Abaixo as letras clássicas! Viça a formatação moderna!

I have learned a very important and costly ($145 so far) lesson: search software/application revie

I have learned a very important and costly ($145 so far) lesson: search software/application reviews before downloading/installing such things on your computer.

I teach writing lessons online, and one of my students sends me emails using the free version of Incredimail. Because I work with kids online, it looked like a great idea for embellishing emails and making the lessons more fun. The premium version was only $30, so as a business expense to get the full program without ads, I thought, why not? Of course after a couple weeks, I wanted more pictures and animations, so I purchased the gold gallery for another $40. (I know, I know, this has "sucker" written all over it.)

The Gold Gallery never worked. Every time I tried to access it, I just kept getting invited to purchase the gallery again. I spent 3 weeks with at least 3 different tech support people all running me through the same diagnostics. Finally, one tech sent me an email that said that the problem was Firefox3 and that they were coming out with a fix for that shortly. Actually, this was happening before I upgraded to Firefox3, but whatever...

In the meantime, my computer slowly started going insane. First my print spooler disappeared and I couldn't access any printers over my home network. So I had to delete all the printers, but I don't know how to set up the network again - an awesome friend had done it for me, but then moved to India for some crazy reason (probably because being my personal IT guru doesn't pay that well). (ok, ok, it's was all about obeying God, not me.)

Next I lost access to certain websites that I could access just fine before. Because I know only enough to function on a daily basis, these types of problems mystify me and drive me to distraction. It takes so much of my brain power to figure out things in the labyrinth of a computers innards, I cannot think about anything else at the same time. My stress level steadily rose as "Cordelia" continued to manifest more and more maniacal behaviors.

The kicker was when Times New Roman disappeared. People could send me emails and documents in TNR, but I couldn't see what they wrote unless I hit reply and changed the font to anything else. My awesome friend helped me find info about garbled text, but none of the fixes in the font files helped. As far as my font files were concerned, TNR was there in full form fine and dandy. To work around it, I just avoided TNR, but it would mock me everytime I edited a paper and TNR was the default for making comments. I'd be typing away only to look up and see nothing there! aaauuuuuggggghhh!!!

When I switched back solely to Outlook for drafting emails, they embedded themselves in my inbox and told me I didn't have authority to send them when I hit send. A host of other "unspecified errors" started popping up as well, and I knew it was time for professional help.

Thankfully, a local computer repair fellow became my knight in shining armor and my new best friend. I went in with my list of freaky anomalies, and he confirmed my suspicions about Incredimail. Cordelia needed a complete lobotomy. He gave me perfect directions on how to back up my computer and even put me forward in his queue so I wouldn't get so far behind on my student emails. Cordelia was back in my lap in less than 30 hours! It's taken me another 30 hours and counting, though, to get her rockin' and rollin' again with all the downloads, passwords, and configurations one must execute!

Now the really sucky part of Incredimail is that I have voiced my concerns, and then my complaints, and finally my requests for a refund. I am not happy with the product and want my money back. I have yet to achieve that. All I get are kind responses of their sincere desire to help me fix the problem, but it'll be a mosquito-less day in MN before I ever put Incredimail on my computer again!

Gmail has got new mail loading interface, while signing in to gmail account, unlike earlier boring style of gmail which was just a text based page with slower loading time. Now it gives more user friendly interface with a progress bar. This new promising interface certainly loads faster; big difference can be seen by dialup users, while broadband users would not see much difference in speed. Using google’s email service has always been a awesome experience. Changing its loading interface page google has come 1 step forward in better user experience.

Although gmail is still in its beta stages, but with major enhancements like this users now can expect to see more surprising features.

Times New Roman.

Cool.

Times New Roman!!! Mannomann

Geht schneller...

The word of the day is ‘gambit,’ meaning a trick or gimmick or the act of tricking somebody. Tod

The word of the day is ‘gambit,’ meaning a trick or gimmick or the act of tricking somebody. Today was my first day of attempting to refrain from using contractions in everyday speech. I failed miserably. For at least a few days or so, I am going to have to think about everything before I say it in order to make sure I do not use any.

The holidays are Cinco De Mayo, National Hoagie Day, and Oyster Day. What fun.

The number of the day is twenty-two and the color of the day is Prussian blue.

I finished the biography titled Abraham Lincoln and started on a book called Sickened, a memoir of Julie Gregory, who suffered with MBPS during her childhood and teenage years. Proxy, as it is sometimes shortened to, is a mental disorder in which a primary caretaker, most often a mother, who purposely causes illness in her child in order to receive attention from doctors and nurses.

