I haven't gotten out much to take photos recently, as I've been busy sorting and packing and cleaning and all that un-fun stuff. But here's a shot from the test roll of my new/old Yashica ME. It's of the leaves pressing against the plastic walkway leading to the SECC. Gosh, I love that walkway.

Blaue Stunde halt...

I got a nice package yesterday from my uncle– a big box of vintage cameras! This is really nic

I got a nice package yesterday from my uncle-- a big box of vintage cameras! This is really nice, because I've been thinking a lot about photography lately, and looking at displays of all-too-expensive digital SLRs just wasn't scratching that itch.

I spent some time yesterday looking each one up online, doing my best to not only identify the model, but to find some sort of documentation for each. I highly doubt I could have learned so much in such a short time without the net!

To me, the most exciting camera is the Yashica-Mat EM. I guess this may be the first camera I ever seriously examined that was entirely mechanical, which wasn't so much surprising as it was intriguing. I believe this camera is intended to be help at the user's waistline, as the finder is viewed from the top, looking down. This thing is a beast, but seems like a lot of fun so far!

The Yashica-Mat wasn't the only all-mechanical camera in the bunch, as you can see-- the next camera is a 1-A Autographic Kodak Junior. I'm not familiar with camera of this era at all, but I guess I've learned more about photography in the past couple years than I realized, because I'm not that daunted by it. I'm not at all certain I'll be able to locate any sort of film for this thing, but cleaning it up will surely take me long enough to have time to find out.

There was also this Kodak Hawk-Eye Model B #2 camera. It seems superficially alike to the 1-A Autographic, but is a bit smaller. Getting the dust off of these is going to be a big job!

Here's the last of the Kodaks-- this one is a Kodak Retina I, which was apparently produced by a German Kodak manufacturer. It's unlike any Kodak I've seen before, and is just plain different. It seems incredibly well-constructed, though, and looks like I should be able to just slap some film in and go out shooting!

I don't know much about this one, but it doesn't seem nearly-complicated enough for me to worry-- it's an Imperial Quad 27c. The maker of this camera made a lot of cute, colorful cameras in the 1960s. This is not one of the better-looking models, but seems like it might be a kick anyhow.

Oh! Here's one that I'm also tremendously excited about-- an Asahi/Pentax Honeywell Spotmatic. I guess they liked it so much, they named the thing four times, haha. When I was initially going through the package, I gravitated towards this camera first... maybe just because it looks most like cameras that I'm familiar with. Regardless, I had it sussed-out in a couple minutes, quickly figuring out the location of all the various adjustment knobs, etc. I know that's probably not an amazing feat for experienced photographers, but I think it's a big deal for me. I've always liked taking photos, but I never really owned anything but pocket cameras until relatively recently. Because of this, all the stuff I learned about apertures, f-stops, film speed, etc... was kinda abstract.

For now, my plan is to slowly work on cleaning these cameras, and getting them all in good working order without doing so much that I take away from the qualities they've absorbed over the years. After that, I'd like to find at least one roll of film for each, and make some interesting photographs! Like all my projects, I don't have much of any money to throw at this, so it will probably be slow going. Wish me luck, and leave any helpful tips in the comments section!

BTW, I took all these photos this morning using my little Sony digital. I used the colored inserts for my daughter's lamp shade as the backdrop. It's the same trick I used in this post, but with a different color.

Today was an all together good day. I had a lot on my mind which I wont get into, but I managed to keep it all bottled up and enjoy myself. I woke up somewhat early and at first just shuffled around the apartment for a little...then I took a walk to Lorimer and Metropolitan to meetup with Kellogg. On the way there I snapped about a roll of film on my Yashica Electro 35 which I rarely ever get to use. I hung out at Kelloggs for a bit and shot a few pics of random stuff and then he decided he needed to go to the bank and make a deposit. I borrowed There will be Blood from him so that i would have something to watch at the house and also because I had never seen it, I know, it's ridiculous it took this long. Oh did I mention that he had been poisoned by the "Chinese" a day or so earlier?!?! haha. Food poisoning must blow. Anyway...we walked there, laughing along the way and walking his awesome and friendly pit bull named Lola who decided it would be awesome to poop about 5 times during the walk. Haha. It made me laugh. As we got to be about 5 blocks from the bank Kellogg realizes that he had forgotten key elements that would aide him in this deposit making this trip a complete waste of time. YESSSSSSS! He is awesome. haha. So it was whatever..as we started to back track Lola decides that she wants to roll around in an oil slick, full body, face and all...haha! Kellogg is completely puzzled by this and tries to stop her but she cannot be moved! Needless to say, when she was done she was covered in oil soaked dust and looked as though she had been in a dog fight. People kept staring at us like we had a dog fighting rink and I couldn't stop laughing! I took some photos with my Yashica and I plan to get the rolls developed this week to post here, just be patient. haha. It was getting close to the time for me to meetup with Sarah for some food so Kellogg and I went our separate ways..

