Jill Sobule (of the old-school “I Kissed a Girl” fame) has a point in this recent Huffin

Jill Sobule (of the old-school "I Kissed a Girl" fame) has a point in this recent Huffington Post blog entry: what's missing when you download a song/album from iTunes or some other music service is all that cool information you would normally get if you bought the CD and read the booklet. Who played drums on Track 5? Whom would the artist like to thank? Little tidbits like that just aren't there in most cases (although I hasten to add that many artists have now made digital booklets available for download, but you usually have to buy the whole album in order to get those).

From an artists' standpoint, I can see why Sobule and others miss the booklet--that's where the credit lies. All the studio musicians and lesser-known band members' work, while still shining in the sound of the song itself, doesn't get any recognition in the fixed form of a text. And how many fans are going to be interested and thoughtful enough to do the research to find out who played what on which song?

Well, me, actually--although I'd rather someone save me the trouble. I'm one of those dorky people who sits down and reads the entire CD booklet when she buys a new CD because I want to know everything I can (Did you know that Dave Grohl plays drums on Pete Yorn's "For Us" from the disc Nightcrawler? Do you even know who Pete Yorn is? Because if you don't, you should). As a recent immigrant to iTunes, I hadn't even realized I was missing studio credits and liner notes because most of what I was downloading were "replacement CDs"--works by artists I'd bought years ago when albums were still on cassette. It's only lately when I've downloaded a full CD that was released a few years ago that I'm only just now getting around to purchasing (now that I can do so with a click of a mouse, considering I live in a town with one small record store), that I've started to realize what Sobule bemoans in her blog.

Maybe it's only music trivia dorks like me who miss the booklet, and maybe it's folks like me who will eventually help to keep the physical CD alive. I only hope that more artists catch on to the digital booklet phenomenon. Because some of us actually do care that Dave Matthews' solo album was recorded at Stone Gossard's studio in Seattle and to whom Radiohead dedicated In Rainbows.

i’m not sure if i have much to say right now. right now i guess i just feel very lucky to be w

i'm not sure if i have much to say right now. right now i guess i just feel very lucky to be where i am. i just watched a film last night called "The Daughter of Keltoum." it's a french movie from a few years ago. it's a fantastic movie! the cinematography is spectacular! that's partly due to its filming in algeria which is kind of other-worldly compared to new england. the film touched on some of the issues in algeria, and one european womans eye opening experience when she goes from switzerland to algeria to find her birth mother.

one of the biggest struggles in algeria seems to be finding enough water. we take this for granted in the united states. anywhere and everywhere you go there is an abundant source of water. we have warm water, cold water, purified filtered water, heck we've got vitamin water. it's depressing to see how women are treated there. women are impregnated so that the child can be sold for water. for the life of me i can't understand this at all. i've always been taught that human life is precious, and something to fight for, to treasure. it's a radically different culture: who am i to judge?

plus recently i found out that someone who i talk to on occasion was outed at his school. he's now having to deal with the mutters and the stares, and all the things he shouldn't have to. i'm so lucky that the friends i told before i came out were such good people, who kept my secret. they encouraged me to be myself, and told me that they didn't think of me any differently. their unconditional acceptance gave me the courage to come out. that's the way it's supposed to be. it's a very personal decision, not one you can easily go back on. you can't just close the door again and go back into the closet.

i've been on netflix instant a lot lately... i watched day zero the other day which was really interesting. there were three story-lines going on at the same time. the premiss of the movie was that the draft had been reinstated because of the war on terror. it follows three recruits in the thirty days they have before they have to report. it deals with the struggle of picking up your life so quickly, knowing you might not come back to it. it had a really great cast including elijah wood playing a scrawny metro little indie writer, and ginnifer goodwin was also really good. we're really lucky that we have all the freedoms we do. i have the freedom to be who i am, and not have to hide it. i have the freedom to worship any way i chose, say the things i want, believe what i want to believe.

for some reason all of this makes me think of this song. i have no idea why, but i just really love this song anyways.

