On Wednesday Scott Bicycles announced that it is going to discontinue the sponsorship of the Scott-American Beef cycling team for the 2009 season.

Scott became title sponsor of the Saunier-Duval team, after the Spanish company withdrew from the world of pro cycling following the expulsion of Italian star Riccardo Riccò before Stage 12 of the Tour de France for doping offences.

Whether or not Scott is withdrawing as a direct cause of Riccò's actions, it is still a sad loss for the sport.

Then yesterday, Canadian bike maker Cervélo announced that it will own and sponsor a new European pro road team next season. Tentatively titled the Cervélo TestTeam, although the company may announce a title sponsor in the next few weeks.

According to some news reports, the company's future with Team CSC-Saxo Bank, which it has supplied since 2002, is uncertain.

The new team will seek a UCI Pro Continental registration and will be managed by Cycling United Racing, a Swiss group that manages Cervelo-Lifeforce.

The team also is sponsored by Zipp, Speedplay, Vittoria and 3T. Cervelo co-founder Gerard Vroomen said the team will serve as a product research & development arm for the companies.

Dopo il mercoledì da leone di Riccò, quello di ieri era senza dubbio il giorno in cui si attendevano risposte concrete dal 37enne ex Trullo Volante, Leonardo Piepoli. Atteso anch’esso a deporre, accompagnato dal proprio avvocato, Giuseppe Di Carlo, dinnanzi al procuratore antidoping del Coni, Ettore Torri.

Stesso luogo - lo stadio Olimpico di Roma - in cui, 24 ore prima, il suo ex compagno di squadra, Riccardo Riccò, aveva dichiarato di essersi dopato allo scorso Tour de France. Una verità incontrovertibile, limpida, con cui gettare la faccia in pasto al pubblico. 

Chi tuttavia sperava in una seconda eclatante mattinata di ammissioni si è presto scontrato con il silenzio e i «no», secchi, che il corridore pugliese ha spiattellato in faccia al procuratore Torri. «Sono stato interrogato solo come testimone - si è giustificato Piepoli, a margine di un interrogatorio durato circa quaranta minuti - ho detto quello che dovevo dire, niente di più, niente di meno». Troppo poco però da non accontentare affatto Ettore Torri, rimasto, anzi, decisamente deluso dalla scarsa vena collaborativa del pugliese: «Non ha detto nulla di importante relativamente all’istruttoria - ha lamentato Torri - Ha negato tutto». Sebbene poi lo stesso procuratore abbia precisato che il ciclista è stato sentito esclusivamente come «un testimone, non è indagato, non è positivo, l'abbiamo sentito come persona informata dei fatti». E prosegue la querelle.

Di certo c’è al momento la sospensione in via cautelare di Riccardo Riccò, convalidata ieri dal Tribunale nazionale antidoping. Ma restano le ombre su alcuni comportamenti che il team avrebbe tenuto alla Grande Boucle e che risulterebbero legati a doppio filo: il licenziamento di Piepoli e il doping di Riccò. Il corridore pugliese infatti è stato licenziato assieme a Riccò, non per una presunta positività, ma per «violazione del codice etico della squadra». E di questo Piepoli ha ammesso di averne parlato con il procuratore. Uno degli aspetti più controversi della vicenda questo allorché, poco dopo la positività di Riccò, il ciclista avrebbe anche ammesso sul pullman della Saunier-Duval: «Ho fatto lo stesso errore di Riccardo».

Due casi di doping accorsi all’interno di uno stesso team, per la legge equivalgono al doping di squadra. Un macigno, quindi, per la Saunier Duval che potrebbe aver fatto pressioni sul ciclista modenese per ottenere la sua confessione, ammettendo le proprie responsabilità, in modo da scongiurare una pesante sanzione per il team di Giannetti, non solo al Tour. In questo senso, le ammissioni di colpa del «furetto» emiliano assumerebbero decisamente il carattere del «sacrificio», oltre che una sincera presa di coscienza.

Solo ipotesi ovviamente, ma che lasciano intuire anche al più ingenuo degli appassionati in quali acque melmose ancora ristagni il ciclismo nostrano. Oltre ai fatti già noti, c’è la cronaca di ieri, che ha segnato altre due squalifiche a ciclisti professionisti, Paolo Bossoni e Giovanni Carini. Il primo è stato subito sospeso dalla sua squadra, la Lampre, a seguito della sua positività al doping, riscontrata al campionato italiano in linea dello scorso 29 giugno. La Lampre ha fatto sapere che il ciclista ancora non sa se chiedere le controanalisi. Casi questi che si vanno ad aggiungere a quelli ancor più dolenti di Riccò e Piepoli.

E poi l’azzurra Marta Bastianelli, già con le valigie per Pechino, disfatte a causa di una presunta dieta «galeotta». Dal Cio fanno sapere che ai prossimi giochi verranno messi in atto 4.500 test antidoping (il 25% in più rispetto ad Atene 2004), inclusi 1.300 controlli fuori competizione e 800 controlli sul sangue. Un campanello d’allarme per quanti intendano recarsi in Cina con l’intenzione di barare. «Il gatto sta aspettando che il topo esca dalla sua tana» ha affermato il direttore della sezione medica e scientifica del Cio, Patrick Schamasch. Speriamo che stavolta il topo non sia azzurro.

It has just been reported that 24-year-old cyclist Ricardo Riccò has admitted to having doped in preparation for the Tour de France. The rider tested positive for a new form of EPO - Continuous Erythropoietin Receptor Activator (CERA), following the 4th stage of the Tour.

According to Italian news agency ANSA, the former Saunier Duval rider made the admission at a hearing before the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) on Wednesday.

"Speaking to the anti-doping prosecutor, I took full responsibility for my actions,” Riccò told ANSA. “Prior to the Tour, I made a mistake; I took a product that everyone was talking about.” He said he made the decision to dope independently and took the drug outside of the auspices of his team.

I know Ricco is trying to show remorse for what he did, but it was still a stupid move. His actions could have resulted in his team mates losing their jobs. Thankfully US bicycle manufacturer, Scott-USA, stepped in to save the day as the team's new sponsor when Saunier Duval withdrew their sponsorship as a result of his actions.

Saunier Duvall, part of a German company specialising in domestic heaters and air conditioning units, has pulled out of cycling blaming the drug scandal that engulfed its team at the Tour de France. It acted after its Italian rider Riccardo Ricco failed a dope test on stage four, prompting the team to pull out of the race last week.