I met up with Sarah and we got spanish/chinese food and watched There Will Be Blood together. Wowie. It is an immensely captivating and jaw dropping film, I must say it is one of the best films with some of the best acting I have ever seen. Daniel Day Lewis is so believable and Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine) even more so. A few scenes left me completely speechless. I will probably watch this again this week. Oh man, chills. And did I mention that the soundtrack is just stellar? My god it's great! My favorite track would have to be "Proven Lands" by Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead, it is just so engaging. I've listened to it quite a few times today already. I have a few photo galleries to put up when I get to work so expect that tomorrow. I'm pooped so I'm going to bed now.

I have been an avid amateur photographer since the 1980's. I first picked up an old 110 camera that my mother had and started my visual journey. Not long after in 1986, I picked up a used Yashica FX-2 for around $100 bucks. I was excited about the 35mm format and it's superior quality over the 110! Soon I was taking my camera everywhere shooting anything I viewed as photogenic. I enjoyed capturing friends, family and still scenes (preferable because they didn't move).

I remember someone commenting on one of the first photo's I took with my Yashica of a glass window cracked and shattered and they said it looked very "artistic". Comments from friends that my pictures were "really good" always kept me going even though the personal pleasure of "capturing time" has always been the main drive.

In 1987, I studied black and white printing at George Brown College and really loved the prints we made even though the chemicals smelled and we wasted a lot of materials in the process but we had a lot of fun. In fact, I still have most of my prints from those days.

In 1994 I picked up a Minolta X370 because of its light weight body. (I have a similar problem with guitars, many of them [mainly electric] are very heavy and can make your shoulder sore after a good while). That camera had been my main body until I got my first digital camera.

About the mid 1990's I was asked by several people to be the Official Photographer at ther wedding. This was when I was showing off my black and white prints and impressed so many people that they wanted the same treatment for their wedding. I took a basic rate of pay since I did not want to mis-represent myself as a pro-wedding photoman (and in case I screwed up the whole thing). I ended up getting another camera body Yashica FX-3 so one was loaded with colour and the other with B&W film. After several weddings over the span of five years, I found the work repetitive and exhausting being a lone shooter and my equipment was substandard. Even though everyone seemed to like my work, I was not satisfied with the results and decided unless it was a special favour, that I would not do another wedding until I had proper equipment and a dedicated assistant.

As a music lover, I often found myself shooting concerts and it was great to get a souvenir of some memorable shows. One show I regret not getting my camera in was for the Staple Singers in 1995. We got so close to Pops Staples rocking on his Telecaster that they would have been exellent closeup shots...and only a few years later he passed away.

I still havent purchased a really good digital camera yet. My sister in-law gave me her Sony 3.2 MP camera in 2004 but it doesn't have a decent zoom feature. In 2007 I picked up a little Pentax Optio E10 with 6MP quality. I have been having fun with my little Optio but it lacks a fast shutter so you have to hold it so still in low light and the flash, well it's pretty weak. Despite all these weaknesses, I have been taking a lot more pictures since one doesn't have to worry about cost of film anymore...I also like the colour resolution in digital pictures and the ease of editing on the computer.

So the journey continues...

P.S. I will be featuring some of my pictures and stories about them in future blog entries.

As a stereotypical picture-taking Asian, I have spent most of my social life armed with a camera. Whether it be a friend's birthday party, a girls' night out, or a dinner date, my Nikon Coolpix S200 is always at the ready. But when I look back at the albums, I am disappointed with the quality of the photographs. Most of them were taken haphazardly, without a second thought. Still, when I resolved to learn more about photography, I did not fully grasp the magnitude of the journey I had set out to begin. And now, as I work my way through How To Use Your 35mm Camera, a twenty-six-year-old beginner's guide, I have come to realize that photography is no laughing matter.

To begin my exploration into the world of visual art, I have, supported by the approval of my dad, decided to stick with film. Good old-fashioned film. 35mm. Manual-focus. It all starts here. With my mom's three-decade-old Minolta XG-M.

While I was working with the Minolta for my antique-camera photo shoot, I decided to bring out my dad's beautiful Yashica Mat-124 G for its share of the spotlight. This gorgeous twin reflex lens (TRL) camera still takes amazing pictures, despite the fact that it is over thirty years old. In fact, we've never taken a family portrait without it. No wonder it can still go for as much as $400.

Here's a close-up of the camera.

I'm too intimidated by the Yashica to carry it more than a few feet, let alone play around with it. So for now, in these germinating seeds of my journey into photography, I shall stick with the Minolta, which I think looks fabulously antique. Artsy, even.
