It doesn't work widespread yet but if you'll choose New York than all strets with blue outline are available to move that yellow guy, whose eyes you are using to watch. You can easily walk down the street even through doggy areas like biggest american housing project which was home for Nas or Mobb Deep - Queensbridge.

Although this is a made for TV sport, I would love to play a game. It is reminiscent of those old days in the high school gym when we dreamt of being able to dunk the ball and using the mini trampete when the gym teacher wasn't looking.

There was a brawl in the WBNA last night between the Detroit Shock and Los Angeles Sparks.

It happened at the Palace at Auburn Hills aka home of the Detroit Pistons.

There was some shoving, things got out of hand, the same as any NBA altercation. Nothing really spectacular, unusual or amazing happened. Tempers flare when people are competing and teams are rivals.

Yet it's the first time I can ever remember ANY news story related to the WBNA being front page news on ESPN.com, or a lead story on Sportscenter.

And the way ESPN covers these types of events?

Well...its akin to the way Fox News covers a Michael Moore film premiere. 

I don't know when it happened, but sometime in the last decade, sports news has transmogrified from in depth coverage of players and personalities, highlights, scores and statistical analysis into TMZ for jocks. The Brett Favre soap opera? Is there anything less interesting? Oh yeah, the whole ongoing "Barrack Obama's Minister said bad bad things" soap opera. Right. Similar? Yes. Long lasting? Yes. Does any of it matter? No.

Do I care what Chad Johnson had for breakfast? Not that much. Oh, he's at training camp today? GREAT! Thanks.

Have you ever noticed you spend more time reading about player contracts, transactions and legal issues than you do reading about anything that ACTUALLY HAPPENS DURING A GAME? 

I'll be the first to admit that I certainly pump out a lot of gossip sports stories. And why? Because they can be interesting. 

But unlike ESPN, I don't feel I have or should have any obligation to write about anything other than what I feel like writing about. ESPN should be about providing insight and great analysis and sports coverage and THEN about gossip. Lately its all gossip with a couple John Hollinger articles mixed in.

Is it because athletes don't want to talk to the media? Is it because the media can find a way to turn ANYTHING into a story? Is it because America runs on gossip?

Mostly, yes and yes.

Let me know the next time you see a WBNA game story or score or anything unrelated to this incident on the front page of ESPN.com. Please. Let me know. Maybe at their Championship? Maybe.

I mean this in the kindest way possible; the vast majority of sports fans do not care at all about the WBNA. In fact, I bet if you did a poll and asked any sports fan how many WBNA teams they could name off the top of their head, they would maybe be able to name one. Maybe.

Here is my list, this is completely off the top of my head:

Detroit Shock, Los Angeles Sparks, Houston something space travel related, New York Liberty, Seattle not Sonics...uhhh...that's it. See. Bad. And I bet most people couldn't even name more than a few cities teams are in.

And that's OK. I think that the WNBA has an opportunity as a future league. As in, if it hangs around for 20 years and women/young women are interested in the league, it could easily become a part of common sports culture. For a few reasons 1) people are fickle, they fall in and out of love with leagues, players, etc. The NBA is back in vogue, or coming back in vogue in a big way. Might not last forever. Shit, ask the average sports fan to name 20 NHL teams and I doubt they could do that these days. 2) trends come and go. People said soccer would never catch on in America, well it sort of is catching on. It might be slow, but it is coming. I swear. I mean it this time. Look at Tennis. People who didn't give a shit about tennis in June are shitting their pants in excitement now. 3) Any league needs time. Be it SLAMBALL, the XFL, Arena Football, the WNBA or MLS. A league needs to build its history, gain a reputation, and stay with it through the tough years. Things change. People change. If you get some kids into it, who knows what might happen down the line.

But right now, the WNBA will continue to be exploited for the two times this season where something newsworthy has happened (A WOMAN DUNKED AGAIN! OH MY GOD! 3 ARTICLES NOW!!!/DID YOU SEE THAT BRAWL! THAT WAS AWFUL! THEY SHOULD BE ASHAMED!!).

Stupid.

Does everyone else feel ready for the overwhelming tragedy that will almost certainly befall the Beijing Olympics in a month?

I've never been a huge Olympics fan for a few reasons: I'm not that interested in a lot of events, The events I am interested in are rarely televised, the time delay from when they happen to when they are broadcast sucks because I already know the outcomes, Mario Kart 64 isn't an event...etc.

But I feel almost positive that something horrible is going to happen at these Olympics. I really hope it doesn't, but I just get the feeling, the way things are going...

Speaking of, SLAMBALL player Ivan Lattimore will remain in prison until the September hearing for Domestic Violence. The more I read about this case the more fucked up it is.

Barry Bonds is apparently on the way back to the majors. Or rather, his agent says he could be ready to be back in the majors within 10 days. That doesn't mean anyone is interested. The Royals should make him an offer. Or The O's or the Blue Jays. Or the Mariners. Or the Brewers. Either a team that could use someone to get on base consistently to help put them over the top, or a shitty team that wants to sell some tickets. Maybe the Nationals. He'll NEVER come to the Red Sox. He hates Boston and Boston hates him. Drop it Bombs.

