October 19th, 1987 - some refer to as Black Monday (others refer to it as my birthday)...the market dropped about 1/3...then rose again over the next few days restoring the status quo = a little 'Detachment' movie preview.

Recently the market dropped dramatically and has bounced around since - now 'the Detachment movie' has been released.

Rapid change = the possibility of dramatic fear = panic, or ecstatic freedom meaning the release from the bondage of identification with anything. We live in a world where the bars are so far away (in most cases) that we don't realize we are in prison.

Can you imagine having everything you could possibly desire together with... the ability to 'let all of it go in an instant' without even a tiny sting? That's an aspect of True Freedom.

Detachment is 'living IN the world but not OF it'...why not have it all providing we are the masters and not the slaves to whatever ALL means to us. We are One with All that Is...that means Abundance, Love, Joy, Peace and Freedom...doesn't it seem kind of strange to deny What we Are in order to somehow qualify to 'get' What we Are?

17 Turkish troops were killed in clashes with Kurdish Workers Party (PKK) rebels on Friday. 15 soldiers were killed and 2 abducted (there bodies were later recovered) following a cross-border ambush by PKK rebels.

Thought, as most of us know, has a unique frequency and vibrates at the level of our focus. In the East, the thoughts most people have are called "Samskaras" or grooves in the mind...destined to repeat themselves on an endless loop projecting the same results with each cycle.

When our frustration with the discomfort of our repetitious living is slightly greater than our fear of change, we begin to change our focus and raise our perceptive frequencies. This has been the slow and painful path evolution has taken as we move (in our perception, since there is nowhere to move to within Oneness) toward Awakening to True Perception.

The Chakras represent frequencies of focused perception and most people oscillate between two or more of these levels. For example, Mozart was a musical genius - throat chakra, but physically weak - root chakra. His powerful focus dropped his focused frequency into reckless self indulgence when he was not creating musically.

"Seek first the Kingdom of Heaven..." means to focus our attention on the highest frequency or the True Perceptive connection within us...in this way we "...overcome the world" ...we control the illusions of lower perceptions and Awaken to the Oneness of All we Are in Truth.

Surveys are a great source of topics for blogs. A recent set of statistics by HireScores, a recruitment-related website, claims that Brits waste a third of their working day 'pretending' to be busy. Is that surprising? We all have procrastination strategies to put off difficult tasks or to avoid starting ones we cannot finish today. But 2 hours 20 minutes per day? And that is only the average. A whopping 32 per cent admit to wasting an average of 3 hours 15 minutes every day talking to colleagues and feigning work. That is nearly half of a typical working day.

And that, of course, is not counting all the time that they spend on work-related activities that are not actually needed: over-long meetings; meetings where they are only there to watch; reading emails copied to everyone in sight.

So why does nobody notice? Is it a failure of supervision or even lack of leadership? Primarily it is a failure, in many areas, to specify roles and outputs clearly, often accompanied by soft staffing levels. On the plus side, however, the survey did find that 40 per cent of workers stayed late at least once a week in order to finish a task. But then they would need to, wouldn't they?

Some excellent and important research has been done on microgeneration by a consortium of the Department of Business, Energy and Regulatory Reform as well as various large public and private organisations, under the chairmanship of Professor John Chesshire whose committee included some eminent experts. The ground work for the research was undertaken by Element Energy Limited, a low carbon consultancy and this report comprises the most accurate snapshot of the state of microgeneration in the United Kingdom today.

I should say that I have a great deal of time for Professor Chesshire. He is a past president of the Institute of Energy and does very important work for the Partnership for Energy Efficiency in Homes. He also was kind enough to write a review of my book, the Energy Age, for which I shall always be grateful.

The report is called “the Growth Potential for Microgeneration in England Wales and Scotland” and provides some compelling evidence about the need for microgeneration in terms of a low carbon economy. If the report’s optimistic scenarios about microgeneration prove true, then in 22 years time microgeneration would have done the equivalent of removing all emissions from all heavy goods vehicles and buses in the United Kingdom.

