Making a film is a collaborative process, but the team behind the upcoming movie Iron Sky is taking that notion to a whole new level by opening up the production process to, well, the world.

Based in Finland, Director Timo Vuorensola and his team made a name for themselves a few years ago with the release of the sci-fi parody Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning. It was made with the help of 3,000 people who pitched in to create the movie.

Now Vuorensola is heading up a more ambitious collaboration in Iron Sky. To organize his worldwide network of collaborators, he's launched Wreck A Movie (the title comes from Star Wreck), where people can participate in the process, and eventually launch their own collaborative project. Following is a lightly-edited interview with Vuorensola conducted via email (there's even a version in Finnish at the end of the article).

NewTeeVee: What is Iron Sky?

Timo Vuorensola: Iron Sky is a science fiction comedy, a pretty dark one I might say, about Nazis that fled to the Moon in 1945. Now it's 2018, and they are coming back.

NewTeeVee: Explain Wreck A Movie. How does it work? How does Iron Sky fit in?

Timo Vuorensola: Wreck A Movie is a collaborative film production platform. The big idea behind is to create a place where anybody can join in and bring their creativity to existing film productions. Later on, we'll start opening the system up so that anybody can also set up their own production there and find a collaborating community around it. The reason why we did Wreck A Movie is because we wanted to find out a way to take advantage of the Internet communities into film industry, and bring resources otherwise unavailable to the hands of independent filmmakers.

Iron Sky fits in with Wreck A Movie, because community-wise it's a sequel to Star Wreck, our previous film, that was done with the aid of collaborating community of around 3,000 people around the web. We wanted to expand and organize that work with Wreck A Movie, and take Iron Sky a few steps further from where Star Wreck was.

NewTeeVee: How does the collaboration work? Who gets final cut?

Timo Vuorensola: Collaboration works so that each production has its own production leader, a person - maybe director, or producers - who sets up tasks that are required in the production of the film, and the community takes part in those tasks, gives their suggestions and collaborates with each other to create what the producer has asked for. The final cut still stays in the hands of the production team/director.

NewTeeVee: What's your timeline for Iron Sky? How will you distribute it once it's done? How much will it cost?

Timo Vuorensola: I would suggest we will release Iron Sky in 2010, but it's still too early to promise. We are aiming to fund the film in 2008, shoot it in 2009 and release 2010. If everything goes well. But the same thing is still with distribution, we are still not totally sure on how it will operate. I have only two main aims there: It will be shown on the big screen, and it will be distributed on the Internet. The initial budget of the film is around 3 million euros.

NewTeeVee: How long did it take to make Star Wreck? How many times was it seen? Did you make money off it?

Timo Vuorensola: We made Star Wreck for 7 years, but Samuli, our producer, had been working on various Star Wrecks for about 14 years in total. Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning has been downloaded approximately 8 million times to date. We made about 200,000 - 300,000 euroes out of it, by selling DVDs, merchandise and TV distribution rights.

NewTeeVee: What other movies do you have in the works?

Timo Vuorensola: I'm working on few other ideas, but right now focusing on Iron Sky. Most of the film ideas are strongly related to Internet, one of them specifically to spam email and so called Nigerian scams.

ED. NOTE: And since the project is based in Finland, we thought it'd be nice to translate it for all his Finnish friends and family back home (thanks to our own Irina Haltsonen for the translation!)

NewTeeVee: Mikä Iron Sky on?

Timo Vuorensola: Iron Sky on scifikomedia, aika synkkä sellainen, joka kertoo kuuhun vuonna 1945 paenneista natseista. Siinä eletään vuotta 2018, kun he ovat tulossa takaisin.

NewTeeVee: Selittäisitkö meille, mikä on Wreck A Movie. Miten se toimii? Ja miten Iron Sky liittyy siihen?

