Def Leppard brought the new wave of British heavy metal to the masses, hitting the big time with “Photograph” from the Pyromania album. But nothing could have prepared Joe Elliott and company for the success of 1987’s Hysteria. The Mutt Lange-produced masterpiece contains some of the greatest hard rock songs known to man: “Pour Some Sugar On Me,” “Rocket,” “Animal,” “Women,” “Armageddon It.” The band’s sales have declined since then, just as their ability to write good songs has withered away. There are still a few hidden gems on post-Hysteria releases, such as “Let’s Get Rocked” and “Now,” but for the most part they could have stopped after 1987 and they would still top the list of hard rock bands starting with the letter “D.”

Saturday night, Chris and I headed out to the Woodlands to take in the spectacle that was the Metal Masters Tour.  Headlined by Judas Priest and featuring Heaven & Hell (aka Black Sabbath the Dio Years), Motorhead and Testament, it promised to be a nice of head banging goodness.

This show was especially exciting for me because, somehow, during my head banging youth, I never managed to see Priest, Sabbath, Dio or Motorhead.  Now, I had the opportunity knock them all out in one night!

We arrived early enough to allow Chris to buy a Priest t-shirt for his IT guy.  Thanks IT guy for rebuilding the computer.  Rock hard!  Ride free!

After acquiring a couple of beers, we found a nice spot about mid-way up the hill in stage center.  Then we prepared to rock!

Testament was the first band out.  Recently reunited and, to paraphrase Chris, still thrashing like it was 1986.  Its always odd to see a band like Testament on in the broad daylight.  Clad all in black they got the crowd warmed up.  The crowd was sparse, but the ones who were present were devoted.  They complied each and every time they were told to get the horns in the air.

Once Testament was done with their abbreviated set, the crowd stared to fill up.  We saw skinheads, middle-aged white guys, their wives, their kids and a whole variety of folks. 

Apparently Latinos love the metal, because they made up a huge portion of our audience, especially the younger portion of the crowd.

I was also happy to see a few examples of the Tawny Kitaen school of Metal Girls in attendance.  I was pretty sure they were extinct.

Motorhead hit the stage next to the delight of the ever enlarging crowd.  Lemmy and Motorhead are like the heavy metal version of the Ramones.  They come out and just play.  They are supporting their new record, Motorizer, which came out last Tuesday.  How they haven't used that name for an album before is beyond me.  It was an abbreviated set, but by the time they got to "Killed by Death," Lemmy had the crowd eating out of his hand.

I wasn't at all suprised to see Iron Maiden's Eddie at this show.

This guy lost huge metal points for his Bolton mullet and the fact that he was using a fan provided by the local 80s station (oddly the only one in attedance) to cool himself off.  You sweat for the metal!

Up next was Heaven & Hell.  This is, of course, the new stage name for the band formerly known as "Black Sabbath" (with Ronnie James Dio on vocals.)  Whether you believe Tony Iommi' explanation that he doesn't use the Sabbath name for these tours because the original four members were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, or you think it is some dastardly plot by Sharon Osbourne,  the fact remains that this is a classic heavy metal band.  They stuck entirely to the four albums released by this lineup.  There was no "Paranoid," "War Pigs," or "Iron Man."  Instead, we got amazing versions of "Mob Rules," "Heaven and Hell," "Falling of the Edge of the World," and "Neon Knights" as an encore.

Ronnie James Dio has not lost a step.  Hit Parader once described him as leather lunged.  How very apt that description still is.  Dio seemed to mumble a lot of his crowd interaction, but it didn't really matter because he ruled the stage.  Appice took a drum solo (what?) and Tony Iommi showed how he essentially created the metal genre with his solo.

Then it was on to the evening's headliners, Judas Priest.  The Metal Gods are on the road in support of their new concept album "Nostradamus."  They opened with the title track.

We used to argue over which of Priest's guitarists, Tipton or Downing, was better.  After watching them tear up their respective axes all night, I still don't know.

Rob Halford stalked the stage all night like a caged animal.  Clad in various leathers, including his trademark hat and sunglasses for "Hellbent for Leather," he remains the consumate metal front man.  After 30+ years, he's still showing everyone else how it should be done.

My main complaint was the seeming randomness of Priest's set list.  It was all over the place, with some glaring omissions.  They ended with "You've Got Another Thing Coming" with no encore.

My most pleasant surprise?  They did "Grenn Manalishi with the Two-Pronged Crown."

All in all it was a really good show and I'd like to thank all the bands involved for bringing the metal to the people.  In this age of pre-fab non talents, its really great to see real bands who are willing to work night after night.

