Grieving widower Garret Blake builds boats for a living. Rebuilding his life-that's another matter. But that's before Theresa Osborne comes to his North Carolina village. Theresa a lonely divorcee and researcher for the Chicago Tribune knows that Garret is the author of the message she found inside a bottle on a Cape Code beach. And she knows the message spoke to her in away that profoundly touched her heart. Kevin Costner as Garret and Robin Wright Penn as Theresa bring high-voltage starpower to Message in a Bottle a tale of love lost and found based on Nicholas Sparks' bestseller and directed by Luis Mandoki (White Palace When a Man Loves a Woman). "You choose-the paste or the future. Pick one and stick with it" Garret's spry father Dodge (Paul Newman) advises. The advice sticks. So does the impact of this tender movingly filmed tale.

Rebecca Miller, Arthur Miller's daughter (and Daniel Day-Lewis' wife), discusses her father's legacy in a recent interview. She talks about her late father's loneliness during his last days and debunks accusations that he neglected her brother, who was institutionalized for Down syndrome. One of her novels, "The Private Lives of Pippa Lee", has been adapted into a film and chronicles the domestic unraveling of a middle-aged woman. The film will star Robin Wright Penn, Keanu Reeves, Maria Bello and Blake Lively among an all-star cast that also includes Julianne Moore, Monica Bellucci and Alan Arkin.

The article also points out the unconscious parallels that perhaps every writer inevitably imprints upon a work. Can one ever segregate the private from the professional as a writer? As someone once told me, rarely is anything original these days. Everything is derived from something else, no? In Miler's case, as the daughter of the renowned "Death of a Salesman" author who has come into her own despite her pedigree, the results are worth their telling.

THE PRINCESS BRIDE | A FILM BY ROB REINER
THE CLASSIC FAIRY-TALE LOVE STORY FEATURING BILLY CRYSTAL

THE PRINCESS BRIDE | A FILM BY ROB REINER

THE CLASSIC FAIRY-TALE LOVE STORY FEATURING BILLY CRYSTAL!

"When I was your age, "television" was called "books"."

With this, Grandpa (Peter Falk, TV's Columbo) introduces Grandson (Fred Savage, TV's The Wonder Years) to "The Princess Bride", S. Morgenstern's tale of high adventure. What follows is a delightful story interspersed with Grandpa and Grandson bantering about how to tell the story and other things. Director Rob Reiner (This is Spinal Tap) brings a great cast and a great script together to make one of the greatest films of all-time.

Buttercup (Robin Wright Penn, Forrest Gump) is a beautiful young lady on a farm in the countryside. She spends her time tormenting the farm boy, Westley (Cary Elwes, Saw). His only answer is "As you wish." Buttercup soon realizes that he means, "I love you," when he says that. Soon the couple are swept in love. Westley leaves to get money for marriage. But he is killed by the Dread Pirate Roberts, and Buttercup is devastated. Meanwhile, Prince Humperdink (Chris Sarandon, Dog Day Afternoon) has chosen her to be his bride. Buttercup doesn't love Humperdink, and only finds joy in her daily rides. On one of them, she is captured by the Sicilian genius Vizzini (Wallace Shawn, voice of Rex in Toy Story films) and his cohorts: the oft-drunk Spaniard Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin, TV's Criminal Minds) and Turkish wrestler Fezzik (Andre the Giant, WWF wrestling). Along the ride, they meet the Dread Pirate Roberts, go through the Fire Swamp, and encounter a very interesting character...Billy Crystal!

Though it was not a huge success at its release, The Princess Bride has grown in popularity, often being shown on network and cable television. There are many great points and few weak points about this movie.

