Las películas de serie B, los monstruos japoneses y las invasiones marcianas de los años 50 eran una constante en la vida de Burton, llenando su imaginación de personajes y aventuras imposibles que tendrían su plasmación en su obra posterior. En 1979 Tim Burton entró en la Disney como animador para la película Todd y Toby. Según Burton, fue una tortura china. También participó en un proyecto que no se llevó a cabo, Trick or Treat, una producción sobre casas encantadas y Halloween que ni siquiera tenia guión. Fue una época tensa y desmoralizante para Burton, que se encontraba en un lugar donde lo mantenían pero donde no compartían su forma de ver la animación.

No obstante, había gente en la Disney que apreciaba su trabajo. Dos ejecutivos del estudio, Julie Hickson y Tom Wilhite, se fijaron en su talento de tal forma que, en 1982, Wilhite entregó 60.000 dólares a Burton para que rodase Vincent, corto basado en un poema de Burton. Desde hace muchos años, he tenido un superhéroe favorito, como casi todo el mundo. Por eso quiero rendir este pequeño homenaje a sus creadores y a aquellos que lo han acercado al gran público por medio de largometrajes.

Batman, el hombre murciélago, junto a su alter ego, Bruce Wayne, nació en 1939 de la mano de Bob Kane (24/X/1915 - 3/XI/1998 ) como Bird-Man. National Periodical Publications (NPP) estaba entusiasmada por el éxito de Superman, por lo que pronto pidió otro superhéroe con los calzoncillos por fuera. Bob Kane se puso manos a la obra y presentó este Bird-Man, cuyo éxito entre los productores fue nulo. Tampoco él estaba muy convencido del personaje. Llevaba un antifaz, unas alas rígidas y como color del traje, el rojo.

Para salir del atolladero Kane contactó con su compañero de estudios Bill Finger (8/II/1914 - 24/I/1974), quien ha sido reconocido muy posteriormente como cocreador del personaje de DC Batman. Lo primero que hizo fue oscurecerlo, cambió el rojo por el gris oscuro, el antifaz por la capucha de murciélago y las alas por la mítica capa. Batman había nacido. Y este sí que gustó a los de la NPP. Kane y Finger prepararon la primera historieta ("El extraño caso del sindicato químico") que sería publicada en el número 27 de su publicación Detective Comics (DC).

A pesar de la más que inestimable aportación de Finger, fue Kane quien se llevó todo el mérito. No obstante colaboraron durante algún tiempo.
Batman no ha dejado de "funcionar" hasta la fecha, siendo muchos los guionistas y dibujantes que participaron en el desarrollo de sus cómics e historietas. Pero uno es, por el contexto actual, destacable sobre los demás: Frank Miller.
Frank Miller (27/I/1957) escribió dos historias de éxito rotundo para Batman: "The Dark Knight Returns" (1986) y "Año Uno" (1988). La primera narra el regreso de Bruce Wayne como Batman tras una década de inactividad y, la otra cuenta los inicios de Batman a los ojos del autor. Parece que la última película estrenada, Batman Begins, está basada en esta "Año Uno".

A causa del atronador éxito del personaje de la noche, surgió la conocida serie de televisión de los sesenta en la que Adam West desarrollaba el papel de Batman. En 1966 se estrenó la película basada en la serie con el mismo protagonista.

Tuvieron que pasar muchos años para que en 1989, Tim Burton escribiera y dirigiera una nueva versión cinematográfica, Batman, y su secuela, Batman Returns, en el 92. En estas ocasiones fue Michael Keaton quien se enfundó el traje negro, y sus compañeros de reparto fueron Jack Nicholson (Joker), Michael Gough (Alfred), Pat Hingle (comisionado Gordon), Kim Basinger (Vicki Vale), Danny Debito (Pingüino) y Michelle Pfeiffer (Catwoman).