Get those horns up!

Veteran British all-female hard rock band GIRLSCHOOL will release its 30th-anniversary album, "Legacy", on October 24 in Germany, October 27 in Europe and November 4 in the USA via Wacken Records/SPV. The CD will feature a plethora of special guests, including Tony Iommi (BLACK SABBATH), Ronnie James Dio (BLACK SABBATH, RAINBOW, DIO), Lemmy and Phil Campbell from MOTÖRHEAD, "Fast" Eddie Clarke (FASTWAY, ex-MOTÖRHEAD) and a couple of members of TWISTED SISTER. Even the group's original guitarist Kelly Johnson, who died last year, can be heard on the opener "Everything 's The Same" with a special ghost appearance!

This is a METAL CD you will want to listen to all year round.

Wendy says, “It has been a very exciting and exhausting project, but we have managed to get an all star cast together.

”The hardest person to get was Ronnie himself, as he told Wendy he doesn’t sing Christmas songs, but after Wendy hounded him for days, he finally listened to the arrangement Bob had come up with for “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”, decided he liked it, added a few bits, recorded it at Bob’s studio, and then said that it needed Tony Iommi’s signature guitar sound. Wendy then sent the track over to Tony, who also liked the track, and behold! You have a very Sabbath Christmas song.

Also rounding out the circle of familiar characters on this track are Dio bassist Rudy Sarzo and drummer Simon Wright.

All of the tracks on the record are awesome and definitely have Wendy’s stamp of approval.

No word on when this will be released, but I am guessing this will be out in time for the '08 Christmas Holiday Season.

Mötorhead hits stores today with a new album, Mötorizer.   It's the 24th album for this venerable metal trio, led by bassist/head growler Lemmy Kilmister and aided and abetted by mainstays Phil Campbell (guitar) and Mikkey Dee (drums).  Lemmy is 62 years old, but he hasn't slowed down - if you know anything about Mötorhead, you know their rock is basic, straightforward and in-your-face like a Pittsburgh Steelers lineman.  Mötorizer, energized by tunes like "Rock Out" (an anthem) and "Runaround Man," is out of control like a Harley on a kindergarten playground.

Black Ice, the first studio album in eight years from AC/DC, goes on sale Oct. 20 exclusively at Wal-Mart, Sam's Club and the AC/DC website.  No word yet on what extras the package will contain, but it's likely one bundle will include a DVD with a 1996 show from Madrid.  And a few weeks later, the Scottish-Australian rock unit will mount a world tour, their first since 2001.  We couldn't get our hands on any downloads, but the AC/DC website has some tantalizing snippets from Black Ice.

Something else to look forward to: this fall, Eagle Records plans to release a star-studded Metal Christmas album featuring Ronnie James Dio, Alice Cooper, Mötorhead meister Lemmy, and ex-Styx-ster Tommy Shaw singing traditional holiday carols.  Guitarists Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath), Steve Lukather (Toto),  Ace Frehley (Kiss), Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top) and Steve Morse (Kansas, Deep Purple) will be among the guest instrumentalists.  Also: the Dio-led version of Black Sabbath gets the box set treatment in The Rules of Hell, featuring the three studio albums and Live Evil, a double-disc live album, completely remastered.

Fresh from headlining Ozzfest 2008, Metallica unleashes its new album Death Magnetic on Sept. 12.  Produced by Rick Rubin, the album is Metallica's ninth studio set and the first to feature new bassist Robert Trujillo (Black Label Society, Ozzy Osbourne).  The first single is "The Day That Never Comes."  You can stream other previews at the Metallica website.  UPDATE: "My Apocalypse" is the second single.

It was a beautifully metal moment: at the same moment guitar god Tony Iommi begins his bone-chilling solo in the song "Time Machine," a bolt of lightning slashes across the sky above the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.  The Masters of Metal tour rolled through Houston Saturday night (Aug. 23) and despite this impromptu effect, most of the pyrotechnics were on the stage.

The bill included Testament, Motörhead, Heaven and Hell and headliners Judas Priest.  That lightning bolt may have been a sign from an irritated deity, because Heaven and Hell should'a been the headliners.  Formerly Black Sabbath (the band reserves that name for the lineup that includes Ozzy Osbourne) and led by Ronnie James Dio, the veteran heavy rockers turned in a short set that rocked from start to finish.  The highlights included opener "The Mob Rules" and, of course, an extended "Heaven and Hell" that closed the set.  But the crowd, roused by Dio's supreme showmanship and Iommi's brilliant lead guitar, begged for more and they got a rockin' "Neon Knights."

