I keep telling my self that its true
I can get over anything you want my love
But I cant get myself over you

Dont forget to remember me
And the love that used to be
I still remember you
I love you
In my heart lies a memory to tell the stars above
Dont forget to remember me my love

On my wall lies a photograph of you girl
Though I try to forget you somehow
Youre the mirror of my soul so take me out of my hole
Let me try to go on living right now

Don't forget to remember me

ARTE zeigt diese Sendung innerhalb des Themenschwerpunkts Summer of the 70s.

von "Ntrance" und "How Deep is Your Love" von "Take That".

Arif Mardin, the legendary producer/arranger whose career spanned landmark recordings from Aretha Franklin to the Bee Gees to Norah Jones, died yesterday (June 25) in New York. Mardin was 74 and had been suffering from pancreatic cancer for about a year. Born in 1932 into a prominent family in Istanbul, Mardin attended the London School of Economics, but it was a lucky meeting in 1956 in Turkey with Dizzy Gillespie and Quincy Jones that lead to his decision to attend the Berklee School of Music in Boston. He graduated from Berklee in 1961 and Nesuhi Ertegun, a fellow Turk whom he met at the Newport Jazz Festival, brought him to Atlantic Records two years later. At Atlantic, Mardin took his lessons about engineering and producing from a team of in-house giants that included Ahmet Ertegun, Jerry Wexler and Tom Dowd. Mardin originally wanted to be a big-band arranger, but he caught the pop bug in 1965, while co-producing the Rascals with Dowd. In the coming decades, he produced hits for a remarkable array of Atlantic artists, including Franklin, Average White Band, Phil Collins, Hall & Oates, Roberta Flack, Brook Benton and Dusty Springfield. In the mid-'70s, Mardin helped the Bee Gees redefine their sound and revive their career with the album "Main Course," which included the No. 1 hit "Jive Talkin'." Mardin showed great diversity, with successes ranging from Bette Midler's sweeping ballads "From a Distance" and "Wind Beneath My Wings" to Chaka Khan's funky "I Feel For You." He also produced memorable folk albums for John Prine, jazz albums for Eddie Harris, Herbie Mann and Charles Lloyd and country sets for Willie Nelson. Mardin remained at Atlantic until 2001, rising to senior VP. Shortly after retiring from the label, he re-emerged as co-VP/GM of EMI's revived Manhattan label under Blue Note chief Bruce Lundvall. It was at EMI that Mardin put the final crescendo on his career, co-producing Norah Jones' breakthrough Blue Note album "Come Away With Me." "Come Away With Me" won Grammys for album of the year and record of the year in 2003 and earned Mardin producer of the year honors. He also produced Jones' "Feels Like Home," which sold 1.02 million units in its debut week in February 2004. According to his official biography, Mardin collected close to 60 gold or platinum albums and won 12 Grammy Awards. In 1990, he was inducted into the Recording Academy's Hall of Fame. - Ken Schlager

this will be short as it is late and I'm extremely tired (although I have no idea why - I had a nice long sleep. maybe because work was really busy and all of my energy went into that? maybe! I didn't feel this tired until later on). okay, done rambling about that haha.

I booked my flights for going to and from Regina today, so it makes it official! I'm so so SO excited to go (like always). I'll be flying out of Kelowna on August 20th and coming back on August 28th, so staying just a little over a week. I'm going that time because then I can be there for Breanne's birthday like last year, and especially since it's her 19th I want to be there, even if I won't be able to get into the bar. YAAAY can't wait til August!!

hung out with Amanda last night which was nice. Ema is in Vancouver at the moment hence why she wasn't there. whenever Amanda and I get together with just the two of us, we seem to talk for ages and don't even realize how much time has passed, and also talk about everything! it's pretty cool. the main topic last night was about the whole thing with Ema and how annoying she's getting everyday. and also Ema wanting to talk to Amanda about "stuff" but wouldn't say what. I'm hoping that whatever it's about doesn't affect their friendship too much, though I've got a pretty good feeling I know what she wants to talk to her about. all I can really do is be there for the both of them the best I can right? I already listen to Amanda's rants or to whatever is bothering her at the time and same for Ema, but yeah I'm just hoping there won't be a lot of tension so that it makes it weird for the three of us together? I don't know, maybe I'm worrying about nothing?

oh and I realized that I should probably explain my titles cause they probably don't make a lot of sense. basically I make the title a certain lyric or one of the main lyrics of the song I'm listening to as I finish writing. just so that makes sense now for you. (the song I'm listening to at the moment is called Too Much Heaven by the Bee Gees).

anyways, bedtime!