Both Ricco and his compatriot Leonardo Piepoli, who had won the prestigious Bastille Day stage but had not failed a dope test, were sacked last Friday.

A statement issued by Saunier Duval today confirmed: "This decision by the company was taken following the recent case of doping involving one of the team's cyclists, Riccardo Ricco, and the suspicions against another cyclist."

The news also represents a major blow for Spanish cycling, which will be left with just two Pro teams - Caisse d'Epargne and Euskaltel-Euskadi.

My only hope that this is the last team/sponsor to leave the sport because of the drug scandals. Another sad day indeed!

A CAT 3 precedes 2 HC climbs before meeting the dragon l'Alpe d'Huez. I have a feeling that we'll know who will win the yellow jersey in Paris after today. Team CSC has been a formidable force this year. Both Schleck brothers are in the top 20 GC to make their parents, and all of Luxembourg, proud. Christian Vandevelde and Big George Hincapie turned in good, yet disappointing performances, and Kim Kirchen hung in Stage 16.

An early start on the broadcast this morning found me still asleep, sorry! Got to bed late last night. But, here's where our boys on wheels are now:

The Cat 3 and the Giant of the Alps, Gallibier, the third highest climb of the Tour, are done. Hoschovd is slipping behind; Kirchen had mechanical trouble, but is catching up now. Before I left my house this morning, Paul Sherwin wasn't so sure that CSC's strategy was the best for today. I'm sorry to have missed any shots of Briancon; I used to spend some time there, during my university days.

There are more doping rumors circulating, this time about Christophe Moreau, who had mysteriously withdrawn, and even about Schumacher! But, those rumors have apparently been quashed.

Schumacher is visibly angry with the breakaway group, and apparently had some words with the Euskatel rider on the descent from Telegraphe hill. Cadel Evans isn't happy about the cameramen getting in his way.

The lead group, Schumacher, Velits and Ruben Perez have just gone through the feed zone. Their chase group is 1 min 7 secs behind, while the peloton is distanced by nearly 5:30 minutes.

Did you see Augustyn's spectacular drop off the side of the mountain yesterday? I wonder who went after his bike! Good to have seen Augustyn make his way, with a bit of spectator's help, back up to the road and walking about.

The lead group is approaches Croix de Fer - the Iron Cross (yikes), the second HC climb. Man, after Gallibier, I can't imagine how sore those collective legs must feel...and the worst is yet to come!

Just in: Saunier Duval are ceasing operations immediately, fallout following the Ricco and Piepoli doping scandal.

Bernhard Eisel crashes at a rond point, the second for Columbia riders today! Adam Hansel was the earlier rider who crashed. Di Gregorio, who looked so promising earlier in the day, has fallen behind after being dropped on the last descent, and is being paced by his FDJ team car; but, he still chases the lead two by 3 minutes.

Magnus Backstedt is in one of the studios feeding live reports and commented that Croix de Fer is the hardest climb in the Tour. Yeh, we knew that, Magnus - the guys out on the side of that mountain know that (now, if they didn't before). Tell us something new. Like: have you EVER finished a Tour de France?

The commentators are hoping Denis Menchov can pull off a stage win. We'll see - he hasn't had the best of luck going downhill! Schumi is in a foul mood, hehe.

Speaking of foul mood - I can't stand these coffee withdrawals I've been having since trying to go off the brew! So, I'm going to cave in and make some. Also - I'm going to start a second section of this report when our boys on wheels are about to wake the Dragon. Right now, they're about halfway up HC #2.

Velits hangs in with Schumi as Perez drops back by 1:25 minutes. Oscar Freire is behind the peloton, which is led by Cancellara. If you think the CSC pace hurts now, just wait! But, it's been a bit much for Stuart O'Grady, and he dropped off the back of their pack.

39 miles to the finish, with the sleeping dragon in between. Velits has left Schumi behind with less than 7k yet to climb to the summit. I wonder what Hincapie and Valverde are thinking about the peloton...

One commentator remarked that there are spectators packing the road from out of nowhere, lol! The stragglers, including Cadel Evans, Kohl, Vandevelde, are perking up.

Good luck to the Cav on his upcoming Olympic performance, what a ride he had in this year's Tour! Wishing the injured riders well and speedy recovery. As for those who continued to injure the sport - well, there's one outfit that believes in second chances. However, it remains to be seen who would still be worth offering that option.

Algunos 'listillos' están jodiendo al ciclismo desde hace años. Por una vez tiene razón el presidente de la UCI, Pat McQuaid, quien ha afirmado que el último 'pillado', el italiano Riccardo Riccò, es un "idiota". Tiene que serlo por necesidad. Los ciclistas cavan su propia fosa, aunque no se les pueda negar la presunción de inocencia. Pero llegará el día en que alguien tendrá que dar un puñetazo sobre la mesa. Algunos 'limpios' parecen encubrir a los tramposos. Ahora que parecía que las audiencias subían, otra vez lo mismo. Las cosas parecían arreglarse; las audiencias generan dinero no sólo para las televisiones, sino también para los equipos y los ciclistas.

Beltrán fue el primer positivo de este Tour hace algo más de una semana. Moisés Dueñas, al que le encontraron una farmacia en la maleta, siguió el nefasto camino del Triki. Luego vino la joya de la corona, Riccardo Riccò, comparado con el 'Pirata' Pantani, cuya lengua suelta le había granjeado muchas enemistades en el pelotón y con un futuro prometedor por delante. Riccò había ganado a lo grande dos etapas y dio positivo por EPO de tercera generación, una variante muy novedosa que quizá el corredor -o su equipo- estimaba aún indetectable por los laboratorios de la UCI. Chaval, te han pillao con el carrito del helao. Los que inventaron el EPO de tercera generación también contribuyeron en la investigación de su detección en los análisis antidoping. Quienes desarrollan este tipo de medicamentos quieren salvaguardar su imagen; ellos fabrican medicinas, no drogas, y quieren que su uso sea legal.

"Chico, tengo la solución a tus problemas: tómate esto que no da positivo e irás como una bala". Esta es una tentación recurrente en el mundo del ciclismo. Unos cogen la manzana del pecado porque les falta un poco para ganar. Otros, sencillamente porque carecen de personalidad. Otros, para tener un día de vino y rosas en su carrera. Otros, porque están cansados y prefieren tomar la vía rápida y fácil para mejorar su físico. Estos sinvergüenzas son pocos, pero perjudican al resto. Las reglas antidopaje de este deporte son las más duras, y quien no sea consciente de ello es un idiota. Primero, el ciclista cava su propia tumba; será un maldito para siempre. Segundo, contribuye a que el dedo acusador, con razón o sin ella, se pose sobre el equipo, de tal modo que el patrocinador se las pira, como ha sucedido con Barloworld y sucederá probablemente con Saunier Duval.

