizar lo que se ha hecho bién y mal.

 Comenzamos la temporada con grandes expectativas como cada año y la verdad es que al final ha ido todo muy bién, no hemos sufrido enfermedades y tampoco ha habido grandes bajas.

Nuestros pavos han estado poniendo hasta mediados de Agosto, por lo que hemos conseguido un buen numero de huevos y de pavitos.

 La verdad es que se puede decir que los pavos Ala Negra y los Azules crían con gran facilidad, incluso estando con mas pavos dentro del aviario, en cambio los otros llamense Blanco, Opal, Violeta, Cameo, etc... necesitan de un espacio para ellos solos y de esa forma poder llevar a cabo un paraemiento tranquilo con su pareja y a su vez ella pueda poner los huevos con tranquilidad, tenemos comprobado que para poder obtener buenos resultados es necesario que esten separados unos de otros.

ahora os enseño algunas fotos de los ultimos pavos que nos nacieron, deben tener ahora unos 3 o 4 meses y son Azules, ya podeis ver que estan empezando a cojer color, también os enseño una de otros pavos ya mas adultos.

Ahora con la llegada del invierno cada noche nos preocupamos que tanto los pavos nacidos este año como sus padres pasen la noche dentro del cobertizo, ya que si por si ellos fuese dormirian a la intemperie con lo que el riesgo que puedan coger resfriados o problemas de respiración es importante. Siempre que se pueda es recomendable que duerman calentitos y a la mañana siguiente ya saldrán a la calle si quieren.

 Bueno dentro de poco ya seguire escribiendo un poco mas de este apasionante mundo de la cria de los Pavos Reales y otras aves.

voy a seguir hablándoos un poco de nuestros animales.

Bién ya han pasado entre 6 y 8 semanas desde que nacieron las crias de guinea Vulturina, como podreís ver en la foto ya han perdido todo el pelito blanco, ahora són completamente ralladas y se puede apreciar como el color de la parte de la cabeza es un tono mas blanco, el cual es de suponer que acabará cayendo para dejar la parte de la cabeza completamente desnuda. Ahora las tenemos en un corral en compañía de las crias de Pavo Real y de Faisan Plateado, todas ellas se llevan muy bién.

Las crias de Pavo Real también están creciendo muy bien, ahora deben tener unas 10 semanas, ya se les puede apreciar una pequeña cresta que les hace muy simpaticos. Os adjunto algunas fotos para que podaís comprobar lo bonitos que estan ahora.

Nuetras hembras de pavo real han vuelto a empezar la puesta, eso es debido a que aún no hace un calor muy sofocante y se sienten con ganas. Haber si con un poco de suerte ponen 5 o 6 huevos mas cada una.

 Os pongo también unas fotos de un macho de Pavo Real Opal, para que veaís como són.

ahora voy a hablaros un poco sobre los pavos reales, sus variedades, su incubación, etc…

Pues bien, para empezar hay que distinguir entre dos tipos de pavos, los Muticus y los Cristatus.

Muticus hay los siguientes:

     ·         Muticus-Muticus(Verde de Java)

     ·         Muticus-Imperator(Indo-Chino)

     ·         Muticus-Specifier(Borneo)

Este tipo de pavos tienen la cresta totalmente de punta y además poseen un cuerpo mas estilizado que los cristatus.

Cristatus hay los siguientes:

     ·         Azul

     ·         Ala Negra

     ·         Blanco

     ·         Cameo

     ·         Bronze

     ·         Violeta

     ·         Charcoal

     ·         Opal

Since the "peacock incident", I've been researching peacocks on the internet.  I've discovered 2 things - 1) The female is called the peahen.  The male is called the pea'cock' - now maybe it is because of genitalia, but I think otherwise and 2) pea'cock's are cocks!!! - recently some other small boy was the victim of an attack at the Oregon Zoo.  Cage the COCKS, I say!!!
