Neste mês, foi lançado um serviço online para administração de finanças pessoais, o Gbolso, que permite você inserir dados sobre seus ganhos e gastos e controlá-los.

O site é bem feito e fácil de usar: basta colocar um apelido e um e-mail qualquer para se cadastrar. No entanto, a primeira coisa que veio à mente foi: as cifras da minha fortuna e dos meus gastos homéricos vão ficar na net?

Consultei a assessoria da empresa que informou o seguinte sobre segurança: o site ainda não possui criptografia (mas vai adotar, em breve, o protocolo de segurança SSL), mas também não exige que sejam informados endereço, número de documentos, informações bancárias, nem mesmo nome. Assim, se alguém invadir, terá acesso a um conjunto de informações financeiras sem identificação.

O serviço também oferece a opção de ser usado pela rede social Orkut, por meio de um aplicativo, a nova atração do site de relacionamento. Para saber como instalar o aplicativo no Orkut, clique aqui.

Se você estiver receoso de colocar dados sobre seus ganhos e suas dívidas na rede ou não utiliza a rede constantemente, pode optar por programas a serem instalados.

Testei e gostei do serviço oferecido. Estou até usando no momento juntamente com o software finance desktop que utilizo em casa.

Update: Fiz um teste no envio do SMS e o sistema por enquanto não funciona. Vou tentar pelo e-mail!

For the past week, I've been busily working on a video for VBS's closing "ceremony".  It's been fun, although I ran into a problem... I have high standards for anything image-related, but I've never worked with video before.  That means hours just playing with and trying to figure out my Mac's basic video editing software, let alone trying to get the actual video right.

I finally got the video how I liked it, but was having some real problems arranging the sound.  Needless to say, I didn't get the video presentable until around 6:10 this evening... with the program starting at 6, of course.  For my first attempt, I thought it turned out pretty good.  There were some things I wish I'd had time to do, and I noticed some mistakes in the video that bothered me, but it was passable.

After the program, I was wiped out. But, being the perfectionist that I often forget I am, what's the first thing I wanted to do when I got home?  Fix the video.

And so I did.

(note: I'm not posting the video on here because I don't have permission from all the kids, but if you want to see it, let me know.  Otherwise, just imagine a bunch of kids running around, having fun, and being goofy, and you get the idea.)

1. Download Statusbar > como o nome diz, coloca na bara de status os downloads do momento. Smples e fácil de gerencia-los.
2. Foxmarks > sincroniza suas bookmarks em vários PCs, mantém tudo online e de quebra faz backup. Fundamental pra quem já trocou de PC algumas vezes e perdeu tudo.
3. Gmail Space > pra fazer backup usando sua conta do Gmail. Pode subir arquivos de qualquer tamanho que ele faz o divide por 10 Mb (tamanho máximo do email do Gmail).
4. IE view > Para aqueles sites mal-feitos, que teimam em não ser universais e não abrem no FF.
5. Tab Mix Plus > Torna as abas mais espertas, e, principalmente, permite reabri-las caso tenha as fechado.

La crisis en el mundo del Software

A mi todo esto de las crisis me llama mucho la atención. Siempre hablando de crisis, grandes, pequeñas, medianas, para todos los gustos.

No dudo que existan estas crisis, pero a mi de esta palabra lo que mas me gusta es su acepción etimológica que casi todos conocéis. Crisis = Cambio

En mi quehacer diario hablo con muchas empresas del sector y mientras unos tienen una percepción de que todo esta parado, la de otros es totalmente la contraria.

En el mundo empresarial, crisis, es interpretado por la industria como época propicia para reducir costes y esto si lo sabemos aprovechar es un muy interesante nicho en donde la informática juega una papel determinante.

Por tanto, si hay crisis en el mercado, seguramente lo que deberemos pensar es que el mercado esta cambiando, sus demandas no son las mismas que hace unos meses o años y seguramente si sabemos ofrecer lo que demandan, conseguiremos convertirlo en una gran oportunidad de crecimiento.

Voy a poner algún ejemplo de clientes de Velneo, que me resultan cercanos y veremos como aprovechan esta época de Crisis (Cambios) y otros que no la aprovechan.

Primer Ejemplo: Una conocido cliente de Velneo, dispone de una plataforma para la gestión de cines. El Cine es un sector evidentemente en declive. Ellos tienen su desarrollo compitiendo con otros dos Caja Madrid (Tice) y Servicaixa.

