As some of you are no doubt already aware, the original match has been invalidated due to Spud

As some of you are no doubt already aware, the original match has been invalidated due to Spud's inability to read cards. Normally he uses his hyper-sensitive fingertips to "read" the impressions of the ink on cards, but sleeves made it impossible for him to correctly determine the wording on Qwardian Council Hall. Not only did he believe he could use it while defending, he also thought it entitled him to play pantsless.

Needless to say, this is not appropriate behaviour for the Summer of Love, and thus both players shuffled up their decks for a rematch. This time, rather than dealing with other matters such as deciding which of the secondary prize gets assigned to which winning criteria, I actually oversaw the match and made notes.

Huzzah for notes! No pics though, it's late and I'm tired. You're all subject to my whims!

Pablo wins initiative and opts for Evens.

Round One:

Spud (Qwardian Real Estate) recruits nothing. Pablo (Stranger Danger) follows suit.

Qwardian RE: 50
Stranger Danger: 50

Round Two:

Pablo recruits Jack Knight. On the side he reveals to me that despite collating and a healthy shuffle, he has three in hand... Spud responds with Brainiac in the concealed area.

Jack kicks off the combat phase by digging another card out for Pablo; Brainiac blanches at the sight and passes.

Qwardian RE: 50
Stranger Danger: 50

Round Three:

Spud froths at the mouth and recruits Mad Dog. Pablo, no 3-drop in hand, activated Jack Knight for draw, recruits a new Jack, and again opts to draw a card.

Mad Dog barrels into Jack Knight, KO'ing Starman, and Brainiac swings into Pablo's face. Are we having fun yet?

Qwardian RE: 50
Stranger Danger: 43

Round Four:

Pablo takes wing with Katar Hol and his Nth Metal beatstick. Spud's hatred is never-ending, eternal if you will. Like, Ra's Al Ghul...

Being on the first eventful combat turn of the game!

Katar ploughs into Ra's. Spud flips Forbidden Loyalties and grabs a counter for the Eternal Nemesis. Naturally, Katar powers up. But look, up there in that Mountain Stronghold! It's Bane, and Ra's feels all reinforced. Orbitting in the Anti-Matter universe is the planet Qward, dropping Katar's defense by one, but the Phantom Stranger pumps Hawkman to dodge the dual stun. Ra's goes down, muttering invectives.

Not willing to lose board presence, Spud passes.

Qwardian RE: 46
Stranger Danger: 43

Round Five:

Bane wanders down from the Mountain Stronghold, to be met face-to-face by an enormous pink bubble... which promptly bursts and vanishes as Tabitha Smith chews away. Tabby and Katar decide to call the Phantom Stranger back before entering the combat phase.

Wannna see a busy combat?

Ra's declares into Tabby.

2x Harsh Judgement reduce Tabby, and Ra's plays a Savage Beatdown.

Pablo flips Forbidden Loyalties, getting a counter for Tabby

Phantom Stranger pumps Tabby for +1/+2 thanks to Katar

Justice United? There's that Phantom Stranger again

Hey, another Justice United! That Phantom Stranger gets around

2 exhausts for Qward and a discard for Brainiac and Spud's 1 pt over

And Pablo shuts the door with Against All Odds.

In the face of all of that to only receive a stunback, Spud passes.

Qwardian RE: 42
Stranger Danger: 43

Round Six:

Time for a little Power... Power Girl, at least, and it looks like she's raided Hawkman's closet and found an Nth Metal shoehorn. The mysteriously ground-bound Shrike appears to oppose her.

With another string of effects (whatever happened to simple beats??) Power Girl swings into Shrike. Shrike exhausts for Qward, Phantom Strangerpumps Power Girl, Shrike pumps, Brianiac exhausts for Qward. Finally, a dual stun, with Bane reinforcing Shrike.

Tabitha, having stolen Ra's counter (it's hers!), kicks into Bane for... yes, yes, it's a simple combat! Yay! Katar follows suit into Ra's, who exhausts for Qward for a dial stun.