pete yorn - strange condition
[audio http://hemachandra.net/files/Pete%20Yorn%20-%20Strange%20Condition.mp3]

like i said i don't have much to say. i will be marching tomorrow for memorial day in the marching band. part of me feels really proud that i can be a part of such a ceremony (it's especially prominent after seeing day zero). the other selfish part of me wishes i could just have my day off and sleep in (or do all the projects i've been neglecting for weeks). anyways i hope all of you have a great memorial day, summer is just around the bend. take care :)

peace ~ dave

Ben Folds - "Fred Jones Part 2"

Bizarre way to start off the day. There's a lot of doom and gloom talk in the newsroom I work in about "the future." Cost-cutting. New missions. Solutions. Transformations. These are all corporate psycho-babble terms for layoffs and putting the veterans out to pasture and such. I shivered a little when this song about a guy getting fired from a paper started playing. I'll just let some lyrics talk:

Fred sits alone at his desk in the dark
There's an awkward young shadow that waits in the hall
He's cleared all his things and he's put them in boxes
Things that remind him: 'Life has been good'
Twenty-five years
He's worked at the paper
A man's here to take him downstairs
And I'm sorry, Mr. Jones
It's time
There was no party, there were no songs
'Cause today's just a day like the day that he started
No one is left here that knows his first name

Lucero -"What Else Would You Have Me Be?"

First Lucero song I ever heard. Played a 30-second clip of it on iTunes and was hooked. Still my favorite song they've done.

The Fags - "Rockstar"

Big Star - "Thirteen"

Valve - "Part of the Catch Phrase"

What the hell happened to Casey Diiorio, anyway? I heard he was helping Zac Maloy engineer records, but that's all I've heard. Ah, Google says he has a studio in Fort Worth. Cool. His old band (Valve, for those who don't know) is one of my favorite DFW bands of all time. This song and "Upper West Coast" are legendary to a few dozen of us, I'm sure.

The Jayhawks - "The Eyes of SarahJane"

Head Automatica - "Lying Through Your Teeth"

Shuggie Otis - "Not Available"

Pete Yorn - "Committed"

RAWK SAWNG OF THE DAY / BEST BAND YOU'VE PROBABLY NEVER HEARD: J Roddy Walston and The Business - "Rock and Roll the Second"

The night before SXSW 2008 kicked off, this band knocked us on our asses at Andy's in Denton. I was drowning Amstels with caffeine king Matt Holmes downstairs when we decided to labor up the staircase to see who was making all the noise. We were met with what sounded and looked like Angus Young rocking great balls of fire with Jerry Lee Lewis. Two dozen faces were melted that night. Band name is hot, too.

Travis - "Safe"

Bush - "Letting the Cables Sleep"

Don't hate.

Jeff Buckley - "New Year's Prayer"

So good it's scary. I don't like listening to this song in the dark. Not one bit.

Sloan - "Step on it, Jean"

Paul McCartney - "Feet in the Clouds"

Breakdown:

14 songs

all during commute (dropped someone off at airport during rush hour. Idiotfest on the highway)

So I bought The Magpies CD at their gig Tuesday. Today I put it in the Powerbook, imported the songs and put the disc back in its sleeve. Then I stared at the sleeve for a few seconds, picked it up, stared at it some more and put it back down. Then I stared some more. I sighed and dropped a depressed F-bomb when it hit me that I'll probably never pick that disc up again. After years of resistance, I've been dominated by the digital revolution. The hundreds of CDs on the rack in the living room just collect dust. No use for them anymore. I really don't know what to think about it. I mean, I once managed a damn CD store. I've had thousands of CDs manufactured for bands I've worked with. Sold them all across the country. Now it's all obsolete. I'm reminded of the wise words of a hillbilly philosopher: "Tough titty, said the kitty, but the milk is still good!"

Valve - “Forever More”
Lucero - “San Francisco”
A breezy, booze-stained nigh

Valve - "Forever More"

Lucero - "San Francisco"

A breezy, booze-stained night at SXSW 2008. Free beers everywhere. Whiskey, too. A sloppy crowd of tattooed cowpunk types was piling into the backyard amphitheater at Red Eyed Fly. Seemed like the perfect storm for my first Lucero live experience. I was pumped.