I will concentrate on the solar thermal aspects of the report, but reading the whole report is worthwhile and will provide a more accurate idea of the authors’ conclusions than I can summarise here. You can download it at http://www.berr.gov.uk/files/file46003.pdf

The starting point is the most accurate estimate of microgeneration technologies installed in the United Kingdom to date – around 98,000 installations. The authors found that most of these installations were solar thermal (described as solar water heating) systems, which account for around 91,000 installations. The remaining are heat pumps, combined heat and power systems, biomass boilers and small wind turbines and photovoltaic systems. Together these save around 30,000 tonnes of carbon each year.

They conclude that the poor government support of microgeneration (comprising of eleven policy measures spread over five Government Departments) has not been of sufficient scale to promote a mass uptake of microgeneration so far. The report concludes that capital grant programs (or subsidies) are a poor tool to encourage microgeneration take up and create a boom and bust potential which will be very damaging for the microgeneration industry.

They indicate that international experience suggests that it is probably better to create a subsidy program that relates to the energy savings (whether heat or electricity).

As far as the industry is concerned the authors emphasise the importance of certainty in the market and the need to provide investor and manufacturer confidence. This lack of certainty has been the largest single factor in my own personal experience that has hindered growth in the thermal solar market, so I find my own experiences coinciding with the wisdom of the authors.

Indeed, regular readers will have seen my ideas about this expressed on many occasions in these posts.

It seems that the government’s recent announced of very large potential targets for microgeneration (seven million homes with solar water heating) and similar targets announced in the Climate Change & Sustainability Act 2008 were intended to provide confidence for investment in microgeneration. It has not yet worked.

There are various scenarios set out in the report that relate to potential take up of microgeneration. Without proper support it is likely to grow slowly. With a sensible and economic system of support we could see over 40,000 solar systems being installed next year – just under half the total solar systems in place that have been installed in the past twenty years.

As a nation we are trapped between a rock and a hard place. The rock is that of climate change, and the hard place is that of increasing scarcity of fossil fuel which makes it become growingly expensive. Microgeneration has an essential part to play, and of all the microgeneration technologies none is more highly developed, more mature or cheaper to install than solar thermal.

Professor Chesshire and his colleagues have drawn a road map that shows the way to fewer emissions and more energy security and independence. It remains to be seen whether any Government can have the courage and the long term commitment to follow John Chesshire’s road map.

Brake lines cut, cars damaged at homes. Toronto police patrolled a midtown area overnight, after vandals cut brake lines on at least 10 cars parked at homes with Liberal election signs on their lawns.

"We're investigating. Officers are paying special attention to the designated area and we take this very seriously," Staff-Sgt. Shawn Meloche, from 53 Division, said last night. "This is a danger to life as well as to property. Regardless of the motivation – and there appears to be a connection (to the signs) – this is a public safety issue."

Affected residents live in the riding of St. Paul's, in a swath of the city around Eglinton Ave. between Bathurst St. and Mount Pleasant Rd., and had Carolyn Bennett signs on their property. Although Meloche confirmed 10 cases of vandalism last night, Liberal riding headquarters said the number was going up, reporting 14 by 9 p.m.

The cars were also damaged in other ways; some were scratched and keyed with L signs. Phone and cable lines of some homes were cut.

"There are two child seats in the back of my car," said Andrew Lane, chief financial officer for Bennett's campaign. "To cut the brake line on a car like that is just evil. Awful."

Added Lane, whose children are 6 months and 22 months: "You have to crawl under someone's car and cut the brake line, knowing that it could kill someone, or their whole family."

Lane discovered his brakes didn't work on his silver Saturn View as he tried to pull up at a stop sign near his home yesterday. He kept slamming the brakes and, in a "moment of terror," narrowly avoided slamming into a bus.

Later, the garage called to tell him it had been no accident. When Lane expressed disbelief, the mechanic told him: "Look, this is a big, heavy rubber hose and it's been cut through with a very sharp knife. You should phone the police."

Police later said Lane was not alone and asked if he had an election sign, telling him, "The Carolyn Bennett sign seems to be the one thing linking events."