Positives: The acting in this film is ridiculously good. Cary Elwes, Mandy Patinkin, and Robin Wright Penn all give great performances as the three leads. Chris Sarandon, Christopher Guest (as Humperdink's right-hand man Count Rugen) and Wallace Shawn give crazy great performances as supporting actors. And, Billy Crystal is hilarious as Miracle Max and Andre the Giant's transition from wrestler to actor is seamless. "It's not my fault I'm the biggest and the strongest. I don't even exercise." The script in this film is also ridiculously good. The Writers Guild of America named the screenplay the 84th greatest of all-time, beating films such as Forrest Gump and Memento. There are so many one-liners. Lemme give you a few here:

"Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."-Inigo Montoya

"I only dog paddle."-Fezzik's response to Vizzini's plea to jump into the water

"Ever heard of Plato, Aristotle, Socrates?...Morons."-Vizzini

"I always think everything could be a trap-which is why I'm still alive."-Humperdink to Rugen

"And this is for posterity, so, be honest."-Rugen to Westley

"Sonny, true love is the greatest thing in the world. Except for a nice MLT, a mutton, lettuce and tomato sandwich, where the mutton is nice and lean and the tomato is ripe. They're so perky, I love that. But that's not what he said. He distinctly said "to blave." And, as we all know, "to blave" means "to bluff," huh? So you're probably playing cards, and he cheated!"-Miracle Max

To name a few. The music is also very good. Mark Knopfler, former lead singer and guitarist of Dire Straits, composes the soundtrack and it is phenomenal.

The only complaint I have against The Princess Bride is the fact that is is somewhat predictable and cheesy. But the way that Reiner and screenwriter William Goldman, who also wrote the book, present the film is enough to make you forget that it is cheesy and a fairy tale. Performances by Crystal, Patinkin, Sarandon and Guest make this film worth seeing. It is in my top 3 films of all-time. It's probably the only one that will stay there forever.

Grade: A

I got to see Hurlyburly for the second time, it has become my 2nd favorite film of all time.

It is based on a great play, and has some of the sharpest, smartest dialogue I have ever heard,

it was hard to find clips for it, but check this out:

It stars a great cast including a great sean penn, a very sexy meg ryan (who does that tanktop-bra strap thing I have wrote about), a very sweet anna paquin, and many others.

the sean penn role reminds me of me when I was younger, wildier, and yes a little bit happier....

I wish I could find a clip of the end scene, it's pretty great.

Being based a masterpiece of classic literature Beowulf immediately had it’s work cut out for it, not to mention the fact that it has been adapted into different television and film versions as well. But Robert Zemeckis takes things a step further and decides to make a fully computer animated film. For the few of you that aren’t familiar with the story of Beowulf, it is about King Hrothgar in ancient Denmark. His Mead hall is attacked by the demon Grendel, who kills most of the kings men. Hrothgar announces he will give half of his kingdoms fortune to the hero who will kill Grendel. Men come from all ends of the world, all ending in their deaths, but Beowulf is not worried about his foe when he arrives. He lays and waits comfortably when Grendel bursts threw the huge Halls doors and begins tearing the men apart. With no fear Beowulf takes on Grendel removing his arm and thus ending his reign of terror. There is relief through the kingdom, but only briefly as they have by accident awakened an even greater foe. Grendel’s mother.

The most interesting aspect of this adaptation of Beowulf is the fact that it’s done completely in CGI. There is nothing cartoonesque about it. It is completely realistic other than the occasional awkward moment where you capture the non-humanness of the character or animal. The eyes even glisten with a real human feel. The immense scale on which the entire world of Denmark and Hrothgar’s hall has been created is beautiful, dark, and intriguing. When Beowulf battles the sea monsters, it’s almost plausible that they could or did exist in the past, along with Grendel, the diseased looking tormented demon.

