After the rubbbish summer, we deserved something. And that came this weekend, with a bout of spectacular early autumn weather that had the good grace to include birds in it.

The good stuff started on Saturday morning when Paul Stevens came running over to say that he had a probable Honey Buzzard over his garden. Unfortunately, the various raptors circling over Firle village were too far for a definite ID by this stage, but certainly one or two of them kept their wings flat (not a moment of 'shallow-V'). The likelihood was further boosted later when we heard there had been a Honey reported going North over Seaford fifteen or twenty minutes before 'ours'. Paul also had a couple of Hobbies, some Yellow Wags and thousands of hirundines.

A picnic outing to Hope Gap that lunchtime wasn't bird-focused, but turned up a Whimbrel or few offshore. There were also a few warblers in the scrub, enough to start planning an early morning trip for the next day. Back in the Firle that afternoon, several Yellow Wagtails flew over the garden and the remarkable streams of martins and Swallows continued.

Early next morning I decided to go to Arlington, but the level crossing at Berwick was closed, so I diverted to the lower Cuckmere instead. Almost immediately upon stepping out of the car at the Golden Galleon, the birds were jumping out of the bushes in front of me.

Within a few minutes I had seen Lesser Whitethroats, Whinchats, Reed Warblers and Yellow Wagtails, all up close. The previous day's Wryneck on the Vanguard Way failed to show itself, but it didn't matter - there was so much else going on. A Kingfisher, a Snipe. Hirundines, Yellow Wags and Meadow Pipits were a constant presence in the air, with a couple of Grey Wagtails and a few Siskins too. It was busy all the way down to the Coastguard cottages, where a couple of Wheatears skimmed the beach. Back up the river bank it was relatively quiet, but another look on the western path produced more warblers Blackcaps and Willow Warblers too, and now Skylarks coming over and a big gathering of hirundines on the wires overlooking the Golden Galleon.

By the time Paul had joined me, a lot of birds had concentrated in a small area, just south of the Galleon. We just stood there and watched a single bush as it shook with birds - four or more Whinchats, three Lesser Whitethroats, a Garden Warbler and a Whitethroat, with Meadow Pipits teeming on the adjacent turf, and the air full of House and Sand Martins, as Yellow Wags and Siskins continued to move through. I could happily have sat there for the rest of the day.

However, after several hours of carrying a one-year-old on my back it was time to refuel, so we headed off. Later on that day, a walk to Alciston along the Old Coach Road saw a massive gathering of hirundines at Tilton, among which were two Hobbies low over our heads, and then on the return trip perhaps the closest Wheatear I have seen - an immaculate, strongly-marked bird just a couple of feet away, in front of us on the path, and close enough for the whole family to see every detail.

Even though I managed to dip on the scarcer stuff, it didn't matter. I didn't even flinch when Paul told me of the Ospreys he'd seen at Arlington later on that day (having bemoaned only that morning that he had no luck with them there).

It's just so good to experience a fall of birds and visible migration, especially when it coincides with great weather (so often it's the opposite). Roll on next weekend, I'm sure there's a lagging Honey Buzzard for me yet.

Days 63-65 - Hills of the Northeast, small but mighty

Lake George, where I wrote from last, was a tourist infested mess, but beautiful non-the-less. Upon leaving town I tried to take what I thought would be a shortcut to my next destination, Lake St. Catherine State Park. State route 18 was probably about 5 miles shorter, but the map, being flat as it is, did not demonstrate the 6-10% grades all along the road very accurately, and the last 15 of my 113 miles on the day were by far the most challenging. I made it to the park just as the sun went down and almost fell into my sleeping bag. Since I didn't want to pay $.50 to take a shower, being stingy as I am, I am now two days without bathing. This is nothing compared to the week I believe I spent in Oregon in such a state, but it wasn't nearly as hot and muggy there.

I got up at 5:00, the earliest of my entire trip, and set out for Claremont, NH, about 65 miles away. I was excited for a short day, and enjoyed the ride through the wooded and winding roads of Vermont. After a few minor hills I dropped down into Ludlow and visited the tourist bureau. Definitely a place to revisit, maybe in the winter time for some skiing and sitting in a hot tub with some northeastern snow-bunnies. The road to Claremont was mostly downhill, but the hill up to Hannah's grandmother's house was definitely not. It wouldn't have been so bad if I had actually gone up the right hill in the first place, but I didn't listen to directions well enough and ended up riding up to the very top of the other side of the mountain, at which point Hannah's Uncle Billy found me, I turned around and rode up the other side. This mountain was steep enough that I was forced to slalom up the road for a good portion, since going straight up was nearly impossible. It only took me about an hour to make it those four miles (both hills included) and then I sat down to a magnificent dinner prepared by the wonderful Sylvia Michaud. Two helpings of steamed beans, yellow rice, stuffing, nana's special meatloaf, cranberry chicken, bread and butter, plenty of water, wine, and beer, and two pieces of pecan pie with whipped cream and fresh blueberries filled me up just right and I slept in until 7:00 on a full stomach and an extremely comfortable bed.