Motörhead, led by former Hendrix roadie Lemmy Kilmister, also rocked.  They wisely kept songs from their newest, Motörized, to a minimum but turned in great versions of their masterpieces "Ace Of Spades" and "Killed By Death" as their 11-song set hit the homestretch.  My favorite moment of the entire evening was right after "Ace," Lemmy said: "Don't forget us.  We are Motörhead, and we play ROCK AND ROLL!!!"

By the time Judas Priest hit the stage, the crowd may have been a little over-rocked and the Priest's pompous stage act didn't help.  After a ponderous instrumental intro, the song "Prophecy" from their latest album Nostradamus started things off with lead singer Rob Halford all but unrecognizable in a silvery hooded robe.  The Priest's onstage momentum halted time and again as most of the band (except the drummer) left the stage after each song, presumably to switch out instruments and in Halford's case, a quick costume change. 

But the Priest's songs were just not as good as Heaven and Hell's: although Halford and Co. ripped through many of their familiar songs it was kind of tough to know what was what due to a muddy sound system.  For the encore Halford, dressed like the gay biker in the Village People, roared out on a motorcycle and delivered "Hell Bent For Leather" before the band finally closed it out with "You've Got Another Thing Coming." 

No lightning bolts here - Judas Priest rocked Houston right up to the 11 p.m. curfew, but Heaven and Hell had the Metal Gods on their side.

In the mid-1980s, everyone was in tune to the plight of Africans starving to death during a famine.  It all started with Band Aid in England, which put out the Christmas single "Do They Know It's Christmas," then with USA For Africa artists doing "We Are The World."  There was very little representation among metal artists, so two members of Ronnie James Dio's band approached their boss with the idea to do a metal song for famine relief.

The result was "Stars," written by Dio with Jimmy Bain (of Rainbow and Dio) and Vivian Campbell (Dio, but later Whitesnake and Def Leppard).  Forty artists from the metal genre gathered to record the single in Hollywood.  Among the artists appearing were members of such bands as Dio, Quiet Riot, Iron Maiden, Twisted Sister, Night Ranger, Judas Priest, Mötley Crüe, Blue Öyster Cult, Journey, Dokken and others.

"Stars" came out as a single, and it appeared on the Hear N' Aid album with a bunch of live songs from bands like Kiss, Mötorhead and others.   Due to delays with record label red tape, the single and album didn't appear until 1986 - still, it made about $1 million for famine relief.

Everyone knows that the King ov Rawk is the one, the only, Ronnie James Dio, whose pipes of power have reigned o'er us for aeons, since the days of Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio and Heaven & Hell.

Some may even remember the diminutive one from his time with the appropriately named Elf and / or Electric Elves. But the Ronster, as no-one calls him, predates the age of rawk, having first come to light in medieval times as a court jester, village idiot and prototype munchkin.

And it is back to those shameful times that we're going today, torches in hand, garlic round out necks, peering into dark crevices where no man should venture unlubricated.

Back in 1058, Dio was bass player with Ronnie & The Redcaps, leaving the vocal duties up to the brilliantly named Billy De Wolf, releasing a horrendous single called 'Lover'.

Dio finally started to rock the mic when the band changed name to Ronnie & The Prophets, giving it some Ray Charles on a 1460 B-side with 'What'd I Say'. The Prophets also had a crack at 'Love Potion No 9', even if it does pale next to the Tygers of Pan Tang version.

But most shameful of all is the following track. It's your drunk uncle at the wedding reception all over again, as the King ov Rawk gives it his all on 'I Left My Heart In San Francisco'. That's the sound of my heart breaking.

Descreve ainda que está "muito satisfeito" com o que a banda conseguiu até agora e que o novo material "está muito bom, poderoso".

La maquinaria de Black Sabbath sigue generando dólares. Tras el recopilatorio, la gira y el disco de Heaven & Hell ahora, Tony Iommi y Ronnie James Dio desempolvan los archivos de la banda de Birmingham y editan una caja con las versiones remasterizadas de los discos que los Sabbath grabaron con el diminuto cantante.

Así, The Rules Of Hell, que suena eso sí a lanzamiento oportunista, incluye los álbumes "Heaven And Hell", "Mob Rules", "Dehumanizer" y el doble directo "Live Evil". Muchos seguidores de Dio siempre han minusvalorado estos trabajos, colocándolos un listón por debajo de los grabados por Ozzy Osbourne.

Ahora, nos los encontramos en esta bonita caja, con el sonido restaurado, notas y entrevistas con el grupo, que estará en las tiendas más exclusivas que todos conocéis.