We dropped anchor in front of a pool of 24 oz. Lone Star beers and plowed through a few of those suckers before Lucero hit the stage (later, the bass player would literally hit the stage). I was nice and numb by the time Ben Nichols and Co. stumbled in, but I'd soon witness a staggering debacle of drunken chaos that would make every booze-fueled embarrassment of my short life seem like child's play.

Nichols made it through about two songs (and took three shots) before his voice gave out. He knew it was gone, so he didn't bother trying to sing. Just cracked an "I'm guilty, but I don't care" smile and shook his head at the rest of the band. They found his sorry condition equally hilarious, even as the guitarist swayed back and forth like a seesaw and drooled. Yeah, drooled. What a mess of a man. The bass player knew he was in a worthless state and had propped himself up against the back wall of the stage as a precaution. But he'd still stumble forward from time to time for no apparent reason. Eventually, he fell face down. Twice. The drummer was actually pretty solid and was clearly the only remotely sober one of the group. Nichols couldn't sing, but he managed to to tell the crowd at least half a dozen times that he'd been "drinking since two in the afternoon." And then he'd take another shot and light another cigarette. Completely shameless. The trainwreck was twice as entertaining as the few moments they actually hit stride, for better or worse.

Only took about three songs for us to proclaim Lucero the Drunkest Band of All Time. That's a dubious distinction considering the folks I was with at the show. Until then, the Drunkest Band of All Time title was held by The Feds thanks to a show they put on a few years back that we all attended. It ended with a droning encore that included no actual songs but was highlighted by Matt Wright playing his guitar with the penis of a Bowling For Soup roadie who had wandered onstage.

We stumbled out of the venue midway through the Lucero set (but not until one of my comrades smoked some hash with an attorney in plain view of 500 people - ah, Austin) and saw the Ludo clan on the street. We mobbed them, and I mumbled some hogwash about Wilco to Tim Convy (fellow Wilco obsessive and Ludo Moog man). That's pretty much the last thing I remember about the Lucero show, aside from hijacking my buddy's Ford Contour and driving to Jack in the Box to order ten tacos at 4:30 a.m.

Thanks, Lucero. See you in Arkansas on May 1.

Fugazi - "Suggestion"

Smashing Pumpkins - "Luna"

Doves - "A House"

Head Automatica - "Please, Please, Please (Young Hollywood)"

Jesse Malin - "Lucinda"

Tom Waits - "So It Goes"

Glassjaw - "Trailer Park Jesus"

George Harrison - "Thanks for the Pepperoni"

Head Automatica - "Laughing at You"

Lots of Daryl Palumbo in the shuffle today...

Pete Yorn - "Just Another"

It's 11:12 a.m. and I want metal. I get Pete Yorn instead. I get a Pete Yorn song I hate. Not wise to deprive a man of his metal, you pansy anti-metal iPod. Grow balls.

Josh Rouse - "Carolina"

Damnit to hell! I'm in no mood to listen to a song that begins: "Down in Tennessee / sits a girl alone." I love this song, just can't stomach it right now. But I'll suffer through it; maybe I'll calm down.

Damnit again: "In the Nashville sky / sits a diamond bright." Fuck that nonsense. Next.

Jeff Buckley - "Back in N.Y.C."

Singer-songwriter invasion 2008. Oh well. At least this song has some nuts to it.

The Thrills - "Saturday Night"

Attention all Affliction-shirt-wearing, Jagerbombing dudebros: "Broken beer bottles / thrown like American footballs / Hey, it's just jocks high on hormones / Is this what they call hate on a Saturday night?" Yes, yes it is.

Social Distortion - "Ring of Fire"

Pearl Jam - "Glorified G"

AC/DC - "You Shook Me All Night Long"

Minus the Bear - "Pig War"

Mastodon - "Bladecatcher"

Finally. 1:40 p.m. is the best moment of the day thus far. Metal makes me happy when I'm stuck at the little gray desk in the big black tower.

