Should Avid make the Media Composer “Quicktime Native”? It’s a big question (and n

Should Avid make the Media Composer "Quicktime Native"? It's a big question (and not a new one, of course) so let me focus on just two key issues: first, the ability to open and edit any Quicktime file without conversion, and second, the ability to put material in a bin without actually copying them to a centralized media folder. These are separate, of course, but in FCP, they work together to make the program seem more accessible to newbies. And they can be helpful for more sophisticated users, too, given the right circumstances.

The subject came up for me recently because I've got a box of home videos that I need to digitize. They should be on a big hard drive if I ever want to do anything with them. But what format to choose? Avid would encode DV as MXF files, Final Cut as Quicktimes. Which is safer? Which will be usable ten or twenty years from now?

In the early '90s I telecined an old student project I'd shot on film to the best tape source we had then -- one inch. Right now, that tape is almost useless. A few years ago, I found somebody to transfer it for me (and not well, unfortunately), so today I've got a DV, a DVD and a Digi-Beta. I figured I had covered my butt. But times change. Today, I'd like to have HD, and the best way to make that is to do another transfer -- from film.

These are exactly the kinds of questions every producer will soon have to answer about every piece of media they produce.

And that brings me back to the MC and Quicktime. What format do I trust to have the longest life? MXF is an open standard, not owned by Avid. But will it be readable down the line? Right now Quicktime can be played on just about any computer. But its future is entirely dependent on Apple.

In general, and it may surprise you, but I think Avid might do well making the Media Composer operate on Quicktime files directly. Depending on your point of view, that could arguably make the MC the best QT editing application available.

It's a big question, and maybe not the most important one for Avid, especially given how much work it might take. But it needs to be asked. I'm curious to hear your thoughts.

Users reported that they got below error message when they were trying to view the notifications while logged in as SYSADMIN user on a development instance.

ORA-20002: 3207: User 'SYSADMIN' does not have access to notification .
ORA-06512: at "APPS.WF_ADVANCED_WORKLIST", line 82

A quick check on the Workflow System Administrator Value (How to check this value) revealed that the value is not set to SYSADMIN and its set to "Workflow Administrator Web (New)".

Is this the cause of the problem, NO.

The problem was SYSADMIN user didnt have this responsibility (Workflow Administrator Web (New)) assigned to him. To resolve the issue, Assign the responsibility using System Administrator -> Security : User -> Define -> SYSADMIN user.

By default and design, only SYSADMIN user can view other users notifications. What if a requirement

By default and design, only SYSADMIN user can view other users notifications. What if a requirement comes to enable everyone/certain group of people to view everyones notifications ... this might sound crazy for a production environment but its a valid request on a Development environment.

Ok coming to the technicalities,

Step 1: Login as SYSADMIN User

Step 2: Select System Administrator or Workflow Administrator for Web Applications ->
-> Workflow : Administrator Workflow
-> Administration
-> In the admin page you will see this message "Set * to grant admin privilege to all users"
-> Put * in the text box next to "Workflow System Administrator" and click Apply.

Thats it, now anyone can see anybodys notifications.

Personally im not for setting it as " * " , i would rather set it to a responsibility viz., "Workflow Administrator Web (New)" and assign the responsibility to the respective group of development group to view the notifications.

cheers,

Tricks of the Microsoft Office 2007 Gurus is designed to give you the information you need without making you wade through ponderous explanations and interminable technicalities. To make your life easier, this book includes various features and conventions that help you get the most out of the book and from Excel. These include the following:

Steps—Throughout the book, each Office task is summarized in step-by-step procedures.

Things you type—Whenever I suggest that you type something, what you type appears in a bold font.

Commands—I use the following style for menu commands: File, Open. This means that you pull down the File menu and select the Open command.

Code-continuation character—When a line of code is too long to fit on asingle line of this book, it’s broken at a convenient place, and the code-continuationcharacter displays at the beginning of the next line.

This book also uses the following boxes to draw your attention to important (or
merely interesting) information.

Here's a decision-making strategy someone shared with me recently...

Get a 3x5 index card. On one side, write YES in big letters. Underneath, list all the things that you want more of in your work and life right now. On the other side, write NO in big letters and list all the things that you want less of in your work and life right now.

Place the card by your phone or computer where it's in plain sight and readily accessible.

Next time someone calls and asks, "Would you like to...? Could you...?" say, "One moment - I'll check." They may think you are checking your calendar, but you are really looking at your handy-dandy index card to remind yourself of what is important, of your standards and boundaries, of your aims. If it's on the NO side, say, "No, thank you." If it's on the YES side, go ahead and check your calendar and say, "Yes, how about the 18th?"

