# su

# password: <tecleamos el password de administrador>

$ cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup

$ sh ./ati-driver-installer*****.run

Seleccionar "Install Driver 8.XXX on X.Org 7.1 and later releases"

Seleccionar "I agree"

$ aticonfig --initial -f

$ cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.ati

$ cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup /etc/X11/xorg.conf

$ exit

# exit

$ cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf.ati /etc/X11/xorg.conf

I mentioned this bad boy in my earlier post about Steve Jobs Keynote (thought you had gotten away from it, didn't you), and thought I would go into more detail on this "MacBook Air Killer". Why? Because it appears that it isn't quite as good as it was originally touted to be, but it does have a lot of smaller features that put it over the top. Let me explain.

Engadget recently put out the specs comparing the MacBook Air, Voodoo Envy 133, and the X300 and the first thing you will notice is the striking similarities between these three computers. They all have similar weights, graphics cards, sizes, and so on; but where they really differ is in their features and target market. As you can see the X300, geared more towards a business person, is the highest price but offers the most options with an included DVD drive, 3 USB ports, and higher resolution (oddly enough it's CPU is slower). The Envy 133 and MacBook Air are really neck and neck. Both have the same reolution, graphics cards, CPU, almost the same weight and size, no DVD player, and so on. The real difference comes in what the Envy can do.

The best explanation that can be given is by watching the video of Rahul Sood, the founder of Voodoo, explaining his latest creation. Yes he was the one who cut his birthday cake with a MacBook Air, and no he doesn't do that in this video with the Envy. Although that would be cool. For those who don't want to watch, I will give you a breakdown of the features that make this notebook something innovative.

The Evny has a carbon fiber housing which apparently is stiff enough to allow for a removable battery. I thought the aluminum housing of the MacBook Air was pretty stiff as well, but I was apparently wrong. Two USB ports, one that is a ESATA port, express card slot, HDMI and audio port, and a wi-fi port in the power brick! Another cool feature is that when you first power it up you have the choice of going to Windows, Linux, or open Skype, IM, Muisc, or Pictures in a quick-boot system.

Though it looks like Voodoo is just trying to take down Apple with their new line of computers, they definitely have some new features that make it unique to the computing market, and with the new linup coming from Voodoo including the Omen they should give Steve and his Apple a run for their money. Now if they could only get rid of Windows completely.

Playing around with a new gadget is the best way to beat the Monday Madness and avoid doing any real work. Thanks to the fine folks at Lenovo, I've spent the entire morning mucking around with a ThinkPad X300, the thin, light laptop that's seen as a competitor to the Macbook Air. A head-to-head comparison is a tad tough, however, as this is an SSD model, while my Macbook Air is an HD model.

On a superficial level, the Macbook Air is just a beautiful machine. The ThinkPad x300, on the other hand, has the all-familiar (stodgy yet solid) feel. A detailed review will follow later, but for now, all I can say is I'm glad it's running Windows XP and not Vista. If you have any specific questions for me, leave a note in the comments. And if you can't wait for the full review, I suggest you check out Walt Mossberg's review. He likes it.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X300, which runs on a Core 2 Duo processor chip and a massive RAM capacity of 2G

The Lenovo ThinkPad X300, which runs on a Core 2 Duo processor chip and a massive RAM capacity of 2GB, features a 13.3 inch screen at a resolution of 1440*900 pixels which is quite impressive for an ultra portable like this. At this resolution, the icons and the text seem to be a little hard for the user to read. While working on a PDF or a word file, it would be a good idea to zoom in to see what you are doing. This drawback is compromised by the extra detail the user can get from watching movie or playing game.

For an ultra portable pc, the keyboard is very important as it determines the user experience as the user will be working on it the most. The X300 has a complete keypad which is also featured in the 14" and 15" models of Lenovo ThinkPad family. For users that type in the dark a lot, Lenovo has added a small keyboard light on the right of the webcam. This small light is quite powerful as it illuminates the entire keyboard. Added to this, the buttons above the keyboard such as the Think Vintage, power key, etc all glow when pressed.