The characters are rich, due to a century of existence and common knowledge of ideals. But due to some of sort of cliche antics along with some of the awkwardness of the CGI they somewhere lost some of the magic and depth I know so well in each of them. The fact that Wealthow actually looked like Princess Buttercup from the Princess Bride was no doubt a subconscious animation, but distracting every time Robin Wright Penn’s voice sounded. All I could picture was Buttercup. The actual character of Beowulf looked so much like Sean Bean I thought I was watching Lord Of The Rings instead of Beowulf’s tale. The only non-distracting performance was that of Hrothgar and Grendel’s mother. Anthony Hopkins and Angelina Jolie’s voice overs were impeccable. Robin Wright Penn’s might have been if not for the annoying likeness to her youthful character.

The story was played out nicely enough, and the eerie build up to the climax was entertaining enough, but the main part of the story just lacked a life that it needed to connect the viewer. It opened some doors visually and gets kudos for trying something old and making it new, but in the end was just okay. Beowulf gets two out of four stars.

Beowulf (2007): This didn't exactly work for me. The animation was sometimes excellent and sometimes uneven. I noticed it over and over again and it bothered me.

The story more-or-less followed the original as I remember it. Beowulf (Ray Winstone) comes to the kingdom of Hrothgar (Anthony Hopkins) which has been haunted or hunted by a bloodthirsty monster called Grendal (Crispin Glover). Beowulf waits all night for the monster to show up and tears off its arm. Then he heads off to its watery, underground lair to find and kill Grendal. Things go a bit off-track here but the ending was more-or-less on target.

The theme did confuse me though. What were the creators (Robert Zemeckis, Neil Gaiman, et. al.) trying to get across?

Heroism is a damaging illusion?

Don't believe everything you hear/read?

Old English narrative poetry is suspect?

Heroes are only human (except they can survive being whomped by monsters)?

Having sex with a sea hag is good for your career?

Angelina Jolie looks like a girl in a superhero comic when she's naked?

Anthony Hopkins doesn't?

In my confusion, I turned my, not very pleased, thoughts to the female characters. I thought about the little wooden signs the female characters were holding. Grendal's mom Angelina Jolie) had "Femme Fatale"; Wealthow (Robin Wright Penn) had "Doormat." Gitte (Sonje Fortag) had "Boobs" and Ursula (Alison Lohman) was left with "Huh?" I was kind of hoping Wealthow would hit Beowulf with her sign at which Grendel's mom would snicker and Ursula would choose "sympathetic" in hopes that it is the right expression.

A sick boy (Fred Savage) is visited by his eccentric grandfather( Peter Falk) who brings him a book that the boy has little interest in, thinking it a mushy love story, but after his quirky grandfather catches his interest by explaining that it’s not just a love story, but an adventure, his grandson’s interest is perked and suddenly he wants to hear the story of Buttercup and Wesley. It is here, the narration of the story begins.

In a land far far away a beautiful girl named Buttercup ( Robin Wright Penn) falls in love with a farm boy named Wesley (Cary Elwes). The farm boy says nothing to Buttercup other than, “As you wish”, though this phrase speaks a thousand words. He leaves for a short time and in his absence she is set to be married to Prince Humperdink (Chris Sarandon) and is taken to his castle. She takes a leisurely horse ride and is kidnapped by three bumbling bandits. It isn’t long before a pirate dressed all in black is on the trail of the Bandits and closing in quickly. It is soon revealed that this is no ordinary pirate but is actually Wesley in search of saving his beloved Buttercup. Along his journey to save Buttercup he makes allegiances that later play prevalent roles in the climax of the story, until Wesley must finally try and steal his love back from the grasps of Prince Humperdink himself.

The Princess Bride is structured around the idea that love conquers all. But in this story of giants, coward princes, men with extra limbs, sword fights, torture, revenge, bandits, pirates, heroes and true love it’s told through a realm of comedy along with it’s epic scope. With a perfectly structured cast and fantastic screenplay it is entirely conceivable. Wesley’s unconditional love for Buttercup enables us to believe that love has no boundaries. And Buttercups conviction that he will rescue her from her fate as Humperdinks wife is unwavering. The final sword fights are meticulously choreographed and are one of the most exciting and technical ever on film. Rob Reiner captures the perfect balance of action with comedy while giving the film it’s overall feel of utter sweetness.