Por tanto, mientras esperamos por el anunciado nuevo trabajo de Dio, Iommi y compañía, que probablemente estará disponible el próximo año pero lo que es seguro que irá firmado como Heaven & Hell, pues el nombre está registrado por Ozzy, aquí tenemos esta caja.

Una caja que no podemos decir que es de lujo como la Black Box: "The Complete Original Black Sabbath 1970-1978". Rhino podría haber aprovechado para esta lanzamiento una edición como se merece de los compactos en digipak acompañado de un DVD con material de archivo y un libreto enorme con fotografías inéditas y toda la verdad y nada más que la verdad sobre la alianza de Dio y los Sabbath. Por pedir que no quede, los seguidores de la banda la estábamos esperando.

The great thing about watching Metal Mania is that approximately every three minutes or so, you get a good giggle because some video comes on that you'd totally forgotten about, but with that opening chord and first scene, you realize that not only are this song and video pretty funny now, but they were also pretty damn funny twenty years ago.

So here's what occurred to me over two hours of Metal Mania:

1. Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, and Poison are not, and never were, metal bands. Metal bands are composed of the kinds of guys who look like they're going to break into your house and eat your kids. The only reason Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, and Poison would break into your house would be to steal your hairspray and mousse.

2. Closely related to #1, between videos we saw a commercial for Poison lead singer Bret Michaels' "highly anticipated" solo album, which I'm assuming is only "highly anticipated" by women waiting to try out for the third season of Rock of Love.

3. Also related to #1: We were treated to the video for Def Leppard's "Love Bites," a song that actually bites every bit as much now as it did twenty-one years ago, but it's always nice to be reminded. This video was followed up by what Vh1 Classic terms a "Classic Current"--an oxymoron that also turned out to be moronic as the video was for "Nine Lives," Def Leppard's unholy alliance with country star Tim McGraw. This song is totally unworthy of either Def Leppard or McGraw which, considering I'm not a fan of either, is really an accomplishment. "Nine Lives" may, in fact, be one of the shittiest songs ever recorded, right up there with "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)," except I'm going to go out on a limb and boldly predict that no one will ever be doing Karaoke to "Nine Lives."

"Nine Lives" is available on the album Songs from the Sparkle Lounge, which may be the most un-metal name for an album in the history of album titles. My guess is that they thought about titling the disc Cabaret until they remembered that was already taken.

4. Despite all the hair and makeup and leather pants, guys in heavy metal bands are not a good-looking lot. If most heavy metal band members had done something else with their lives--like, say, getting a nice job at a bank or something--none of them would have ever gotten laid.

5. Geoff Tate of Queensryche (which is more of a prog-metal band than a heavy metal band per se) had without question one of the most incredible mullets of the '80s. From the front, he sort of looked like he had some kind of 1950s ducktail action going on, but then he turns around and--surprise!--he's got his long hair pulled back into a ponytail.

Queensryche also has a completely illogical and unnecessary umlaut over the "y," which I can't figure out how to represent with the word processing tools available to me here. But as we all know umlauts = metal, so it's all good.

6. I think Ronnie James Dio and Klaus Meine of Scorpions may have been separated at birth. Seriously--same hair, they look about the same height...or maybe they're the same person. If anyone's ever seen them together in the same room at the same time and can disprove my theory, let me know.

7. While I got a good chuckle watching everything else on this list, I have to say that Pantera is not, nor was ever, funny. Pantera does not have time to be funny because they are too busy kicking your ass. Every band out right now that plays their instruments really fast and sings songs that consist of lyrics that sound like "RAAAAAAWWWWWWWWRRRR" owes a serious debt to Pantera.

Although, on second thought, "Cowboys from Hell," as song titles go, is pretty damn funny.

8. And my final musing, one I so often have whenever I watch anything on Vh1 Classic, is that I'm really freakin' old. Almost every memory I have attached to these songs/videos dates from my junior year of high school or earlier. My hubby and I were trying to remember when "Rock You Like a Hurricane" came out, and the only memory I could conjure up was singing the song outside my church with a few other kids before we went inside to confirmation class (which is just the kind of reception the band was aiming for, I'm sure), which would have grounded the song firmly in 1984.

1984 was twenty-eight years ago, for those of you keeping score. And so on that note, I decided to go to bed, because at my age, I really need to be sure I'm getting plenty of sleep. But I didn't have to worry about missing anything because thanks to Vh1 Classic, the metal will always be there when I wake up.

