So, in fairness of equal time, here are the rest of Wave 9 — definitely some of the cooler sculpts and characters to come out of the revamped G.I. Joe toy line.

[caption id="attachment_94" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="More than meets the eye"][/caption]

Rumor has it that the new GM concept Corvette, the C7 will debut on the silver screen in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen due out sometime next summer, with the car itself possibly hitting show room floor that September (2009).

Personally, I do think it looks like a pretty cool car, and my early money is that this will most likely be a Decepticon but which one, I have no idea. Bad ass cars, usually of black and silver design with sleek lines usually go to the bad guys. The bad news is I hear there will be no Megatron in the sequel which is a bummer to me as there are only two other viable Decepticons, but still can't hold a candle to Megatron: Starscream and Soundwave, and neither of those were a car.

It appears Shia LeBeouf also re cently hurt his hand so some of his scenes will be postponed upwards of four weeks while they adjust the schedule to film around his injuries until he is better.

Sadly, no new news on my other favorite Hasbro franchise turned movie: G.I. Joe. I've been scouring the net for any news or leaked images for Cobra Commander, but have come up with squat (so if you guys come up with any, please send them my way). I've seen the pics for Storm Shadow, Snake Eyes and The Baroness and I approve. However, and this is a big HOWEVER, I am not so keen on the Joe's black leather clad uniforms.

What made G.I. Joe so 'fantastical' was their unique fatigues, outfits, and costumes that the Joe's would wear. In the movie adaptation, they look more like the X-Men movie leather uniforms. While it worked for Charles Xavier's mutants in the movies, it really diminishes from the characterizations that made these 3.75" plastic action figures so fun when I was growing up. Now they just look like any other black-clad action team. I dunno, I'm just getting really scared about this. The Cobra Commander outfit better make up for it and stay close to its comic book roots.

Ed. Note: The following article contains spoilers for the upcoming G.I. Joe movie. If you don't want to know anything about the flick, stop reading!

In 2007, director Michael Bay broke the collective hearts of millions of Transformers fans with the release of his abysmal movie adaptation of the hugely popular 80's toy line. The flick was a spectacle of excess, with lots of explosions and dramatic slow motion pans over the robot carnage, but it was obvious that Bay had no respect for the lore and legacy of the Transformers property.

I wasn't too broken up about it, because I was never that into the Transformers as a kid. After Star Wars had run it's course in '83, I became a die-hard G.I. Joe collector. I was absolutely obsessed with the "Real American Heroes" action figure line and accompanying comic book series, so when it was announced that G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra was finally going into production, I held my breath and hoped against hope that the same transgressions perpetrated upon the Transformers franchise by Bay and his cronies would not be visited upon my beloved G.I. Joe. Tragically, all of my hopes and dreams of a decent G.I. Joe film were annihilated as soon as the details started leaking on the Internet. This movie is going suck on an epic scale, and here's the top ten reasons why:

10.) Roadblock isn't called Roadblock: Anyone who has ever read a single G.I. Joe comic book or even watched an episode of that ridiculous animated series, knows that Roadblock is one of the most prominent (and popular) members of the G.I. Joe team. He's one of only a handful of African-American joes, and as the team's heavy machine-gunner (he could hand-fire a .50 caliber machine gun!), he was a vital component of just about every mission. He was also a great character, demonstrating fierce loyalty to his fellow Joes, as well as a knack for gourmet cooking! With that knowledge readily available, you have to wonder why the Rhodes scholars behind this production saw fit to essentially cast this character with a suitable actor (the uber-cool Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, who played Mr. Eko on LOST), outfit him with a heavy machine gun, then inexplicably turn around and call him "Heavy Duty", a lame add-on character who arrived on the scene at the tail-end of the G.I. Joe toy line.

9.) Destro won't be wearing his steel mask: At least, not until the very end of the movie, according to spoiler reports. Which means that the primary villain of the film will be the invisble douchebag from season one of Heroes (he also played Dr. Who, apparently), running around in a three-piece suit. I bet we won't even get to see the sweet pimp medallion... *sigh*

8.) It's got a Wayans brother in the cast: First of all, there were over 300 Joe characters to choose from, and the writers stuck Ripcord in this film. Ripcord? The guy was in maybe one or two episodes of the animated series and about ten issues of the comic series. There were plenty of hugely popular Joes that could have filled this spot on the team. How about Flint? Gung Ho? Spirit? Hell, even Shipwreck would have been a far better choice. But Ripcord? Come on now!

