Un reciente estudio de Nova Spivack, uno de los máximos responsables de la empresa Radar Networks, ha ofrecido su visión de lo que será la evolución de Internet. La web semántica tendrá mucho que ver con ese futuro a largo plazo.

En realidad la Web Semántica será la principal seña de identidad de lo que muchos han llamado la Web 3.0, es decir, el siguiente gran paso en la evolución de la telaraña mundial. Mientras que el concepto de la Web 2.0 aún queda difuso para muchos, otros piensan que simplemente está siendo una nueva oportunidad para hacer mucho dinero a través de Internet.

No obstante, un vídeo reciente de un profesor de antropología en la universidad de Kansas ha sido destacado ejemplo de lo que significa este concepto.

El estudio de Nova Spivack sitúa eventos razonables en la evolución de la Web, que estará marcada por la entrada en juego de la web semántica y que tendrá su periodo de vigencia entre el 2010 y el 2020. Más allá Spivack sitúa otro concepto, el de WebOS, que podría marcar el paso a la Web 4.0.

Puede que suene a ciencia ficción, pero el artículo de ZDNet cita a uno de los cibergurús más reconocidos, Raymond Kurzweil, que afirma que en 2029 los ordenadores tendrán la potencia de proceso equivalente a la de un cerebro humano, que se estima en 10^16 cálculos por segundo, y eso dará la opción de contar con un sistema operativo Web - Kurzweil niega la opción de ciencia ficción de una invasión de ‘máquinas inteligentes’ - y de avances increíbles en la nanotecnología. Y tal y como van las cosas, igual tiene razón y todo.

- aprender a operar softwares durante viagens de avião;
- que fizeram uma metáfora, que a computação anda tão avançada que chegou às nuvens;
- que os computadores têm orgasmos e ficam nas nuvens com isso (e depois acendem um cigarrinho);
- que todo mundo envolvido com computação vive viajando na maionese, com a cabeça distante, nas nuvens;
- etc.

Enfim, deixo abaixo dois artigos desta semana, interessantes e que explicam melhor o que é a computação nas nuvens e como ela está crescendo:

Nas nuvens, mas nem tanto
A partir de hoje está no ar, em fase beta, a versão em português do Office Live Workspace, o espaço de trabalho oficial para armazenar e compartilhar gratuitamente, na internet, documentos do Word, planilhas do Excel e apresentações do Power Point. Com o lançamento, a Microsoft deixa bem clara sua postura frente à febre do cloud computing. O conceito é amplo: serviços e programas estariam disponibilizados na web, na nuvem, e não mais no HD físico do micro. Uso de cloud computing cresce apesar de desconfiança
Além dos serviços de email, outro exemplo de cloud computing que vem sendo utilizado já há algum tempo é o armazenamento de fotos online. De acordo com o Pew, 34% dos participantes disseram que guardaram fotos online, enquanto 29% afirmaram ter usado aplicações como o Google Docs e o Adobe Photoshop Express. Leia mais.

If you had your hand up, you're wrong.

While Google is spinning Chrome as a revolutionary new browser, built from the ground up, by a company who has no baggage in the space, I'm not buying what they're selling. Sorry for yooo, Google.

Building a browser like Google has, is a monumental undertaking, even for a company with their resources and clout. It took them about two and a half years, and they've only shipped the Windows version. The Mac version is 'do-able' in around six months, according to the dev-lead. WTF? My BS-alarm is off the scale!

Chrome is built on the underpinnings of another open-source project, WebKit. And what else is WebKit famous for? That's right, Apple's Safari browser is based on WebKit. Apple donates generously of time and money and smarts, up-stream to the WebKit team. In fact, you can download nightly builds of WebKit, for Windows and Mac, from their site. The builds are very stable as a rule, and blindingly fast.

Note.
Chrome uses a slightly older branch of WebKit. The new, in-progress branch uses SquirrelFish, a Java interpreter which is significantly better (1.6 times faster) than the previous interpreter.
Google decided to use a yet another interpreter, V8, from a team in Denmark, so the trunk was forked before the SquirrelFish inclusion, and V8 was wired in.

So, what's this nonsense about two and a half years, and then another six months for a Mac version?? If the rendering engine is done (WebKit) the UI is done (the tough part would have been what-where-how), what are we missing?