"Seeing people like Dio and Halford that are much older than me just go out there and rip shit up. I don't think I'll be playing as long or until as old as they are, because our show is more physical but inspiring to see people like that just kick your ass."

Quite a compliment from the lead guitarist of the heaviest band on earth (sorry, no matter how old they are, they are the real thing as far as heavy is concerned). King definitely knows who still kicks ass, as he put it.

Empezamos mes con más música, un nuevo video; dejo de lado un poco la "metalurgia" (en realidad solamente un poco) para poner algo de Rap en español, temazo de ToteKing, una canción archiconocida por otra parte ya, pero bueno no quería dejar pasar el recomendarlo, el video en sí tambien es un puntazo, la letra muy buena, y encima con Dio de fondo ¿no está mal eh? disfrútalo si aún no lo conocias.

De un tiempo para acá en el mundo de los videojuegos se dio el boom por sacar instrumentos de plástico para crear juegos de ritmo, el mas popular hasta estos momentos es Guitar Hero (Rockband se le acerca pero su precio prohibitivo suele ser una limitante) estos juegos son muy entretenidos, en lo personal los disfruto, pero como todo, lo malo llega cuando se abusa y se crea un estilo de vida en torno a esos juegos.

A la juventud mas ñoña, el nicho de los Machos Omega, el eslabón mas bajo de la cadena alimenticia, justo por debajo del plancton, gueyes quienes compran cojines con forma de viejas y que a su mano derecha llaman Doris, les a dado por entirse rockers porque hacen chorrosientosmil veinticuatro puntos en ese pinché juego, les tengo una noticia pendejos, ser buenos con un pinche instrumento de plástico no sirve para ni madres, o que?, me van a decir que el ser el puesto numero 24 entre 5000 ñoños que juegan en linea les consiguió una novia supermodelo… ok bueno dejémoslo en, les consiguió una novia, no verdad!!!!!

El comercial va directo al grano, no mamen, aprendan un instrumento de verdad, lo que nos da una valiosa lección de vida, los videojuegos son poca madre, son muy divertidos y son buenos para entretener a los pinches chamaquitos latosos, pero no mamen, dosifiquen, hay mas de 15,000 actividades que pueden realizar fuera de su casa, no le tengan miedo a salir y a hacer muchos amigos (otro dato, porque parece que no se han dado cuenta, pero sus pinches amigos que conocieron en  Myspace o Hi5 tampoco cuentan), tengan novia real, las novias virtuales son una mamada y no hay pendejada mas grande que el cibersexo, además, el 98.5% de las viejas que ligan por internets están mas feas que el trasero de carmen salinas o son curas pederastas de alguna iglesia.

Yo no estoy en contra de ese tipo de juegos de video, al contrario, pero si estoy en contra de los gueyes que se creen “bad-ass” porque conocieron a Dragonforce gracias al guitar hero 3 y piensan que es la neta del universo, que salen a la calle usando tatuajes falsos que vienen en los productos ricolino y que para colmo visten de negro pero por dentro traen calzones rosas, pinches Posers, lo único peor que ustedes son los Emos, eh dicho!.

Para esta entrada, la principal fuente de inspiración ha sido THE MUSICIAN´S OLYMPUS ... una de esas joyitas de página que cuesta encontrar, pero que esconde toneladas de información. Encima hecha aquí, por un tal Miguel Terol. Pena que no esté en castellano... Y a partir de allí... "SAN YOUTUBE", "SANTA WIKIPEDIA" y algún que otro sitio más...

Allá va:

1. "INTRO"

SOLO BATERÍA RESURRECTION/1812 OUVERTURE

"Cuando tocas en un grupo, el sentido del espectáculo siempre intenta salir a flote, pero lo tienes que controlar. Cuando tienes la oportunidad y te dicen "Aprovéchala", golpeas con todo lo que tienes, cueste lo que cueste. No estoy diciendo que así "disimulo" mi forma de tocar, y que si no usase efectos no podría tocar. Puedo tocar, pero... de verdad me gusta usarlos, y el tipo de grupos con los que he tocado, afortunadamente, me dieron tiempo y dinero para gastar en todos estos efectos. Al parecer son resultones... Además, los disfruto.