Finally, Mad Dog barrles into Pablo's face. He gets lost in Pablo's manly beard at first, but makes it out in the end.

Qwardian RE: 25
Stranger Danger: 24

Round Seven:

Missing his seven, Spud recruits Ultraman and Merlyn. Also missing a seven, Pablo recruits Monica Rambeau. Both Tabby and Monica exhaust to bring back that recurring Phantom Stranger.

Shrike shrieks into Power Girl, but it looks like the effects are back. Power Girl gets an Advance Warning, Spud complains about not being able to use Tower Of Babel while attacking; three exhausts for Qward and the stun goes through.

Both players are eager to get to turn 8 for the endgame...

Qwardian RE: 22
Stranger Danger: 18

Round Eight:

Pablo finally actually recruits the Phantom Stranger, but Spud has missed his 8-drop and only has Dead-Eye. Pablo exerts testosterone-laden omnipotence on Qward, to which Spud responds with four exhausts to reduce the Phantom Stranger's defense.

Keeping it simple:

Stranger into Shrike, Merlyn reinforces.

Power Girl into Merlyn with a single power-up

Monica slaps Spud in the face... with a Savage Beatdown.

Qwardian RE: -14
Stranger Danger: 11

With that the rematch is done, and Stranger Danger moves on to be one step closer to the Prom.

Reign in Hell #1

Superman / Batman #50

Teen Titans #61

Trinity #9

The Justice Society Annual was interesting for a few reasons. On the surface it's a pretty straightforward "you can't go home again" story for Power Girl, as she finds herself back on the alternate earth (Earth-2) that was her home and that was presumed destroyed in the first Crisis. And while it is that kind of story in many ways, it tackles that theme from so many angles that it makes for a deep, wonderful read.

Geoff Johns could have easily played Earth-2 as the happier, shinier earth where everyone was happy and untouched by the tragedies that have befallen their New Earth counterparts... and instead he opted to give us an Earth-2 that is a logical extension of the classic version, updated for today, with all the added complexity and drama that that entails. Thus we get a Helena Wayne that is perhaps in a worse place emotionally than Helena Bertinelli of New Earth, who's no picture of mental health herself. This Helena Wayne is haunted by an aging, still-murderous Joker, and torn between her feelings for her long-time boyfriend and her feelings for Dick Grayson, who is, after all, practically her brother. It's an interesting extrapolation of the classic Huntress character, but Johns isn't done yet.

Despite what the cover might lead you to believe, Earth-2 is not patrolled by classic members of the Justice Society, but rather by their children and heirs. Al Pratt (for some reason) is the sole original JSAer to remain an active member of the team. Johns therefore gives us the "classic" JSA earth, only for us to find that the classic JSA lineup is less represented here than it is on New Earth! Johns seems to be wagging his fingers at the readers who have spend the last twenty-two years waiting impatiently for the return of the "real" JSA. Despite what comic book readers like to believe, time can't stand still, after all.

And then there's Power Girl itself. Her story could have gone down two very formulaic paths. 1) Kara returns to the earth she loved, it's everything she remembered, BUT WAIT, now she's being pulled back to New Earth and she's all sad and mopey! Or 2), nothing's like I remember it, so I'd like to go back to New Earth now, please! But Johns takes the story down neither road. Earth-2 isn't perfect, but it isn't horrible, either. It's just different. Time has passed, her friends have aged and matured, and the world has gotten a little darker, but these aren't BAD things. It's just what happens. It happens to everyone, everywhere. And so of course Kara is happy to see her old friends, but it's like she says to Helena: "I don't feel like we're friends anymore. I don't feel like I belong here." Like Helena and the others, Kara has grown up. She doesn't need to go home and be with her old friends any more because she has new friends. She's not the junior member of the JSA "Super Squad" any more, she's the chairwoman of the Justice Society of America! It's no surprise, then, that Kara realizes fairly quickly -- much faster than we, the readers, are likely to -- that there's no choice to be made here. She has to go home, back to her real home, on New Earth.