Todo esto puede acabar en un desastre, pero hay todavía algunos que no se dan cuenta de ello y siguen haciendo trampas, vendiendo su alma al diablo del dopaje. Hay que recuperar la esencia de este deporte, quizá el más duro que se haya inventado: compañerismo, sacrificio, entrega... En este sentido, es preferible una pájara como la de Valverde en Tourmalet y Hautacam que una exhibición como la de Riccò en Super-Besse o en Bagneres de Bigorre. Sin lugar a dudas. Ahora llegan los Alpes, dispuestos a dictar sentencia en un Tour en el que Evans, Menchov o Sastre parecen destinados a la gloria. Entretanto, la organización y los aficionados al deporte limpio rezamos para que el dopaje haya tocado fin. Al menos en esta edición, que ya es mucho pedir.

In the wake of Italian rider Riccardo Ricco's elimination from the tour after he tested positive for blood-boosting drug EPO, and the departure of the entire Saunier Duval-Scott team, what would YOU advise the Tour Chief Christian Prudhomme if you were his Director of Public Affairs?

Here's what you know:

Riccardo recently came second in the Giro d'Italia, won two of three mountain stages in the Tour, was ninth overall in the standings and wearing the  polka dot  (king of the mountains) and white (best young rider) jerseys when he was unceremoniously escorted away for questioning by French gendarmes.

Use of illicit drugs on the Tour de France is a felony and if charged, he could face up to two years in prison and a $6,000 (US) fine. For now, he's been kicked off Saunier Duval and banned from racing for two years. His team pulled out of the event as well, amid suspicions of organized doping, which the team denies.

The Italian media have condemmed Ricco.

The biggest risk for the tour is potential loss of sponsors. Spectators generally watch this sport for free. Tour organizers depend on sponsor dollars to cover much of the cost. Five sponsors have withdrawn in the last two years. Barloworld just announced they will pull out at the end of the Tour. Will there be more?

Two American companies, Garmin and Columbia, joined just before the tour and have adopted rigorous internal drug testing procedures that exceed the requirements, as has CSC. If more teams adopt clear and concise anti-doping measures, that will help reduce the potential risk for sponsors.

 What would you advise Tour Chief Christian Prudhomme?  In fact he's come out of this quite well. He continues to focus on the race. Some are calling him the Saint of Cycling, doing his best to run a clean race and clean up the sport. He had fairly aggressive words for the Saunier Duval team, and rightly so. The tests used on the Tour to detect a brand new third generation drug hadn't been used on the Giro d'Italia. This may actually force the IOC to use this test in Beijing. Good on them.

The real issue here is Saunier Duval. They issued an Official Statement and News Release following the incident.  These are the english translations, and some things may have been lost in the translation. However, here's some of what they said, 

"We are the victims of the deceitful behaviour of those who put our sponsors' investments and the jobs of so many honest people at risk with the loathesome  purpose of improving their cycling performance." 

"Saunier Duval-Scott have decided to withdraw in order to preserve the postive image of the team's sponsors and the Tour de France itself."

That's a first step.  In addition however, they could have apologized to their sponsors, to the Tour organizers, to the spectators, and to all the riders who are clean. It takes a tremendous number of people behind the scenes to support a team, and those people deserve some acknowledgement and thanks. They could have said what steps they had taken to try to prevent this (they were quite vague on this point), and what they are going to do to get to the bottom of it, and resolve the situation.

In effect, their effort seemed half-hearted and insincere. They have a ways to go. They owe it to their sponsors and to the future of the sport to do so. Do you agree?

Ha vuelto el Tour. Ha vuelto el dopaje. 3 casos esta semana han vuelto a empañar uno de los deportes más bellos de ver (en etapas de crono y montaña) como es el ciclismo. Y lo peor es que dos de los casos son españoles: Triki Beltrán y Moisés Dueñas. El tercero era el más importante a la hora de la clasificación general. El italiano Ricardo Riccò, vencedor de dos etapas de montaña del Tour, dio positivo por EPO, y su equipo, Saunier Duval, ha decidido abandonar la ronda gala, llevándose por delante a otros dos ciclistas, el español Juanjo Cobo y el italiano Leonardo Piepoli, que dieron una exhibición en Hautacam, y que no tienen, a priori, culpa alguna de que su compañero haya hecho lo que hizo. Con los positivos de Beltrán y Dueñas, el ciclismo español vuelve a quedar empañado, cuando está en un gran momento. Los dos últimos vencedores del Tour fueron españoles, gracias en parte a que la organización “piyó” a Floyd Landis (2006) y Michael Rasmussen (2007), que utilizaron la técnica de las “trampas” para tratar de vencer.

Y este año teníamos grandes esperanzas puestas en Alejandro Valverde, que todavía puede “resucitar” en un buen día de montaña, y en Carlos Sastre, que siempre está ahí desde el Tour de 2006. Y la respuesta de la UCI, del Tour y de la prensa francesa a estos éxitos es que el dopaje va en la sangre española, ocultando el miedo que tienen a que un país monopolice la mejor carrera ciclista del mundo. A falta de pruebas, buenos son los rumores. Pero esto no es nuevo en Francia; cuando el siete veces campeón del Tour, Lance Armstrong, estaba en activo, las dudas sobre la capacidad ganadora de un ciclista iban hacia él, siendo siempre infundadas, nunca con pruebas reales. Ahora los positivos de Beltrán y Dueñas, como digo, empañarán todo lo que hagan, o han hecho como en el caso de Contador, vencedor del Giro de este año, los españoles. Pero hay una duda aún mayor; ¿por qué los equipos, normalmente, se desentienden de sus ciclistas? Algo tendrá que decir el médico del equipo, ¿no? ¿O ya nadie recuerda el “caso Festina” de hace 10 años?

Los fracasos deportivos de un país se suelen tapar, como todo en la vida, echando la culpa a otros, y Francia de eso sabe mucho, ya que el último francés que ganó su competición fue Bernard Hinault, en el 85. Aunque también es cierto que los campeones de los últimos años están bajo la sombra del EPO y otras sustancias. Bjarne Riis (96), Jan Ullrich (97), el fallecido Marco Pantani (98 ) y los ya mencionados Landis y Rasmussen, que fueron atrapados a tiempo (el Tour de Landis fue adjudicado a Pereiro un año más tarde), son quienes ensombrecen los triunfos legales de los demás.