En Rainbow llegué a usar la Obertura 1812 de Tchaikovsky con la Orquesta Sinfónica de Minneapolis. Yo iba a tocar con esto de base y habría un montón de luces y efectos. Lo ves y no lo crees. Era solo yo tocando un kit, pero cuando ves una orquesta de 66 instrumentistas, un coro, unos cuantos petardos y humo es inolvidable, te guste la batería o no. Siempre intenté hacer un solo que fuera espectacular"

El principio de este pequeño homenaje pero enorme tocho nos lleva a Cirencester, Inglaterra, al día de 29 de Diciembre de 1947, lugar y fecha de nacimiento de Colin Powell. Sus primeros pinitos con las percusiones los hace en la orquesta de su escuela y el primer grupo en el que toca es "The Corals". A los 15 años ya se adivina que va a ser un batería excepcional. Lo de "Cozy" viene al parecer de Cozy Cole, un baterista de jazz que a finales de los 50 es de los pocos percusionistas en colocar un tema con un solo eterno de batería en el top BILLBOARD HOT 100.

¿Cómo y cuándo has empezado a tocar la batería?
Cozy: Empecé en el colegio. Me metí en una orquesta escolar, hice un montón de ruido, acabé destrozando un tambor y me pidieron que tocase los platillos, porque estos eran mucho más difíciles de romper.

Poco después, conoce a los hermanos Ball, todos ellos músicos locales: Pete Ball, teclista; Denny Ball, bajo y Dave Ball, guitarrista. Su amistad con ellos lo va a introducir en la música profesional, lo va a llevar a tocar varios palos del rock (cada uno de los hermanos tenía sus gustos musicales muy diferenciados y durante bastante tiempo fueron por su cuenta en lo musical), a la vez que le va brindar la oportunidad de conocer al legendario Jeff Beck.

2. LOS HERMANOS BALL, JEFF BECK Y UN MARTILLO:

Hacia 1965 Pete Ball, líder de THE SORCERERS, le ofrece las baquetas de su banda. Cozy es la primera vez que vive de la música, tocando en Inglaterra, Alemania y Turquía. Graba un single en Alemania. Frikez de coleccionista, que si no fuera porque Cozy habla de ella en alguna entrevista, nadie sabría de su existencia.

A lo largo de los siguientes 6-7 años, Cozy participa en los distintos proyectos de cada uno de los hermanos Ball. Primero con Pete en SORCERERS y YOUNGBLOOD, luego con Dave y Denny en IDEAL MILK y ACE KEFFORD STAND para finalmente reunir a los tres hermanos en BIG BERTHA.

En 1970 Jeff Beck le propone unirse a su... "proyecto de proyecto", en ese momento formado todavía solo por Jeff y Cozy. Cozy acepta y los dos se van a Detroit, a los estudios de la Motown a grabar un album de versiones. Que nunca llega a ver la luz.

¿Cómo has acabado trabajando para Jeff Beck?
Cozy: Le fuí recomendado a Peter Grant, el manager de Jeff por entonces. Un tío llamado Phil Myatt, que era el manager de los MOTHERS CLUB, le dijo que había un par de buenos bateristas en Birmingham. Un tío llamado John Bonham, otro Cozy Powell. Como se dice, el resto es historia. John justo acababa de incorporarse a los The New Yardbirds, con Jimmy y Robert, que eran buenos amigos míos. (...)
¿Qué pasó con el album de versiones de la Motown que grabaste con Jeff Beck?
(...) Es una de las cosas más extrañas que hice jamás. Me dieron una copia, una cinta. (...) Nos fuimos a Detroit con la idea de Jeff de grabar un disco con los éxitos de la Motown, básicamente como un álbum instrumental. Él quería trabajar con instrumentistas de los estudios de la Motown. Yo acababa de empezar, porque su idea original había sido encontrar primero un batería. Me encontró, hice la audición, me dió el trabajo y lo siguiente que sé es que nos vamos a la Motown a hacer este álbum. Grabamos Reach out I'll Be There, Losing You, cosas así. Al final fueron 7 u 8 pistas con las bases ya acabadas. Jeff hizo la parte de la guitarra rítmica, todavía no había empezado con los solos y por alguna razón no le gustó como sonaba, o Micky Most [n.r. el productor del disco], o lo que fuera. Así que el album nunca vió la luz del día.

En abril de 1971 Jeff Beck ya forma un grupo en condiciones, el JEFF BECK GROUP, obviamente con Cozy, pero esta vez ya con una formación más o menos estable, con bajo, voz y teclados. Tocan versiones de Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, algún blues clásico, temas instrumentales... y todo esto dura hasta 1972, cuando Beck logra juntar la formación con la cual llevaba un tiempo soñando y por diferentes razones no había podido reunir antes, un trío con Carmine Appice a la batería y Tim Boggert al bajo.