"I'm just sick to my stomach about this," a shaken Bennett told the Toronto Star last night. She spent the day visiting the vandals' victims. "It is so upsetting. I've spent my life encouraging people to get involved in the democratic process and now it would appear they are targeted for doing so."

Brent Johnston, former chief fundraiser for the provincial Liberals, was backing his Volkswagen Golf slowly out of his driveway when alarms went off. He then discovered brake fluid in his driveway. When he called Volkswagen, they told him he wasn't the first to call, and to check his car for damage.

He, too, has two young children and shudders to think what might have happened if he had driven the car with a cut brake line.

"This isn't about party politics. Putting people's lives at risk is a whole different thing," said Johnston. "We're not taking the sign down. We won't be intimidated. But I am really disappointed this is happening in Canada. It's beyond comprehension."

Here's an interesting question...whatever I am intending in my life...what is the reason for this?

I was speaking with a gal yesterday about 'Essence' as it relates to the answer to this question. Essence to me is the 'reason' behind the people, places, things and circumstances we want to show up in our lives.

Its not about the thing...like a car or a home or even a relationship...its about the 'essence feeling' that shows up 'as a result of our intention showing up in our lives.

Its sort of like peeling the onion skins to reveal a 'not this-not that' scenario.
[caption id="attachment_978" align="alignright" width="200" caption="Stirling Castle © Andrew Smith"][/caption]

Back in November of 2007 the Scottish Parliament's economy, energy and tourism committee launched an inquiry into tourism, intended to find out if the target of increasing tourism revenues by 50 per cent by 2015 is realistic. In its written response to the inquiry, the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce claimed the target was set as a result of political ambition rather than a factual analysis. Since then, similar views have been expressed by those in the business.

I hope the recently released visitor numbers for Scotland's attractions managed by Historic Scotland aren't a precursor for the Scottish Government's other famous 50% growth target, which is to produce 50% of the country’s electricity from renewables by 2020. (Of course, I know the two are unrelated, but that 50% is still an interesting coincidence, and I can't help wondering if the same spin-doctor was advising them on the best number to announce).

This hasn't been the best of years for weather. Indeed, as I write, I reckon our first hit of frosty cars arrived three weeks early this year, because what I woke up to see this morning didn't happen until the end of the month last year. My perception this years - regardless of whatever numbers the weatherfolk throw at us - is of a cool but dry (ok, drier) summer than in recent years. And, I make that analysis on real things like the number of times I get soaked when I'm out, or feel the sun, and both have been relative strangers over the past months. I won't even bother going into the financial year, we all know how that has gone.

Historic Scotland tells of something around a 10% fall in the number of visitors to its attractions (there goes the 50% target if that continues), which it attributes to both the weather, and the various financial crises we have seen over the year. Over the summer season, which lasts from April to September, their 360 sites saw 1.9 million visitors, as compared to over 2.1 million last year. Their star performer is Edinburgh Castle, which saw a fall of 13% in its visitors this year, with many similar falls across their main attractions.

I'd have to admit I haven't helped those visitor number in recent (or this) years, as I visit Stirling Castle fairly often - it's both nearer and nicer than Edinburgh, as there are less of those pesky tourists mobbing it - but I don't pay to go in, and just enjoy the outside. It's a handy break in the trip home if you've been far north, and there's an excellent chip shop in the road just below the castle.

A few years ago we'd pulled up there and collected out fish supper, and were just about to sit there and tuck in when all hell let loose around as the Fire Service arrived and we were surrounded by those nice red fire engines. Turns out that the tenement above both is and the chip shop had burst into flames - nothing to do with the chip shop! - and none of us at street level had any idea of what was happening, since we couldn't see the roof, but those a few streets away could.

We weren't in the way, but were boxed in, so just carried on eating until they were finished.

In today’s Straits Times newspaper, MAS said it will review the way complicated investments ar

In today's Straits Times newspaper, MAS said it will review the way complicated investments are marketed and sold to investors. That will include risk rating, clearer product labelling and stronger suitability requirements.

MP Cynthia Phua also suggested such financial products should be graded and offered to investors who can fully understand the underlying risks.