Here's the answer.
Chrome is not another browser.
Chrome is an early prototype of a Web OS, which Google believes will change the way we understand computers and computing. It's a ramp-up to their doctrine of cloud computing, with off-shore floating data-centres and high-speed internet *everywhere*. It's the beginning of everything that everyone else has been frantically spinning buzz-words about. WebOS, Cloud Computing, Mobile.Me, Mesh. Except, they're doing it. Google is really, really doing it.

All of this might just be the ramblings of some old Delphi dev-coot, except for the 'tell'. Top poker players know that everyone has a 'tell'. It's a involuntary gesture, a posture, a ... something, that 'tells' the opponent that you're bluffing, or that you have four Aces... Top players will play small hands for ages against opponents, searching for the tell. Cos that's the key to seeing what's really going on. Past the bluff and bullshit. Past the spin.
So, what's the 'tell' in Google Chrome? Ready?

That behavior is a defense against runaway/rogue code. It's Operating System kung-fu. A tab(application) dies or runs away, the browser(OS) kills that container, and recovers the memory it was using. Completely. Without crashing the browser(OS).

That's the 'tell'.
That's why it took two and a half years.
It's an Operating System.
More precisely, it's the beginning of an Operating System.

It is, for damn sure, not just another cool browser. Not even a little bit.

Carnet d'adresses: Vos contacts à un clic!

Calendrier: Vos rendez-vous, tâches et autres dans un outil simple.

Vous avez plein de widgets à votre disposition, comme des post-it, une calculatrice, la météo, et bien plus.

Ce site est en version bêta et devrait bientôt sortir. Pour les impatients, je vais envoyer une invitation aux trois premiers commentaires.

Segundo o El País, o conceito que guia o desenvolvimento do Midori é o da virtualização, que permite criar sistemas que possam ser acessados de qualquer terminal, que consumem menos recursos e que estão começando a ter um importante papel na informática corporativa.

A Microsoft preferiu não fazer comentários sobre um projeto que ainda não está maduro. "O Midori é um dis muitos projetos em que a Microsoft está trabalhando. Mas ainda é muito cedo para falar dele", afirmou em comunicado.

I have only talked about the pluses of G.ho.st; so far.

There are a few things that are not so great about this webOs. When viewing the Internet from the interface, it's slow, especially if you are trying to view youtube videos. The graphics can be choppy at times, the menus can take a while to pop up, and sometimes it will just lag a bit.

Just tell me what I need to know!:

G.ho.st is great for uploading files that you want to have access to any where that you have Internet available. Files upload quickly, and music files play well inside the OS, it's not for browsing the Internet though, like i said, it's very,very slow. But hey! if you are using it, you have access to the Internet, so you don't need to browse from it. You get 5 GB of memory, and for every person you refer you get 1 more gigabyte. So if you sign up say crowverte referred you!

O conceito cresceu, e a idéia que antes parecia inacessível hoje é uma realidade: um sistema operacional online. Isso mesmo, sem precisar instalar nada no seu computador.

É claro que ainda é muito limitado, mas as possibilidades são muito amplas. Basta criar uma conta e acessar sua própria "máquina virtual", que permite - entre outras funções - criar (e salvar!) documentos online. Ao terminar o que você queria fazer, basta efetuar o logoff e tudo ficará salvo. No próximo acesso, tudo estará exatamente como foi deixado no último uso - assim como o computador de nossa casa ou trabalho.

A idéia vem para ajudar aqueles que necessitam de um acesso livre, por assim dizer, sem a preocupação de sincronizar arquivos entre vários computadores diferentes. Se você já esteve em uma situação parecida e se interessou pela idéia, ou então quer apenas experimentar, o g.ho.st é uma boa alternativa:

One of the best contender to Google's online office product and i believe some are really better than what google have developed. Besides those, it is providing online project management and other such features as well.

One of the awesome online web application. If i'd have to rename it i'll rename it as "Online Photoshop" - yes and i hope you got it what does this application do.

A nice online free tool to build websites without any cumbersome coding. A replacement of early versions of FrontPage and DreamWeaver.