Su software es evidentemente muchísimo mejor que el de la competencia, y lo tienen en el mercado desde hacer dos años. Sin embargo por determinados motivos no llegaba a cuajar. Empeñados en vender simplemente un software mejor.

Sin embargo y en los últimos 6 meses han pasado de 2 multicines a 16, ya hay comunidades, como Galicia, en las que es imposible adquirir una entrada, si no es mediante la plataforma desarrollada en Velneo.

¿Por qué?

Evidentemente por muchos factores, pero principalmente por su cambio de chip.

El producto es igual de bueno, el sector esta cada vez peor y para ellos ha sido su mejor arma de ventas. Pero al empresario del cine ya no se le venden funcionalidades, sino reducción de costes y aumento de márgenes comerciales.

Conclusión, cuanto peor este el sector del Cine, el empresario que quiera sobrevivir más cerca está de su producto y por mal que esté el sector, tener el 40 o 50% del pastel es todo un chollo.

Segundo Ejemplo: Uno de los clientes de Velneo, con unos dos años de antigüedad, desarrolló un Erp a partir de nuestras plantillas y enfoco su mercado de forma clara.

Se dirigían a todas las empresas de fabricación, clientes de Navision, Sap Business One, etc quemadas tras 4 o 5 años de experiencia y que no habían conseguido lo que les ofrecieron, adecuar el software a su negocio. Todos sabemos que esto con un Erp parametrizable es muy difícil sino se dispone de capital casi ilimitado.

Principalmente y lo que más le preocupa a este sector el análisis real de los costes de producción. No hay fabricante que no se resista a la siguiente necesidad.

“Su empresa conoce si da beneficios o perdidas a final de año, pero seguro que no conoce con exactitud el beneficio obtenido en cada cliente, cada pedido e incluso cada pieza” y esto sabemos que exige de una alta personalización del producto.

Estos clientes ex consultores de otras plataformas, decidieron migrar a Velneo ya con esa premisa.

Ellos tenían claro lo que querían hacer, pero les faltaba la herramienta. Evidentemente la solución Velneo + vErp + Su conocimiento de la industria ha hecho posible un éxito que ni ellos mismos soñaban hace pocos meses y lo que es mas importante la satisfacción de sus clientes, absoluta, por que además eran clientes que podían comparar.

Ahí es donde existe la diferencia, en ofertar algo que la competencia simplemente no puede.

Ejemplo 3, Como No hacer negocio.

Dude durante varios minutos de poner un ejemplo negativo, ya que son muchos los clientes con los que hablo que siguen pensando en desarrollar este tipo de productos, pero al final me decidí.

Un tpv para restauración (Bares, Restaurantes, etc.)

Con ello conseguiremos todos los efectos no deseados.

- No creo que ningún restaurante, bar. etc., piense que el instalar un Tpv en su local, represente una reducción de márgenes, o un aumento del beneficio, sino todo lo contrario, un gasto añadido.

- Realizarlo en Velneo, no aporta ninguna ventaja competitiva, ya que no vamos a dedicar ni un solo a personalizar ese cliente. Hay muchos productos en el mercado, que si bien es cierto seguro que han llevado tiempos 10 veces superiores a si se hubieran realizado en Velneo, el hecho es que ya están hechos y ahora solo tratan de amortizarlos, con lo cual nos encontramos nuevamente en desventaja.

Ejemplo 4. Como si hacer negocio en el software para hostelería

En épocas de crisis, siempre hay gente que incluso funcionándoles bien el negocio, piensan en proyectos nuevos y este es un caso que me contaron el otro día.

Un restaurante ofrecía servicios de menú en una zona de oficinas, evidentemente su calidad es la mejor de cuantos le rodean, pero físicamente no pueden atender más gente. Hasta el punto que la gente no acude por no tener que esperar tanto tiempo.

Solución: Al dueño de este restaurante se le ocurrió, vender por Web. Una Web sencilla, seleccionas tu bocata, tu ensalada, etc., El destino esta cerrado y solo puedes pedir desde un conjunto de edificios de oficinas del mismo parque empresarial, pagas con tarjeta de crédito y eliges turno de reparto, existen 3 distintos.

En el momento se realiza la compra por Web, en la cocina esta saliendo la orden de comanda, el repartidor cuando llega tiene las bandejas con los paquetes numerados, oficina de entrega de cada turno. EL pago ya esta realizado puesto que se realiza con tarjeta de crédito o con una cuenta de Paypal. En definitiva una solución para la Crisis, (Menús caros, menos disponible metálico y menos tiempo).

