I photographed Peter and Julyana’s wedding this weekend a Chapel Dulcinea http://www.chapeldulcinea.org/. What a great place! This is a free wedding chapel in Austin TX.

This is the second wedding I have photographed at this chapel. I think it is wonderful that the owner is such a believer in love that he welcomes people to have their wedding at this beautiful location for free.

Before the ceremony started Julyana could not wait to get to her husband to be. When she got to the alter it was very easy to see how in love they are. You could see the love it in their eyes and it showed in the portraits.

At Chapel Dulcinea it is tradition to ring the bell at the end of the ceremony. Well, at this wedding the bell was locked so they could not get it to move, but Peter was not going to just let it go. J He worked it out by pulling the rope and making the bell rock until the bell finally rang. It was a great moment, everyone was cheering and laughing.

Good job Peter!

Thank you Peter and Julyana for letting me be a part of your beautiful wedding!

Today Mom, Dad, Michael and I went to....THE RENAISSANCE FAIRE! I didn't shut up the entire car ride there, and was binking michael on the nose with my hairsticks. Mom took them and made me promise not to bink him on the nose, so of course instead i started bonking ROFL. It took about 45 minutes to get there, then it was about a 45 minute walk It has to be one of my most favourite places ever. I think I could live there and just die happy, haha. Everyone is kooky, quirky, and excited. The line for tickets wasn't so bad, and we had coupons for $10 adult tickets (aka 50% off pretty much.) At the entrance was the "prayer circle" inside which Friar Tuck and 2 other monks pranced about. We did the "hallelujah" wave and they formed a few prayer circles around some of the people in line ("Woahhh ohhh livin on a prayer! Take my hand we'll make it i swear Wooooahhh Ohhh We're Livin on a Prayer!! Aaahhhh meeeeeennnnnn" ) and then Friar Tuck passed out and we had to yell to wake him up. And that was just the entrance!

Inside it's full of magical, mystical things. There are people wandering around in costume, some who are visitors and some who are staff. There are singing minstrels. There are flower girls selling roses. There are people toting around vats of pickles (Mike got one of these and the dragon puppet guy was like "MY WHAT A GIRTHY PICKLE THOU HAST THERE" bahaha) who would yell and shout at passersby all kinds of things obscene, but pickle related. Mike got a Sam Adam's Cherry Wheat Ale (Meade was $6 for a tiny glass and I decided we'll just buy meade at home) and then another later (which I stole.) The three of them ate sandwiches and I ate potatoe corn chowder in a bread bowl. We perused the shops and stopped by some of the shows. I bought a baby dragon puppet and later on 2 pirate hats (one for me and one for michael.) We saw a comedian/magician, a pyro tricks show, living chess, a troupe of singing pirates, and then stopped by the Tudor Rose theatre to see my old friend from high school perform. I ran into a former coworker and someone else from the theatre who worked in production. I mean, so much stuff happened it's just too much to type and describe! Already these two paragraphs are nutty and disjointed, haha! You'll just have to make the trip to New York and go see it yourself, that's pretty much all there is to it. I have so many photos it's ridiculous! They're up on my facebook but I'm sure I'll post some photos here when they're all fixed up! I have to take pictures of mike and i in our pirate hats, because i forgot to do that...

Right now though I'm going to lie down on the couch because I have a pounding headache and mom's got the tv up SO FREAKING LOUD THEY CAN PROBABLY HEAR IT ALL THE WAY IN CHINA HOLY CRAP.

Don't know where you are and what the weather is like there, but for once I'm surprised to say I'm writing this to you from a rather warm London. With the recent temperamental climate here it makes today feel like a heatwave.

Make the most of it my friends because it's a nigh on certainty that it 'aint gonna last! So when you come in from sunning yourself in the garden with your factor 400, or come back from that sneaky extra long lunch break you just had and your looking for something to cool you down a bit - may we recommend this photo - taken by one of Green i Design's resident photographers in April 08 no less.

A chilly little macro shot reminding us all that no matter where you are or how lovely it is today it's never guaranteed and this could be just round the corner!! Now run, get your shorts on and catch that ice cream van before its all too late!