Timo Vuorensola: Wreck A Movie on yhteisöllinen elokuvatuotantoyhtiöalusta. Wreck A Movie syntyi, kun halusimme elokuvateollisuuden hyötyvän uudella tavalla verkkoyhteisöistä. Lisäksi halusimme tuoda uusia resursseja riippumattomien elokuvayhtiöiden ulottuville.

Iron Sky toimii Wreck A Movie -palvelussa, koska yhteisöllisesti se on jatkoa aiemmalle elokuvallemme Star Wreckille.

NewTeeVee: Mikä on Iron Skyn aikataulu?

Elokuvan alkuperäinen budjetti on noin kolme miljoonaa euroa.

NewTeeVee: Kauanko Star Wreckin tekemiseen meni? Kuinka monta kertaa se on katsottu? Teittekö sillä rahaa?

Timo Vuorensola: Star Wreckin tekemiseen meni meiltä seitsemän vuotta, mutta tuottajamme Samuli on tehnyt sitä yhteensä noin 14 vuoden ajan. Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning on ladattu noin kahdeksan miljoonaa kertaa.

NewTeeVee: Mitä muita elokuvia sinulla on tekeillä?

Hey Folks,

This is a bit of a departure from what I usually blog about, but it's something that I've been following with great interest for the sheer awesomeness of it all. The Production of a Sci-Fi comedy by the makers of Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning called Iron Sky, that's in pre-production now. Iron Sky is an unusual production in many ways. It's not a Hollywood production, but instead it's produced here in Finland. Furthermore, it takes full advantage of Internet in ways that are unprecedented in film making. Like Star Wreck, there is a core team that's supported by a community on the Internet. It is also a kind of a proof-of-concept production for Wreck-A-Movie, an Internet platform for community based film-production.

As I said the film is a Sci-Fi comedy about... well, here's the synopsis:

In 1945 the Nazis fled to the moon. In 2018 they are coming back.
On Earth frustrated people hunger for anything shocking, strange or surprising, like a lightning bolt out of the blue. They’re going to get it – more so than they’ve ever hoped! And they’re going to love it!

It is written by an award-winning Finnish writer Johanna Sinisalo, the author of Not Before Sundown... or Troll - A Love Story for those of you in America. Actually, if I could sneak in a book recommendation, I'd do that now. Wait, I can. It's my blog after all. Here's another synopsis:

The story is about a homosexual photographer Mikael, who finds a young and injured troll and takes it to his home. This troll is inspired by Finnish folklore and is an intelligent, almost human-like animal, and partakes, in appearance, of a cat and a monkey.

The book has won quite a few awards including James Tiptree, Jr. Award, and if that's not a enough, I like it too :D

Anyway, now that my little spell of ADD has passed, we can return to our topic of Iron Sky. As I said the movie is in pre-production, which means it'll be some time (years, perhaps) until we can see it on the big screen. There are many challenges the folks at Energia (and others) have to overcome before filming can start. The producers of the film will be trying to find funding armed with the script, the wreck-a-movie platform, and the teaser you see below. In addition to that, Energia is selling war bonds. It's what they call their limited set of Iron Sky goodies they sell to finance the film. I just love their commitment to the theme.

You just have admire the rebel attitude of these guys. No one believed in a Finnish sci-fi project before Star Wreck, and now the guys are out to prove themselves again. Don't believe me? Check out the teaser:

Following the lead of music and software, movies might be the next thing that becomes more easily distributed, and more importantly, simply and cheaply produced. Wreck A Movie is the open-source Finnish platform that wishes to free creativity from the bounds of Hollywood and the studio system in general. Board member and entrepreneur Peter Vesterback describes the software's aim in simply words: "we want to wreck the Hollywood model". His logic is that Hollywood produces about 700 films annually but there is thousands of people that would love to get a chance at movie making.

To get an idea of what can be done, check out Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning, a film that cost $20,000 and has been downloaded from the Internet 8 million times! It has sparked a range of games and merchandise that bring income, in other words the model is to give viewers something for free and if they are happy they contribute via related products. (continued)
