1. Katy Perry- I Kissed A Girl (Play count 10)

I want to say my wife accounts for this song being number one. She's the one who wanted me to download it in the first place. I reluctantly admit it's catchy as hell. Shock-lite, but catchy nonetheless. I think Mika should cover it.

2. Anyone Else But You- The Moldy Peaches (Play count 8 )

Guess who watched Juno recently?

3. September When It Comes- Rosanne Cash (Play count 8 )

Though Rosanne might technically sing better, it's when her dad's voice cuts in that I get chills. Every time. It's a very pretty song.

4. Modern Guilt- Beck (Play count 7)

Not my favourite Beck song, but I love the surf-music sound in the middle. Reminds me of some instrumental from the 60's but I can't put my finger on it. Something by the Ventures?

5. Time Will Tell- Bob Marley (Play count 7)

I've had the Black Crowes cover of this song for so long now and it was only recently I got the original. No surprise, it's great.

6. Elliott Brood- Oh, Alberta! (Play count 6)

Elliott Brood recently played here in Yellowknife at a Folk on the Rocks festival. He was the only act I cared to see so I wasn't about to shell out the exorbitant funds they were asking. I satisfied myself by listening to this track a few times.

7. Preacher and the Slave- Shannon Murray (Play count 6)

I read a book recently that briefly mentioned Joe Hill and I'm left very intrigued. I must look for a biography. This tune is a cover of one of his songs with a punk-folk sort of sound similar to the Moldy Peaches.

8. Sedjedo- Angelique Kidjo (featuring Ziggy Marley) (Play count 5)

Sometimes my random player will throw out a song I didn't realize I even had. This is one of those cases. I loved it and wondered how I ever missed it.

9. Like Eating Glass- Bloc Party (Play count 5)

Not the most recent Bloc Party song, but found me in a similar way as #8.

10. Is She Really Going Out With Him?- Joe Jackson (Play count 5)

I only purchased this track recently when I realized I hadn't any Joe Jackson in my collection except a Tori Amos cover of Real Men.

Predictions for next week:

I recently purchased some of Hawksley Workman's new album. None of the tracks have hooked me yet, but I suspect they might grow on me. I'm also rediscovering the Watchmen, so they might make an appearance. As well, the recent addition of "End of the Line" by The Traveling Wilburys might pop up.

What's your top 10 this week?

Of my three blogs, it seems my yoga blog has been the most neglected. But, that certainly is not indicative of yoga's role in my life right now. In fact, though I've had my ups and downs in my yoga teacher training program (ups: amazing sessions with even more amazing teachers, downs: overwhelmed by the amount of stuff to do), I feel I'm finally into it now. I'm reading more than the assigned materials, I'm attending tons of classes and I'm really looking forward to beginning my practice teaching.

And, as I continue to define my own yoga practice and begin to think about the best way to serve my students, I'm thinking about music this morning. In the past, I have attended classes with no music or classes with lyric-free meditation or new age music. One of my friends calls this latter type "massage music," because it's what you often hear at a spa.

Last night, however, I attended my first yoga class that incorporated a mix of meditation music and more contemporary songs with lyrics. I enjoyed it too. The teacher's playlist seemed to progress from new age, to classical, to songs you don't typically hear in a yoga class.

So, I rushed home to do some online research on yoga playlists. For some time now, I have listened to Gabriel Lee's "Satori" along with a few songs by other artists while practicing at home, but I felt I needed some fresh tunes.

One resource I found that I will continue to revisit is Yoga Journal's playlist page. Each month, a different yoga teacher offers a playlist, and they are each quite unique.

Here is the playlist I compiled:

Gabriel Lee - "Spring Rain"
Gabriel Lee - "Nightengale"
Gabriel Lee - "Wanderer"
Fleetwood Mac - "Landslide"
Ray LaMontagne - "Shelter"
Ray LaMontagne - "Trouble"
Patty Griffin - "Heavenly Day"
My Morning Jacket - "I'm Amazed"
Band of Horses - "Marry Song"
Broken Social Scene - "Looks Just Like the Sun"
Cat Power - "Sea of Love"
Ziggy Marley - "Beach in Hawaii"
Citizen Cope - "Holdin' On"
Ben Harper - "She's Only Happy in the Sun"
Warren Haynes - "Soulshine"

What do you prefer on your yoga playlist? Music sans lyrics, with lyrics, or a combination of both types?