A quick search on IMDb reveals the casting directors (yes, that's right, they needed two clueless asshats for this job) for G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra are named Ronna Kress and Nancy Bishop. These two geniuses were paid six-figure salaries to look at this extremely white paratrooper character and think, "Hey, how about that Wayans guy? He was hilarious in Little Man!" These two should be bound, gagged, tied to chairs and be forced to watch the later years of In Living Color (you know, the ones with Chris Rock...*shudder*).

7.) Storm Shadow looks like a member of Panic At The Disco: When Larry Hama introduced the concept of ninjas into the G.I. Joe mythology in 1984, it took the saga of the Real American Heroes to new heights of awesomeness. Suddenly, there was a mysterious and fascinating backstory that tied several characters together and introduced one of the most badass dudes to ever wield a bow & arrow, the Cobra ninja Storm Shadow. Ol' Stormie rocked the classic ninja outfit, except his was stark white, which made it unique and completely kickass. Now, sadly, Snake-Eyes' sword brother and ultimate nemesis looks like he belongs in a super-gay Asian emo band with this incredibly lame white leather suit. His battle togs aren't that much better, either. Nice Keds, asshole.

6.) It's directed by Stephen Sommers (You know, The Mummy guy): He also directed Van Helsing, one of the biggest cinematic turds of all-time. After that travesty, this fucking guy shouldn't be allowed to direct traffic on a one-way street, much less helm a G.I. Joe movie. Don't get me wrong, the Mummy films certainly have their charms and are fun summer popcorn flicks, but the same style of filmmaking just won't fly for G.I. Joe. What the hell were the producers thinking here? Couldn't they have found someone with a background in making military action films? Shit, was Michael Bay not available? That guy's notorious for fetishizing soldiers, aircraft, and other military equipment in his flicks. Oh wait, that's right, he was busy raping the childhoods of thousands of Transformers fans. My bad.

5.) Duke and Cobra Commander are teenagers:

Oh look honey, the two main characters and leaders of their respective organizations are played by that kid from Step Up 2 Tha Streets and that kid from 3rd Rock from the Sun, isn't that cute? [shoots self].

4.) It's an origin story: Good Lord, just for once, could Hollywood have one iota of respect for an audience's intelligence and drop them into a universe where everything is already established? Would it be that difficult to follow a story that involves a group of highly-trained elite military specialists fighting against an evil terrorist organization? Well, apparently Hollywood feels the world is made up of slack-jawed mouth-breathers who need to know the origins of every face that hits the screen, so valuable time that could be spent on a compelling and intense story is wasted on character introductions and tedious exposition. It's becoming incredibly frustrating.

Think about it for a minute, some of the greatest movies of all time simply dropped audiences into the middle of a story without explaining a damn thing. Take the original Star Wars, for example. You got a very brief text crawl that set up a few things, but then you were immediately smack dab in the middle of an insane space battle where all hell is breaking loose and the two main characters for the first 30 minutes of the movie are freakin' robots! It worked, however, because eventually the strength of the story and the characters erased any need for background information or "audience orientation". In my opinion, the exact same scenario could work for G.I Joe. Just plop the audience down in the midst of an intense firefight between some Joes and Cobras, and let the characters and the story shine through.

3.) It's set in the future: Ten years in the future, according to the uber-geniuses behind this project. Fantastic. This means we'll get to see "futuristic" weapons, "futuristic" battle armor, and all the Cobra soldiers will more than likely be cyborgs. FAIL.

2.) No Stalker: This omission is probably the most criminal of them all, as Stalker was a crucial member of the team with ties to the Snake-Eyes/Storm Shadow story. See, Stalker was part of a LRRP (Long-range recon patrol) in Vietnam along with Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow (who went to train with the same ninja clan together after the war), and after the war he was one of the first members recruited for the team by the U.S. Government. If you go by the comics and not the animated series, Stalker was a total badass who was essentially third in command of the team behind Hawk and Duke. It stands to reason that if you are going to do an origin story of the G.I. Joe team, you'd probably want to feature the one guy who helped start it all, asshats.