Breakfast was just as delicious: eggs, bacon, cereal, orange juice, homemade donuts, coffee cake, and coffee got me set for the 50 miles to Tilton, where I worked a four hour shift and relaxed for a while. Tomorrow I think I will spend another day in New Hampshire at one of the State Parks nearby before moving on to Maine.

Politicians and ElectriCities PAC money

The following legislators accepted PAC money from ElectriCities when their constituents are being hit with HUGE RATE increases. They need to stand up and return the money or they appear to be supporting an overspending CEO who has botched refinancing of rates on $5 BILLION in debt costing us millions each month. Do the right thing and return the money.It does appear that Board Members ceased giving to the PAC at the end of 2007 and many staff people (even though they got GIGANTIC raises and salaries) lowered their contributions. Don't see where the big spender CEO Tilton gave in 2008 yet though. He prefers to keep his money I guess and just direct everyone else as to what to do.

Tilton Family

The emigration of this family to America is the old story of "three brothers." They came from the West of England, their names being Daniel, Jacob and Peter. They came to Massachusetts, Jacob settled in Newbury, Peter in Lynn, and Daniel came to Hampton. The late John Farmer, of Concord, says in his writings that, from these three brothers, it is believed sprung the many persons of the name, found in various parts of the United States.

Within the last few months, the public have had considerable knowledge of Theodore Tilton of New York. He is an able journalist, and lyceum lecturer, and lately has been known as the prosecuter of Rev. Henry Ward Beecher, charging him with the violation of the seventh commandment. Eighty-six days had passed in the trial, May 19, of this year, when this account of the Tilton families went to the printer, and then the lawyers began their arguments. Was he of the Tilton families in New England, and a relative of those in this town? Undoubtedly. It is believed that the descendants of Jacob, or Peter, went West as far as New York, and Theodore sprang from one of them.

Daniel Tilton was born in England in 1645. Probably he came to Hampton about or not long after 1665, for, Dec. 3, 1669, he there married Mehitable Sanborn. He was a farmer and blacksmith; also and Ensign in the Militia, an office of honor in those early times. The people were the loyal subjects of Charles II. of England.

Ensign Daniel Tilton died Feb. 10, 1714. Children:

Abigail, b. Oct. 28, 1670.

Mary, b. March 9, 1672, died young.

Samuel, b. Feb. 14, 1674.

Joseph, b. March 19, 1677.

Mary, b. May 25, 1679.

Daniel, b. Oct. 28, 1680.

David, b. Oct. 30, 1682.

Jethro, b. probably, in 1684.

Mehitable, b. Oct. 2, 1687.

Josiah, b. probably, in 1689.

This was the large family of ten children, according to what was often the case in early times. The divine command, "Be fruitful and multiply" was obeyed then.

The family that came to Raymond descended in the line of Jethro, named above. He had sons, Samuel and Josiah, also two daughters. Samuel, son of Jethro, had sons Samuel of Hampton Falls, Jethro, who settled in Epping where the name was long continued, Reuben, who came to Raymond, Ebenezer, who settled in Andover, and Daniel, who settled in Sanbornton. Names there long and may be now. Some held important offices. When Sanbornton was divided in 1869, and a new town constituted, it was named Tilton, in honor of one of that name who had lived there.

Besides the five sons of Samuel, named, there were five daughters; ten children again.

Dr. Joseph Tilton, of Exeter, who died in 1838, was born in Hampton Falls, and was a great-grandson of Daniel, whom we have mentioned as having come early to Hampton.

Reuben Tilton came here from Hampton Falls about 1771. His land was a mile north of the Baptist church, where J. Dudley Harriman lived, and Elbridge G. Brown now resides. It was then, far around, mostly a wilderness. He erected a log house, and with scanty means, but a strong heart, began to clear and cultivate the soil. There he lived till his death, May 17, 1826. He was an industrious, peaceable citizen, traits descending, by inheritance, to his children, so far as we have learned. He kept the Sabbath by attending public worship. For several of his last years, he was obliged to use crutches, and then he would walk over to the church, slowly making his way, sometimes accompanied by his aged wife, sitting down occasionally to rest.