So simple it's freakin' brilliant, isn't it?

I am still looking for a workable and effective workflow with the Everio GZ-HD7. Using PowerDirect

I am still looking for a workable and effective workflow with the Everio GZ-HD7. Using PowerDirector Express, I can convert the files to mpeg2 and use it in Premiere Pro 1.0. But when I export the video, (as far as I know,) it squashes the widescreen footage, creating black letterboxes on both sides, and I cannot open the file with Media Player Classic. I may check into getting a complient codec to read the exported files.

[caption id="attachment_81" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Cannot render file"][/caption]

So, some progress is being made, thankfully. We will see whether I will need to purchase a commercial video converter or new editing (NLE) software soon.

I hope the ideas will come, and I need to sit down and brainstorm some film ideas! Bonsai!

Well, God bless,

Thanks for listening,

1. Order Entry
This is first stage, When the order is entered in the system, it creates a record in order headers and Order Lines table.

Enter header details: Once you enter details on the order header and save it or move it to lines, record goes to one table oe_order_headers_all flow_status_code = ENTERED, booked_flag = N), Primary key=HEADER_ID

No record exist in any other table for this order till now.

Enter Line details for this order: Enter different item numbers, quantity and other details in line tab. When the record gets saved, it goes to one table. Order header details will be linked with line details by order HEADER_ID. oe_order_lines_all (flow_status_code = ENTERED, booked_flag = N, open_flag = Y) Primary key= LINE_ID

Pick Release is the process of putting reservation on on-hand quantity available in the inventory and pick them for particular sales order.

MTL_SERIAL_NUMBERS_TEMP (if item is serial controlled at receipt then record goes in this table)

MTL_SERIAL_NUMBERS (enter value in GROUP_MARK_ID )

*In shipping transaction form order status remains "Released to Warehouse" and all the material still remains in source sub-inventory. We need to do Move Order Transaction for this order. Till this no material transaction has been posted to MTL_MATERIAL_TRANSACTIONS

Well, for the average weekend photographer this is an over kill. But for a hobbyst, or an amature a good work flow could save a lot of headache and save some valuable time. When I bought my first camera, I took about 50 pictures with it, when I realized that i I want to make pictures I am willing to look at, I need to get better than a fixed focus 2MP camera. So I bought my first camera which is considered a bridge camera back the. It was a great camera and in one summer I hit a record more than 3000 pictures, wow I was shutter happy. It cost me my trusty PowerBooks hard drive.

At that time I did not do some of the basic things I now know I should have. If I knew back then what I learned it would have saved me quiet some time and pain.. But we live to learn right

So what is a work flow? Well it is the process of taking the picture from Camera/memory card to your computer, or final print. This depends greatly on why or what you take your pictures for. If you make a living from photography, then there are some extra steps you need to take. For most people, users the guide or workflow that I mention should be sufficient, but by no means complete.

Take Pictures

This is the first and most important step naturally. Go take pictures, go for a walk in the wild, forest, street or where ever you enjoy taking pictures. Try taking good ones, and not just be trigger happy. Pay attention to settings and compositions. Some shots turn out bad because of composition

Download the pictures

I think it is best to do this through a card reader, many times it will be faster than through the camera USB connections. And this way you also save the Cameras batteries. Many software help by renaming the pictures during download, some you can create custom folders in and then it just downloads the images and keep the name they have in the camera, some give you the option of renaming then according to a job.
I usually use the software to create a folder with the job name, for example Forest, the software will then automatically create a folder with that photo shoot date, and name the files in it as folder and serial number. This works fine with me, though sometime when I go back and I can't remember the day of the trip or shooting, I need to take a look in the folder. In other words this can probably be improved.

Process the pictures

Look at the pictures some will stand out, some will go to the delete que directly. the ones that stand out, should be rated, 1-5 stars, the software I use allows me to rate the pictures using stars. One I have chosen the best ones, I can also pick the ones that are a keeper.

Delete bad ones

Now the really bad, blurred out of focus pictures need to go to the trash right away. I have done the mistake of saying oh maybe something can be done with it. But no, out-of- focus, and blurry moved in pictures are useless, and they just use up valuable space. I don't always follow this, but I have started to do it more vigorously.