It is essentially a fairy tale made for the old, the young and the in between. The Princess Bride will be able to be enjoyed for all time and is a movie everyone should put on their list to see. In an over the top way it creates a mystic fun world that everyone wants to be part of. Cheers for Buttercup and Wesley. Four out of Four stars.

Last weekend I saw the 2007 flick, “Beowolf,” on DVD. Initially, I was not impressed because I'm not a big fan of movies which apply CGI or computer-generated imagery. I can only appreciate this type of visual on video games but never in movies.

Moving on, I saw Anthony Hopkins and Robin Wright Penn so I decided to continue with this viewing session even though I'm not watching the real actors. But I didn't focus on the early scenes of the movie. So what if the monster barges into the binging and drinking session of King Hrothgar to rip bodies and hurl human limbs. Sheeesh, I saw this before.

It was only upon seeing the main character, Beowolf, that I turned serious. When he said, “If we die it will be for glory, not gold,” I realized I have to see what this hero's going to do with the monster, Grendel.

Unfortunately, I fell asleep. Surprisingly, I woke up with the line “If we die it will be for glory, not gold” echoing in my head so when night crept in, I opted to watch the movie again. This time, I made it a point to finish it.

It wasn't bad, after all.

As I remember waking up with Beowolf's dialogue in my head, I came up with a list of other movie lines that have had the same effect on me as that of Beowolf.

* “I made a promise and I kept it. Most people would have done the same.” (from “It Could Happen To You”)

* “I want some more” (from “Interview with the Vampire”)

* “If I know I am remembered that way, I can face anything, anything. You're my immortality.” (from “Sweet November”)

* “I might run away without your permission and you might hate me forever, and I know that scares the shit out of you because I'm the only real thing that you have.” (from “Reality Bites”)

* “I'm funny how, I mean funny like I'm a clown, I amuse you? I make you laugh, I'm here to fuckin' amuse you? What do you mean funny, funny how? How am I funny? (from “Goodfellas”)

I was planning to write an entry today on John Sayles' Limbo, but that has to wait until tomorrow or the day after. Since my browser start page is BBC news, I've just read that Anthony Minghella has died. I've written about his films before (e.g. here and here); I liked many of the films I'd seen that he'd directed, and those I didn't like I still appreciated. He knew how to work with actors that I didn't particularly like (such as Gwyneth Paltrow or Robin Wright Penn). And he directed the film that convinced me that Alan Rickman wasn't Evil(tm):

So, as I said on this blog somewhere once before, I was raised with a family who loved quoting movies. I was lucky to find (and marry) a man after my own heart. All of our friends (minus ONE and she knows who she is ;) ) are also movie quoters....and I hope my children grow up to be too!

I think I failed to mention that not only do we quote movies but we make it a game when we do. We say the quote and say name that movie or here is a movie title give me a quote. So I thought it would be fun to list some quotes and you give me the movie name. No Cheating by looking it up!

"I need your clothes, boots and your motorcycle."

"Why's all the rum gone?"

"Fortune and glory, kid. Fortune and glory."

"As you wish."

"Get your pretty little portfolio off my desk before I go into a diabetic coma!"

"All I care about is: are you happy with your haircut?"

"That son of a bitch cut me off!"

"Did you know if you mixed equal parts of gasoline and frozen orange juice concentrate you can make napalm?"

"Are you telling me that this sucker is nuclear?"

"I'm not questioning your powers of observation I'm merely remarking upon the paradox of asking a masked man who he is."

"You ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?"

"The Lord tells me he can get *me* out of this mess, but He's pretty sure you're f#%$ed.

"I love hitmen. No matter what you do to them, you don't feel bad."

"Then the next time she squawks, walk right up to her and spit in her eye. That's what I'd do."