1.) Everyone's wearing black rubber suits...AGAIN. Please....please...For fuck's sake...CAN WE STOP WITH THE FUCKING BLACK RUBBER SUITS ALREADY??? Jesus Christ, this movie could have a been a competent Hollywood costume director's wet dream, with hundreds of unique and colorful military costume designs to choose from, but it all went up in flames when some douche-y studio exec or market analyst stuck their mitts in where they didn't belong and said, "Hey, X-Men was a group of heroes and they wore black rubber suits! I seem to recall that franchise made a shit-ton of cash, so let's scrap all of this camoflauge and practical military clothing and have them wear black rubber suits too!" Yeah, great. Wonderful. So instead of having a team comprised of unique individuals with costumes reflecting their identities, we once again have a bunch of guys who all look exactly the same, so they can look pretty for a group photo. FUCK. YOU. This decision was beyond terrible, and it's getting to be a ridiculous team/action movie cliche. I guess we have the costume director for the first Batman film (1989) to blame for this trend, as almost every single superhero flick to come out since then has featured the dreaded black leather/rubber jumpsuit: all the subsequent Batmans, Daredevil, the Blade films, The Matrix films, The X-Men films, the list goes on and on. ENOUGH ALREADY!

[caption id="attachment_76" align="alignleft" width="233" caption="Cobra Commander pissed at series finale"][/caption]

The promo tagline for the final issue of this incarnation of the G.I. Joe core book from Devil's Due reads as such:

"This is it! It's all been leading to this issue! The war finally brings the G.I. Joe team and Cobra face-to-face! Every feud, every drop of bad blood, all the history between these two groups finally meet on the battlefield for THE knock-down, drag-out fight of G. I. Joe comics! Twenty-five years of payoff happens here!"

Bullshit!

This has to be one of the biggest disappointments of a series finale I have ever read. Period. Maybe not as bad on how Marvel once wrapped up Doom 2099 by letting the artwork go to hell as if to say to the reader "We gave up on this series, so enjoy the contractually obligated crap we have to churn out in the meantime". Well G.I. Joe, especially with the resurgence of many of the hot 80's properties and current film adaptation underway deserved a much better send off.

I was actually surprised when I learned issue 36 would be the last. It seems just a few years ago, the G.I. Joe universe was gaining momentum once again after that lackluster Image mini-series somewhat earlier. Granted it would never approach the Joe heyday's it had under Marvel with scribe Larry Hama, but it was exciting again. Devils Due scaled somewhat back on the character roster, I can't blame them...there were so many Joe's and Cobra's....it was impossible to keep track of who's who and where are they with only book.

I thought they were doing well when they announced a Storm Shadow ongoing series (though the artwork is a bit off for my tastes), a few various one-shots, and Special Missions and Declassified books kept me going.

It was great to see the gloves come off with Cobra, and I enjoyed the 'Coil' arc, the introduction of Wraith, the hunt for The Baroness all happening in the core title of 'America's Elite'. I was very excited to hear about the 12 issue arc World War III.

The first few issues seemed 'okay', as if were about to ramp up the excitement factor, but sadly it just never got there for me. It was only around issue 34 (part 10 of 12) did I learn that the series was coming to and end, and I had no explanation as to why it was ending. With two issues left, I really began to worry as it just seemed like the story was stalling, or at least the elements concerning Cobra Commander. By the end of issue 35 the Commander was headed to the Appalachian mountains were we were left to believe he was going to make his final, epic stand.

Issue 36 is a double sized issue. Double sized of rushed plotlines, forgotten characters, tangential flashbacks, and very little pay off. Of course the Joe's win the battle, but my word, it was the cheapest and simpleton way to wrap up the series and hardcore fans should be as upset as I am. Poor Larry Hama, I don't care what he has to say in public...putting on a good game face for scribe Mark Powers, but Mr. Powers was able to drain any sort of epic adventure and character excitement out of the series in the last few issues that Larry spent so many years crafting and enter twining over at Marvel and Joe continuity.

So Recondo and some ex-Cobra schlep named Rourke have more face time than Snake Eyes? Than the Baroness? Destro goes to jail in one panel? Alexander is shot and killed in two panels?