It's to Johns' credit that this Annual is both a loving tribute to the old Earth-2 stories, and a cautionary tale about living in the past. After all, surely this earth isn't inherently better because Al Pratt is still the Atom, or because Ted Knight is still Starman, or because Jay Garrick is still the only Flash? No, this earth just seems a little less special without Ray Palmer and Ryan Choi, without Jack Knight and Thom Kallor, and without Barry Allen and Wally West running around.

Earth-2 is a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.

This DC Comics promotional piece has been getting a lot of buzz on the internet and if you're a hardcore comics fan you've probably already seen it, but I just had to post it on my own little strand of the web.

I love how Hughes has really invested the drawings of each character with touches of their signature styles and character traits. I only wish that Marc Andreyko's Manhunter was more of an A list character to be included. For more of Adam Hughes amazing artwork, visit his site here.

From left to right we have Catwoman, Oracle (in front of her), Zatanna, Black Canary, Power Girl, Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Vixen, Batwoman (seated), Poison Ivy & Harley Quinn. My only quibble is that my girl Helena Bertinelli, the Huntress, is missing from the line-up.

No, I wasn't there. I was never in New York, actually, or out of my country (unfortunately; I do hope that once I'll get out of here it would be a one-way ticket). I wanted to mention some of my favorite news coming out of the New York Comic Con which happened (if you don't know) last weekend.

* Mark Waid writing Amazing Spider-Man: To tell the truth, I haven't been following ASM for months and I don't really know what's going on with Brand New Day. But I intend to check the book eventually and the addition of Mark Waid to the writing team sounds perfect. Too bad the once-planned Spidey book he was supposed to do with the late Mike Wieringo never came to fruition. Still, he's perfect for Spider-Man.

* Matt Fraction on Secret Invasion: Thor: I was very excited when Marvel announced couple of weeks ago that Fraction will write 3 one-shots starring Thor (the first one drawn by the talented Patrick Zircher and coming out next week). Now they say he'll write the Secret Invasion spin-off starring the God of Thunder. Could it mean that Marvel is preparing Fraction to replace JMS in the future? Don't know, but these Thor projects are more than enough for now.

* New Secret Six ongoing series: One of my favorite books in recent years (as the Villains United mini-series and its one-shot, both related to Infinite Crisis; and later the Secret Six mini-series) is finally getting the ongoing treatment by the current team's creator Gail Simone who will be joined by artist Nicola Scott. The team members will be Catman, Deadshot, Scandal and Ragdoll (all were in the previous books by Simone) with two new members, an A-list Bat-villain and a new female character. This is my favorite announcement from NYCC, no doubt.

* All Star Superman continues: One of the best books out there will continue without Frank Quitely's art. Too bad, but as long as Grant Morrison is still writing it, I'm glad.

* New Power Girl book: Okay, I'm not a big fan of the character, but I just wrote about her in a recent list. It does sound promising: Amanda Conner on art, Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray on script. That will sure look good and be funny, so I'm willing to try. Funny books are always welcomed.

* Vertigo's Madame Xanadu: Sounds like the next big project from the imprint. Matt Wagner is writing, so that's a sure bet. Don't know artist Amy Hadley, but for now I'm going for it because of the writing.

* The Gordon Lee case dropped: Neil Gaiman announced that the charges against the Georgia-based retailer were finally dropped. Lee was arrested years ago because allegedly one of his employees gave a kid a comic book with explicit art. After a long battle and the CBLDF aiding Lee, spending over 100,000$, a judge eventually decided to cancel the trial. Good news for the comics industry and Lee personally.

It's hard. It's really hard to come up with ideas for these lists, and this is only my second entry under this feature. But I committed myself and I won't bail out so soon. Despite my struggles, I came up with a theme: Blonde female comic book characters. Many believe that blonde women are men's favorites. I don't know about that, since I love them in all kinds of colors, but to each his own. This time the list is sort of a Top xx with the blondes that I think are the most influential.