I am not very far in this book, but am already horrified by the events that took place during Julie Gregory’s childhood. I feel very lucky for myself, reading it, of how unlike Julie’s mother my own is. Just as the title suggests, this book is indeed sickening.

I saw somebody with a Shakespeare Hates Emo Poems shirt from Threadless today. I have sort of become obsessed with scoping out Threadless wearers. If I were one hundred twenty times more outgoing and if he had not been talking to a group of his friends, I may have said something to him. Like, you know, "Threadless shirt, eh?" and given him the thumbs-up sign. But, alas, I am not and therefore did not do so. Perhaps in another life.

Yum, lemon poppyseed cupcakes. My sister made some and I am going to convince her to allow me to eat one once I finish this.

In English we are going to start on a short story project. Hooray, something that could actually be fun! It is supposed to be four pages, double spaces, size eleven or twelve in Times New Roman. I have no ideas yet. What I usually do when I am writing is just sit down at the keyboard and wing it.

Also in English- we are having a vocabulary quiz on Wednesday! Hooray, I love vocabulary quizzes.

"My, the wonders of the world. How wonderful they are."

"Someday I wish they would find Waldo already and give the Trix rabbit his cereal."

"I never meant to, I just lost track of time and never found it."

Groucho Marx quotes, because he is awesome:

"I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book."

"I must confess, I was born at a very early age."

"I once shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got in my pajamas, I’ll never know."

---

So there you have it, folks, the post of the day and the only one that will ever be posted by me on May fifth, 2008.

P.S. Apparently, we are having spaghetti for dinner.

FANTASIA OU DECORATIVAS - Traços Irregulares e Estilizados - EX: Algerian D, Ballon.

There are three fonts I wish to single out for rant. Out of the three, two are hard to read after a while; the third is quite readable. However, they all have one major problem: overuse.

Now, Times New Roman is excusable, if a little boring. It is a very nice font. However, where it really suffers is when it's used for large type. You know how people will print out notices and just use Times New Roman, like 73 pt. It's atrocious! The font doesn't take will to being blown up (neither would you!). It's abuse. The others? They're often enlarged too, but they're hideous when small, so it's a moot point.

Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif
"Times New Roman", Times, serif
"Courier New", Courier, monospace
Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif
Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif
Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif

.fuente_titulos{
}

.fuente_titulos{
color:#00699C;
font-size:1.1em;
font-family:"trebuchet MS", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
}

A company called GreenPrint has invented a printing program that scans printouts for content that users are not likely to read before printing. Things like images and banner ads are eliminated from the printouts unless you specify otherwise. The program is compatible to all Microsoft Windows based systems. It also allows you to create even more economical PDF documents.

I have downloaded the program and it works great. It saves me from adjusting the margins in IE7, something I do whenever I print documents and which has saved me pages and pages of paper and printing toner. GreenPrint's software calculates exactly what amount of paper, money, and greenhouse gases you are saving by using the program. This is quite interesting.

An individual will on average save up to $90 a year, GreenPrint says. That’s the equivalent of more than 1,400 pages. The company says that if the number of users sign up for its program that they’re expecting to sign up, some 100 million trees could be prevented from being chopped down. That is the equivalent of 300 million tons of greenhouse gases.

A case study on GreenPrint's website details the contribution to the environment that a big pharmaceutical company made in just over 11 months. Their environmental report card shows that they contributed to 6,298 trees left standing, saving 1,858,876 gallons of water, cutting energy usage by 1,094,688 kilowatt hours (the equivalent to heating and cooling 47 houses for a year), preventing 823 cubic yards of solid waste being dumped in landfills, cutting air pollution back by 15,522 pounds. Imagine! That's only 11 months! There’s a free printer program as well as a paid downloadable program. The latter offers ad free print previews and tech support.

Download the program here.

GreenPrint has also invented a new font which is 20 percent more narrow than Arial, Helvetica and Times New Roman fonts. Called 'EverGreen', the new font (see picture) is the first in a series, GreenPrint promises. More eco friendly fonts will hit the market later in the year.

We all have our favourites, and we all have those fonts that could very easily be described as the bane of our existence. Me? I've always been rather fond of plain, serif fonts. Georgia, Garamond, even Times New Roman I can bear, although it's no doubt a little unoriginal. Give me a page typed in Comic Sans MS and I will scream. I had a teacher who used to type everything in Kristen ITC. EVERYTHING.