En 1995 Joel Schumacher dirigió Batman Forever, cuyo reparto estaba encabezado por Val Kilmer como Batman, Tommy Lee Jones (Dos Caras), Jim Carrey (Acertijo), Nicole Kidman (Dra. Chase Meridian), Chris O'Donnell (Robin) y Drew Barrymore (Sugar). Desde mi punto de vista esta película es un error de principio a fin, pero me parece aún peor la siguiente entrga, Batman & Robin, del mismo director, pero cambiando de nuevo a los intérpretes: George Clooney (Batman), Chris O'donell (Robin), Arnold Schwarzenegger (Mr. Freeze), Uma Thurman (Hiedra Venenosa), Alicia Silverstone (Batgirl) y Elle MacPherson (Bane).
Como se puede apreciar, en todos los casos el reparto es de lo mejorcito de Hollywood, salvo contadas excepciones. Además, los únicos fieles a estas cuatro entregas de la saga de Batman son los intérpretes de los personajes Alfred (Michael Gough), el mayordomo de la familia Wayne desde hace décadas y único conocedor de la doble identidad del millonario, y el Comisioinado Gordon (Pat Hingle), un policía que se mantiene fiel a sus principios y a la legalidad y único contacto entre la ciudad de Gotham y Batman.

Estrenada en 2005 y dirigida por Christopher Nolan, posiblemente basada en una de las historias de Frank Miller, Batman Begins retoma la imagen de Batman para la gran pantalla. Dicen los críticos que es posiblemente la mejor adaptación al cine del superhéroe de negro. En esta ocasión el papel principal es interpretado por Christian Bale y Alfred pasa a ser un ya viejo Michael Caine. Liam Neeson encarna a Ra's Al Ghul y Katie Holmes a Rachel Dawes. El joven James Gordon (unos 40 años en esta entrega) es Gary Oldman, e irá ayundando a Batman a destapar la corrupción que corroe la ciudad de Gotham antes de llegar al puesto de Comisionado (Comisario). En esta versión, se explica el nacimiento de Batman y como es entrenado por R'as Al Ghul, antes de saber que es un supervillano. Otros grandes actores participan también en el filme, como Morgan Freeman, Ken Watanabe o Cillian Murphy, en los respectivos papeles de Lucius Fox, el inventor del Batmóvil y de la coraza antibalas del traje de Batman, el falso Ra's Al Ghul y el Dr. Jonathan Crane.

El 13 de agosto se estrena en España la última entrega, The Dark Knight, dirigida también por Christopher Nolan. Ha sido escrita por el mismo director y por su hermano, Jonathan Nolan. En el papel de Batman, Christian Bale, en el del Joker, el fallecido Health Ledger.

Helena Bonham Carter nació el 26 de mayo de 1966 en Golders Green –Londres-.  Tataranieta del primer ministro británico H.H. Asquit y sobrina del director Anthony Asquit, Helena procede de padre banquero y madre psicoterapeuta de origen español. Ambos progenitores sufrieron diversas enfermedades cuando Helena era una adolescente, su padre quedo paralítico y su madre sufrió un colapso nervioso, tales sucesos marcaron una etapa dolorosa en su vida. También tiene dos hermanos, Edward y Tom.

Después de estar en televisión, Helena debutó en cine a los 20 años con la película "Una habitación con vistas", del director James Ivory quien la adaptó con un relato del escritor E. M. Foster.

Posteriormente, participó en diversas adaptaciones fílmicas como: "Donde los ángeles no se aventuran" (1991) de Charles Sturridge, o "Regreso a Howards End"  (1992) con  James Ivory.

Talvez seja por causa do Robert Downey Jr. e sua inegável fotogenia além do talento como ator (que ele inegavelmente tem) muito bem utilizados ao longo do filme.

Pode ser também por causa do Jeff Bridges. Ao contrário do que fizeram com Kevin Spacey, Bridges tem seus recursos de atuação realmente utilizados pela direção e fica bem acima da média dos vilões do gênero.

Um outro motivo é a dramaturgia em si, já que o grande investimento artistico do filme é com o conflito entre as personagens utilizando-se do bom elenco reunido aqui. Botar em cena Robert Downey Jr. e Jeff Bridges e vermos que realmente há uma relação protagonista/antagonista com força sem, contudo, menosprezar o espectador é algo raro em filmes desse gênero.