AC/DC - "Back in Black"

Blue October - "You Make Me Smile"

Big Star - "In The Street"

The Jayhawks - "Smile"

Danny Grady - "Stay Gold"

Yet another D Grady song that'll never see the light of day. Depressing. One of the best songs I've heard in the past year, and I'm one of a dozen people who has heard it. Not right.

Kill Radio - "Raised on Whip Cream"

Rose Hill Drive - "Off to the Games"

Little League Hero - "The Trick"

LLH's last show ever is this weekend. I've been going to way too many "last shows" lately, it seems.

Starsailor - "At the End of a Show"

Okkervil River - "Missing Children"

Band of Horses - "Is There A Ghost"

Breakdown:

30 songs

2 during commute to work

26 at work

4 during commute home

There are four dead people (that I know of) in this playlist. Two died of cancer, one drowned in a river and the other drowned in booze. On that note, I'm off for a night of second-hand smoking, swimming and heavy drinking. A moron once told me the only way to beat death is at his own game. Apparently, I listened.

Oh yeah, it's really happening on monday!!!

Ok, this music monday is all about an artist named Pete Yorn. I have to be honest, I thought that, to me, Pete Yorn was going to be a fad, something i would just listen to while it was cool then throw it away. I started listening to him about 8 or 9 years ago and I thought it was sweet, but i mainly started listening to him because everyone else was. I wasn't super into his music, but i kept on listening to it. I remember jamming his cd "musicforthemorningafter" all summer one year.. hanging by the pool, cruising with the windows down, on the boat at the lake... ect. For some reason that summer just didn't feel right if ole' Pete wasn't jammin in the stereo.

Recently, i posted about this a few weeks ago, i discovered that i was listening to the same artist way too often and needed to broaden my musical interests. So I decided to put my ipod on shuffle. I know it doesn't seem like that would broaden my musical interests that much, but i only listen to about 10% of the stuff that is on there, so it is a step. Anyway, I skipped through a lot of stuff, but anytime a Pete Yorn song came on I wouldn't skip it. I still remembered all the words and could remember what i was doing while listening to this stuff. Maybe my opinion is flawed because of this but I really like his stuff. I believe that "musicforthemorningafter" is his best cd by far, and I definitely think you should check it out.

Pete plays all the instruments on the cd himself, he writes and produces most of it as well. He is a very talented dude! I love how catchy the melodies are and how original his sound is. Its kinda folk rock/indie/rock/with a slight hint of country. I love it. check out the video below.

If any of you know me at all, you know I LOVE to find new music. It is a passion, almost obsession of mine. Music speaks to my soul. I love a song that makes me feel an emotion: happiness, love, sorrow, pain, confusion, joy, or makes me want to sing or dance. It's amazing how music can reaffirm and even accentuate the emotions I am feeling.

I have decided that it is time that I share my new music with all of you. I am constantly on the lookout for new artists and new songs, so I will pick a favorite 'Song of the Week'. (For this first post, there are 2 songs instead of just 1)

I was actually just searching for something awesome to start out with, and I came across Lose You by Pete Yorn. I couldn't find a way to embed the song, so here is the music video. Beautiful song.

And, I found this song, Much Farther to Go, by Rosie Thomas as well. I instantly fell in love with the guitar in this song.

I have no problems admitting to my adoration for the music of Pete Yorn. I know all the words to Strange Condition by heart and I can remember getting excited just hearing it at a Payless last summer. But when it comes to his success it hurts my head to think about it. He's a talented, hard working, outstanding song writer but hasn't really touched mainstream success. Now I'm not complaining or anything like that but I figure that out of all the musicians that I listen to, he would be the frontrunner for superstar stardom. But then again there's no account to taste when it comes to mainstream top 40 rock and he nor his record label probably isn't into paying the radio channels to play his stuff. Enough with the venting though. Below are a harder version of his hit, an amazing duet with Natalie Maines of Dixie Chicks fame, a live version of a slower song and a cover of an Elvis song. All are fantastic and should make a an instant fan out of you.
