Flu ramblings are fun

I have the flu. It's winter here and I am really quite ill. Shaking, fever, sinus issues... Ugh. Not good. It's 2am and I can't sleep. So here's some stuff.

So apparently they're making two movies about Sherlock Holmes. One is a comedy starring Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell (blerg), and the other is a serious one starring Robert Downey Jr. (fuck yeah!) and directed by Guy Ritchie (semi-fuck yeah!). Would RDJ be right for the role?

It's been a few months since I last read any Sherlock Holmes, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Holmes, in the books, is in fact quite charismatic. While Holmes was based on an older teacher of Arthur Conan Doyle's, the actual character is actually around RDJ's age, and was fairly charismatic. I think. He was supposed to be one of those prodigal genius' that everyone was amazed by.

Approximately 7 years ago I said I would review Rogue. So here it is.

Rogue is the second feature film by Aussie director Greg Somethingorother. McLean! That's it. Thank you, IMDb.

His first was Wolf Creek, which was fucking scary and really well made. A lot of people diss it for being brutal and cold, but in my opinion it succeeded at what it wanted to; be a good horror film. It was tense, suspenseful, otherwordsthathavethatsamemeaning, and it really hit home. I've traveled through the Central Australian desert, and it's scarily remote. The 4 leads (3 young adults driving north on a kind of backpacking holiday thing and the... the antagonist) all do a great job, and the plot and dialogue are both excellent. Highly recommended for those who appreciate good horror. I give it 4/5 in general, but it's a 5/5 horror flick.

Anyway, Rogue follows a group of tourists on a boat cruise up a river in the Northern Territory, in outback Australia. The cast includes Michael Vartan , who plays an American travel writer, Radha Mitchell as the boat captain and tour guide, and several others who, in any other horror film, would just be making up the numbers. Here, those others include Aussie comedic actor Stephen Curry and Wolf Creek star and Australian icon John Jarratt, and they're not just making up the numbers. Most of the cast give strong performances. Most. Basically, the boat gets stranded upriver far from help, and the tourists and their tour guide find themselves trapped in the domain of a great big hungry Saltwater Crocodile. The film delivers most of the genre conventions, but does so in an entertaining and fresh way. The tension is high, and the Croc looks pretty bloody scary. This is a nice little creature feature, and it's definitely worth a look.

I also saw The Prestige, so I thought I'd give my opinion on that too. It's good. Hugh Jackman's accent slips a few times, and Christian Bale is unremarkable (as usual), but other than that it's a really nice, interesting film. I'm a big Chris Nolan fan, and he really delivered a great piece of cinema here. Many people look for hidden secrets and further depth in this film, and rightly so; the film itself really creates a strange experience for the viewer. It leaves you thinking, "Wait... did I miss anything? Is there more to this than meets the eye?" And that is a question I still can't answer.

Speaking of Hugh Jackman, there's significant buzz about his upcoming X-Men spinoff, Wolverine. He was arguably the best thing about the X-Men movies, and I like the Jack Man, so I'm hesitantly looking forward to this.

I'm starting to feel pretty unwell so I might end this entry here and see if I can get to sleep. Cheerio!

One of the perks when I worked for InStyle Magazine early in my career was seeing not only all the beautiful clothes hanging in the fashion closet, but learning about all the up and coming beauty products that passed the beauty editors desk each day. One day while walking by the beauty closet I noticed a red box with a brush inside. I asked the beauty editor about the brush. She told me it was from Paris. Then she told me to take it and use it and tell her what I thought of it.

Well, after eight years with that French brush I can still say it's awesome! Easy on the scalp and doesn't pull your hair. It even brushes wet knotted hair with ease.

Pagi ini saya sempatkan membuat satu artikel untuk blog ini, ada suatu kisah menarik yang saya alami kemarin. Ceritanya saat saya mengadakan meeting rutin dengan all crew. Kita lakukan setiap Kamis jam 3 sore. Dalam setiap meeting selalu saya sampaikan satu materi self renewal, policy perusahaan, brainstorming, dan planning program. Saat meeting akan saya tutup, seperti biasa saya berikan kesempatan peserta meeting untuk menanyakan sesuatu yang mungkin belum jelas. Ada diantara kru yang memberikan masukan