OK, the above is what that has been printed in the newspapers. So, what is behind the scenes that the ordinary man in the street need to take note of? In www.baokong.wordpress.com, we explain what the layman needs to know:

Firstly, financial institutions are there to make a PROFIT- their FIRST priority is to MAKE MONEY, everything else is secondary. Take their 'customers first' marketing with a pinch of salt. If you do not buy investments and insist on leaving money in fix deposits, you can be assured you won't be their 'first rate' customers. If they tell the whole truth to customers, nobody would buy the products, and everyone will leave their money in fixed deposits or under their pillow.

So what these institutions will do is they will put in place a very good system of reporting to MAS that they have forms and brochures that clearly states the risk of each and every product (which comes in small print and SEVERAL pages), that they give AUDITED training to all their sales staff to ensure that they COMMUNICATE ALL RISKS to customers, and they make their sales staff acknowledge and SIGN on the training forms so that if there is any customer complaints, the institutions, by reasonable man's standards, have certain immunity as they can prove that by way of the above systems, they have done a reasonable man's standards in communicating the inherent risks to customers.

So this places the onus on the sales staff or bankers, who are given very high 'revenue targets' which they have to meet in order to keep their high paying jobs ( In banking, sales staff remuneration are tied to the products they sell - look out for Justice Bao Kong's future blogs, his servants will elaborate in greater detail how the bankers' remuneration works, and you will have a better idea why your bankers don't tell you the whole truth). These poor bankers are coerced to sign on forms provided by their financial institutions which require them 'to communicate the whole product risks, structure and other terms and conditions' clearly to customers and they will be LIABLE for any customer complaints of misrepresentation. These poor souls are facing a dilemma: If they tell the whole truth to customers, it is likely they will not get the sale, and thus they do not achieve their targets and they get fired. So, what naturally happens is that bankers will tell selective truths and run through quickly on the 'risks' area and cover them up with the potential of returns, etc such that they did communicate the 'inherent risks' to customers, albeit not clearly, and customers get the impression of the 'potential returns' but not registering the full risks involved due to the clever presentation by the sales staff. Thus, the turnover rate of bankers are extremely high: The only way these institutions can maintain their high revenue targets is to 'hire and fire'. Sales staff initially start off achieving their targets, and until a few months later, when their customers have no more money to buy investment products, they get fired and new bankers are hired and they bring in their portfolio of customers, sell products, no more money left to buy, bankers get fired, and the cycle goes on. Just ask any investor on the street how many bankers have they had within the same bank in the period of two years? 6 bankers? or 8? That explains it all.

In summary, when planning to do investments, always take responsibility to do research and speak to friends who have experience. The government can only do so much, the onus is on oneself to protect one's assets and investments. This is the world of capitalism, every man for himself, profits come before compassion. And this is why we created www.baokong.wordpress.com, to help the man in the street understand more and not be taken advantage by hungry capitalistic corporations.

Yesterday’s Business Herald featured a story about the Banking Ombudsman’s involvement in cases reclaiming frozen funds from ANZ tied up in ING funds.

The bank has paid out more than $200,000 to one elderly woman, one of a number of settlements the bank has reached with people who invested through ANZ financial advisors.

The story goes on to say ‘Financial planner Jeff Matthews of Spicers Wealth Management, said the adice ANZ gave was poor. “They were’t trying to solve someone’s [investment] problem, they were just pushing product.”

Finsec will be launching a major campaign to take on the banks’ sales targets that put pressure on staff to sell products, sometimes beyond what customers want or need. Watch this space. For the full Herald story, follow this link:

even for those with a little understanding of

Who we Are and why we are here.

Yet for those tied to the merry-go-round

of transient life, where every dream holds

the promise of threat, these times can feel

hopeless and frightening.

There is a gentleness, only a tiny grasp away

that comes with letting go. It’s that feeling,

a soft sigh of release, one may have when

they know their home team cannot catch up

...cannot possibly win.

Perhaps at no other moment in history we need

To give ourselves permission to surrender

Deeply to this sense of release...allowing what IS

To fill the vacuum with whatever it will.