It's amazing to me how much has transpired since Cameron turned one year old in January. I was physically exhausted after writing this letter to him. I'd found out the condition of my Gran had worsened and posted this - another drainer.

We made the decision to go to Scotland together as a family to see her in March, she passed while we were there and then I wrote this and this.

You'd never know I generally seep in sarcasm after reading those. Everybody takes you seriously when you have a lilting accent, though. Something about not hearing the different sarcastic inflection. Kiss my kilt. It's draining the sarcastic life out of me.

So, I decided since Cameron was turning 18 months old today, I was going to capture some shots of him and Ian together. It turned out well. As well as a mother could hope. Now I know why they say never to work with children or animals. Or animal children. (Click on any of the images to enlarge.)

I get them in position, and then they spot a farmer on his humongous tractor 16 miles away. OK, it was about half an acre behind our place, but still...

I birth a brain child and heave their bench from the porch onto the lawn. Too bad they're too busy TALKING to pay attention to me. Their mother.

Almost a shot. Too bad they're both looking the wrong way. What's over there, you say? Nothing. A rogue twig, probably.

Ian tries to steal a kiss, holding on to Cameron with the double hand death grip.

An escapee chases a bloody butterfly. However, I am still oozing the patience of a saint.

I manage to get Ian back on the bench, doing some sort of Playgirl move. Too bad his shoes are on backwards...

Yes, he's a freakin comedian. I'm laughing too. Can you hear me? CAN YOU HEAR ME??!!

I fake sneeze to get Cameron to laugh. It backfired when Ian started doing it too.

Granted, they're still sitting together, but then Ian starts body slamming him because I kept telling him to move back beside Cameron. Cameron then curses at him in his own language. Ian looks on, obviously indifferent to the insults being fired at him.

I give up. This one'll do.

I took this the night before. His first shot on a swing.

I get no respect. Check out his new growler face.

I get Ian in a prime spot and have him wait for Cameron. He was a no-show.

I'll leave it to the professionals next time, they get paid to be miserable. In the meantime, I have some SERIOUS blackmail fodder for when they're both teenagers. This is me with baited breath.

In that way you know what it’s going to be like when you arrive.

4. Call all of your vendor's the day before or two days before and confirm your wedding date.
Tips on how to handle a missing vendor on the day of the wedding:

If you can't get in touch with a vendor the day of the wedding, have your appointed party try to track them down. Hopefully, you will have all of their contact information with you at the wedding and reception site. Should your appointed person be unsuccessful in finding them, she should then start hunting down alternatives. Most wedding vendors will be happy to suggest last minute fixes for such a problem, and in such emergencies you may be surprised how well people can come together and solve last minute wedding glitches.

If you can't find a substitute, here are some other suggestions:

Missing Florist: Have your appointed person run to a grocery store or florist and buy as many flowers as you can afford. If flowers are not readily available, tell them to look for tall pillar candles.

The members of your wedding party will look simple and elegant carrying a candle each. Candles can also make simple centerpieces. Another alternative would be to build centerpieces out of fresh fruit and votive candles. Your guests will never know that the florist didn't come!

Missing Photographer: Call as many guests as you can and ask them to bring cameras. If you hadn't already planned to have cameras on the table, get a wedding party member to run to the grocery store and purchase some. After the wedding, set up a place where people can exchange photos (such as Flickr or Kodak. You may end up being surprised at how fun and creative your guests can be with just some point and shoot cameras.

Missing Minister or Officiant: In a pinch, download a copy of a wedding service from the Internet, and then ask a well-spoken good friend to lead the wedding. While you won't be legally married at the end of the day, you will still have had a memorable and spiritual wedding. Later, you can go to city hall and make things legal, or get married by a religious leader in a more intimate way.

Missing Printer/ Wedding Programs: In the end, no one will notice that you didn't have programs. If you have enough time, you can try to print out a new original, and run copies off on a Xerox machine, but it will be just as lovely without.

People often associate long exposures (or long shutter speeds) with night photography. What is overlooked are the amazing photos you can get with longer shutter speeds, ranging from 1/15 of a second up to many hours. What's more, these aren't tricky, and don't require sophisticated cameras and lenses. Because of the techniques associated with shooting at varying lengths of (longer) shutter speeds, I break them down into three categories: Shorter exposures, which go from about 1/20th of a second to several seconds, medium exposures, which go up to about a minute, and long exposures, which can be indefinitely long.