tentang pentingnya OBVan (Outside Broadcasting Van). Memang di kota ini hampir sebagian radio memiliki fasilitas tersebut. Kru saya menanyakan kenapa kita tidak memiliki fasilitas tersebut padahal itu sangat penting buat image ? Memang kru saya tidak salah ataupun keliru mengatakan OBVan sangat mendukung image. Dia memberikan sebuah contoh kasus, saat itu ada pejabat setempat yang sedang melakukan sambutan dan dalam moment tersebut mengatakan terimakasih kepada OBVan yang saat itu datang. Menurut kru saya, itu hal yang bagus, itu sebuah pengakuan. Memang apa yang dikatakan kru saya ada benarnya, image terangkat oleh OBVan. Namun dengan halus saya katakan bahwa sebenarnya untuk mendapat image yang bagus tidaklah harus memiliki OBVan. Karena di ibukota sendiri OBVan sangat jarang ditemukan, namun persaingan dan keuntungan secara materi dunia radio sangatlah besar. Menurut saya OBVan hanyalah trend yang pada akhirnya akan menjadi hal yang biasa. Kecuali sarana tersebut dialih fungsikan untuk disewakan kepada event organizer untuk suatu event. Meskipun tetep bisa melaporkan acara secara live, kalau sudah begitu radio akan sedikit mengalami pergeseran fungsi menjadi persewaan equipment.

Jika menurut klien OB Van adalah hal penting, bisa saja kita turuti kemauannya. Kita bisa meyewa OB Van dalam jangka waktu tertentu sesuai keinginan klien. Yang jadi masalah, apakah setelah kita sediakan OB Van, klien bersedia menyetujui proposal promosi yang kita ajukan? Jawabannya belum tentu, bisa saja disetujui jika ada budget. Apakah si klien mau menambah dana promosinya jika kita menyediakan OB Van? Sekali lagi, belum tentu. Dimana klien akan beriklan? Jawabnya tentu saja di radio bukan di OB Van.

Melihat "salah kaprah" diatas, rasanya perlu kita diam sejenak untuk berpikir dengan sehat, fungsi utama OB Van adalah sebagai alat siaran luar ruang, bukan untuk menaikkan prestige. Bagi radio swasta komersial, gunakanlah OB Van untuk mendatangkan pemasukan dari iklan, jangan sampai OB Van justu menjadi pos pengeluaran. Jika akan menggunakan OB Van untuk siaran luar ruang, pastikan ada klien yang mau mensponsori acara itu. Dengan begitu OB Van sudah digunakan sebagaimana mestinya.

The Prestigious Fallacy

Overview
B's quote is a stunning, and all-too-common example of a logical fallacy: a flaw or error in reasoning. The main result of logical fallacies is actually not to resolve the question presented. Rather, it is to shift the scope of the argument to topics that are already accepted as true by the one using the fallacy.

Here, the speaker intends to rebut the conclusions made by A. The proper way of doing so is called refutation, and is properly done by B calling into question the validity or persuasiveness of D, E, F, by presenting (1) new evidence that contradicts D, E, F; (2) new evidence that weakens D, E, F; (3) showing that D, E, F are actually G, H, I; (4) showing that D, E, F actually should lead to conclusions J, K, L instead of X, Y, Z; and so on. In eviscerating D, E, F, B can undermine the conclusions X, Y, Z that follow.

However, instead of engaging in refutation, here B has simply shifted the scope to something else--B has dispensed with X, Y, Z and D, E, F entirely. When B talks about "Michel Foucault," "turning over in his grave," and "Thumbs down," B is not talking about or addressing anything A has asserted. The benefit of this is that the cognitive dissonance of B is quelled--but not because he was right in his argument, but rather because he didn't have to address what the argument was actually about (X, Y, Z and D, E, F). Here's an example of what's essentially going on:

A: I think religion is a sham because there is no evidence of any kind that God exists, and religious people still suffer without reason.
B: Religion is not a sham because St. Augustine is upset. Boo to you.

Thought-terminating clichés
A thought-terminating cliché, as defined by Robert Jay Lifton, is "the most far-reaching and complex of human problems are compressed into brief, highly reductive, definitive-sounding phrases, easily memorized and easily expressed." (Thought Reform and the Psychology of Totalism, page 429). They can be any kind of logical fallacy, but the most frequent appear to be appeals to authority (discussed later) and "ignorance of refutation." Almost every logical fallacy can be described as a form of Ignorance of Refutation: here, Michel Foucault may indeed be turning over in his grave, and mammalian digits may be pointed earthward, but neither event has anything to do with whether X, Y, Z or D, E, F are true or false.

But B makes a more "complex" kind of illogical argument here. B makes what I like to call a Prestigious Fallacy.