Pero no hay que dejarse llevar. Tenemos que creer en un ciclismo limpio, donde los españoles somos de los mejores, siempre dando guerra, y tenemos que apoyar a los nuestros, puesto que, hasta que no se demuestre lo contrario, ninguno de ellos se toma la legalidad por su mano. Ni se toma otras cosas, claro. Son muchos palos en la historia de este deporte: Heras, Vinokourov, Basso… son otros casos de campeones dopados, y es entendible la postura de quien cree que algo tienen que hacer para soportar tantos kilómetros. Pero ese no debe ser nunca un motivo para no creer en los demás, en Evans, en Contador, en Sastre, en Menchov… todos ellos cuentan y nos ofrecen bellos espectáculos. No nos dejemos llevar por tres casos (y los que queden, que esperemos sean muy pocos o ninguno) y sigamos confiando en todos y cada uno de los ciclistas que nos quitan (o nos dan) la siesta en verano. ¿La solución? Médicos profesionales de la UCI en todos los equipos sería una de ellas, aunque la gente es corrompible siempre. Pero algo hay que hacer para que el ciclismo no se acabe por culpa de las drogas.

La delusione prevale sulla rabbia. Lo scandalo piombato addosso a Riccardo Riccò è stato come lo svegliarsi da un bel sogno. Per noi che avevamo acclamato le gesta del furetto modenese e per chi, come i cugini francesi, non aveva perso tempo a esaltarne le doti. Ieri mattina invece il turn-back della stampa d’oltralpe sul suo conto. Le Figaro titolava «L’errore di un fanfarone», mentre un’editoriale di Liberation recita testuale: «Questo nuovo talento aveva soltanto un nuovo modo di imbrogliare». Una notte passata nella gendarmeria di Pamiers.

Non ancora varcata la soglia del tribunale di Foix, dove lo attendeva il procuratore Antoine Leroy per un nuovo interrogatorio, Riccardo Riccò poteva già considerarsi un ex corridore della Saunier Duval, la squadra con cui aveva partecipato alle prime undici tappe di questo Tour. Licenziato per violazione del codice etico. «Abbiamo sempre sorvegliato i nostri atleti con il massimo scrupolo possibile - ha spiegato il team manager Mauro Gianetti - Malgrado tutti gli sforzi compiuti, non siamo riusciti ad evitare questa assurda situazione e oggi, come squadra, ci sentiamo vittime dell'irresponsabilità di coloro che hanno la criminale smania di primeggiare».

Sorpreso? «No, era il minimo che potessero fare». Per lo stesso motivo ha perso il posto anche Piepoli e ora il rischio per il team è la perdita della sponsorizzazione. Il direttore generale della Saunier Duval, Thierry Leroy, infatti ha avanzato la possibilità di chiedere i danni ai dirigenti della squadra, «qualora venisse accertato un caso di doping organizzato». Certo delle sue ragioni, nel pomeriggio Riccò ha invece sbattuto in faccia alla cronaca la sua verità: «Sono innocente». Il corridore modenese avrebbe confermato al procuratore di non avere mai usato Epo e di non sapere spiegare le cause della sua positività. Non importa che fuori ci sia il finimondo e tutti parlino di lui come un «truffatore». Il pm parla di «diverse apparecchiature mediche, siringhe, flebo, trovate dentro la sua camera», anche se non sembrano essere state utilizzate.

A destare l’interesse degli inquirenti francesi, poi, altre borse trovate vuote nella stessa stanza. Materiale «usato regolarmente sotto prescrizione medica e per ragioni di salute», replica Riccò, dal cappuccio nero della sua felpa. Una volta rilasciato e sbattuto dentro l’auto a forza, il corridore ha ribadito: «Non mi sono dopato. Voglio solo tornare in Italia per fare le controanalisi». Ai microfoni della Rai che lo hanno poi raggiunto al casello dell’autostrada, poco fuori Foix, ha spiegato: «Nella mia borsa sono state trovate solo vitamine. Tornerò più forte di prima e sentirete presto parlare di me». Passato al professionismo dal 2006, proprio con il team di Gianetti, Riccardo Riccò era stato spesso paragonato a Pantani per le sue doti da scalatore. Facile quindi l’equazione per quanti ora paragonano i due, non solo per le virtù ma anche per i vizi.

In difesa della memoria di Pantani, la famiglia ha espressamente chiesto di non « minare l'onore, la reputazione e soprattutto la memoria» del Pirata. Deluso anche Damiano Cunego che forse aveva visto nel modenese un alleato importante nel rilanciare il ciclismo italiano, quello pulito: «La positività al doping di Riccò conferma che il ciclismo è sempre allo stesso punto - lo sfogo del corridore della Lampre - Si annuncia di aver intrapreso la strada giusta per risollevarsi, ma evidentemente non è così». Riccò ora rischia fino a due anni di reclusione e 3.750 euro di ammenda, oltre a due anni di squalifica a livello sportivo. E una carriera ormai compromessa.

Because I left the office early to take my hubby to lunch in celebration of his birthday, I got a chance to catch a televised re-broadcast of today's Stage 13. It was, as described earlier, fairly uneventful until the final sprint through the city of Nimes. Rounding a left turn, a Gerolsteiner rider (if I'm not mistaking the jersey) managed to slice his bike in half when he got caught in the wrong spot over the turn post in the road - that cement traffic control structure with a metal post in the middle). The cyclist took a nasty fall, but was up and walking. His bike is toast, but he, fortunately, looked okay. I'm searching for a video that is actually available in my zone - aaaarghhh!

The title sponsor announced they will drop sponsorship of Saunier Duval.

Alweer een idioot!