Technically, this isn't rocket science. The challenge is the composition. Because things are in motion, it's hard to frame your picture in real-time conditions that change so quickly, and deciding when to release the shutter. Expect to shoot many pictures of the same thing, hoping that one great shot will appear. One hint about composition is to pay attention to the direction of motion, since that will be the theme of the picture. Straight lines, curved motion, forward, backward. It's all about leading the viewer's eye from a starting point to an endpoint. It may be subtly implied, or very direct, but it's the motion itself that you want to convey.

When shooting from a stationery position, something else in the scene must also be stationary, or the effect is lost. Hence, it is necessary to keep the lens stable during the exposure to keep those stationary objects still. For 1/8 of a second or so, one "can", with enough practice, learn to be relatively still, but even then, it still requires repeated shooting. If you're on a train, for example, you can use a tripod.

I took a four-hour seminar put on by the Digital Photo Academy this weekend. It was a down and dirty review of photography basics - aperture, shutter speed, ISO - and composition techniques. I've read a lot about all of this before, but it was great to work through it with an instructor.

My best learning was that I can adjust my the settings for brightness, saturation, contrast, etc. right in my camera. I've always had to go back and do this manually after the fact (especially with the saturation levels), so this was an awesome discovery!

Hello there,
My name is Jackie Jackson and I started photographing weddings in Austin, Texas 10 yea

Hello there,

My name is Jackie Jackson and I started photographing weddings in Austin, Texas 10 years ago. I love weddings and here is why:

To me, weddings are an incredibly beautiful time in someone’s life. So much time and effort is put into having everything just right for that once-in-a-lifetime event. I feel very privileged to be welcomed as a part of such a joyous occasion.

Photographing weddings has enabled me to meet some of my closest friends: Many brides and grooms have gone from being prospects to clients to great friends. I consider myself lucky to have come into contact with some really awesome people.

Because I love people and I love my work, I tend to keep my clients: Several families I still do work for. I photography their children, family affairs such as parties, holidays and so on...

Documenting Peoples’ Lives:

It is really cool for me to have a career that enables me to document peoples’ lives from the beginning of their marriage to the birth of their first child to key events in their lives. Though the years, I help document their growth together by keeping their memories alive though photographs that will last a lifetime.

My Unique Style Of Photography:

The style of photography that I shoot can be described as traditional with a photojournalistic touch. I am constantly working to capture the unique personality of the people I photograph, like you. Every wedding has its true beauty and this needs to be captured in the photographs.

People Often Call Me “Invisible”:

In doing all of this I manage to stay invisible. I have people always telling me that they can’t believe how good I am at being invisible. Its important to me that I am not the main focus at the wedding. The main focus should be on the bride and groom, and this is my goal.

I am a very hard worker and at the same time very easy to talk to and deal with overall. I am also great good at helping ease nervous people so the portraits look great.

Although many photographers will try and take control of a wedding (to choreograph various shots), this can be stressing so I don’t typically do it. But, at the same time I have good control when the situation calls for it. My goal is to capture the essence of your wedding by letting your friends and family do what they do naturally.

As a wedding photographer I spend most of my time with the bride so it’s very important that we “click” together. You want to be able to get along well with the person that will be at your side on your very special, personal day.

Setting up a meeting to view more of my work and talk with me in person will hopefully help you in your decision. You can view some of my work at www.jjphotographyaustin.com.

I hope you enjoy looking at the photos on my website. If you’re interested in my availability, please feel free to e-mail me or call. I’ll get back with you as soon as possible with any questions you might have. I am very flexible with meeting times. I would love to meet with you to talk more about what you need and expect from your wedding photographer.