Do the post processing to the ones that need it

Once the best lets say 4-5 star photos have been selected then I usually go and do the adjustments needed to make them perfect. This means a little sharpening, curve adjustment, white balance, highlight, etc... I rarely do any photoshop touching up. Sometimes it is necessary, but I try to stay away from that.

Tag and edit the IPICT

Once all the pictures have been edited and fixed up, I usually add tags, and add the IPICT information that I want embedded in the pictures. After that, I usually export the ones like the most, and upload them to my sharing site. I have a flickr, and a smugmug account. I had flickr pro for a year, this year I decided to give smugmug a shot, and so far I am very pleased with their services, and all.

Back-up

Since I only do photography as a hobby I haven't really paid much attention to this. But I think I should start doing so. I will begin making CD Archives, or DVD archives of some of my best photos. I am not planning on selling them, but a lot of times I enjoy going back and looking at them. If photography is your profession then you definitely need a more comprehensive backup strategy than mine.

So those are my 2 cents, let me know what you think?

Aşamaların her birisi içinde olsun teklifin.

Last week, I had the privilege of having lunch with Keith Swenson. I have to admit I'm a fan of his "Go Flow" blog.

Keith Swenson is a fellow of the Workflow Management Coalition and he works for the R&D of Fujitsu Computers Systems. He has more than 15 years of experience in the workflow and business process management fields.

We talked about XPDL, federated workflows, RESTful BPM, WfXML-R and he gave me some explanations about the new Fujitsu process discovery service (I'd love to work on such a tool).

This meeting could have happened a bit earlier as we realized that our offices are just 4 blocks away from each other.

Keith gladly accepted to give a speech soon at a BPMinna meeting (Wakizaka-san, we have to talk about that).

This lunch was very instructive as well as friendly, I just forgot to ask for his business card, well, next time.

Is a social network right for your business?

Imagine hosting a network for your customers in which they share travel experiences, pictures, or ti

Imagine hosting a network for your customers in which they share travel experiences, pictures, or tips, maybe even connect with other fellow customers of similar interests to plan a trip. Before you even realize it, you've helped generate more business for your agency, with little effort and promotion, and you've helped maintain brand loyalty.

And that's just the beginning.

There is a growing trend among corporations and small businesses to incorporate social networks as part of their employee's daily workflows, in addition to the inevitable customer uses. Yes, social networks. The same technology behind popular Web sites like MySpace and Facebook is spreading through the corporate world, linking professionals with similar interests and expertise within organizations and without. With the increasing ubiquity of these networks in our cultural consciousness, businesses need to address if there's a place for social networks in their office and business strategies.

There's a lot more to social networks than sharing photos and collecting friends. While social networks can contain a variety of Web 2.0 features like wiki's, blogs, and RSS feeds, the primary goal of a network is to connect someone with others of like interests and expertise to share information and experiences. Healthcare professionals, and even patients with specific ailments, have networks to share knowledge with each other. Travelers have created networks that facilitate finding other travelers and sharing information about where to eat and what to do all over the world. But how can it fit into your daily workflow?

Microsoft and IBM have already developed business-focused social software that incorporates e-mail, knowledge management and document sharing, as well as the social features that make it easy to connect to others within the company to create project teams, or just share information and expertise. There are also a number of free "open-source" alternatives, or Web services such as Ning, that allow you to create your own networks and try them out at a minimal, or no, cost.

There are several avenues to explore. Should you incorporate a social network into your internal workflows or leave the networks to your customers? Maybe both? Regardless of the avenue you choose, here are a few simple tips to keep in mind as you go Web 2.0:

Trust your users. It seems scary to let people run free on your dime but as long as your network is focused, you have to trust your users. You'd be surprised at how well people police themselves. A key tenet of Web 2.0 is to let things develop from the ground up; not the top down.

Be authentic. People see through blatant marketing and material that seems too polished. Personalize your network and infuse it with some personal warmth. It helps your brand credibility. In this age of YouTube and blogs written by grandmothers down the street, people are more trusting of something "real" than an overly-polished attempt to drum up more business; even if that real thing is a blatant attempt to drum up more business.

Know your culture. If you're a strict, top-down company, social networks and Web 2.0 are probably not for you. Understand your strengths and weaknesses as an organization before you attempt to implement this technology.

Of course, do your research too. It's a big leap to take but with the changing workforce already increasingly infused with people who expect collaborative experiences, social networking must be a serious consideration for your business going forward.

In order to unlearn habits and replace them with new behaviors, to write new rulebooks for our lives

In order to unlearn habits and replace them with new behaviors, to write new rulebooks for our lives, we sometimes have to correct or update our self-image.