In the seventh decade of the twentieth century, a cultural phenomenon swept this great country - nay, the world - faster than the common cold in a subway car full of sneezers. No, I'm not referring to wide lapels or polyester pants. I'm referring to disco. But before you scoff or tilt your shaggy-haired heads back in disgust, shall we revisit the antiquated sounds of disco's greatest golden hits through the lens of one today's most enchanting performers? Yes, we shall.

The Seven Inch Project has just released a limited edition vinyl pressing of two classic disco covers from Gnomonsong's own Rio En Medio, aka Danielle Stech-Homsy. From their site:

"The inspiration for these disco covers came to Danielle as she was promenading through the local West Indian grocery store in Flatbush, Brooklyn. It was late and Danielle was exhausted from work. As her dazed eyes drifted over bruised plantains she suddenly became aware of a song that was playing on the radio. For days the melody filled Danielle's head and obsessed her imagination. She had only caught a few words but managed to dig it up on the Internet..."Let this groove get you to move...It's alright...alright...a-a-al-right." Weeks later Danielle found herself in a Montreal hotel tapping the beat out on the desk in her room, trying to be as quiet as possible so as not to alert the staff to her nefarious recording activity. The song, one could say, had bewitched her. It had awakened a certain hitherto obscured spirit inside her that, once unleashed, had the power to change her, which it did, causing Danielle to abandon her current life in pursuit of a more dangerous personal freedom and aliveness that she had never known. That's when she understood DISCO - what must have moved so many people, as silly as it now seems to many of us - the magical hold it had on being Alive, struggling against the odds, and for no reason other than to feel something moving in your body and soul...

You would not be out of line in considering “Calculators” a loving tribute to the Brothe

You would not be out of line in considering "Calculators" a loving tribute to the Brothers Gibb, mixed with a tablespoonful of Blackstreet. To me, it belongs to the same family as some older songs on this blog like "Kathleen" or "I Do Little Things," i.e., genre exercises that allow for a lot of lyrical vulnerability. That being said, the aforementioned songs are far from the most popular songs I've posted, so perhaps this one will fall by the wayside as well.

It's either very old or very new, depending on how you figure. I yanked the roots of it a couple days ago from a songwriting notebook I was keeping in mid-2001. I had lived in Chicago less than a year... can you imagine? When I revisited it this week, I remembered the melody right away, but I also felt like the original lyrics were sort of all over the place. For example, one line read, "Askin what's your name to Mr. So-and-So." What does that even mean?

So on Friday, I got out my hacksaw and forced a more linear story that tries to play on a "calculator"'s ability to be a person or a device. The lyrics reveal that, despite the narrator's contempt for such calculators, he himself is the real numerologist... he just can't stop quantifying everything.

As far as the arrangement goes, well, I just kinda ran outta time. So you get piano, bass, drums, and a lead vocal. It's not bad. I figure that you're gonna like it or you're not, and a few extra layers of synths and voices wouldn't really change things anyway. Pragmatism dressed up as stoicism. Classy!

What can I say, I’m attracted to the one with the smooth “lines” and the awesome l

What can I say, I'm attracted to the one with the smooth "lines" and the awesome laughing and the craziness and just the overall persona that is perpetuated by such things. When I can sit and talk to the same person for so long and not mind the same joke repeated over and over again, it's all good. When I can be fine with not saying anything of importance to this person, it's even better-makes the conversation just all the better. I mean really. How would it not be any better?
So, I had to go and share the news. And I did so, on MySpace.

A certain person got a new MySpace, under the name of Douglas Jay Falcon (At least that's the name that was in the friend request). Of course, the message with it had to do with "FALCON PUNCH!!!!" or something of the like and then something about how muffins taste good-a running "joke" so to speak. So I added him, because I knew who it was (who ELSE would it be?).
Went and looked at the page, which is VERY well done (and if you're reading this-"Captain Falcon" I mean, ever, I mean that. I am so jealous of it). I got to be first comment, just because I'm cool that way. I have a feeling, though, that Captain Falcon will get a million friend requests from geeky teenagers and adults wanting to be friends with the infamous bounty hunter/racer. Anyway, I commented about how I loved the page. And then later was curious, so I had to go back and see the pictures-Captain Falcon has to have more than one picture. The catption to the one say "I know, I'm SEXY." I had to comment about how Captain Falcon is SO NOT sexy, and then I commented about how a certain other person (who fit the categories that I listed) was sexy. =D.