The #37 Greatest Song Of All Time on the Rolling Stone Greatest 500 Greatest Songs list is called "No Woman, No Cry" by Bob Marley.

When the Meanspeed staff asked me to measure the speeds for the song and create graphs that would visually explain speed, I was struck that though the studio version of the song is that which is cited by "The Stone," it is in fact the *live* version that we have all come to love.

The two versions are so radically different from each other I decided to illustrate both. The studio version is played with the help of a metronome, is 98.6 beats per minute, never getting any slower than 97.5 bpm, never any faster than 99.5 bpm. You can easily hear on the 30 second iTunes free sample how relatively canned and cheesy the original is.

In all cases below the screen shots of the numerical coordinates were the measurements used for the corresponding speed graphs above.

Cue: the live version we have all come to love! Not only is there much tempo movement and no metronome use, the mean speed of the song is 78.2 bpm, almost 20 beats per minute slower than the original. For purposes of meanspeed music theory, the song is a *classic* example of the haunting bittersweetness of that tiny area of 77-78 beats per minute. The expression here, as in the meanspeed and bittersweet range songs such as Tears In Heaven by Eric Clapton, The Lady In Red by Christopher De Burgh , Ain't No Sunshine by Bill Withers, Times of Your Life by Paul Anka--in a laid back reggae groove. warm, analogue, live on stage.

Reggae music is, of course, the hippie music of the 1970s. Back then, reggae was a perfect soundtrack for all your smokin' and tokin' needs. Bob Marley and the Wailers exploded into international stardom just as the hangover from the Sixties decade wore off. Ziggy Marley has carried the torch of the Marley family since his father's death in 1981.

Ziggy affixes his name to this new collection of old songs, from the Tuff Gong label started by his father - you can't quibble with the choices here but it's a little bit predictable. Sure, there's Toots and the Maytals, the Wailers, Peter Tosh, etc. doing some of their best-known songs. Nothing here is anything less than a classic but, uh, where's Bob Marley?

Anyway, Ziggy Marley In Jamaica is a pretty good collection if you don't already have this stuff. If you get this and you're intrigued, may I recommend The Harder They Come soundtrack next? Yes, mon.

Lauryn Hill feat. Ziggy Marley

I really like the way Ziggy Marley sung this song. This is the song of his father and listen carefully, they have the same tune? isn't it? Yes, like what they said. "Like father like son".

Of course, there is only one Bob Marley. But, its too good to discover that Ziggy sings like his father's voice.

I'm gonna be honest. Normally I shy away from uplifting or "conscious" lyrics in music. That is why I hate "conscious" hip hop and trance music among many other musics intent on giving off "good vibes" or teach me a lesson. I am a bitter, cynical person and I like my music aggressive or interesting and ask that it not try to brighten my day or dull the pain that is the everyday struggle of life. When it comes to Rastas, I like cats like Sizzla. There's a guy that has made some happy tunes (i don't listen to) but has been angry enough in his time and ain't never scared to "Pump Up Her Pum Pum" and declare "Mi Nah Rape" (in a totally misogynistic manner). The Marley family (who seem to be popping out more members than the Wayans) have always presented a conflictto me. Bob was unarguably and canonically classic, Ziggy not so much and Ky-Mani was annoying in Shottas but made a decent track with Afu Ra once upon a time. Damian the Junior Gong I have to give props to because he did do "Welcome To Jamrock". Stephen (who I had no idea existed until now) apparently produced "Welcome to Jamrock" so that's a good start. Apparently there is some other guy Julian Marley and I ain't never heard his shit before so who knows. In anycase, I am suprised that I like this song because it has that roots and cultural music vibe to it. It has just enough anger though that I'm saying yes to it. This song is one of the standout tracks of the (surprise surprise) Mission Riddim. The other track is just as big and is by Movado called "On The Rock". Expect to hear these two alot this summer at most fine purveyors of reggae/dancehall.