Top 9 Blonde Female Comic Book Characters
9. Emma Frost (formerly known as the White Queen; X-Men)

A former villain who became part of the team she once fought against; had an affair with a married man, with whom she shares her life ever since his wife died; along with their relationship came a dowry - co-leading the same team she was once enemy of; and she still manages to be an ice queen, a true blonde bitch. Sometimes it makes you wonder if she really changed her heart and became an X-Woman or is it all a facade. Either way, she's still a great character thanks to the treatment of Grant Morrison.

8. Carol Denvers (Ms. Marvel; Ms. Marvel, Mighty Avengers)

A former US Air Force pilot, Carol Denvers has been through many episodes in her life. Her most recent was during House of M: In that reality she lived her fantasy of being the world's greatest super-heroine. When the world returned to "normality" Carol realized that she really wants to live this dream and is ready to do whatever it takes. The Superhuman Registration Act and Civil War had put her alongside Tony Stark as one of the SHRA's and later the Initiative's most impacting figures and the leader of the official Avengers (Mighty Avengers). Currently she deals with the Skrull invasion and the return of her old deceased flame Captain Marvel. Many people may hate her for going with the "wrong" people (she is siding with the law, which in this case seems bad), but eventually Carol keeps on following orders and uses her own common sense. It doesn't make her stupid or evil. She just wants to prove herself as a super-heroine and a leader, and unfortunately people, sometimes friends may get hurt in the way (though Carol tries her best to avoid it, even in the cost of her position).

6. Karen Starr/Kara Zor L (Power Girl; Justice Society of America)

The woman and the famous cleavage. Superman's cousin (like Supergirl) from Earth-2, with an unclear origin that she found out about only a few years ago during Infinite Crisis. Her reunion with cousin Kal-L and his wife Lois was too short when they both died during that event. Currently she serves as the chairman of her team JSoA and moved long past the status of another Superman Family character. For years she was thought to be a second-rate Supergirl (technically she is Supergirl), but her strong and fun characteristics - along with the cleavage, of course - gained her the love of readers and she's one of the strongest DC characters as of now.

6. Tulip O'Hare (Preacher)

It's so easy to take a supporting female character, particularly a love interest of the protagonist and make her a weapon in the hands of the bad guys or a weak girl. Not in Tulip's case. Despite the fact that her ex-boyfriend is a former preacher that a creature from heaven resides in his body, their companion is a century old Irish vampire and almost everyone including God wants them dead - Tulip still shines and knows how to deal with the evils of the world. As the image above shows, she knows how to use a gun, thanks to her father and working as a hired gun for the last couple of years. In her relationship with Jesse they're equal. As he once learned, you can't mess with her and treat Tulip as the poor girl and expect to get away with it; even if you're the love of her life. She's definitely not your typical blonde.

5. Betty Cooper (Archie, Betty & Veronica)

The long-time love interest of Archie Andrews and best friend of Veronica Lodge, her competitor over Archie's heart, Betty been a teenager ever since she first appeared over 65 years ago. Easily she's been an inspiration to young girls with her wisdom and resourcefulness, as opposed to her brunette friend. If Archie is ever going to choose between the two of the girls, hopefully it'll be Betty.

4. Kara Zor-El (Supergirl; Supergirl, Teen Titans)

Just like her Earth-2 counterpart, Supergirl has one of the most confused origins in the history of comics (and entertainment). She has been Superman's cousin, an artificial creature, a possible angel and eventually back to being a Kryptonian (for now). Currently she's a vigorous teenager as opposed to Superman's "too straight" policy, sometimes clashes with her cousin. Recently she's been part of the 31st century Legion of Super-Heroes and later joined the Teen Titans. Despite her origin, the criticism of her current anorexic look, the skimpy costume and her 1985 dubious movie, Supergirl is still a prominent blonde female and more importantly a teenage female character.