A finales de ese año nace la última evolución de IDEAL MILK y BIG BERTHA. Se llama BEDLAM. Graban un disco con el mismo nombre, y duran hasta 1974. A partir de allí, Dave acaba en PROCOL HARUM y Cozy arranca junto a amigos y ex-compañeros de grupos anteriores COZY POWELL'S HAMMER. El nombre le viene que ni pintado a la manera de tocar de Cozy... no obstante, el sonido es mucho más de influencias jazz de lo que os podríais imaginar. El invento no dura mucho más de un año. Eso sí, lo que va a ser una constante a lo largo de su carrera es la presencia de viejos amigos de Cozy en sus distintos proyectos, por pequeños o grandes que fueran.

La primavera de 1975 es muy agitada. El siguiente experimento se llama STRANGE BREW, banda en la línea de CREAM. Pero menos de dos meses después, también se volatiliza. Y entonces el camino de Cozy se cruza con el de Ritchie Blackmore...

3. DE RAINBOW A WHITESNAKE

Por aquel entonces Ritchie Blackmore, recién separado de DEEP PURPLE, está intentando consolidar un nuevo grupo, llamado RAINBOW.

Blackmore: Dejé Deep Purple porque se estaban volviendo demasiado espirituales. Querían ser un grupo enrollado. Todo debía estar en su sitio. No había muchas oportunidades y ciertamente se estaba convirtiendo en algo aburrido para mí. Esa es la razón por la que me salí de aquello. Era todo demasiado plastificado y bonito. No me gusta hacer hermosos pequeños álbumes únicamente pensando en si venderán o no. Me gusta el LP que se encuentre fuera de las expectativas del público.

Lo siguiente fue la necesidad de encontrar y reclutar a un baterista.
Blackmore: Me puse en contacto con Cozy en 1975 y le pregunté si podría pasarse por Los Ángeles y hacer una prueba para la banda. Ya habíamos probado a doce bateristas y ninguno cumplía con lo esperado para el proyecto. Cozy llegó al lugar, tocó durante veinte minutos y pasó a ser el tercer miembro de Rainbow. Su sentido del tiempo es perfecto.
Powell: En aquel momento no estaba pensando en unirme a un conjunto, pero cuando Ritchie me llamó me picó el gusanillo. Yo ya había trabajado con Jeff Beck, así que la oportunidad de tocar con otro de los grandes guitarristas de la escena me atrajo. Conocía de sobra su música y su actitud profesional. Quiere lo mejor de sus músicos pues él siempre les dará lo mejor de sí mismo como instrumentista.

El espectáculo se ha terminado. Cozy Powell se encuentra en una esquina del camerino. Marcas de sudor le recorren hasta caer a sus pies. Su largo y oscuro pelo cuelga como mojadas colas de rata. Pierde peso en cada concierto de Rainbow.
Powell: ¿Cómo me siento ahora? Destrozado. Así debe ser. Me gusta sentirme exhausto. De la forma en que lo veo, la gente que viene a vernos ha tenido que trabajar muy duro para poder comprar una entrada, así que tengo la obligación de darles un buen espectáculo.
La entrega de Cozy con Rainbow es total.
Powell: Creo realmente en esta banda. Pienso que la música es fuerte y siento que progreso a cada paso. Soy muy directo a la hora de acercarme a la vida. Eso se ve en mi forma de tocar... en todo lo que hago. Por eso estoy feliz en Rainbow, es un proyecto honesto. Si tienes algo que te ronda por la cabeza debes decirlo. Así me gusta a mí.
Con Rainbow se ha convertido en el bromista que lleva a cabo todo lo que se propone: escalar fachadas de hoteles alemanes, disparar extintores dentro de las habitaciones,... todo ello confirma la teoría de que los bateristas están un poco locos. De hecho, todas estas gamberradas aparecen como resultado del aburrimiento y la rutina de cada una de esas “glamourosas” giras.
Powell: Sí, la gente piensa que tiene glamour, ¿verdad? Cierto es que el tiempo pasado sobre el escenario resulta genial, aunque el resto es puro aburrimiento. La rutina puede llevarte al límite. En la medida de lo posible procuro conducir por mi cuenta de ciudad en ciudad. Utilizo mi moto BMW de 1000cc o el Ferrari, depende del tiempo. Si hace bueno prefiero la moto.
Ningún miembro del grupo ha montado con Powell.
Powell: Me encantan esos viajes. Puedo quemar mis inhibiciones bajo las ruedas. Conduzco rápido, ya sea sobre dos o cuatro ruedas. En una carrera no me achanto. Es extraño pero en cierto modo me gusta sentirme cercano al peligro. Posiblemente posea algún tipo de anhelo por la muerte. No lo sé.