The biggest travesty in my opinion was the treatment, or lack of treatment of Cobra Commander. The whole reason G.I. Joe was brought back into existence was the result of the formation of Cobra and its mysterious leader Cobra Commander. After what seemed to be a promise at the end of issue 35, we barely see the Commander at all in the finale. And to be taken out by a tackle by a crippled Joe wearing a jetpack at the end was horrific to the fans.

No last show down? Not a tense stand-off? No last defiant speech or last ditch action on the Commanders behalf? No face reveal after all these years? WHAT THE F____?? I cannot and refuse to believe that Cobra Commander was simply tackled, knocked out, and hauled away.

The last two pages shows an unmasked Commander (we don't see his face however) in an orange prison jumpsuit sitting in a chair making some last declaration that Cobra will survive...and it's revealed that this isolation room is at the bottom of the ocean. Oh, fuck me. This is so bad.

I can only hope...and pray...that Devil's Due had to give up on the comic license with the film be launched next year...and maybe will be re-launched again at that time with a new number one that gives the fans some sort of payoff. Maybe it will go back to Marvel? I don't know....but to tell me that 25 years...YEARS..of G.I. Joe and Cobra comic adventures is reduced to Cobra Commander sitting in an underwater prison because he was simply tackled and all the world is all apple pie after this is complete bullshit.

BOOOOO!

Dear United States Armed Forces,

Dear United States Armed Forces,

If I ever get drafted into the military, I'd like to be a combat weapon specialist. Unlike the common sniper, I believe my weapon specialties would be more effective both tactically and psychologically. I know the sniper already can lock down whole platoons and completely demoralize the unit. But you know, eventually if the platoon just waits a few days, the sniper would just get bored and start shooting at ducks, and then that's when you get'em. So it got me thinking how I would best utilize my current skills to maximize my efficiency in your armed forces.

I was thinking maybe I shouldn't be armed with the regulation supplies and arms. Maybe I'd work best armed with just a scythe. Imagine if you were asleep in your camp and I came in swinging a huge scythe around dressed in a long dark hooded cloak. You'd freak out right? You wouldn't even reach for your gun because you'll be like "Oh fuck, it's Death, my gun would be useless." Not exactly in those words, cause you may speak a different language, but it's to that extent. Anyways, running wouldn't be an option because at that point I'd slice off your feet and I'd bet that'd really hurt, even for a military guy. The whole camp would be in disarray. Once I finish the camp, I'd look for their tank, hop in, and drive their tank to their HQ. All the soldiers there would surround the tank because they'd get no response form the radio. But once I jump out with my scythe, everyone there would freak out just the same and it'll just be a bloodbath. I'm sure the higher ranking officers would be confused too because no where in their training would be on how to deal with Death. Being smart and all, they may stay calm and think they're safe as long as their name isn't on Death's list, but what they don't know is that I'm not really Death and I have no list. I'd probably have a bit of fun and ignore them and then come back. I'd think we'd both get a little laugh out of it, before I attack with my scythe. Of course, the only flaws in this plan is that I have to attack at night and would need a ride to the enemy camp, cause I'm only good for a five mile hike.

Maybe I can just be a super ninja the U.S. Armed Forces can call upon at time of need and you'd call me Snake Eyes. Not exactly like the G.I. Joe cartoon, cause I wouldn't dress in all black and wear that visor thing. More or less, my outfit would be in all white with a red cobra on my chest. Yeah, kinda like Storm Shadow, but Storm Shadow is a commie, and we don't like commies. So I'd just look like him yet you'd call me Snake Eyes. Unless you REALLY do want to call me Storm Shadow, at that point, I wouldn't mind. Just make sure I have alot of shuriken, or what I'd like to call ninja stars of death, because nothing strikes fear into the enemy like a shuriken to the head, or two. Endless pleas would go on and on, "Oh bloody hell, not another shuriken! Please for the love of God!" Swarms of enemy forces would turn themselves in and you'd know they're the enemy when you a shuriken lodged into their forehead. I believe I'd live up to the 'Shock and Awe' doctrine.

Until I hear back form you, I'll continue my training in the Bo Staff and sharpening my body into a lethal tool of destruction.