While all the standard functions are included, the X300 also has a few high end tricks up its sleeve. In built GPS and WWAN connectivity are big hits for those who travel a lot and don’t want to get lost in the middle of nowhere. WWAN enables the user to surf the internet at high speeds wireless.

The X300 also incorporates a DVD-burner for storing backup data or for watching movies. The optical drive is situated on the right of the system. The sides of the units also have a very thorough selection of ports, such as USB ports, SVGA ports, etc...There is a solid-state hard drive in the unit which is limited in size but has higher rotation speed than the normal hard drives.

The width of the unit is less than an inch and is very light, about 2.9- 3.5 pounds. This is the sleekest ThinkPad up until now. The X300 is built in a regular black case around a magnesium chassis which makes it ultra-durable. The lid and the wrist rest all feature an appealing soft matte finish. For added security measures, the X300 has a fingerprint scanner which saves you the trouble of remembering all your passwords and making access to restricted files as simple as all you have to do is swipe your finger over the reader.

Both the touchpad and the red pointed Track Point are present. The track point is used for users who are accustomed to it while the other users can use the touchpad. The track point allows the user to move more freely and the material that is used for its construction is very unique as it makes the track point feel as if glued to your finger.

The X300 also has removable battery, so in case you’re primary battery fails, you can insert the larger 8 cell battery for continuous use. Battery life is rated at 2 hours 45 min for the 6 cell lithium battery and 4 hrs 42 min for the 8 cell lithium battery. The 8-cell battery sticks out from the back a little.

While munching on a reuben at Birk’s, a steakhouse in Silicon Valley, Seagate (STX) CEO Bill Watki

While munching on a reuben at Birk’s, a steakhouse in Silicon Valley, Seagate (STX) CEO Bill Watkins is explaining why he’s not too worried about a these trendy new laptops that have everything but a hard drive.

On the surface, this would seem to be a big problem. Seagate, after all, is the world’s largest hard drive maker with expected sales of more than $3 billion this quarter – so Watkins likes to see his wares go into more gadgets, not fewer. It’s easy to see why he tends not to favor devices like Lenovo’s sleek ThinkPad X300, which is winning raves for its light weight and silent operation, and its 64-gigabyte flash storage drive.

And the X300 isn’t the only laptop that’s doing without a hard drive in favor of a flash solid state drive, or SSD. A version of Apple’s (AAPL) MacBook Air also comes with 64 gigabytes of flash. And there are other defectors, like the diminutive Eee PC from ASUS.

But the key thing, Watkins argues, is that SSDs are just too expensive, and will be for a long time. Just look at the MacBook Air. There are two versions of the Apple laptop, one with an 80 GB hard drive for $1,800, and one with a 64 GB SSD for $3,100. Why pay so much more for less storage? It’s not a difficult choice.

“Realistically, I just don’t see the flash notebook sell,” Watkins says. “We just don’t see the proposition.” (link)

Probably the hottest ulta slim notebook on the market right now is the LG P300. It has specs and build quality that match or exceed the MacBook Air and ThinkPad X300 for much less money. It is a good deal at $1899.99.

Here is NBR's review.

The LG P300 Express Dual Series notebook is a super light, high performance 13.3" notebook. This notebook packs a massive punch with its T8300 Penryn processor, NVIDIA 8600m GS graphics card, and high-gloss 13.3" LCD in a package that weighs roughly 3.6 pounds.

Starting tomorrow, Future Shop is offering this notebook at $1699.99. That is absurd value for a such a great package. Expect it to sell out fast.

No Air, a bateria durou quatro horas e trinta minutos.

CNET did a review of the X300 and gave it an Excellent rating (8.5 out of 10).

The ThinkPad X300 breaks new ground by packing a broad display, full-size keyboard, and nearly every feature a mobile user needs into a sleek, lightweight case.