Have you seen a G.ho.st? No, not the backup/restore software. This is a service from Ghost Inc that provides a web operating system to you from a web browser. The category of service/software is called WebOS. The idea is that you can access your virtual desktop from anywhere that can run a web browser.

Inside this environment you can run similar things to what you would find in Windows. You can work with media like music, video, and office documents. It looks very similar to the standard Windows layout but uses web software instead. It is mostly based on Open Source modules.

There was a demo of G.ho.st at D6. You can also try it for free at G.ho.st. You can even watch an introduction from Founder and CEO Zvi Schreiber.

G.ho.st should be seen as a disruptive technology since it has the potential to upset the traditional Windows desktop model. It allows the desktop to be highly portable and based on a service which is constantly backed up and maintained. It also is using Amazon storage which is incredibly cheap. They currently advertise that the service costs nothing to use. You get a total of 5GB data and 3GB mail.

I tried it out a few months ago and was impressed with what it could do. It was more responsive than expected, even coming from Australia. It still has a ways to go before it will fully compete with Windows but this is the nature of disruptive technologies.

Wikipedia has an article about G.ho.st and one of the surprising aspects is that Ghost Inc is actually a joint Israeli/Palestinian venture.

Windows, MAC and UNIX are all successors to operating systems that were designed in the 60’s, 70’s and 80's, long before the Internet was even dreamed of. For three decades, it was taken for granted that an operating system runs on one PC and each user's data and apps are walled in by that one physical PC. Each of us had to worry about administering our PC - backup, anti-virus and software upgrades. When we got a new hard disk or PC or a new version of Windows we each had to spend hours migrating our apps, data and settings.

Recently with the advent of the Internet and broadband connections, people have started to move some data and apps onto the Web cloud - Web mail, Web photo albums and more recently Web documents and spreadsheets. Now the data and apps which are on the Web are available from everywhere, but new problems arise. The Web applications lack an operating system and are consequently inconvenient to use - each application has its own URL, its own username & password, its own file system and folders and its own look-and-feel.

G.ho.st was founded in 2006 and launched in 2007 to address this need by providing a hosted web-based operating system that works with third-party web-based software. In many ways G.ho.st is the first true revolution in operating systems since the introduction of graphical user interfaces in the 80's .

Both Facebook and Google are competing over the social space, a space currently dominated by Facebook. It will be an interesting few months to see how both platforms react. There have been rumors that Facebook's new profile design contains all the elements of an operating system, which perhaps may be the best battle ground -- the webOS.

I think the battle will be long but will only result in some great innovations and leaps forward in technology -- openID/data portability will definitely have a role to play. WebOS and seamless data portability between platforms is the way of the future, those that hold out and leave users and their data in a black hole will be left behind in the dust.For JustMeans, openID/data portability will only enhance the user experience as we will be able to better interact with these other platforms, while still bringing our own core competency to the picture.

More thoughts on this to come as I continue to ponder over this.

Para os nostálgicos que jogaram Pong, assim como eu, na infância. Coloquei esse joguinho no Codeorama OS para matar a saudade dos velhos tempos de "tele-jogo", na TV com aquele barulhinho "chato" da bolinha (quadrada).

I've managed to try a few, cover a few, view a few.  Below will be a review of some of the better ones.

YouOS

YouOS has been DISCONTINUED. This online OS is no longer offered.

As far as functionality is concerned, this one is a real winner. There are several thousand different applications you can choose to install to your OS. (by browsing a list) By default, the client comes with web browsers, an RSS feed reader, trash bin, chat software, a word processor, and several other programs. The applications can be moved accross the desktop, and the interface works similarly to Linux. You can set desktop wallpapers, drag items to the trash bin, etc.

The OS definitely lacks in the design department; everything is rather bland. The main point to this webOS is its functionality. Additional programs such as paint, games, and IM clients can be installed.

Rating - 9/10

Best online operating system so far, as far as functionality and diversity goes.

OOS is designed to mimic Windows XP. And it does a damn good job--albeit a simple one. There's not much in the way of applications here. You're given an extremely simple file browser, internet browser, word processor, notepad, music player, PDF viewer, and calculator. Not much in the way of functionality, but the interface is great.

Rating - 7/10  Not many applications, great design.