Have we not all felt the awesome joy of detachment

When we let slip our stressful grip on reality, only

To find a sense of peace we had not known before...

yet enough to know Its Joy, Its sense of safety...

“Since they have been successful in exploding bombs near the heavily guarded relief camp, there is no guarantee that the explosions will not take place in other camps,” one refugee told PTI.

Axe Attack

The Times of India also reported that five houses were torched in Phirigia block in Kandhamal (Gochhapada police jurisdiction) on Sunday night.

Last Thursday (Sept. 25), some 700 people armed with axes, swords, and iron bars attacked a Missionaries of Charity house in Sukananda village in Kandhamal, reported Asia News agency.

“There was no one at home, because when the violence erupted against the Christians, we took our few belongings and moved to our house in Bhubaneswar,” Sister M. Suma told the agency. “We brought with us the tabernacle, the altar, and especially the Dalit and tribal girls whom we were sheltering.”

Late on Wednesday (Sept. 24), mobs burned about 30 houses and two prayer houses in Simanjodi village and 50 houses in Batingia village, reported The Indian Express newspaper.

In Rakingia village, an Orissa Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) team that had gone to clear roadblocks was attacked, forcing the accompanying police to open fire, added the newspaper.

“Two tribal people have reportedly been killed,” the daily reported. “Sources said tribals with bows and arrows launched an attack on the ODRAF.”

According to the All India Christian Council (AICC), at least 57 people have been killed, more than 18,000 injured and over 4,300 houses, 150 churches and 13 educational institutions destroyed since the Aug. 24 outbreak of violence in Orissa. Two Christian women were also gang-raped.

The violence, which later spread to at least 14 districts of Orissa, has left more than 50,000 people homeless.

The attacks began following the killing of a leader of the Hindu extremist Vishwa Hindu Parishad (World Hindu Council or VHP), Laxmanananda Saraswati, and four of his disciples on Aug. 23 in Kandhamal district. Maoists have claimed responsibility for the assassination, but the VHP has persisted in blaming local Christians.

According to media reports, Christians in Orissa retaliated in at least one incident. A man was killed in Raikia Block after “Dalit Christians of Gundhari village hurled bombs at the tribal-dominated village of Sirsapanga in the afternoon [of Sept. 24),” The Indian Express reported. “Sources said the deceased, Raghav Digal, a Dalit Hindu, was a government employee.”

‘Withdraw Federal Forces’

The leader of an influential tribal group believed to be instigating violence in Kandhamal demanded withdrawal of federal security personnel from the district as a “precondition” to stopping the attacks.

Yesterday Lambodar Kanhar, secretary of the Kandhamal Zilla Kui Samaj (Kui people group) Coordination Committee, was quoted by The Indian Express as saying that he was ready to give assurance that tribal people would not resort to violence if the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were taken out of the rural pockets of the district.

Kanhar accused the CRPF of having let loose “a reign of terror” on “innocent” tribal villagers.

The Global Council of Indian Christians’ Dr. Sajan K. George said Kanhar’s demand was an attempt to “complete ‘ethnic-cleansing’ of Christians.” A representative of the Christian Legal Association said Hindu extremist assailants were upset that federal forces were trying to prevent them from attacking Christians and their property.

At the same time, European Union (EU) representatives yesterday spoke to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh during the India-EU summit in France about the government’s failure to prevent a “massacre” of Christians in Orissa and Karnataka states.

According to the AICC, in the southern state of Karnataka at least 19 churches and 20 Christians have been attacked. At least four churches and four Christian schools had been vandalized in the north-central state of Madhya Pradesh, and four churches attacked in the southern state of Kerala. Two churches had also been damaged in the national capital, Delhi.

Singh yesterday made assurances that attacks on Christians would be stopped.

Christians from various denominations, along with people from other faiths, are holding a weeklong sit-in day and night at Jantar Mantar observatory in New Delhi that began on Friday (Sept. 26) to protest the lack of security. The demonstration demanding protection for minority targets in Orissa and other states will conclude with a motorbike rally on Thursday (Oct 2).

Christian leaders such as Dr. John Dayal, the Rev. Dr. Richard Howell, A.C. Michael and Jenis Francis are participating in the protest.