Voor het derde achtereenvolgende jaar wordt de ziel uit de Tour de France geblazen. ‘Het verhaal’ van de Ronde van Frankrijk 2008 wordt wreed (en onnatuurlijk?) herschreven. Ricardo Ricco ‘de Cobra’ en Saunier Duval verlaten onder ‘BOE’-geroep de Tour, na Beltran en Duenas die al eerder gepakt werden. Ricco gaf kleur aan deze ronde, maar snoepte van het nieuwe ‘wondermiddel’ van het peloton: CERA, een derde generatie EPO-vorm, die geen sporen in de urine zou moeten achterlaten (Telegraaf). EPO is een hormoon en zorgt voor een beter transport van zuur- en koolstof door het bloed. Ons aller Tukker Bram Tankink had zoals gewoonlijk een mooie quote als reactie: “Als ik hem zou tegenkomen, sloeg ik hem op zijn muil, het is een etter.” Het ontdekken van doping-zondaars, lang na het uitvoeren van de eigenlijke misstanden doet niet zoveel pijn. We accepteren dat een Riis of een Ullrich volgepompt rondreed met zo ongeveer een halve apotheek achter de kiezen. Ons eigen Joop (Z.) of een kannibaal als Indurain waren al geen haar beter, zei Mart Smeets tijdens Studio Sportzomer. Het verhaal van voorbije edities van ‘le Tour’ is geschreven en we malen er niet meer zo om als zaken niet zo waren als ze leken te zijn. De herinnering blijft, om een bekend Nederlands chanson te mimieken. Maar door tijdens de ronde renners uit de koers te nemen, wordt het lopende verhaal van deze editie om zeep geholpen. Piepoli en Ricco van Saunier Duval heersten in de bergetappes tot nu toe. Ikzelf wordt meestal pas gegrepen door de Tour na enkele van deze bergetappes. In de bergen krijgt de Tour langzaam kleur, dienen kanshebbers zich aan en worden de onderlinge krachtsverhoudingen zichtbaar. Ondanks een misschien bloedstollende ontknoping, vrees ik dat de Tour dit jaar geen vat meer op me zal krijgen.

Tour de France, recente historie:

Vorig jaar werd Michael Rasmussen door de Rabo-ploeg, onder druk van Tour-directie en sponsor Rabobank uit de koers genomen, met het geel stevig om de schouders. Weg ‘verhaal van de Tour’. Ineens is Contador kampioen en barst het geharrewar en getouwtrek over vakantiebestemmingen en trainingsstages op onduidelijke locaties. In 2006 werd Ullrich tijdens de Tour ontslagen en 4 dagen na de Tour bleek dat winnaar Landis doping had gebruikt. Ineens is Pereiro Sio kampioen. Astana en Vinokoerov verdwijnen, net zoals Basso en Beloki. Maar het beeld klopt niet. Begrijp me niet verkeerd, ik ben niet tegen het EPO-offensief door de Tour-directie en het uit koers nemen van renners die doping gebruiken. Ik heb vertrouwen in het feit, dat men onregelmatigheden in het lichaam en bloed kan constateren en dat een groot percentage zondaars door de nauwkeurigheid en frequentie van het testen tegen de lamp zal lopen. Die indruk leeft ook wel onder de gemiddelde wielrenner. Nogmaals Tankink: “Volgens mij kun je hier in Frankrijk vijf jaar cel krijgen voor doping. En je krijgt ook nog eens een boete van 100.000 euro en verliest een jaarsalaris. Terwijl je weet dat er zo goed op wordt gecontroleerd. Ze hebben al je bloedgegevens en hoeven maar te vergelijken” (Spits).

Grijze vlakken

Ik ben echter niet overtuigd van een altijd juiste interpretatie van testgegevens of testomstandigheden (waarden van aangetoonde stoffen en interpretaties over oorzaken). Jongens als Landis procederen voor meer dan een miljoen dollar in slepende kwesties en willen ons doen geloven dat er meer verklaringen zijn voor hoge waarden in het bloed. Ik geloof dat er nog een hoop onbekende factoren invloed hebben op gemeten waarden en dat er te weinig bekend is over het aanmaken van lichaamseigen stoffen. Toch kunnen we ook constateren, dat bijna elke actieve renner die ‘gepakt heeft’ hardnekkig blijft ontkennen ooit van een verboden goedje gesnoept te hebben. Doorgaans met de maniakale volharding van een eerlijk man. Ik zal op deze site nog eens een artikel wijden aan doping-vormen en lichaamseigen dope. Ik zou het heel wrang vinden als in de toekomst zou blijken, dat een man als Lance Armstrong zijn prestaties niet helemaal alleen zou hebben behaald (een beetje van jezelf, een beetje van EPO). Toch zou de heroïsche herinnering aan de onverzettelijke Texaan bij mij niet minder mooi worden. Je zag hem toch zorgvuldig plannen en wegrijden van iedereen! Beelden draai je niet terug. En je ziet aan de buitenkant niet of een renner gebruikt heeft.

Een nieuwe Tour?

Misschien is de beste oplossing wel het afspreken dat we het verleden het verleden laten en elke renner in de volgende editie van de Tour zijn eigen illegale mengseltje laten samenstellen. Alles mag. En dan moeten ze of aan het begin precies vertellen wat ze waar en wanneer gaan nemen, zodat we de werking van de middelen kunnen vergelijken (wetenschappelijk experiment). Of ze vertellen niets en we sluiten thuis op de bank weddenschapjes af met buren of per SMS (“Kijk Mam, hij is paars, die rennert! Dat moet een combinatie van coke en amfetametanine-sultraat zijn, SMS ‘B’ naar 4040.”). Alle gekheid op een stokje: de Tour moet natuurlijk de overtreders tegen de sport weren. Commercie en een verhoogde druk op de hedendaagse atleet zijn geen excuus voor het zondigen tegen het verloop van een natuurlijke en eerlijke competitie. En dat is de grootste gemene deler van het peleton wel eens met Bram uit Tukkerland. Hopelijk lukt het de organisatie de editie van 2009 schoon te houden. Ik vrees dat dit jaar voor mij de lol er vanaf is. Tenzij Denis Mentsjov besluit de rest van het peloton zijn hielen te laten zien. Of Tankink nog eens tijdens een interview gewaarschuwd moet worden dat het peloton al vertrokken is (“Echt waar joh?”). Tankink lees je trouwens in de Twentsche Courant Tubantia.

No, non finisce un sogno, non è l'ennesimo giorno di delusione, non è la solita tranvata che ci cade inattesa nei sensi.
E non è neanche un giorno da resa dei conti, un giorno da cui ripartire in qualche modo e verso un mondo migliore e mondato dalla feccia che lo infesta.
È un giorno come un altro, alla fine del quale, diradatosi il clamore mediatico e sciacallo dei cani da scoop, tutto riprenderà ad andare nel solito modo, fino al prossimo caso da prima pagina. Da qui al prossimo caso, la sinusoide di migliaia di appassionati sarà: sono disgustato, basta ciclismo, mi dedico alle bocce, però però il Giro, però però la Sanremo, quasi quasi mi guardo il Mondiale, ma guarda questo ragazzino, pare fortissimo, è fortissimo, vince, vincerà, dominerà il Tour, lo adoro, mi fa impazzire, mi ha fatto tornare ad amare il ciclismo, l'hanno beccato positivo, oddio che stronzo, che traditore, mi fidavo tanto di lui, non seguirò più il ciclismo, sono disgustato, basta ciclismo, mi dedico alle bocce.
Quanto ci metterà a compiersi il nuovo ciclo? 10 anni (il tempo DP, Dopo Pantani), o solo 3 (il tempo DB, Dopo Basso)?
Poi ci sono quelli affranti, quelli che non ne possono più dopo l'ennesimo colpo basso, quelli che sbandano e non sanno dove andare, riempiti fin sopra i capelli da tutta l'amarezza del mondo.
E poi ci sono quelli dispiaciuti umanamente per Riccardo, perché scendere in corsa dal carro dell'ex vincitore è il gioco più facile della storia (d'Italia), ma salire al volo su quello del perdente è un segno di grande civiltà.