Un proyecto de estas características en Velneo, todos sabéis que en 20 días está realizado, y pagar 18 o 20.000 euros por él, o un buen mantenimiento no va a ser un obstáculo para el empresario. Eso es aprovechar la crisis y no intentar vender tpv como hay miles por 900 Euros.

Y por supuesto para aprovechar la crisis lo primero es cambiar la mente, el chip y de herramienta.

Ya que además de reducir los costos de los clientes y aumentar los beneficios de los clientes, los primeros serán los nuestros.

Piensa en la necesidad del cliente, piensa en que tienes una herramienta con una velocidad de desarrollo que no tiene otra, piensa que en cualquier solución puedes aprovechar las plantillas que seguro que suponen más de un 80 % de la globalidad del proyecto, piensa que eres más ágil que nadie en cubrir la necesidad de tu cliente y piensa que solo tu y Velneo, pueden cubrir esa necesidad, que el empresario se ha artado a buscar.

Pues aquí va mi veredicto final: Ecto funciona, y lo hace muy bien. Ya dos meses usándolo y no tengo grandes quejas respecto de este software que me parece muy intuitivo; la curva de aprendizaje toma poco tiempo pues configurarlo por primera vez te toma no más de dos minutos y en cuanto menos te lo esperas ya estás bloggeando, y una de las cosas que más me gusta es que tienes en tu disco duro un respaldo de tus posts en caso de que te hackeen tu sitio.

¿Lo mejor? es que es gratuito! ¿Cómo? sí, simple y sencillamente cuando se les acaba el tiempo de prueba solo le dicen que lo quieren volver a probar y listo, vuelve a funcionar y a darte otros 21 días de prueba.No soy cruel y no voy a decir que hay algo que no me gusta en honor a los programadores de Ecto, al contrario un aplauso a su esfuerzo y su contribución a la blogosfera.

Finalmente no se que recomendarles para Linux o para Windows puesto que Ecto lo uso solo en mi mac portátil y escribo cuando me agarre la inspiración (que ma...mucho el sol).

Yo tampoco. Pero pueden utilizar múltiples trucos. 

Por ejemplo, escribir palabras sinónimas; escribir una palabra bloqueada pero en otro idioma y luego traducir la página al propio idoma; usar propramas que se saltan los filtros; recurrir a trucos que convienten la IP en números que lleven al sitio bloqueado...

B2B or B2C?

Going after business or the consumer next door? After this decision is made, I can deep even further into the chosen market and explore the possibilities of its vertical sub-markets.

To help me on my research, I decided to write down the pros and cons of each market, from the mISV angle of view.

• What makes each market attractive or prohibitive?
• Which market is easier to get into?
• Which market can provide me with a sustainable income over the years?

These and other questions, I'm trying to answer with this post.

Business to Business

Pros
Knowledge of the market
Most mISVers are developers, so they build business applications for a living. This fact allows them to get an insight on how corporations work, what their needs are, etc. The same applies for the consumer market, developers are consumers too, but they see applications differently than a non-technical person; developers use the best software for the job where home users use the best they can put their hands on.

Pricing
Corporations can pay more for an application that will save them money or improve operations. Consumers are used to get everything for free.

Marketing is easier
There’re so many established and proved methods for marketing business, like newsletters, business lists, blogging, etc. To attract consumers online, you mostly depend on SEO, direct marketing is prohibitive for a mISV. At the other hand, If you sell a software package for dentists, you can easily use traditional marketing to get them to buy your product (magazine ads, direct mail, trade shows, etc). 

Cons
Technical support
Corporations won't buy an application unless they’re sure they’ll get good technical support. Most mISVs call it the most important aspect of their business. Consumers can deal with online help or plain email support. Of course, all depends on the kind of software and how easy is too learn and use.

Businesses must won one at a time
Word of mouth works great for consumer products, but in the corporate world amISVer must win one customer at a time. Businesses don’t communicate like home users do. Attracting businesses requires contact with purchasing managers and at the minimum a phone call. Again, all depends on the price tag and the kind of software.

Business to Consumer

Pros
Larger market
Count the industries build around the consumer (games, movies, music, etc). These industries have multi-million budgets for a product, which will sell to millions of buyers. Businesses are way insmaller quantity but B2B has more vertical markets for a mISV to enter.