Ainda assim, não acho que vi uma grande adaptação de quadrinhos para o cinema. Algo está fora ainda, as cenas de ação não despertam um algo a mais e parece sempre que os filmes não captaram a especificidade das histórias em quadrinhos. Ainda não se tentou uma adaptação de fato da experiência das HQs, apenas uma transposição das personagens de forma naturalista na tela grande.

Nesse sentido as antigas adaptações do Superman de Richard Donner e o Batman de Tim Burton estão à frente. Entretanto, é no Indiana Jones de Spielberg que vejo uma via interessante para se adaptar HQs para o cinema.

Sweeney Todd nos invita a comulgar con los aspectos más horribles de la naturaleza humana. Pero nótese el binomio horror-humanidad: a fin de cuentas, el señor Todd llora un amor perdido, y, por eso, corta las gargantas de sus víctimas en cuanto se sientan en su silla de barbero, y entonces corre la sangre –de consistencia y color inusuales para demostrar que aquí no hablamos de gore, sino de arte-, en abundancia, a borbotones, que manan acompasados con algunas de las canciones más hermosas y perturbadoras nacidas en el seno del teatro musical y empapan así la que quizá sea la mejor película de Tim Burton desde Ed Wood. Y es tanta la conexión entre el tema, los personajes y la atmósfera de esas composiciones casi operísticas de Stephen Sondheim y la sensibilidad artística de Burton, que el musical más sangriento jamás creado bien podría haber sido escrito por el cineasta. De hecho, transpira sus obsesiones personales, protagonizadas, como este relato, por vengativos nocturnos –como Batman-, outsiders excéntricos que crean sus propias reglas, y a menudo perecen por ellas –como todos los personajes encarnados por Depp para Burton-, en un mundo en el que los muertos interactúan con los vivos –Bitelchús, La novia cadáver-.

Lo que pasa es que Burton nunca antes había dado tanto miedo. Sweeney Todd es, tanto como un musical, una película de terror, cruel en sus efectos y radical en su misantropía. Burton se niega a ofrecernos consuelo sentimental, porque, en este mundo grandguignolesco –matizado como su modelo por Dickens y por Brecht-, toda posibilidad de justicia ha sido reemplazada por un poder arbitrario, por un lado, y una furia justiciera demente, por otro. Y cuando el malvado y magnético Todd, vástago de Eduardo Manostijeras, enamorado de sus propios dedos metálicos, nos esputa a la cara la sangre de sus víctimas, comprendemos que es un hombre tan centrado en la muerte que ha perdido contacto con la vida, que la venganza sólo conlleva destrucción, y que esta película es, no sólo la más impactante relectura que Hollywood ha hecho de Broadway en los últimos años, sino la única que triunfa en lo musical y lo fílmico.

Para amantes del original con oído tolerante

La idea llevaba tanto tiempo palpitando en el aire que el Sweeney Todd, de Sondheim, remezclado (o condensado) por Tim Burton más que una cinta esperada era algo casi inevitable. Como una catástrofe. O una catarsis. Aunque, finalmente, no sea ninguna de las dos cosas. Un amigo de este crítico lo sintetizó muy bien: ¿Verdad que está muy bien, a pesar de lo mal que está? Un servidor salió de la proyección fascinado, pero incapaz de discernir si el suministro de placer era atribuible a Burton o al fulgor del musical de Sondheim, que pierde aquí su elemento vertebrador (el coro posmortem de The Ballad of Sweeney Todd) y algunas de sus artistas más sórdidas, como la primera aparición de la mendiga (con su oferta venérea) o el soliloquio penitencial del juez Turpin que en su día homenajeó/plagió Alan Menken en El Jorobado de Notre Dame (1996).