Bene, Riccò trovato positivo. La storia si ripete, e quel che più sconvolge è vedere come tutto il classico balletto riprende come se già non avessimo vissuto queste situazioni decine di volte. Pari pari. Il ragazzo osannato di poche ore prima diventa di colpo il reietto, la gara è a chi lo infanga nella maniera più violenta, e quelli che già lo odiavano, zittiti finora dai suoi risultati, possono finalmente dare libero sfogo alla meschinità (sentimento base della natura umana).

Usiamo la testa, per una volta. Capisco che parlando di Riccò, personaggio che smuove e scuote l'anima, è difficile essere razionali. Ma è obbligatorio, perché la razionalità è la prima arma contro le cazzate.
Dicono che ora si spiega com'è che Riccò andasse così forte. Certo, Riccò, i suoi risultati, la sua forza, sono tutti frutto del doping.
Chiudo gli occhi e ho un dejavù, l'ennesimo di questa giornata. Riccardo portato via dai gendarmi, Riccardo nell'occhio del ciclone, Riccardo esposto alla pubblica vergogna, anzi proprio messo alla gogna.
Chiudo gli occhi e rivedo Marco Pantani.
Chiudo gli occhi e rivedo me stesso, le mie reazioni il 5 giugno del 1999 e nei mesi successivi, il mio allontanarmi dal ciclismo che mi aveva tradito nel suo idolo più colossale.
Chiudo gli occhi e so che non rifarò quello stesso errore, perché sarebbe proprio la risposta più sbagliata.
Non lascerò che Riccardo venga sommerso dall'ipocrisia assassina, quella che ha ucciso Marco, non lascerò solo Riccardo. Non farò come quelli che lo hanno incensato perché portava al movimento ascolti, spettacolo, interesse, soldi, e ora lo scaricano come un sacco d'immondizia. Non sarò debole come fui allora, non mi lascerò schiacciare dalla sfiducia, dalla delusione, dalla disillusione.

Non sono affranto oggi, non sono disperato, non sto sbandando, non sono alla canna del gas come fui due anni fa, non piango. Sono tranquillo. Che cosa è successo di diverso da quanto già sapevo? Niente. Sapevo che l'Epo è pane quotidiano, quindi mi aspettavo - tra le varie eventualità che si mettono in conto - che avvenisse quello che è successo. E mi aspettavo che potesse capitare anche al corridore che amo di più. È successo, pazienza. Sì, dispiace non vedere Riccardo sulle Alpi, dispiace pensare che starà 2 anni fuori, dispiace sapere che è stato arrestato per colpa di quell'assurdo che è il doping reato penale.
Mi dispiace, ma non riesco a essere disperato. Nervi saldi. Riccardo ha bisogno di me, ora, di me e di tutti quelli che non seguono la facile onda della facile indignazione, di tutti quelli che non hanno mai creduto alle favole, o peggio, di quelli che hanno finto di credere alle favole.

Già me li immagino i Bulbarelli, già me li immagino continuare a fare quello che fanno da 10 anni, ovvero dire che il ciclismo pulito non solo è possibile, ma è anche una realtà talmente vicina a noi che sarebbe reificabile con pochi altri sforzi.
Da dieci anni facciamo sforzi. Pochi altri sforzi, uno dietro l'altro, uno alla settimana, sassetto sopra sassetto, per costruire il muro che terrà al di là il doping e chi si dopa. Ma il doping è volatile, e quindi vola, vola sopra il muro di sassetti e dilaga comunque, sempre, ovunque. Dire che il ciclismo è "quasi" pulito, dire che manca poco, dire che coi nuovi controlli tutto viene scoperto è professare falso ideologico. È mentire al proprio pubblico, ai propri lettori, prenderli in giro, vendere false storie, vendere fumo.
Da dieci anni facciamo sforzi e sentiamo il direttore del Tour e il direttore del Giro che questo sarà il Tour o il Giro più pulito della storia, e invece ogni anno siamo al punto di partenza. Colpa delle mele marce, dicono, ma diosanto, foss'anche per una mera questione di occorrenze, possibile che questa balla attecchisca ancora tanto tra la gente?
Beltrán, Dueñas, Riccò, si dice Moreau. Abbiamo il vecchio quasi ex-ciclista e il nuovo promettente, abbiamo il campioncino e il campione mancato; abbiamo gli spagnoli (iberica terra di perdizione!), ma anche gli italiani (terra di Torri!), ma anche i francesi (terra di leggi durissime contro il doping!), la casistica insomma è completa. Mele marce?

Ora chi non sa niente di ciclismo si sentirà snobisticamente in dovere di dire la sua, di spiegarci i mali di questo sport (e di questi giovani che lo praticano aprendo il loro cuore e le loro vene alla droga e alla tossicodipendenza), e pazienza, ci sorbiremo i tuttologi, i micheleserra che perdono ogni occasione per tacere, pazienza, ragazzi, noi siamo sopravvissuti a Campiglio e Strasburgo, possiamo benissimo sopravvivere a Lavelanet.
DOBBIAMO sopravvivere a Lavelanet. Io il ciclismo in mano a sciacalli e falsi moralisti (o veri moralisti, ma in quel caso rimbambiti da una sesquipedale ingenuità) non lo lascio più.
Non lo lascio più il ciclismo in mano a quelli del ciclismo, in mano a queste amebe senza palle, a questi smidollati che parlano di tragedia, di dramma sportivo, che non ci vogliono credere, che cascano dalle nuvole, che mettono in piedi il solito teatrino, Gianetti che ritira la squadra, EpoGianetti dico, e l'altro giorno quell'altro, Volpi, disperato per Dueñas, ma fatemi il piacere, fatemi il santo piacere.
Io Riccardo Riccò lo difenderò fino alla fine. E lo so che saremo sempre di meno, lo so che la gente scappa, e che qualcuno si sentirà offeso da queste righe, ma si va avanti con chi c'è, con chi ci crede, con chi non smarrisce il senso della vita se beccano un corridore positivo, perché tanto lo sappiamo che succede, è successo e succederà. Riccò lo difendo e lo aspetto, se vorrà tornare a correre, così come sto aspettando Basso e Vinokourov. Tutti corridori beccati, in un modo o nell'altro, tutti corridori dopati, in un modo o nell'altro: e so bene che la differenza tra un dopato e un corridore pulito (tutti quelli del gruppo, per dire) è che il dopato ha avuto la sfiga (o l'insipienza) di farsi beccare.