3. Gwen Stacy (Amazing Spider-Man)

Spider-Man's greatest love who in her tragic death helped to build Peter Parker's character for the decades to come, Gwen was the ultimate love interest: a smart, beautiful and loving girl. Her romance with Peter was one of the most beautiful relationships ever. That relationship matured Peter and later helped him to succeed with his relationship and marriage with Mary Jane Watson. Despite the stains to his romantic life caused by recent years' stories, I choose to remember them as they were. I wish that more stories like Spider-Man: Blue (a memorial tale to Gwen) were done and less debacles like Sins Past. Anyway, Gwen Stacy's impact will be strong as long as we the readers keep on remembering her.

2. Dinah Lance (Black Canary; Justice League of America, Green Arrow/Black Canary)

The best blonde female to grace the pages of DC's comic books, a beautiful crime fighter and Oliver Queen's on-and-off lover (now they're married). Dinah is mostly known as a team player: JSA in the 40's, JLA since the early 60's and Birds of Prey for most of the series' run. She's not as famous as Wonder Woman, but still a great character and gives a good reputation to blondes. Her fishnets and leather costume are "just" a bonus. Also, two of my favorite Justice League Unlimited episodes were 'Double Date' and 'Grudge Match' where she had main roles (and she was voiced by the lovely Morena Baccarin).

1. Sue Storm-Richards (Invisible Woman; Fantastic Four)

The first lady of the Marvel Universe, married to one of the smartest scientists on Earth (though he's mostly emotionally distanced) and serves as the "mother" of the first family (and mother of two), sometimes people forget that Sue is the strongest member of the FF and probably on Earth. Being the only woman in a team of four can be hard, but Sue proved herself enough in the passing 47 years (hard to believe she's that old, right?) and gained the respect of Marvel's other heroes. Many people think that she's the greatest female character in the Marvel Universe, and they're right. Reed maybe the official leader of the FF, but Sue is what keeps the team together and even took leadership when her husband was supposedly dead. In her case, blonde is really just a hair color.

----------------------

That's all. I'd really like to hear comments about the list and ideas for future lists (seriously, I don't know what to do next).

Si usted fue uno de los votantes o fue de aquellos que no se enteraron de votación alguna, su blog amigo publicó una encuesta de la película más esperada del año. Los resultados fueron sorprendentes. Bueno, no tanto.

Hmmm...this was an interesting set up for the mystery of the new Vigilante. It isn't someone who knows Dick and Nightwing are one and the same but it seems like it is someone who has dealt with Nightwing in the past. I am glad to see Dick isn't sporting the rudiculous hair dough he had when Bruce Jones was on the title. Anyways, I liked this issue but I am wondering if I am really going to care when the Vigilante's identity is going to be revealed.

Nightwing #135
Art by Jon Bosco

Now this was a good issue. I liked show it showed Dick's glass half full view of the world and how that makes him different then Batman and the Vigilante. I liked it especially because I see things the same way as Dick (But I haven't experience evil in the way Dick has so Dick is definitely a stronger person then I am). The art was good too, especially for fill-in.

Nightwing #136

Um kinda confused by this. Do Eddie and Liu work for the HIVE? What is the new Vigilante's connection to Adrian Chase? And why do they want Dick Grayson's DNA, do they think he's a metahuman? Hopefully we will get answers next issue.Nightwing #137
Art by Jon Bosco

Damn...a cliffhanger. Wolfman is leaving this book and writing a Vigilante Series...I will pick it up but geez that's a big cliffhanger just to leave people hanging. Anyways, I loved the 321 days and the missing years between the end of the Teen Titans and the beginning of the New Teen Titans....I totally get the timeline now. But anyways, Wolfman's run was decent, better then Jone's run. I look forward to see what Tomasi does with this book. Oh and the last page of this issue was awesome!

