When I first visit the site, I liked it. I also showed the site to couple of friends and they liked it as well. Viewzi: http://www.viewzi.com

It's not actually a search engine. They use search results from different sources and present the results in different views. It's very simple!

Search for keyword

Select the view

See the results

In contrast to Google & Yahoo, this site will display the results in multiple formats. At the moment there are 18 different views. Few of them are:

Celebrity Photo View
Web Screenshot View (Good for web designer & graphic designer)
Simple text view (same as Google/Yahoo but with site snap on mouse over)
Power Grid View
Google timeline view (the date/time the article/site was published/modified)
Video x3 view (videos from YouTube, blinkx and Veoh along with tagging)
Site information view (Good for search engine optimization & statistics)
Photo tag cloud (one of my favorite: tag cloud in 3D environment)
Photo view (photos from Flickr, Smugmug)
4 Sources views (Yahoo, Google, Ask, MSN)
Viewzi news view (News sources: CNN, The New York Times, REUTERS, USA Today, Yahoo)
Weather view (Results from: Yahoo News, weather.com, AccuWeather.com, Sunlight Labs)
Amazon book view
Everyday shopping view (Results from: eBay, Target, amazon.com, WalMart)
Album view
Recipe view (Results from: Simple Recipes, 101 Cookbooks, myrecepies, Epicurious)
Song view (You can listen to the audio/songs as well)
TechChrunch view

The web site use Flash so make sure you have Flash installed on your machine.

I believe this is another revolution as the future of the web will be all about views and how you present the information.

While we wait for the pundit's reaction, it's always fun to have a look through a speech to see what was siad, what was repeated, and on that basis wonder what we are expected to take away from Cameron's conference speech this afternoon. The bigger the word, the more popular in the speech it was. You can click through to Wordle for the full sized version.

Personally I thought this was a great speech - there was no yaa-boo politics but the digs at the Labour party were in place, there was a humble Cameron on display, but a certain righteous anger. Being Scottish the invocation of Thatcher will have not made Scotland an easier place to campaign (fact of life) but it could go down very well in England. That remains to be seen.

As to a lack of policies, well part of me thinks the strategy to see and discuss these is not 18 months before a General Election - after all look at the policies announced last year and where they ended up, so I'm happy with hearing about the moral core and broad strokes of the party, as opposed to fine nitty-gritty detail that can easily gum up the "sound bite debates" that would occur round them in the media.

So Jay's suggested there are 200 words that can improve your writing. Given that he's written most of this blog to date, I thought I'd work out exactly what words he's been using. And thanks to this clever little app at Wordle you can create a pretty little word cloud from the content within this blog (or indeed any other you choose). You can even paste a passage of copy into it and see it visually. Beware... it's addictive.

[caption id="attachment_791" align="alignleft" width="240" caption="Christian Kuhna, Prof. Dr. Joachim Niemeier (v. l.)"][/caption]

Community Tools (Blog, Chat, IM, Diskussions-Foren...)

From what I have seen there is an emerging trend out there in the web world that should have reader

From what I have seen there is an emerging trend out there in the web world that should have readers and consumers of web content up in arms. The problem lies between who the consumer of the content is. However, the issue is not an old one just a different way of using and abusing web content to achieve the same goal. Our culprit this time is not bold and underlined and linked text, or hidden blocks of keywords. It's worse, and has greater impacts on usability as well as readability. The culprit is what I call the "Glutton Tag Cloud". It is a glutton for 2 reasons that both cause consumers problems. First it eats up screen space with a bulging belly full of tags that in some cases reflect every word in the content as well as synonyms. The content is left to a sliver of space looking like jack sprat in the corner and stretched out to cause plenty of scrolling. One concession is that shorter lines do help scanning but excessively short lines also hurt reading. Then of course there the second issue of becoming meaningless. I would predict that if "Glutton Tag Clouds" continue to be out there Tags will soon go the way of the dinos. Extinct as a manner of by which producers can categorize their creations for others so that consumers can find them.

The reason issue number 2 is so important is based on that very word "important". When consumers look for content they are looking for content that addresses particular importance to a few key subjects. The "Glutton Tag Cloud" on the page sits there to say that everything in this page is important. The result of that will be that nothing will be considered important. So when nothing becomes important the ability to rank relevance of the content based on the important topics goes away. Once that happens The tag cloud will go away and another method of identifying importance or subject matter of content will show up to be exploited I guess.

I would have to think that if your content was that interesting it would not need the Glutton Tag Clouds to get it noticed. People would find it easily using the system that has been defined. Don't go from a content creator to an SEO optimized relayer of garbage. Keep it real and keep it fresh please.

Prompted my Michele Martin's Web 2.0 Wednesday task for this week, I decided to do a Wordle tag cloud of my blog.

Learning is the top word in my cloud, followed by connectivism. Think, information, and networks are all prominent. Growing and grow are both more prominent than build--an interesting observation after my post about whether learning grows or is built.

Although Michele's task was originally about personal branding, I was hoping to get a better grasp of the discussions about learning and our metaphors for it. Sometimes I just need to look at it a different way to start making the connections and seeing the patterns.

Here's a different version of the tag cloud, this time with just my post on learning and the comments (all 12 of them, at current count):

The discussion has been great, but I need some more time to process it all and figure out where I want to go next with these ideas. I'm not used to such deep philosophical discussions.

So I forgot to mention that I did indeed go to the dentist on Friday. It was pouring with rain, which kind of sucked, since I walk everywhere and don't own an umbrella or a waterproof coat, and I had a brief moment of panic when I couldn't work out where the place was. But it went fine. Also, it was really fast. Then again it was just the initial visit, so all she did was check the condition of my teeth. And that turns out to be a whole lot better than I thought. Only one of them needs to come out (and it's a wisdom tooth, and lots of people get those removed) and most of the teeth are generally OK.

I need some fillings. This is pencilled in for later this month. I also need one of my wisdom teeth extracted. This promises to be a whole lot of no fun, since it has to be done in a hospital. On the other hand, they'll probably give me painkillers, which'll be nice. And after that my teeth should be all fixed up.

I've been working on random programming stuff today. Here's a tag-cloud that I made for the book Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman:

The common phrase is “tag cloud”.

The common phrase is "tag cloud".

A tag cloud or word cloud (or weighted list in visual design) is a visual depiction of user-generated tags, or simply the word content of a site, used typically to describe the content of web sites. Tags are usually single words and are typically listed alphabetically, and the importance of a tag is shown with font size or color. Thus both finding a tag by alphabet and by popularity is possible. The tags are usually hyperlinks that lead to a collection of items that are associated with a tag. (link)

Now, the tag cloud is something that I don't really use, considering that I don't really have enough posts to generate any sort of meaningful cloud. Also, not to mention that tag clouds are one of these "Web 2.0" things, which I dislike for the name. Obviously, the irony is not lost that the syndication of this blog is via RSS, which is very "Web 2.0". But provided I don't have to use that phrase more than necessary, that'll be fine by me.

Now, I came across two tag clouds today which I think would look rather interesting if you put them side by side.

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="466" caption="A visual representation of the most used words in Obama's acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention."][/caption]

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="466" caption="A visual represenation of the most used words in McCain's acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention."][/caption]
Another small bit of information that's slipped into these by the BBC, is the speech length, and the word count. Apparently, Obama speaks quicker. Fancy that.