I used two different ThinkPads many years ago and loved them. They were (and I believe still are) the closest thing to a "lust" laptop in the Windows world. They looked great, had solid build quality, were nicely outfitted, and I loved the eraser head for moving the cursor.

I have little experience with ThinkPads since IBM sold them to Lenovo, but everything I've read is that Lenovo has maintained the line's well-earned quality and reputation -- and expense.

I can see where the X300 will continue that tradition, but it's also a good example of the compromises Steve Jobs claimed are made in the ultra portable market. Specifically, Jobs stated that to get the machines small and light with "typical" I/O generally required these three things:

Smaller screens

Smaller keyboards

Slow processors

As we know, Apple thought differently; the MacBook Air eschews all three, with the resulting compromise being that it doesn't have the "typical" I/O (no DVD, no Ethernet port, only 1 USB port, etc.).

To Lenovo's credit, they thought differently as well, and skipped the first two of the above compromises, but kept most traditional I/O. My personal opinion is that they couldn't let go of the I/O and, building around it, simply had to make that third compromise.

You can read the CNET review for yourself; what strikes me is that the extra I/O -- which may or may not be routinely used -- is so gladly taken as a trade-off for abysmal performance and battery life!

Look at the measurements at the end of the review, the Air trounces this thing in performance and battery life. This is all the more amazing when you consider the following:

The X300 has a SSD. This obviously helped it on the Photoshop test (though it still lags behind the Air), and battery life test (though it still lags behind the Air). Keep in mind this as fast as the X300 gets, whereas it was tested against the slowest possible Air.

The SSD is 16GB less disk space for the X300 compared to the Air.

The X300 was benchmarked with Windows XP. Ouch! You mean the best this thing can do is get stomped by the slowest Air running Apple's latest and greatest OS while it runs a seven year old OS? Are you freakin' kidding me?

The X300 cost $800 more than the Air.

Maybe all the reviews of the Air have been unfair, if this review is any indication. After all, the Air was blasted as being too expensive, too slow (oh no, it's the slowest Mac in Apple's lineup!) and the drive too small. Apparently, Windows users are so used to slow performance they don't care any more. Forced to use a 1.2 GHz processor? No sweat, we'll just run an OS from 2001 and hope nobody notices all the things touted for Vista don't apply.

Yes, all UMPCs require compromise, and it may be that the Air and X300 are the best of breed right now. I'm not sure either is my cup of tea but I think the crappy processor is a bad compromise, and the I/O you get in return isn't enough to make up for it. You utilize the processor every second you're using the machine. The DVD and three USB ports? Not so much. Your mileage may vary.

I also think the requirement of a SSD was a bad decision on Lenovo's part. Less space and more expense. Still, given that it has to run XP to get the best performance, a slow hard drive would really have bogged it down so maybe they had little choice. That ought to tell you something.

If you're happy with Windows XP, an Air using Boot Camp would be a much better performer. Heck, you could even get it with the upgraded 1.8GHz processor and still pocket five hundred over the X300.

The whole “MacBook Air battery not easily user replaceable” has finally made the rounds

The whole "MacBook Air battery not easily user replaceable" has finally made the rounds to the crack analysts at CNN (Batteries might be Apple achilles' heel).

Gee, way to be on the ball guys. Apple fanboys and PC fanboys alike jumped on that issue the second Steve Jobs offered up the demo. Yes, it's slim, in fact the slimmest notebook ever (I'm sure you've seen the commercial). Yes, you can't easily replace the battery yourself, BUT Apple will swap it for you at no charge. Apple fanboys to the rescue.

Enter the IBM Lenovo X300, it's thin too, albeit more expensive, ooh but look it has a DVD drive, user replaceable battery, and other stuff the MacBook Air does not. Lenovo X300 vs. MacBook Air.

Bottom line: there is no perfect laptop! The Apple MacBook Air has it's shortcomings as does the Lenovo X300 and every other laptop for that matter. Apple fanboys and PC fanboys alike need to accept this. Everything Steve Jobs poops out is not gold. Bill Gates is not evil ... his company just make evil products. Get over it.