For example, being an artist-type, I long assumed that I was primarily a visual person. But of the three learning styles - visual, auditory and kinesthetic - turns out my preference is primarily kinesthetic, auditory second, and visual last. Never would have guessed. Kinesthetic people are athletes, right? Can be, but it's more about preferring "hands-on" experience. I'm a big fan of working with rather than against myself (go with your strengths), so better understanding this about myself has allowed and inspired me to really improve how I work and structure my day's activities. I take frequent breaks to get away from my desk and move, I give myself time to think while doing something physical (yardwork, exercise, housecleaning), I read less and listen to audio books more, I trade off writing by typing with spoken dictation, I balance computer time with studio time - and so forth.

I also consider myself a right-brainer, but left-brain/right-brain traits really exist on a spectrum. I happen to fall somewhere to the right of center, but I'm a lot closer to the middle than many creatives. The shortcoming of the left-brain/right-brain paradigm is that there is only one spectrum. So, this is where a personality inventory like Myers-Briggs can be helpful - which has four. Through MBTI, I know I tend to prefer order over spontaneity, but that order is determined by relationships and personal values rather that impersonal analysis, facts and logic. My left-brain talent for planning is manifested in a very right-brain way using intuition and emotion. I simply don't match either stereotype.

Rarely does anyone exist completely at one end of the left/right-brain spectrum or the other. We're all much more complex and individual than that. Assuming you have traits you do not or trying to conform to the extreme - even subconsciously - can make succeeding in your work that much harder. So don't be a victim of stereotyping. Learn more about who you really are.

The new look Delicious.com looks and feels great. I have to say it’s one of the better web application make-over upgrades I have seen in a long time.

The colors and design are first rate, and I love the minimal yet fully loaded layout. Everything you need is within easy reach and now you actually feel like you want to explore the site. The last design was horrible and I only ever accessed my Delicious via the Firefox plugin.

In continuation of yesterday’s post…

In continuation of yesterday's post...

"But don’t you recommend delegating the maintenance we don’t like doing?!" Well… it depends. Do it the wrong way and you won’t get the results you expect.

Here's what happens...

When you lose touch with the connection between what you love and what is necessary to its care, you come to see maintenance not only as a set of tasks entirely separate from your other activities, but something you can completely separate yourself from - which is very enticing when it's stuff you don't like doing.

Let's say you finally decide to eliminate such tasks from your schedule and seek out people who can do them for you. You find the perfect virtual assistant (or bookkeeper, organizer, computer tech, or housecleaner). "Fantastic!" you say, "Now I won't have deal with this crap ever again! Yay!"

Except you will. No VA (or bookkeeper, organizer, computer tech, or housecleaner), no matter how experienced or talented, is a mind-reader. From time to time, those people supporting you will need your input, they will have some questions that need answering. If you persist in avoiding any participation in the maintenance of your business (or life) - one of three things will happen. Without your input, those supporting you will be forced to cease their work (even drop you as a client) and you'll have to deal with whatever negative consequences are the result. Or, without your input, those supporting you might choose to act on your behalf, making the best-educated guess about what you most likely would want to do, which may not be at all the direction you would have chosen to take things. It's even possible a nefarious service provider might take advantage of your disinterest by taking you to the proverbial cleaners.

But let's say you don't completely avoid input - your participation is just reluctant and minimal (e.g., you reply to their emails, but a week later and with one sentence). If that's the case, you are just burning your money. Grudging participation slows down the process and takes those supporting you that much longer to get their work done - which they will bill you for one way or another. And it will be a long time before you build enough momentum to see any profit from your investment.

But something more insidious also happens when you become disconnected from what is essential to caring for what you love, when you come to see maintenance as a necessary evil, when you think of it as the crap you hate about being self-employed. It changes how you perceive and interact with the professionals who are doing the work you have delegated. If you think such tasks are crap, what do you think of the person who has chosen handle said crap for a living, who has a passion for it even? Would you not experience the same disconnect with that person as you do with work delegated to them? If so, how successful is the partnership likely to be?

On the other hand, if you understand what is essential to caring for what you love and its integral part in succeeding in the business and life you want for yourself - then the value of all that maintenance (and the people who can do it really well) is obvious. It's something you are naturally going to want to pay attention to, be involved with and invest in, even when you delegate. The greater your sense of connection and value, the more the relationships with those you work with will be collaborative, dynamic, synergistic, full of momentum - and profitable.