The Prestigious Fallacy
Known as one kind of the Appeal to Authority in Greek times, I think the Prestigious Fallacy is a better name, for it elucidates the emotional motivations of the arguer. A little differently, too: the appeal to authority is used to bolster an assertion actually made, whereas a prestigious fallacy doesn't necessarily--no assertion may be made at all.

The kinds of prestigious fallacies that are made often cite famous/important people (politicians, academics, authors, poets, artists, musicians, philosophers) or institutions (particularly Harvard/Yale/Princeton/Stanford and Oxbridge).

Why prestigious fallacies are used: societal deference. You defer to the famous person’s eminence, not any actual arguments they make on the topic. This can be particularly dangerous, as here, where B cited a prestigious person who would have expertise on the topic, as the listener is supposed to assume many things simply from the prestigious reference:
(1) The prestigious person referenced actually has the answer, and citing the name itself assumes the answer (i.e., the answer is embedded in the actual name, even though the answer is never articulated);
(2) Since such a prestigious person came to whatever the heck the answer is, the answer must be right--assumes that prestigious people are prestigious because they come up with right answers, and that whatever right answers they may have come up with are some of the right answers here;
(3) Since the prestigious person, in the words of the arguer, disagrees and/or disapproves of the listener’s assertion, the listener is wrong; and
(4) The listener is supposed to know, simply because of the reference, the “correct” answer prestigious person or institution would say. This is a classic example of shifting the issue. Instead of addressing whether X, Y, Z or D, E, F is true, B has tried to shift the issue to whether or not Michel Foucault would agree with A. A is supposed to know only what B knows of what the prestigious person would say, without B actually articulating for A what they would say or have said. A perfect analog is Family Guy, e.g., Snoopy appears on an episode and we're supposed to know his appearance alone is funny without any context--just because Snoopy is present, and therefore referred to, it's supposed to be funny. The prestigious fallacy is the same way. Just because Michel Foucault is mentioned, I'm supposed to be persuaded, even though I have not been provided with what Foucault might actually say.

The Logical Error
The prestigious fallacy is reducible to the "Because I said so" argument your mother or father gave you when you were a small child, recast as "Because Michel Foucault said so." This in no way addresses the question presented. In fact, it gives credibility to the conservative argument that liberals aren't really that smart (since liberals seem to make these silly appeals to authority often). Ann Coulter, improbably, might be right in this instance--God for liberals may have been replaced by Harvard.

What the person is actually saying is "I don't even need to provide an answer: citation to Harvard makes me right." The problem with this, of course, is that the person/institution can be used interchangeably with any argument or question presented that remotely relates to their field. So the true nature of the prestigious fallacy is revealed--it has the same logical force as a thought-terminating cliché. Saying "A professor at Oxford says so" is equivalent to saying "don't put all your eggs in one basket" in the sense that both mean nothing. Even putting aside the ridiculous and illogical suggestion that a name alone can be an answer to any question, guess what, Harvard can be wrong! Michel Foucault can be wrong--and wrong about philosophy. Fukuyama was wrong about neoconservatism, Boltzmann was wrong about his own theory, and so were many other prestigious people.

How to fix it: Don't concentrate on people. Concentrate on ideas--in this instance, specific refutation of X, Y, Z and D, E, F.

Maybe I should talk a little bit about prestige, too. Prestige, using Paul Graham's wonderful definition, is simply "fossilized inspiration." Harvard is prestigious because it is (arguably--see W&M) the first college in America, and the first corporation, among other things. Prestige has no connection to logic. It only has the luxury of being the first in time to do a particular extraordinary thing. That event does not equal persuasiveness in all things, or even the things addressed by the prestigious person or institution. Somewhere along the line--and perhaps it started with English papers in grade school--people conflated prestige with logical persuasion.

The crazy thing about the Michel Foucault "argument" is that it combined a prestigious fallacy with two thought-terminating clichés: "[Prestigious fallacy:] Michel Foucault is [thought-terminating cliché] probably rolling over in his grave. [Thought-terminating cliché:] Thumbs down." That's like an anti-argument.

Since I've got quite a large reading fan base, I like to spread the love to each and every one of you and attempt to give back to you guys, and the main way I do that is by pointing you in the right direction of where to find great things.

Today I read a blog, written by Steven Beynon, about reviewing video games, that I liked so much that I thought I'd show it to you guys.

The blog by Steve inspired me to go back to my old way of reviewing, so unless I'm extremely lazy or have no real way to describe a game through meaningful paragraphs, I probably won't be using the Kotaku-style of reviewing too much in the future.