Paparino, quella che chiamavi "la mia bambina" ha perso la verginità da un sacco di tempo. E anzi, se proprio devo dirtela tutta, è anche abbastanza zoccola. Ma so che lo sai, anche se proprio non riesci a dirtelo. E invece è proprio così, libera il tuo sguardo dai veli piccoloborghesi con cui sei cresciuto, e guarda le cose in faccia, e chiama le cose col loro nome, per una volta nella vita, per una santa necessaria volta nella vita, non cedere all'ipocrisia.
E poi dimmi paparino, hai il coraggio di disconoscere questa tua figlia così zoccola? La disconosci? È tua figlia.

The riders are at around 53k into the race and approaching their first climb of the day, a Cat 4 at Resclauze.

Two riders, Florent Brard (Cofidis) and Niki Terptsra (Milram) lead the peloton by 6.52 minutes; the peloton doesn't seem very anxious to chase them down, just yet. They're about to descend Resclauze.

What say we look to Cavendish for another spectacular sprint today?

Sebastien Lang, wearing the polka dot jersey, took the final point over the summit and the peloton is slightly over 7 mins behind. Anyone want to tell the guys out front that the peloton is happy to let them wear themselves out?

Seriously, folks, the most excitement among the Tour bloggers this morning is the celebrity look-alike "contest" - Cadel Evan's spooky grin makes him look like Jim Carey's Grinch; Andy Schleck looks like...well, Frank Schleck; Patani resembles Dumbo. The list is growing and rather hysterical. I'll save you the pain, though.

By now, the riders have conquered their second Cat 4 of the day and enjoying a nice, easy descent to the flats with about 69k to go. Correction: 65k

The Cav-man is on a roll, literally! I cannot believe he actually outpaced Robbie McEwen, the one who has been known to rocket out of nowhere. We are really seeing a changing of the guard in this Tour. woo-hoo!

I'll be back sometime tomorrow (have a short 3-mile group run to kickoff a new training season). The boys on wheels will be back tomorrow as they head into the Alps. Two Cat 4 climbs on the second half of the route, the last being within the final 10k, should provide another shakeout in the GC and see the sprinters begin to drop off.

La cobra se envenenó. El italiano Riccardo Riccò, del equipo Saunier Duval, dio positivo en un control de la sustancia prohíbida EPO (eritropoyetina), según informó la Agencia Francesa Antidopaje (AFLD por sus siglas en francés).

Riccò, subcampeón del Giro d'Italia y apodado "la cobra" en su país, se había convertido en la sensación del Tour de Francia al ganar dos etapas de montaña y figuraba noveno en la tabla general a 2.29" del líder Cadel Evans.

Es el tercer caso de dopaje en la edición 2008 de la vuelta francesa tras el positivo, también con EPO, de los españoles Manuel Beltrán y Moisés Dueñas.

El equipo del ciclista italiano, el Saunier Duval, se retiró de la prueba luego del anuncio de Pierre Bordry, presidente de la Agencia Francesa Antidopaje.

El ciclista dio positivo a un control que se le realizó luego de concluída la cuarta etapa de la prueba, la contrareloj individual en Cholet, en la que terminó 115 a 3.36" del vencedor.

En esa misma etapa dio positivo el español Moisés Dueñas Nevado, del equipo anglo-italiano Barloworld, quien había sido excluído de la carrera el miércoles.

Het is, net als vorig jaar, weer van dat: doping heerst. Na Beltran en nog een andere, onbekende, Spaanse coureur, is Riccardo Ricco op epo betrapt. Eerst en vooral: wat bezielt die idioten toch? Op geen enkel spul zijn zo'n sterke controles als op epo. Het is makkelijk zat om het op te sporen. Niemand wordt zo gecontroleerd als goeie renners. En toch pakken ze. Om net dat íetsje beter te zijn. Of om gewoon niet slecht meer te zijn.

Want wie had voor januari 2008 van Riccardo Ricco gehoord? U? Nee, natuurlijk niet. De jongen reed niet goed. Hij was helemaal gene superklimmer. En plots wordt hij 'Il Cobra'. Il Cobra die in de Tour de France alles en iedereen op een hoopje rijdt in de pyreneeën, en dat waarschijnlijk nog eens zou doen in de Alpen. Hij vergeleek zichzelf met Pantani, hij was eventjes de held van Italië. en nu blijkt dat hij 'pakt'. Eruit stappen is niet voldoende. (Zou SD dit hebben gedaan om te vermijden dat Piepoli ook wordt gepakt, en ook hij zijn zege - en dus het geld - verliest?) Dit soort mensen zou men al zijn zeges uit heel de carrière moeten afnemen. In feite, is heel de ronde nu 'verkeerd' gereden. Elkeen die seconden pakte door in zijn wiel te springen, kunnen die seconden in vraag worden gesteld: wat was er gebeurd als hij niet had aangevallen? Elkeen die de klop kreeg door hem te zien voorbijvlammen kan worden de vraag gesteld: wat als hij niet was voorbij gevlamd?

Nouja, om op het onderwerp terug te keren, vind je ook niet dat dit verdacht veel weg heeft van de Festina-affaire, in 1998 (toen pantani, het grote voorbeeld van ricco, trouwens won)? Een onbeduidend ploegje als Festina, wordt plots een superteam, en fietst zich voortdurend in de kijker. Tot ze hangen wegens doping. Ik vraag me af of Ricco de enige gebruiker is binnen Duval. Cobo, Piepoli en co waren plots ook verrassend sterk.

Nuja, wie ben ik om verdenkingen te maken? Laat ons het er gewoon bij houden, dat deze daden mij wel ontgoochelen, en zwaar bestraft dienen te worden - in tegenstelling tot bijv. Tom Boonen die -prestatieremmend- spul gebruikte buiten de koers.