Types of Workflows and selecting the best one

WorkFlow Foundation (WF) is a .NET 3.0 technology for managing workflows. Workflow can be thought of

WorkFlow Foundation (WF) is a .NET 3.0 technology for managing workflows. Workflow can be thought of as a series of task that needs to be completed either sequentially or parrallely, completing one activity at a time in a pipeline

.NET Workflow are of two types:

1. State Machine Workflow

2. Sequential Worflow

The good question is: how to decide which one suits your need?

Let's decide:
1. State Machine has states, states can be thought of as a land mark in a long running activity. You reach one

land mark, rest there, move to next and so on. Take for example Performance Appraisal at the end of the year.

The states can be represented as:

1. Employee Completed Self Appraisal
2. Manager Completed Employee Appraisal
3. Reivew Completed between Employee and Manager
4. Ratings Finalized

Now you move in order, you complete the state 1 then 2 and so on and each of these states mark your status in the whole process.

Workflow also can persist your states in database, so it doesn't matter how long it takes for them to complete.

So if you are working on an activity which needs human interventions (for approvals) you should go for State Machine Workflows. It can also take care of load on the server due to multiple workflows starting at the same time.

2. Sequential Workflow can process activities in sequence but at the same time they can also spawn multiple thread on a part of the activity by using the Parallel Activity component. Use Sequential Workflows if you are not very much well verse with multiple thread management, but still want to use its features to enhance the performance of your application.

adobe released lightroom 2 a couple of days ago and being the photography software geek that i am, i was quick to download the trial version from their website.

my initial concern of backward compatibility with the first version proved to be unfounded as i was able to smoothly transfer my catalogue of photos (all 6000+ of them) into the new version, along with all the edits i had made on them, as well as ALL of the develop presets that i use.

for the uninitiated, lightroom is basically a photo-management software that allows photographers to download their photos and organise them before adjustments to white balance, exposure, contrast, etc. can be made. these adjustments can then be synchronised among an unlimited number of photos, saving time and effort. it is in essence a dressed-up variant of adobe camera raw, with the ability to create web galleries as well as prepare photos for print.

[warning: if you have no prior experience with lightroom, the next part is going to sound like mumbo-jumbo crazyspeak]

the interface remains pretty much the same, with the 5 modules - 'library', 'develop', 'slideshow', 'print' and 'web' arranged in a linear workflow fashion. what has changed looks-wise is perhaps only the addition of fancier looking icons. users retain the ability to customise the display area to their liking.

the most striking addition to this version really is the ability to make local adjustments on photos, instead of just global adjustments. for instance, it used to be that once the exposure on a photo was tweaked, every single pixel undergoes that same amount of increase or decrease. with lightroom 2, users can apply changes to a selected area by using the 'brush' or the 'gradient' tool. sounds familiar? yeah, it's pretty much being able to do 'masking' in lightroom without having to take a photo into photoshop.

the other new feature that impressed me is the ability to add a vignette to a photo AFTER it has been cropped. in the first version, the position of the vignette is relative to the edges of the original image, meaning that if i were to crop a picture substantially, the vignette would either be off-centered or hardly visible at all.

kudos to adobe for doing a great job of listening to the feedback of photographers and designing a platform that is increasingly looking like a viable replacement for photoshop. while that might not be the case for those who rely extensively on photoshop to realise their aesthetic vision, lightroom 2 might just prove to be all that the working photographer needs on the post-processing end of things.

lightroom 2 can be purchased off adobe's website for US$299 or if you already have the first version, the upgrade starts from US$99.

Adobe just released Version 2 of Lightroom. I've been using the Beta since April. It had plenty of new features. They added more in the final release. Such as a Graduated Filter. John Nack has some of the details Lightroom 2 is here.

There are alot of great things in LR2. Localized corrections is at the top of the list.

There are two things the engineers did that just annoy the heck outa me! First they removed the metadata browser panel on the lower left side of the Library module. This kept a running total of the camera type, lens types, file type, Aperture, shutter speed, date. Just click the lens type and all the photos taken with that lens would be shown. Now you have to create a filter preset and then run the preset to get the info. That's not streamlining your workflow. What's also not streamlining is the decision to move the straightening tool from underneath the photo to the upper right panel in the Develop Module. I liked using the slider. With it underneath, I just looked down to manipulate it. Now I need to look up and away. This draws my attention away from the photo more than the other way and I don't like that.

If you've been considering Lightroom, I recommend it despite my annoyances.

Remember the Fifth Rule.