Wishing you all the best,

I believe in the one point five rule for two reasons. First, I believe it’s true. Second, the one

I believe in the one point five rule for two reasons. First, I believe it’s true. Second, the one rule just doesn’t sound as good. It suggests that if you are counting sleeping hours while in transit, whether in a car, train or plane, you take your original hours slept and divide it by 1.5 to get an accurate time of rest. My plane for Houston left the damp runway of Portland International Airport last Friday night at 11:55 pm. Hank and I were on our way to San Antonio to watch our Jayhawks play in the Final 4. With my two hours of sleep in the air and an additional two hours of sleep in Houston’s airport I was up to 4 (2.6) hours of sleep; which is enough considering my mind was quickly becoming occupied with the thought of what I was going to witness that evening. After a short 30 min flight to Austin we rented a car and drove the 1.5 hour drive to San Antonio and arrived at around noon on Saturday.. We met my Brother and His wife, Angie, at our Hotel before heading down to the River walk.

That afternoon and had a couple of beers at one of the multiple restaurants that cover either side of the river. Each of the Final 4 teams had their share of fans wondering around. We immediately determined defining characteristics of each of them.

UCLA: Tan or Asian, likely wearing team jersey with facial hair that is well trimmed,

UNC: Old

Memphis: Speaking in an unrecognizable English accent and eating some form of meat.

As I was reviewing my photos when I got home I noticed the Gentleman in the bottom right of this photo. He looked a lot like KU’s Athletic Director Lew Perkins. It would make since with the huge ring on his hand (Orange Bowl Ring). After sending it to my brother we both agree that it is him. I never knew he was there…

I love this photo because my brother is typically true to his “gut feeling” for the game. Angie and Hank = nervous, but Konan was expecting the victory, that or he was drunk.

This was a great backdrop for a couple of frames. The problem was the doors in the background went into hotel and convention center, so it was difficult to get a shot with no one else in the background. I put the original photos up too… before I took care of the problem. (sounds so mafia-ish)

We got to the arena about an hour and a half before the tip off of the first game. I didn’t take many photos inside of the Alamo Dome because they weren’t allowing lenses longer than 4 inches. For some reason they let me in, but I got several looks from staff when I had it out shooting, so I put the camera away most of the time. I was probably more nervous about the final 4 game against UNC than I was the national championship. I have wanted to play Roy Williams since he left KU over 4 years ago. Every year when the tournament brackets are released I look at our first match up and then I find North Carolina to determine what it will take to play them. You could tell who was picked to win the games. UCLA fans were lethargic before their game with Memphis and UNC fans didn’t even show up for the first 10 minutes of the UCLA – Memphis game. I enjoyed being the underdog; we just seem to play better. The first 15 min of the game against UNC was probably the best I have ever seen a Kansas basketball team play. I have seen individual performances that I will never forget, like Nick Collison vs. Texas on Big Monday, or Julian Wright vs. Texas at the 07’ Big XII Championship Game. But as a team; I have never seen a better performance. And what a better time than with Roy on the other end of the court. It was like seeing that ex-girlfriend for the first time in 4 years…. and then destroying her on a basketball court. I knew what the UNC fans were feeling. I have seen many Roy Williams high octane offence teams struggle against tough defense. One in particular was in 2000 when KU played Illinois in the Midwest Regional Semifinals. Roy had our team averaging 82 points a game. Bill Self’s Allini held us to 64 points to win the game. By-the-way, that game was played in San Antonio.

“It matters, art does. It’s one of the noblest things, because it can make us better, and one of the scariest things, because it comes from such a deep place inside of us. There’s nothing scarier than the moment when you sing the song for the very first time, for your roommate or you wife, or when you let someone see the painting, and there are a few very long silent moments when they haven’t yet said what they think of it, and in those few moments, time stops and you quit painting, you quit singing forever, in you head, because it's so fearful and vulnerable, and then someone says, essentially , thank you and keep going, and you breath releases, and you take back everything you said in your head about never painting again, about never singing again, and at least for a moment, you feel like you did what you came to do, in a cosmic, very big sense.

But don’t. Please don’t. Please keep believing that life can be better, brighter, broader, because of the art you make. Please keep demonstrating the courage that it takes to swim upstream in a world that prefers putting away for retirement to putting pen to paper, that chooses practicality over poetry , that values you more for going to the gym than going to the deepest places in your soul. Please keep making art for people like me, people who need the magic and imagination and honesty of great art to make the day-to-day world a little more bearable…..
