Denver cops honored for exemplary service

The Denver Police Department honored officers "who have gone above and beyond the call of duty" in a ceremony this afternoon.

The quarterly awards at the Denver Police Academy, 2155 N. Akron Way, began at 4 p.m. and were open to the public, the department said in a news release.

The recipients included:

Sgt. John Pinder and Detective Jesse Avendano, who received the medal of honor. The two were on duty in plain clothes eating lunch on Nov. 14 at the Ha Noi restaurant when a masked gunman entered and pointed a shotgun at several patrons. They shot the man.

Officer Jeffrey Heinis, who received the medal of valor. On April 11, Heinis chased and caught a masked man who had beaten up a clerk at an Ace Cash Express store.

Cpl. Dan Andrews, who received the distinguished service cross. On Feb. 3, Andrews subdued an intoxicated man who was trying to get his gun.

Officers Daniel Walton and Mickey Horton, who received the purple heart.On Sept. 2, Walton was injured when his cruiser was hit by a car as he was responding to a domestic-violence call.

On Nov. 16, Horton seriously injured his hand trying to subdue a suspect in a gang investigation.

Twelve officers received the life-saving award.Cpl. Darin Lindsey, Cpl. Doug Moran, Officer Robert Medina and Officer Greg Zimmerman saved a suicidal woman hanging from a third-story balcony on Feb. 28.

Officer Kyllion Chafin, Officer Gary Estrada, Detective Ken Klaus and Detective Jesse Avendano worked a case April 10 with a suicidal man who held a gun in his mouth until he calmed down.

Officers George Gann, Christopher Avitia, Tab Davis and Mickey Horton discovered a fire burning in a vacant church on Sept. 29 and evacuated a man who was sleeping inside.

Gothic pet Girl and liberation of women

A bus company has apologised to a girl who is led around on a leash by her boyfriend and describes herself as a human pet after one of its drivers threw her off a bus.

Tasha Maltby, 19, told British newspapers she was the "pet" of her 25-year-old fiance Dani Graves. I must say I like Goth they are really nice people always friendly and far from intimidating!

Pictures showed her dressed in black Gothic-style clothing with silver buckles on a silver chain -- which the driver of a bus from the firm Arriva took exception to and told them : "We don't let freaks and dogs like you on."

What caught my attention is the fact that many people remarked the fact that women have been fighting for the last 50 years for their emancipation and liberation..... I wonder what they really mean and if they are maybe referring at the 3rd page girls of the UK papers for example!

Miniskirts, see-through blouses and freedom from bras ironically turned women into sex symbols at the same time they demanded to be seen as more than that.
I wonder if there are other ways to be really "liberated" of male scrutiny and the standards of attractiveness. Where a woman is free to be who she is inside, and immune from being portrayed as sex symbol and lusted after. Where she "enjoys equal rights to those of man in everything, she stands on an equal footing with man " (Nadvi, 11) and both share mutual rights and obligations in all aspects of life..... All quite far from the 3rd page girls!

Sí, sí, sí, es 26, como que me tarde un poco; pero ya saben que para dar afecto y desearle bienestar y felicidad a alguien, no hay fecha ni horario.

Nikki Pinder, una de mis ilustradoras favoritas

Anteriormente ya eh hablado sobre ilustradores, hice un post sobre Stuntkid, el cual se llamo: Stuntkid, uno de mis ilustradores favoritos. El trabajo de Stuntkid se caracteriza por la cantidad de chicas que aparecen en el, sus ilustraciones y fotografías son muy versátiles, pero bueno, ese es Stuntkid.

De quien hablo en esta ocasión es de una ilustradora llamada Nicola Piner y que usa Nikki Piner como seudónimo. Originaria de Reino Unido y con 25 años, Nikki es la creadora de imágenes bastante admirables que mezclan lo rustico con lo surreal.

Su trabajo se inspira en el Bosque de Delamere, ubicado en el Noreste de Inglaterra. Su estilo se caracteriza por las texturas que utiliza, por el estilo rustico y surreal que mezcla en sus ilustraciones y por abstracto de ellas. Uno de los temas que mas le obsesionan es la relación del hombre con las maquinas.

Se graduó de la carrera de Ilustración y Diseño Grafico con Honores en la Trent University en el 2005, algo relativamente reciente si tomamos en cuenta que aun estamos en el 2007.

Y bueno, eso fue Nikki Pinder a grandes rasgos, ahora los dejo con una serie de ilustraciones que forman parte de su repertorio, disfruta!

i just needed to have one over her, i thought
i love lucy? well, not today!
today it's more like i lust (for) lucy.. although 4?
so, with my girlfriend's now magazine from a week ago or so i'm headed for the bathroom..