P.S. - Don't know if I'm too happy about this trend though in dancehall over the last two years of being all singy songy on tracks (I blame it on Movado).

via Billboard

Jonathan Demme (Silence of the Lambs) has boarded the Tuff Gong Pictures/ Shangri-La Entertainment Bob Marley documentary, replacing the previously announced Martin Scorsese as director.

The backers said Scorsese has exited the project due to "scheduling conflicts."

Demme, who last worked with Shangri-La Entertainment on the acclaimed Neil Young documentary "Heart of Gold," will join with the Marley family to direct the biopic of the legendary singer songwriter.

Tuff Gong Pictures and Shangri-La Entertainment are producing the picture.

The as-yet-untitled film aims to be released globally on Feb. 6, 2010, the 65th anniversary of Marley's birth, the producers said. Fortissimo Films is the international sales agent.

The movie's executive producers include Ziggy Marley.

Demme recently completed work on upcoming Sony Pictures Classics release "Rachel Getting Married," based on Jenny Lumet's original screenplay. The director is currently editing "Neil Young Trunk Show," a new concert film.

Ziggy Marley stuck around the LA area (or maybe he left and came back) for his Earth Day performance on the Santa Monica Pier, which rocked. The English Beat were just up in Nevada City (you’ve probably never heard of them, but they’re awesome), and Luciano was at Crash Mansion here in LA…

Catch my drift? I tend to go a little overboard and plan my summer around whatever festivals are going on, so here’s what I’ve got so far for the Reggae grooves taking root in California this summer… but as we all know, there will be more, oh, there will be more…

Bob Marley was right when he said that his music would live on forever.

P.S. Here’s a picture of Ziggy - jamming with some kids, though I must say, the kids look nonplussed…

I don’t need no body
To make me happy
All I need is you
I don’t need no money
To live how I should
All I need is you

Sorrow sometimes teach a lesson well
And I know that good can come from bad
So let’s look into that morning star
‘Cause we know just who we are

I don’t need no body
To make me happy
All I need is you
I don’t need no money
To live how I should
All I need is you

Man, this road I said it’s rocky rough
So much obstacles and barriers
Ecclesiastes man him say
Everything is vanity

I don’t need no body
All I need is you
Sorrow sometimes teach a lesson well
And I know that good can come from bad
So let’s look into that morning star
I don’t need no money

No necesito un cuerpo
Que me haga feliz
Todo lo que necesito eres tú
No necesito dinero

No necesito dinero

No necesito dinero
Para vivir como debería
Todo lo que necesito eres tú

Cedella Booker, the mother of Jamaican music legend Bob Marley, has died

Cedella Booker, the mother of Jamaican music legend Bob Marley, has died, a family spokesman said Wednesday. She was 81.

Booker died in her sleep Tuesday night at her home in Miami, apparently from natural causes, spokesman Jerome Hamilton said.

"Mrs. Booker was the matriarch of a movement so powerful that the mystical qualities of the Marley musical legacy remain strong and potent," Jamaica Information Minister Olivia Grange said.

After Norval Marley died in 1955, Booker married an American man and settled in Delaware. She wrote two biographies of her famous son and recorded two albums, "Awake Zion!" and "Smilin' Island of Song.""She was a star in her own right,"

Jamaica Prime Minister Bruce Golding said in a statement. "Her life was one of hardship, struggle and eventual fulfillment, and through it all, she exuded hope, strength and confidence."

Everyone in St. Ann's parish knew Booker as "Mama B," said Harry Shivnani, a family friend and general manager of Bob Marley's mausoleum.

"She loved cooking," Shivnani said. "Mama would make you the best pudding ever.

"Robert Lalah, a columnist for the Jamaica Gleaner, interviewed Booker in February while she celebrated her son's birthday.

"She was a typical Jamaican grandmother," he said. "She was very warm, very friendly."

Booker is survived by two children and several grandchildren, including Ziggy Marley, who won four Grammys with the Melody Makers, a band that included brother Stephen and sisters Sharon and Cedella.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