Nightwing #138
Written by Fabian Nicieza Art by Don Kramer

DC's go to fill-in guy Nicieza tackles this issue of Nightwing, part 2 of the batbook crossover "Ressurection of Ra's Al Ghul". It was okay....this crossover is just okay. Nothing too exciting to write home about. I like Ra's Al Ghul but he isn't my favorite Bat-villain (Not even close) so nothing here really excites me. It it is totally in character for Nightwing to try to save the villain's lives though I liked that. Oh and Nightwing using a teleporter is too easy and lame for a Bat-book.

This is part 6 of the Ressurection of Ra's Al Ghul crossover, and I did like this a lot. Although it was more a Robin story then a Nightwing story it was good to see Nightwing's thoughts on what Robin has been through. You can't blame Robin for wanting to bring his friends and family back but I think he made the right choice in the end.

Peter Tomasi's first issue of his Nightwing run was a real treat. I have never read any of the former editor's stuff (I think?) and he is really good. This blows Bruce Jones and Marv Wolfman out of the park. Of course, Morales's amazing art helps as well. I love the characterization of the bat family and the idea of Nightwing building his base in a museum he is now the curator of. This was just awesome! The only problem I had is he always refers to himself as Richard, not Dick, in this issue. Huh?

Tomasi is quickly turning this into one of DC's best monthly books and that is an amazing turn around from what it was before. Tomasi takes the time this issue to show what is going on with Nightwing's relationships with different people in the DCU including the Flash and Batman. Tomasi knows how to use the DCU effectively and doesn't forget that the JSA operate out of New York as well. Awesome! All writers should follow Tomasi when it comes to utilizing the shared universe concept.

With three great issues, Tomasi has proven himself as a great writer for Nightwing. This issue was full of awesomeness with the art and the story perfectly awesome. Robin and Nightwing's brotherly relationship was great to see and it is always nice to see Ma Hunkel! Tomasi better be on this book for a long time to come. I don't know that I care for the use of Talia so soon but o well, that's only one problem in a book of awesomeness.

So how do superheroines fight in boobs? It sure must be hard work, as the average woman has a hard time finding the right bra. Imagine what it must be like fighting crime with boobs. Hard work, huh? So I don't understand why Power Girl has the biggest boobs on the planet. I swear, they must be a G-cup or something:

It's a monoboob!

But just imagine a bra that is perfect for any woman. I nominate the Amazons! If they can invent an Invisible Plane and forge indestructable bracelets, then surely they have the best bra technology the planet Earth can have. Which brings me to Wonder Woman, who has lived in a society only with women.

I'm pretty sure that gold lining is her support bra, but what if they had invisible bras? I mean, if they can invent an Invisible Plane, so why not an invisible bra? Plus with all the added bells and whistles of the bracelets. I mean, any pervert wouldn't want their "Wondertwins" being damaged now? They are after all her pride!

But just imagine the ultimate bra technology. Polaris would be so rich from this idea. Remember in X-Men 3: The Last Stand when Magneto reconstructed the bridge while he was making his way over it? Imagine that, but just with a bra! It would be the perfect fit, with no bounceage and also allowing said superheroine to breathe perfectly. The metal can be protected from most attacks and hey, said heroine could even use them as weapons.

Yep, Polaris the ultimate wonder bra maker.

*Sigh*

We're too late this week to participate in Friday Night Fights, but that doesn't mean the Keeper can't sit back and enjoy the spectacle of senseless, super-hero violence in comfort of his own Fortress.

Especially when it involves the butt-kickin' take-no-prisoners Supergirl of Earth-2: Kara Zor-L, Power Girl!

By the way, let's state unequivocally that Kara's strategy for defeating mummies is 100 percent sound. Really, you don't have to master Sun Tzu's The Art of War to clobber a horde of shambling bandages.

Unless, that is, said mummies are able to run a mile under 10 seconds like those @#$% zombies in Resident Evil.

The Keeper hates those guys ...