Sneaky as can be, that's me!

Anyway, that's my MySpace fiasco, that's not really a fiasco at all.
Then I was on Yahoo Messenger, talking to Scott. =D. He's cool. Really. We only get to talk on the weekends and stuff-cuz of the time change and all that stuff. Anyway, we don't really talk about much of anything of importance I guess you would say, but because I'm awesome, I don't find that a necessity to a good conversation. =D.
But anyway, Scott and I were talking it up, and it was just hilariouis.

And I found one of the coolest songs I think I will ever know. It's on youtube. And you can find it HERE. But it's hilarious!!! =D. It's 50 Cent and the BeeGees! And so 50 Cent is doing "In Da Club" and then the BeeGees are doing "Staying Alive" and it is so aweosme. It takes awhile, but it's good all the same.
Anyway, I downloaded it because I can, and so I just have to share with you all. Because I'm that nice, right?

So, back to the MySpace fiasco........
I think that I'm gonna call this person tonight....Just because I'm nice that way and all that. Anyway, I have no idea if this person has even seen the comment yet-I would think so because they are on the internet not all the time but enough to be more caught up on MySpace than I am. Anyway, I would like to know what's going on, but since I can't get on MySpace at school, I guess I'm sort of stuck, oh well.
I'll just call them tonight and try and test the waters.....=P. Cuz I'm so not good at that, so I get to make a fool of myself......YAY!

Though we've been busy carousing in NYC, the world of music still somehow manages to drive forward, producing some of the most exciting news in some time! A quick update of what we've missed while seeing Avenue Q, watching Arsenal play AC Milan at a sweet English pub in the East Village, watching a free taping of John Oliver's Comedy Central stand-up premiere (check it out-very very funny!), and generally having a ball.

Atmos, follow with the <strike>phere</strike> tour: How can you not love these guys? First, a free album that resurrects James Brown and his soul brothers and challenges all of their previous work. Second, Slug gives us a little Valentine's Day kiss by providing some loyal Onion readers to some sex advice. Finally, the dynasty duo have announced a North American tour, comprised mostly of two-night stands (these guys wouldn't love you and leave you right away). And on the opening night: Chuck D and Brother Ali! I say to you, these guys are cruising along "like they don't give a damn about the outcome."

The director of the film, whose previous works include Legally Blonde and Win a Date with Tad Hamilton! is pretty young. Hopefully he uses Mr. Murphy's music well.

And finally, from our Is this really necessary? file: There are some older songs that seem really fun to remix: The Bee Gees' Stayin' Alive was fun. Elvis' Viva Las Vegas and A Little Less Conversation are pretty fun to do this to. Or Mark Ronson's remix of Dylan's Most Likely You'll Go Your Way was a perfect example of taking a great old song and spicing it up just a little bit to fit today's radio playlist. But some songs just seem like they don't need remixing, and for some reason, the Rolling Stones' You Can't Always Get What You Want seems to fit into this category. I haven't listened, and refuse to, unless told by friends and colleagues that it is worthwhile. If you feel so inclined, listen. Then let me know.

Sorry to all of you for our linking absence. With the Betty not around, my sleep levels go down and therefore, the energy goes low. I try to eat as much porridge and pasta as I can but I've been crap on getting these done so apologies. Normal service is now resuming.

So to start, here's Betty on her new full-time jobarino!! Bloggin 'bout the Winehouse.

I almost always agree with Charlie Brooker, if without the scorn. I agree with this too. Instead, we should just have National Betty's Birthday Day.

Skins is bringing contemporary dance to teenagers. Apparently.

Sex is both good and healthy! Yippee!!

I honestly do not need to purchase this album to inform you that it will be unequivocally fantastic.

Slate asks a valuable question. Why steal valuable paintings? Why?

Another question: What is punk? Sasha Frere-Jones wonders.

Ellen Page is going to be in a horror film directed by Sam Raimi.

Time decides to list the most important movies ever made about race. I haven't been through it all but if Martin Lawrence appears...

Stereogum pays tribute to neo-psych indie-folk classic In An Aeroplane Over The Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel. If you don't own it, try it first.

Barack Obama won a Grammy last night. Is there anything he can't do? (hint hint America)

Walter Shapiro has no idea who will win. Clinton or Obama? Obama or Clinton? Who knows?

The New York Times lists the breakthrough performances of last year.