Children of Reuben and Mary Tilton:

1. Josiah, b. Dec. 7, 1767, died Oct. 4, 1776.

2. Molly, b. March 10, 1770, lived and died at home.

3. Daniel, b. July 23, 1772, lived at the foot of Long Hill, then erected buildings beyond where Phineas Gilman now lives, and, after some years, returned to the first place. He was a deacon in the Congregational church, a lover of meetings and the instructions of the Sabbath. Many can recollect his quiet appearance, late in life, each Sabbath morning, walking to church, with an octavo Bible under his arm. His children were Mary, Stephen and John. He died Oct. 24, 1861.

4. Samuel, b. Sept. 15, 1774. He settled as farmer on the home place, a diligent worker, of good principles and a good life. He married, first, Susanna Dudley. Two sons, one dying young, and Joseph, first in town, then in Maine. Second, Anna Moulton, a native of Amesbury, Mass. Her brother Avery Moulton, and three sons, Abiel, Thomas P., and Albanus K., were Free Baptist ministers. She was a woman of sincere piety, had two sons, Reuben and Rufus. The first lives in Rochester, and Rufus has been a Methodist preacher for about 37 years. He now lives in Derry, having retired in part from active service. S. Tilton's third wife was Sarah Prescott. He died March 7, 1827.

5. Susannah, b. March 27, 1777.

6. Abigail, b. Oct. 23, 1779, died Dec. 23, same year.

7. Abigail, b. Nov. 12, 1780, was the first wife of Jesse Harriman, a woman of many excellences, who died Nov. 13, 1824. The children are named in the genealogy of the Harriman family.

8. Josiah, b. April 22, 1783. He was a Captain in the Militia, a kind-hearted citizen. His wife was Sarah Moulton, and their children were Oliver, on the home place; Hannah, wife of A. Bean Smith; J. Norris, killed by accident as will be mentioned in the Chapter on Casualties, and Mary Abbie, the first wife of Samuel B. Gove. Capt. Josiah Tilton died March 2, 1867.

Capt. Sewell D. Tilton is of a family of the name in Deerfield. How connected with those here given, if at all, has not been ascertained. Capt. Tilton is named as to his lineage on the Dearborn side, at the close of the genealogy of the Dearborn family.

Tuvo juicios por estafa, como aquel que tuvo con una señora que lo demandó por más de un millón de dólares por distorcionar exageradamente su testimonio de intento de suicidio y recabar así dinero de sus televidentes para la supuesta edificación de un hospital siquiátrico.

Después de su divorcio de su esposa Marte en 1993, Tilton se caso con la evangelista y ex reina de belleza Leigh Valentine. Valentine después se divorció de él dos años después, alegando constante abuso. Ella dijo que él alegaba ser el Papa, se levantaba en las noches diciendo que las ratas le estaban comiendo su cerebro, y durante su divorcio, ella manifestó las constantes paranoias y disfraces que usaba Tilton como bigotes postizos y peculas durante el primer año de matrimonio. Tilton después se casó por tercera vez con una mujer de Florida, Maria Rodriguez. Su figura como evangelista está desacreditada, aunque aún recibe dinero de un buen número de sus "fans" para su ministerio alicaído.

Who we are....

Today this is less metaphorical and more practical. I'll save all the metaphorical stuff for later. :) But I wanted to introduce those moving to Irving (as of now) so you can get a better idea of who we are.

Brad & Laura Tilton have been married almost 2 years. Laura works in an architecture firm in Bryan and Brad works for College Station ISD in the IT department. Both are looking for jobs in the metroplex and hope to move to Irving sometime before the end of the year. Brad & Laura have been at ComChurch since they got married and are very excited about creating community in Irving. They are gifted in hospitality and look forward to having people in their home.

David, Shelley, Samuel (7) and Jeremiah (3) Park have been at ComChurch for 3 years. David works for Atmos Energy in Rates & Regulatory Affairs. Shelley stays home with the boys. They enjoy getting to know new people, being involved in their boys activities and being involved in the community. Samuel is in a Dual Language program and will continue that once in Irving. Jeremiah is very active and loves to be outside.

The Parks close on their house in Irving (see map) on Nov. 8 and will move in the following week. Samuel will continue 2nd grade at Farine Elementary beginning the week after Thanksgiving.

We are looking for former ComChurchers who may be in the area and may be interested in getting together (no pressure). If we find enough, we may have Ross come up for one of his house tours to give us all an opportunity to get to know each other, worship and dream together.

The next several weeks are crazy and stressful, but we are getting more and more excited about what the Lord is doing and what He has planned for us as we venture out.