Tim Burton en definitiva, he hecho su Sweeney Todd, con unos títulos de crédito que funcionan a la vez como autoguiño y como mensaje desencriptado: la historia del barbero asesino y la pastelera mugrienta ilustra, a su modo, la superación de la lucha de clases a través de la emulación grandguinolesca de la estructura profunda del capitalismo. No hay nada que objetar a sus apuestas de reparte, aunque el recuerdo de la teatral Angela Lansbury subraye que se ha perdido bastante humor por el camino.

Lo mejor: el placer que transmiten todos los implicados.

Lo peor: que, en el fondo, sea mucho menos que su modo teatral.

TM: Somos de distintas partes del país, pero existe una especie de tendencia que conecta a los raritos del extrarradio, ¿a que sí?

JD: Sip.

TB: Las historias que nos daban miedo de pequeños.

JD: Mr. Green Jeans… [personaje de Captain Kangaroo, show infantil norteamericano de los años 60]

TB: O ver a Humphery Bogart haciendo un papel maléfico. Sólo hizo una película de terror y…

JD: Los dos lo sabíamos.

TB: El retorno del Dr.X. Cuando algo así sale en una conversación, te das cuenta. Sí, perfecto. Las cosas que nunca se comentan en las conversaciones de mucha gente salen mucho en las nuestras.

JD: Hablamos en una especie de taquigrafía.

TB: No literalmente. Nos referimos a cosas que no tienen ningún sentido para la gente normal.

JD: Una vez, Tim y yo estábamos hablando antes del rodaje. Después, llega uno enseguida y viene con cara de alucinado. Dice “Os he visto a ti y a Tim hablar de la escena durante los últimos quince minutos”. “¿Y…?”. Y responde: “No entendía una puñetera palabra de lo que decíais”.

TB: Creo que eso lo resume todo.

JD: No creo que hayamos discutido jamás-

TB: No lo creo. Ha habido divergencias y una visión distinta sobre ciertos aspectos.

JD: Pero incluso en ese tipo de situación, Tim simplemente dice: “Vale, hazlo como tú quieres y luego hazlo de la otra forma”.

TB: Normalmente, siempre estamos de acuerdo. Por ejemplo, en Sweeney Todd, Johnny dijo: “Hay una cosa que no puedo hacer. No puedo llevar al personaje de Anthony al hotel”.

JD: Puse un enorme sigo de interrogación en la página del guión.

TB: también cuando abrí el guión en esa misma página vi que ya lo había tachado.

JD: Tim ha tenido que pelearse mucho para que yo esté en sus películas.

TB: Siempre nos vamos a tener que pelear. Tenemos que pelear para que se haga, tenemos que pelear… Pero curiosamente, y contra todo pronóstico, Sweeney Todd no costó tanto. Tendrían que haber corrido colina abajo. Un musical para mayores de edad que tiene como protagonista a alguien del que nadie sabe si canta. Dios. Tiene que haber mucha confianza para respaldar un proyecto así. Y es increíble cuando pasa. Que confíen en ti. Da mucha energía y confianza en uno mismo. Te hace sentir bien.

JD: También hace que quieras hacer un buen trabajo por ellos.

TB: Claro. Siempre he utilizado una analogía deportiva para describir la otra cara de la moneda. Eres un atleta que se está preparando para la gran carrera; llegan, te echan toda la mierda encima, te joden vivo y luego te dicen: “vale, ahora a correr”. Y tú, intentando quitarte esa mierda de encima justo antes de hacer tu gran actuación. Pasa a menudo. Apostamos por ti, no importa que acabemos de romperte las piernas. Pero si fuera fácil, no tendrías la sensación de estar rodando una película. Hacer películas tiene que ser complicado.

JD: Siempre está ese momento en toda película en el que simplemente piensas: “Vale, este es el momento. Estoy a punto de darme un ostión, igual es mejor que me deje y vea lo que pasa”. Eso es lo que me pasó cuando empecé a cantar las canciones por primera vez. Me sentía como un idiota. Era una de esas veces en las que más expuesto estaba, una de las cosas más raras que he hecho nunca. Con 43 años, era la primera vez que cantaba todo el rato.