Targets, measured in expected outcomes, rather than actual measures are the world’s favourite way

Targets, measured in expected outcomes, rather than actual measures are the world’s favourite way to attempt to slow down the pace of climate change, and the targets are different in different parts of the world. The world’s most populous fastest growing nations have virtually no targets, and the world’s less populous but highly developed countries have the most targets.

I personally doubt whether targets are the right way of addressing global warming; there are two difficulties with targets. The first difficulty is that targets can be hit by a variety of “weapons” and what counts under the present system of targets is only whether the target is hit or not, rather than whether the weapon has made an effective hit.

The second problem is that targets are constructed by humans and not science; their construction involves all kinds of compromise and often having been constructed once are redesigned so as to be easier to hit, as though the form of hitting the target was more important than its substance.

Nevertheless, targets are the only game in town, when it comes to national policy of fighting climate change, so good or bad, that is all we have.

In Europe, top of the list of the nations that redesign targets to suit their own convenience rather than the purpose of the target itself is good old perfidious Albion. Albion wants targets on clean energy in new homes to be optional, rather than compulsory. Optional, rather than compulsory targets are no targets at all. There is simply no point in having optional targets, but this is what the United Kingdom has been lobbying hard for at the European Union.

Clearly the Government thinks that it is the United Kingdom’s interest to avoid expenditure on climate change measures, thereby making the country more competitive with its European partners, but if everyone adopted that position all targets and climate change measures would be optional and being expensive no one would adopt any measures to delay or stop global warming.

Now that would be a great victory for the exquisite civil servants who have protected their respective employers’ interests in the very short term, but a devastating defeat for all the people who live in the world, as it risks being irrevocably ruined for human habitation by the short term vision of those that have been elected to govern its nations.

These environmental scoundrels are aping the short term concepts of the worst excesses of the hedge fund spivs. Like the now failed city institutions we are speculating for short term gain, not with other people’s money but other people’s lives.

Gordon Brown and his cronies criticise bankers’ bonuses which are undeserved because they risked the long term survival of their employer by taking risks with money entrusted to their employers. Those risks failed in the end and so did the employer.

The politicians of the Government of the United Kingdom deserve the same criticism for the sepculations they take with climate change. They are attempting to water down the rather ineffective instruments that they have already agreed to use to fight climate change. The instruments may be weak but they are all that we have.

The United Kingdom is now lobbying for aviation to be excluded from the European Union’s target of 20% renewable energy by 2020 – just twelve years hence. If you take aviation out of the renewable energy target you reduce the target from 20% to 18.5%.

John Hutton’s DBERR claims that because the biofuels case is not yet decided it is best to take aviation out but of course DBERR speaks with a forked tongue.

What they mean, when you analyse what they say, is that we don’t need a target of 20% by 2020, a target of 18.5% will do just as well. Of course the fact that we do not understand the environmental and climate change consequences of using biofuel in aviation is irrelevant to a climate change target.

Mr Hutton’s boss, Gordon Brown, agreed 20%, not 18.5% and if you cannot get your head around what biofuel does then reduce emissions elsewhere until you figure out the biofuel position. When you do figure out the biofuel position you can take measures against aviation, but still count aviation’s emissions in the target unless, of course, you stop all aircraft from flying.

Odder still, Mr Hutton’s people have argued that nuclear and the as yet undiscovered “clean” coal should be classified as renewable energy; perhaps they have found some way that coal or uranium can somehow like the sun and the wind keep on regenerating itself after it is spent. Assuming that they have not discovered the undiscoverable, it rather gives the game away and exposes the perfidy being committed to the whole world.

They have also argued that renewable energy outside the United Kingdom should count towards UKtargets. If you read the recent renewable consultation paper you will see that the consultees are being directed to the concept that we may legitimately save emissions in the UK by building a wind farm or biomass plant in Africa, which of course does not save any emissions, merely prevent new emissions possibly arising.

Perfidious Albion! It will even use the very thing that threatens in the long term the survival of life on earth for short term gain, just like those bankers and hedge fund managers.