Matt Jones likes Coke. I can't say I'm surprised by this completely. I mean, I never expect any athlete to get caught cutting a mound of coke in a car or anything like that, but I had heard about Matt Jones personality issues in the past. I hope he gets some help.

Red's Army had some nice insight about James Posey. This is one deal the Celtics really need to get done. A) He's tough. He throws bodies around and he pisses people off. B) He is a great shooter. C) He is never afraid of anything. I never had an ounce of fear with Posey on the court in ANY situation last season. He never gets down on himself, he never doubts his shot and he just doesn't seem to worry about stupid shit. D) He makes BIG plays (the steal in game 6 against the Pistons...for example). He's always aware of what's going on and will always try to make the heads up play. E) He could easily start if someone got hurt. F) He's the best possible off-the-bench replacement for Paul Pierce in the NBA, in that he, like Pierce, has shooting range, can take it inside or jack up a three, he plays defense he isn't careless with the ball and he knows when to pass and when to shoot. GET POSEY. DANNY AINGE!! SIGN JAMES POSEY NOW OR I WILL TRADE MY DANNY AINGE BLUE JAYS ROOKIE CARD FOR 4 ERIC MONTROSS CARDS AND A KENNY ANDERSON HOLOGRAM!!!

Things have been heating up at Universal Studios Hollywood, though this time it is not another backlot fire. Rather, right outside of the world famous Universal globe occured the best thing to happen to sports since Space Jam: SlamBall. In an age where sports have been tarnished by steroids, gambling, and Boston sports, SlamBall has arrived as a fresh example of what a professional sport can truely become.    

Created by Mason Gordon, SlamBall is a four player team sport that many have identified as a live-action video game. Played on a court surrounded by a plexi-glass wall and with four trampolines at each end of the court, this sports combines the acrobatics of gymnastics, the physical play of hockey, and the general format of basketball; most notably being the slam dunk. From 2002-2003, two seasons of professional SlamBall were aired on Spike TV entertaining viewers throughout the world. Between Stan "Shakes" Fletcher's potent offensive attacks, Mason Gordon's front flip dunks, and Adam Hooker's ferocious blocks at the stopper position, SlamBall was able to create an eye-boggling experience that other new sports, such as Arena Football and the good old XFL, were not able to achieve. Unfortunately, the official SlamBall league never played a third season, until now.

This past month, with a court situated in front of the entrance to Universal Studios Hollywood, newcomers and veterans reconviened and took part in another explosive season of SlamBall. With veteran players such as Stan Fletcher, Sean "Inches" Jackson, and Adam Hooker and coaches, such as the famous Coach Carter (the real Carter, not Samuel L. Jackson), brought back into the mix, the sport has returned to form and glory. After attending a few regular season games, the championship match, and the highly enjoyable slam dunk contest, we can attest that SlamBall is here to stay. As GrillzCheese exclaims, "This is a real extreme sport. Instead of just changing the field like other sports remakes, SlamBall has its own rules and feel to it, unlike Arena Football." Without giving too much away, we guarantee that this season has heated rivalries, amusing brawls between the players, tons of mid-air collisions, and, of course, breath-taking slam dunks.

Expect the return of SlamBall to arrive on television some time in August. With the NBA season at an end, prepare to witness true champions!  

For those of you who are not familiar with the sport, it is essential basketball with carefully placed trampolines on the court. This produces some great action. I am not sure how else to explain it so here is an example of a Slamball game.

Okay, time to travel back to Earth and use some rationale. I probably watched a few games when the show was on back a few years ago on SpikeTV. It was...interesting. If promoted right, I think it could be somewhat successful, like Arena Football. The game itself is rather weird and most people will most likely not enjoy it. Still, the And 1 Streetball Mixtapes were popular when they were a constant on ESPN. If Slamball can convince people that it is a legitimate league, I think it could survive as a fun sport to watch.

People need to take this as it is. A fun sport that shows some athletic people do what they have fun doing. It can be ridiculed, but it is no different then watching the And 1 tour or watching any sort of skills challenge. My final verdict? It most likely will not succeed. Still, if and when it does come back, I urge you to watch a game and see what you think. If nothing else, it will entertain you for a few minutes!

I actually remember watching (or trying to watch) SlamBall during its brief and poorly-viewed run on Spike TV - it reminded me of the kind of sports that are created for futuristic sci-fi movies set after some kind of apocalypse.

Now, aside from all the obvious reasons why one might not want to try to launch an entirely new sport on the world, one has to wonder why a guy with Albrecht's experience in the business would invest in such a patently absurd and juvenile sport like SlamBall?

I can only imagine he thinks it makes him look hip or cool.  See, he's with it!  He loves SlamBall!