TB: Hice castings a otras personas y acabé destrozado y exhausto. Me sentía como si hiciera pruebas para una película porno. Tener a gente que viniera a las pruebas a cantar como si entraran y se quitaran la ropa. Estás así de expuesto. Me chocó.

JD: Tal vez por eso yo ya me he casado dos veces con la mujer de Tim. En La novia cadáver, Helena era el cadáver, y en Sweeney Todd…

TM: ¿Qué eres? Una especie de… ¿cómo se llama? ¿Poígamo? ¿No serás mormón?

JD: ¿No te lo había dicho antes? Mi nombre real es Osmond.

Los blockbusters son así. Cansinos en cuanto a información que muestran al público. Goteo tras goteo. Al final uno no sabe a que carta quedarse.

Si el año pasado la peña estaba que no cagaba con saber si Venom saldría en Spider-man 3 o qué aspecto tendría, ahora le toca el turno a uno de los villanos que puede salir en la secuela de Batman dirigida por Christopher Nolan.

Hablamos de Dos Caras. Ya en la primera entrega nos mostraron que dos villanos pueden coexistir sin que la historia se resienta (tambien lo demostró Burton en Batman Vuelve) con Ra´s al Gul y el Espantapajaros. Siendo el segundo un villano secundario eso sí. Así que es posible que en Dark Knight pueda ocurrir lo mismo con el personaje que nos ocupa. O igual la duración de la película puede que dar minutos a él y al Joker por igual. A saber.

De momento veamos una foto que puede mostrar el aspecto que tenga Dos Caras en la pantalla grande. Aunque más de uno puede apostar sus cuartos a que se trate de un fake, algo muy común en estos tiempos. Sólo el tiempo lo dirá. De todas maneras dicho villano mostraría un rostro inmejorable, superior al que nos enseñó Tommy Lee Jones en Batman Forever.

Por otra parte (aquí podemos pensar si la foto antes expuesta se puede tratar o no de un fake. Yo apostaría a que tiene muchas posiblidades de serlo) en el último trailer de Dark Knight ya nos han dejado caer que se podía ver a Dos Caras. Bueno, ver lo que se dice ver es mucho decir. Más bien intuir. Aquí se puede ver esa imagen, porque en el trailer dura un segundo a lo sumo.

Christ, Tim Burton's gone down the pan recently, hasn't he?

After the fantastic Ed Wood and the ridiculously enjoyable Mars Attack, he went crazy on the remakes, failing to recreate Planet of the Apes and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with any flair and making the more original Sleepy Hollow and Big Fish to a universal 'so what?'

Now he's remade a musical that nobody had seen in the first place. It also got an indifferent response from the critics. It doesn't get a response from me at all, as it happens. It gets a deep, heavy snore. One hour and ten minutes in, I fell into a fantastic sleep and upon waking, it had ended. But what was the reason for my lapse into unconsciousness? Why did I plop into slumber? How could the work of this commercial auteur fail to inspire me?

If you haven't seen it, you won't know that half an hour of the film is devoted to Johnny Depp doing a sixth form impression of Bowie whilst singing the same lines over and over and over again. He sings to his razor blades that they are 'his friends'. 'His friends'. They are 'his friends'. Instrumentation. 'They're my friends'. 'His friends'. It never bloody ends! Honestly, the amount of time devoted to this section almost drove me to a monitor-smashing incident. Add the occasional intrusion of Bonham Carter doing her best Rada-actress-landed-in-Walford accent and fists become clenched and teeth get themselves gritted. It stinks.

Also repeated until it bores into your head is a song where the word 'beeeautiful' features a billion times. 'Oh, she's beeeautiful' the young lad sings, until you've bitten your bottom lip off. 'Beeeeautiful!'.

You just want it to end suddenly.

Even the bit with Sacha Baron Cohen fails to amuse. He arrives in the midst of heavy, intoxicating boredom, sings a bit whilst wearing tight trousers, then dies as quickly as he arrives. Even the bit where he gets his throat slit wide open is dull. The whole thing is as BORING AS FUCK.