Con Rainbow, al lado de Blackmore y Ronnie James Dio graba varios discos históricos, empezando por el Rising, siguiendo con el Long Live Rock'n Roll y en medio varios directos igualmente acojonantes.

RAINBOW - STARGAZER

De ésa época data también esta frikez de video que nos muestra otra faceta de Cozy...

PROGRAMA TV A FINALES DE LOS 70

Dio abandona Rainbow en 1978 para irse a BLACK SABBATH. En su lugar entra Graham Bonnet. A los teclados se incorpora Don Airey, compañero de Cozy en HAMMER. Así, Rainbow saca un disco más (Down to Earth) antes de que Powell empiece a colaborar con GARY MOORE.

Cozy: Creo que entonces me cargué el equipo de los JUDAS PRIEST. Estaba probando la pirotecnia, que quería que la vieran los del fondo también, y usamos gelignita. Destrozó la amplificación. Luego a Graham Bonnet se le olvidó la letra de Stargazer y de la mayoría de las demás canciones, prácticamente en su totalidad...

La primera colaboración, no obstante, dura menos que un suspiro... vamos, lo que tardan en preparar una aparición en el programa Old Grey Whistle Test de la BBC:

GARY MOORE & FRIENDS - BACK ON THE STREETS

Al parecer problemas con las discográficas de cada uno impiden que este proyecto salga adelante. Así que Cozy en 1980 monta su propio COZY POWELL AND FRIENDS y durante unos meses aparece en el mismo programa...

Ese mismo verano, SIMON PHILLIPS abandona MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP. Durante un tiempo Cozy toca con ellos y aunque no es un período que él recuerde con especial cariño, en el escenario no dejan de sonar BRUTALMENTE bien ...

MSG - ROCK BOTTOM

Para el segundo álbum de MSG se juntó una formación increíble (...) que, no obstante, tuvo problemas con el productor. He oído que Cozy estuvo muy molesto por el sonido de su batería.

Gary Barden [n.r. Solista vocal de MSG en esa época]: Cozy no estuvo a gusto en los Air Studios, él y Ron estuvieron tres semanas intentando conseguir el mejor sonido.

Su salida de MSG viene causada, según Powell, por los problemas de drogas que había en la formación. Según Barden, por la incompatibilidad de caracteres entre Cozy, los managers de MSG y el mismo Schenker. Y éste último se limita a comentarios monosilábicos en éste asunto. Así que todo indica que el buen rollito brilló por su ausencia...

Michael Schenker: Cozy tenía una personalidad muy fuerte.

Siguiente parada de este viaje: 1982 - WHITESNAKE. Otra vez gente ex-DEEP PURPLE (David Coverdale, Jon Lord), otra vez viejos compañeros (Neil Murray, bajista en C.P.'s HAMMER está allí) y... otra vez a cubrir la baja de un grande... esta vez se trata de Ian Paice... otro ex-DEEP PURPLE.

Y, para variar... más discos míticos, más conciertos históricos, más aguas turbulentas (a lo largo de los siguientes tres años entra y sale gente contínuamente) y... otra despedida agridulce. Bueno, más bien agria-a-secas.

WHITESNAKE - LOVE AIN'T NO STRANGER

Había oído que Whitesnake ha sido el único grupo para el cual no has tenido que hacer prueba.

Cozy Powell: Creo que tienes razón. Conocía a David Coverdale muy bien y el sabía lo que yo podía hacer, así que no se puso el problema de una prueba. Eso es cierto. Eramos amigos cercanos por entonces. Eramos buenos amigos y él simplemente me quiso en su grupo.

Cozy Powell una vez me contó que Whitesnake fue el único grupo para el cual no tuvo que hacer una prueba previa. ¿Es cierto? Y una vez colaboraste en un tema instrumental con él. ¿Cómo salió eso?

David Coverdale: Cozy y yo conectamos muy positivamente al principio. Sabíamos que iba a funcionar. Por desgracia, el respeto y la amistad no continuaron por distintas razones. Compuse mucho material para Cozy... Ha sido mi amigo.

Cozy Powell: Me fuí después de un problema económico, lo cual es bastante triste. Se me ofreció un trato firmado con un apretón de manos, y ese trato no se cumplió. Si se hubiera cumplido hubiera ganado un montón de pasta, ese álbum vendió aproximadamente 17 millones de copias

1985. Otra banda, mismo patrón. Carl Palmer, la "P" EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER, se larga para tocar a jornada completa en ASIA. ELP necesitan sustituto. Y allí está Cozy, pasando a llamarse la formación... EMERSON, LAKE & POWELL.