Tiens ? Riccardo Ricco, dit "le Cobra", le coureur italien aux dents longues et à la langue bien pendue de la Saunier Duval a été contrôlé positif à l'EPO ! C'est tout bonnement renversant ! Pour un peu, on aurait envie de hurler "je vous l'avais dit !" Récapitulons: l'équipe Saunier Duval, lauréate de trois étapes (Ricco deux fois et Piepoli) et comptant le huitième et le neuvième du classement général dans ses rangs (Cobo et Ricco), donc en gros la principale animatrice du Tour a fait ses valises aujourd'hui. Franchement. Sincèrement. Sans rire. Est-ce que cela étonne quelqu'un ?

Ah oui, bien sûr, les autres coureurs. Il sont bouleversés les pauvres. Ils n'ont pas l'habitude des affaires de dopage dans le peloton. Certains vont même jusqu'à dire que les tricheurs qui se font pincer devraient être suspendus à vie. Espérons pour ceux-là qu'ils ne se feront pas pincer à leur tour, car leur discours risquerait de changer.

Bon, le plus rigolo, c'est de voir que Moises Duenas, obscur coureur espagnol 82e du contre-la-montre de Cholet a été contrôlé positif. Etait-il mauvais à tel point que même en trichant il n'a pas réussi à terminer parmi les meilleurs, ou bien les 81 premiers étaient-ils aussi chargés que lui ?

Bref, c'est bien de contrôler le taux d'hématocrite, mais ne faudrait-il pas aussi contrôler le taux d'hypocrisie dans le sang ?

Earlier today the news broke that yet another cyclist has tested positive in this year's Tour De France.  Ricardo Ricco was led away by French police and his team, Saunier-Duval, withdrew from the Tour immediately after the announcement that it's 24-year-old team leader had tested positive.  Ricco had won two stages of this year's tour, including an impressive performance in the mountains where he destroyed the competition just a day after his performance had been questioned.

Fair or not, this whole situation brings back memories of Floyd Landis in the 2006 tour.  Landis, who had been among the cyclists thought to have been in contention for GC title hopes, had a couple of horrible days and then had an amazing ride in the mountains to close the gap and take over the yellow jersey.  Ricco's leap wasn't quite at that level, but anyone who saw him accelerating over those hills a few days ago will understand the similarities between the two.

As an avid cycling fan who has watched every stage of this year's tour live every morning (it's great not having a job yet!), I can say that I have very mixed reactions to this latest positive test.  

On the one hand, I'm angry that these cyclists continue to dope and continue to dirty the reputation of cycling.  The doping stories are the only stories that make the national news.  A casual cycling fan or someone whose only knowledge of the race comes from Sportscenter will not know about the other great stories in this year's race such as the successes of Team Columbia and Team Garmin-Chipotle or the speed demon, Mark Cavendish's three stage wins.  Sadly, all these fans will hear of is the selfish acts of the "athletes" who comprise the lowest-common denominator in professional sports.  

Unlike the doping stories that have clouded over baseball or other more popular sports in years past, many American sports fans are simply too unfamiliar with cycling to have any perspective on the sport.  For example, where a baseball player gets caught doping, many fans are familiar with enough players to look to those as examples of clean players and can simply write off the cheater as a one-off in their minds.  With cycling, on the other hand, many people have no idea about the majority of riders, so it's easier to lump everyone in with a cheater, especially given the sport's history in recent years.  It's a sad truth, but until cycling proves otherwise, this reputation will persist even if it is undeserved.

On the other hand though, I'm glad to see that cheaters are getting caught.  It's impossible to say whether or not everyone that is cheating is getting caught, but the simple fact that there are positive doping tests coming back shows that the Tour is making an effort.  Additionally, the new French law which makes it a crime to bring drugs such as EPO into the country will hopefully result in the criminal prosecution of some of these riders.  This may seem a bit extreme to some, but obviously the threat of a two-year ban isn't enough to stop the cheating.  Hopefully, this additional component will force some riders to think twice about cheating.

Overall, I don't think Ricco's positive test will hurt the Tour or the sport--quite frankly the tour has nowhere to go but up after the events in recent years.  The reaction by race officials and French authorities has been strong and swift.  I'd like to think that nobody else will get caught doping this year, but I feel that such hopes are simply that: hopes...I think another positive test or two is inevitable.  My only hope is that for the sake of the race that one of the leaders doesn't test positive again this year (see, e.g. 2006 and 2007).

Keep Riding (Cleanly)

Auch die 95. Tour de France ist nicht sauber, nicht frei von überführten Dopingsündern und der Frage, wie hoch die Dunkelziffer der tatsächlich gedopten Fahrer ist. Bei vielen Leistungen der Fahrer schwingt der Zweifel mit, ob leistungsfördernde Mittel am Sieg beteiligt waren.

Nachdem Manuel Bertrán vom Liquigas-Team positiv auf EPO getestet wurde und damit als erster Dopingfall in die diesjährige "Skandal-Statistik" einging, soll sein Landsmann Moises Dueñas Nevado vom Rennstall Barloworld nicht nur mit EPO gedopt, sondern auch ein ganzes Doping-Arsenal mit sich geführt haben. Heute folgt nun die nächste Gewißheit und damit die dritte negative Schlagzeile. Der zweifache Etappensieger Riccardo Ricco vom Team Saunier Duval ist ebenfalls positiv auf CERA ("EPO-Mittel der dritten Generation") getestet worden. Sein Team hat sich nach Bekanntgabe der Nachricht von der Tour zurückgezogen.

This year's Tour has just scored a hatric - for doping that is. Today, Riccardo Ricco - who won two climbing stages last week - was taken into custody by French police after testing positive for banned substances.

The substances in question include blood booster erythropoietin (EPO) as well as banned substance CERA (Continuous Erythropoietin Receptor Activator).

His Spanish team, Saunier-Duval, have now pulled out of the race, and all other cycling activities, until they get to the bottom of the affair.

A truly sad time for the sport. It's just unfortunate that the world's media are all focussed on the Tour right now. One thing is for certain though, the tests carried out for the AFLD seem to be working. So if it means a few more guys get caught to help clean the sport, then so be it.

We all love this sport and if we keep showing our support for it (through think and thin) then we'll make it to the other side.

Também admiro a postura da organização: seria muito mais simples deixar por isso mesmo, ocultar essas informações, mas não, numa atitude corajosa estão jogando no ventilador todos os casos de trapaça.