A few minutes ago I stumbled across this post--"The Secret Lives of Fonts" (via GracefulFlavor)--and it was definitely an interesting read, especially being a student myself. An excerpt from Phil's post:

I want to say that serifs appeal to academics more than sans-serifs do. I even briefly hypothesized that potential students would be innately drawn towards a the site of a college with a serif font more than one with a sans-serif.

I find this interesting, because I've noticed for myself when reading other student's assignments that those without fancy fonts, ugly wordart and colourful borders always look much more professional and much more academic. Out of the fonts Phil used - Times New Roman, Trebuchet MS and Georgia - essays written in Georgia tended to get higher marks, with Times New Roman coming in second.

What about you: what fonts do you use? Are you guilty of using terrible, terrible fonts like Comic Sans or would we get along quite nicely over a cup of hot chocolate discussing the benefits of serif fonts like Georgia?

Normally, I find this font boring. It was designed by Stanley Morrison in 1931 for the Times of London, to provide excellent readability for high-speed printing on low quality paper. I will acknowledge its power as a workhorse typeface. For print though, I prefer Caslon....but that's beside the point of my post today.

What I did want to point out was the beauty of this typeface online and offline, under particular conditions. First, increase the size, then reduce the kerning (the proportional spacing between characters). Note: The ability to adjust kerning is available in desktop publishing software like Quark or InDesign (but not MS Word). For online, it is only available when using CSS. Lastly, it's also available in Image editing software. I used Adobe Fireworks CS3 for the example shown below; the sizes are in 48, 58, and 90 (top to bottom), and kerned at -6.

One more thing about Times, if you use it in bold it will look hideous...but that's just me.
Also online, for all general purposes you're best off using the font Georgia. In some cases where a large typeface allows, Times may suit you better.

P.S. - I'm not claiming to be a pro typographer, it's just one artistic interest. If I'm wrong somewhere or you have any recommendations, please leave me a comment below. Thanks!

There’s an old adage, “A picture is worth a thousand words.”
As a writer, I am mildly offended

There’s an old adage, “A picture is worth a thousand words.”

As a writer, I am mildly offended by that sentiment. Is ANY picture worth ANY thousand words? Is the Mona Lisa equal in value to the word “word” 1,000 times? Or is the poetry of Poe, where every word and nuance and implication is not only selected with immeasurable care, but with lasting impact, as good as the pictures of crotch resulting from the “take a picture of your crotch with your friend’s camera without them noticing” game?

While a picture may be worth 1,000 words of dribble shelled out by a middle school student’s standard inverted pyramid thesis statement, three body paragraphs and a conclusion essay, to apply that equality across the board is simply naïve.

There is a lot that goes into a good 1,000 words, just as there is a lot that goes into a good picture. Regardless of picture’s medium (photography, paint, etc.) lighting, depth, framing and other visual principles are essential to take into account when creating visual art. Just as research, grammar, punctuation and other principles of writing are essential to create written art. So let us not be so quick to judge the equality of different arts before taking into account their value, impact and creativity.

But, if a picture is indeed worth a thousand words, what are a thousand pictures worth? Or what is one word worth? And where can we find an exchange rate for these symbolic representations of ideas? Well, I have taken the liberty to create an accurate measure.

1 Picture = 1,000 Words

1 Idiom = 1,000 Pictures

1 Hyperbole = 1,000 Idioms

1 Cliché = 1,000 Hyperboles

1 Assonance = 1,000 Clichés

1 Alliteration = 1,000 Assonances

1 Personification = 1,000 Alliterations

1 Simile = 1,000 Personifications

1 Metaphor = 1,000 Similes

1 Allegory = 1,000 Metaphors

1 Onomatopoeia = 1,000 Allegories

So, mathematically speaking, one onomatopoeia is worth one decillion (one with 33 zeros or 1.0 x 1033) words. One page of single spaced, 12 point, Times Now Roman font, with one inch margins all around can fit about 750 words. So one onomatopoeia is worth 1.3 nonillion (one with 30 threes or 1.333 x 1030) pages.

So, next time you get an assignment for a huge paper, just turn in a page that says, in big print, “BAMF.”

That should more than cover it.

That is all.

-Scotty

i am a lover of Verdana, particularly the way it looks when it's small. in fact, i wish it scaled up instead of just morphing into a totally different font somewhere around 10pt.

but i digress. Verdana didn't fare so well in this study. people seem to perceive its unseen users as dull. but, like me, before you despair that people don't perceive you as the person you think you are, note that these same 561 people picked Times New Roman as the best font for all things webtext. so, YMMV.