"Beehive" effect
A company can built a consumer oriented web site and attract millions, where to do the same with businesses you must have the size of Microsoft. Check any social networking or dating site and you'll see millions of members using them every day. Only huge corporations have the same audience size in the business to business market. The same applies for both web and desktop applications (P2P, IM).

Cons
Overcrowded
Where there're bees there's honey. But with honey comes sting too. Industries with large audiences attract competition. Take for example the gaming industry and the stiff competition new game developers face bringing a new product into a huge but mature market.

Low price products
Consumers don't like to pay for software and when they have to, they don't pay much. How many consumer applications cost more than $300? With low price items, a mISV must make up in volume sales to earn a good revenue.

Unpredictable
Consumers can change habits so easy where companies are very reluctant on making changes in existing infrastructures (cost prohibitive, time consuming). See, how many times an average person switches operating systems versus a corporation. I know a few of companies that still use MS Works. In contrast, how many home users are still using Windows 95?

Piracy
A large number of home users use pirate copies of software like games, utilities and others. Businesses at the other side they license every single copy they install.  This fact forces developers to use every mean necessary to protect their software.

Why am I recalling all these???

• Because, I won’t forget how many times I disassembled my PC just to see how everything works and put it back together again (I’ve done that about 20 times).
• Because, I won’t forget the thrill and excitement I had when I found out that there was an “Undelete File” function in ‘PC Tools’.
• Because, I won’t forget how pioneering I found the idea of “hyperlinks” (remember no HTML yet). I could click on a word in a document and be transferred to another one. Wow!!!

Later, as years passed by, we moved from BBS to the first internet browser. DOS gave in to Windows, everybody started to click on a mouse and learn that having multiple applications running at the same time was soooo cool.

The excitement level was at its highest.

Playing with Windows 3.1 (mostly fixing settings) was so much fun and I replaced VisiCalc with Excel (what do you mean I don’t have to press F9 to re-calculate?). MS Word replaced WordPerfect and I learn Corel Draw. Somewhere there I started programming using Turbo Pascal 6; yes, back then we programmed in text mode on an 80x25 characters screen matrix. Delphi 1.0 and its visual designer was a milestone for me. I could drag and drop a button into a form, where before I needed 1000 lines of code to do the same.

There were so many new things to explore. I've been spending hours in front of the monitor. I remember my then girlfriend - now wife – had to get between me and the monitor for me to notice her. I’m lucky she’s still with me.

Now, after all these years in computing and programming and after working with so many new technologies, I can’t get the same feeling like those days.
I can’t get the sense of great achievement anymore, the feeling of discovering something so great like a treasure in a hidden chest.

Don’t rush to say: get an interesting job. I’ve created some great applications in the past years; I wasn’t totally bored.

I’ve designed and programmed a multilingual search engine with features even the big search engines didn’t have back then. One of them was using a spell checker to suggest keywords to the user (not just corrected keywords, but also related to the original search). My manager initially rejected my idea and when Google implemented it a few months later (still looking for the “rat” 8-) ), she realized the value of it. Because of my experience in search engine applications a recruiter from Microsoft called me once for a position at MSN search.

Now, down to my point of going back to the future by moving to mISV these are the reasons why I believe I’ll get back that old days feeling:

• Making my own decisions.
  This is not the usual “I want to be the boss”. No. It has to do with the belief that I have good ideas but it’s so hard to pass them up the corporate ladder for reasons everybody knows. This fact aggravates me. I hate when good ideas are wasted because of corporate politics.That of course, has its downsides too. If I make the wrong decision, I’ll found it a bit late after the idea is implemented. But, that’s what the community is for; help me in the way.
• Sense of achievement.
  It may sounds bad, but I love to hear compliments. I like to hear positive comments and get credit for a good work.I’m not looking to be the next Bill Gates (is it too late for that, right?), but I like when people recognize me.It makes me feel proud to know some companies out there, doing well using my applications. I believe, it’s moral after all.So if I try hard, I may get recognition for my work from the community one day.
• Financial freedom.
  I’ve been blessed of earning good money from my profession even at the worst times of the industry. So, it’s not totally about money. And no, I’m not looking to be a millionaire (I put this on the title because it sounded good).
  My philosophy of financial freedom is one:
  The more I work the better I’m compensated. My financial success or failure will not depend on someone else’s decisions. I like to take matters on my own hands.

So, here I am, thinking of starting my own software business and preparing for it the best I can. I still have a lot to learn and until I get that great idea, I have some time to do my research.