OK, so some of you geekier friends out there have already seen all of these, but to those of you with real lives, I've gathered from various sources some "first look" photos of some of the characters from the upcoming Stephen Sommers 80's toy/ comic book to mivie G.I. Joe and have added my thoughts on them. Take a look!

Snake Eyes looks like Snake Eyes (a la series 2 action figure)... I approve!

Scarlett - She looks pretty fly. I dig the red heads. Especially if they know karate. Let's hope she can act.

Duke - I'm not sold on Duke. He seems a bit young for the role. As you know, Duke is the G.I. Joe filed commander. He should be at least a good ten years older than the rest of the Joes.

Hawk - It's Dennis Quaid with a beret. I'm sure he'll do fine filling the shoes as General Hawk, the original G.I. Joe leader.

Rip Cord - But seriously... A Wayans Brother?

Breaker - Not terribly impressive. But was Breaker EVER terribly impressive?

Heavy Duty - Why did they pick this character? No one remembers Heavy Duty. They should have cast this guy as Roadblock. He looks more like Roadblock anyway.

And Now for The Cobras:

Destro - Borrrrrriiiing! He better wear the Destro face mask for longer than the finale.

The Baroness - It's Sienna Miller in a slinky leather outfit with glasses. Honestly, can you remember any of her performances other than her huge breakup with Jude Law.

Storm Shadow - This has got to be the biggest disappointment so far. The costume is completely un- ninja like and is all wrong. The tails are so hokey. He is supposed to be a traditional Ninja. This really bums me out.

Anyway, that's what I got. I don't know why they made all the Joes wear the black Ninja outfits. That should have been reserved for Snake Eyes and Scarlett because they're the martial artist characters. I hope this movie is at least mindlessly entertaining. Stephen Sommers is directing, The hack that brought you all the Brandon Fraser Mummy Movies, The Scorpion King and the monstrosity (and not in a good way) Van Helsing. All movies that I would rate as WAIT TILL DVD or worse WAIT TILL CABLE.

The one saving grace is that hired Larry Hama to help write it. For those of you who don't know because you're cool and not a dork like me, Larry Hama is like a god to me. Larry Hama wrote every single one of the G.I. Joe character file cards on the back of the G.I. Joe toys. He also wrote all of the G.I. Joe comic books for Marvel comics. Not to mention he really is a real American Hero having served in Vietnam. Not to mention he's Japanese American like Yours Truly. Also he was known to date tall blonde chicks and I think ended up marrying one putting him into Pat Morita Playa Pimp Status in my book. LOL

Nuevas fotos de los personajes de la adaptación de G.I. Joe han impactado la web directamente desde un sitio llamado What Would Tyler Durden Do (¡Nombre Maestro!).

My roommate (free blog plug, Bryan!) has been purchasing various LEGO sets over the past month or two, much to the chagrin of his wife (yes, I still live with them...temporarily!). I, too, have attempted to relive the much simpler times of my youth, most recently with the purchase of these bad boys.

Somewhere in my house I have a Ninja Turtles lunch box filled with my old G.I. Joe's, some of which are missing limbs due to intense battles. Snake Eyes was always my favorite, but unfortunately my original figure has two severed legs. Now I have the 25th anniversary figure which came with his arch enemy Storm Shadow. I'm not sure if I like the plastic they used to make the figures, and there are way too many movable parts. But I do feel inspired when I place them on my desk and let them watch me work.

I was a total G.I. Joe fanatic when I was growing up. Yes, I am a girl. (In my defense, I had a crush on Flint.)

The media's gotten their hands on some images of Snake Eyes from the upcoming movie. He's resident bad ass ninja. Ray Park, who played Darth Maul in Star Wars, is the celebrity behind the mask. I think he's the perfect fit for the role!

Check out the pictures after the jump.

¿Recuerdan la serie de G.I. Joe?

Joe live-action picture. Storm Shadow will be portrayed by Byung-Hun Lee, apparantly big in Korea but woefully unkown in Europe and surrounding continents. I doubt Lee is his real last name anyway.

The second casting is that of Shana "Scarlett" O'Hara, who will be portrayed by Rachel Nichols, relatively unknown due to her being in support roles most of the time. The most notable works being Alias & The Amityville Horror.
